At Least 17 Fake Cellphone Towers Capable Of Invasive Spying Have Been Discovered Across America

When Lee Goldsmith drives by one of the many fake cellphone towers being discovered throughout the U.S., his $3,500 CryptoPhone 500 will immediately display the warning message in the image below.
When you drive by the same fake towers, known as “interceptors,” your run of the mill iPhone or Samsung Galaxy won’t alert you to any potential security breach. And that’s exactly how those people who installed these interceptors, whoever they are, like it.
I’ve seen headlines about these fake cell towers over the past several days, but didn’t investigate the matter until today. It appears Popular Science broke the story in late August with the piece: Mysterious Phony Cell Towers Could Be Intercepting Your Calls. The article focuses on the revelations of Lee Goldsmith, CEO of ESD America, which makes ultra-expensive and ultra-secure cellphones (another player in this market is Silent Circle with its Blackphone) . What Lee Goldsmith and other users of the CryptoPhone 500 have discovered while driving across part of America will shock and disturb you.
We learn from Computer World that:
Through notifications such as that, CryptoPhone users found and mapped 17 fake “cell towers” in the U.S. during the month of July. While most phones can’t find those interceptors, a $3,500 CryptoPhone 500 can. The phone has a Samsung Galaxy SIII body, but unlike the Android OS that comes standard on the Galaxy SIII and “leaks data to parts unknown 80-90 times every hour,” ESD America hardened the Android OS by removing 468 vulnerabilities.
“Interceptor use in the U.S. is much higher than people had anticipated,” said Les Goldsmith, the CEO of ESD America. He told Popular Science, “One of our customers took a road trip from Florida to North Carolina and he found eight different interceptors on that trip. We even found one at South Point Casino in Las Vegas.” He added, “What we find suspicious is that a lot of these interceptors are right on top of U.S. military bases. Whose interceptor is it? Who are they, that’s listening to calls around military bases? The point is: we don’t really know whose they are.
Privacy groups have been fighting unconstitutional stingray surveillance for several years, yet there’s still a great deal citizens don’t know about the portable devices known as IMSI catchers, also known by the generic term “stingray.” It acts like a fake cell tower and tricks your mobile device into connecting to it even if you are not on a call. It is used for real time location tracking; some can pinpoint you within two meters as well as eavesdrop and capture the contents of your communications.
They can do even more than that, including pushing spyware to devices and sending spoof texts.
Goldsmith conducts testing on his company’s “baseband firewall” while driving by an unnamed government facility in the Nevada desert that runs an interceptor. “As we drove by, the iPhone showed no difference whatsoever. The Samsung Galaxy S4, the call went from 4G to 3G and back to 4G. The CryptoPhone lit up like a Christmas tree.”
You might know your phone is being intercepted if it shows 2G, instead of 3G or 4G, but some interceptors claim to be “undetectable.” The VME Dominator, for example, is marketed only to government agencies. It promises that it allows “you to intercept, block, follow, track, record and listen to communications using unique triangulation and other advanced technology,” but “cannot be detected. It allows interception of voice and text. It also allows voice manipulation, up or down channel blocking, text intercept and modification, calling and sending text on behalf of the user, and directional finding of a user during random monitoring of calls.”
Now here’s the incredible part. Although the phase out of 2G is several years away, those who wish to spy are so concerned about it, they are already making plans to ensure that surveillance isn’t impacted.
Although it will be a long time before cell phones no longer support 2G, Johnny Law is working on upgrading Harris Corporation “Stingray” systems, with “Hailstorm,” to support 4G LTE interception. The News Tribune in Tacoma reported on a March 2014 purchase order from the DEA, which stated, “The Hailstorm upgrade is necessary for the Stingray system to track 4G LTE phones.”
According to Ars Technica, the Oakland Police Department, Fremont Police Department, and the Alameda County District Attorney joined forces by applying for a DHS grant to pay for the Hailstorm upgrade. “The entire upgrade will cost $460,000—including $205,000 in total Homeland Security grant money, and $50,000 from the Oakland Police Department (OPD).” In theory, more documents are being gathered and will be released this month by the Alameda County DA’s office.

While the FCC seems to have known about cellular network vulnerabilities that stingrays exploit, last month it established a “task force” to investigate the “illicit and unauthorized use” use of stingrays. Instead of investigating law enforcement’s use of such interceptors, the FCC “plans to study the extent to which criminal gangs and foreign intelligence services are using the devices against Americans.” The FCC also refused the ACLU’s FOIA request for stingray documents.
Meanwhile, the FCC is the agency about to destroy the internet on behalf of telecom companies. Do you really have any doubt as to who these agencies really work for?

Thanks Chumblez. I've read a bit about that side of things but I wasn't even taking it that far. Like, as if the lines of demarcation between US govt and US corporations are so well defined that one can be separated from the other.

Your phone also records signal strength to each tower. That data coupled with the phone's current GPS location would allow for the discovery of the location of the rouge cell tower. Just write an app that looked for cell towers that had a number of zero for the value of the number of neighboring cells and when found started mapping the signal strength coupled with the current GPS location. Then send that data to a central point and the current location of the rouge cell tower would be discovered within a few minutes.
Once their location is discovered I bet it wouldn't last too long.
Actual creation of such an app is left as an exercise to the reader.

Someone here posted the other day simply to wrap your cell phone in aluminum foil when not using to block any signal. I tried it and it seems to work. I have one of those $5 taliphones used for blowing up IED's and shit. All it does is make phone calls and text, which I don't do much because it costs $0.50 a text. I buy $40 worth of minutes and I'm good for six months or so.
While I resent the spying, and would happily watch the NSA go through a full, sudden, melt down, I really don't have much shit on this phone or on my calls. They want to track some geezer, fat fuck, accountant...they deserve all the excitement that I bring.

It's not just military, federal LE and a few police departments. The stingrays are used by most larger departments, and the law enforcement community is a tight brotherhood that always shares. The Dept. of Motor Vehicles in my state routinely lends out several of its plate-scanning vehicles to local departments. My cop friend had his SWAT stuff stolen out of his car and they used a stingray to track the criminal right to his house, thanks to the local FBI office. But don't expect any of these tactics to be referred to in court documents (for evidence), because they don't want to risk their toys being taken away for being, you know, constitutional violations.
So, if law enforcement can tell less than the whole truth of how they built a case on you (or fabricate their official record to fill in the gaps of their extra-judicial techniques), is that unconstitutional, illegal or immoral? They don't think so because it is common practice.
BTW - Nine times out of ten when you hear of a huge drug bust on a traffic stop by some highway patrol trooper, the info has been fed to the trooper by extra-judicial intelligence (plate readers, cell trackers, etc) - it is not "a random stop."

There was a article in the local news last week bout that happening, and a few days later they recovered it all.
Yes, in Utah, but a different case - his never made the paper. But I know the case you are referring to (about a week ago) and I bet you bottom dollar they tracked the suspect through the cop's stolen cell phone or they looked at everyone whose phone pinged the closest cell tower during the time of the crime to come up with suspects. Heck yea! Almost all phones are required by law to have a GPS chip in them. Lots of vids on youtube about people opening up their phones and cutting out/removing them. Apparently the phone does not even need to be on for the GPS chip to be pin-pointed. As to how reliable this info is. I dont know. But I know most of them have a gps chip.
Many of the newer phones have a separate battery to feed the GPS chip even if you take the regular battery out and thereby think it's been silenced.

Well I used to be on one but I saw the error of my ways. Back then it was more in fashion, not like now where people are just waking up to the over-militarization and increasing thuggery of almost every police department in the country. I think you're right about it being a reflection of society, or at least a society that will tolerate such abuse. I'm glad you've seen the light, I wish more cops would. Unfortunately, the very high majority of cops on SWAT teams get off on abusing their fellow man.
There is that. There are those that are attracted to police work because they want to tell people what to do. There are those that do it because it's the best-paying blue collar job they can have. There are those that even want to exploit the authority to their personal advantage. Hell, I remember one trainee that arrested some woman for intoxication and offered to let her off if she gave him a bj. But I would say that most of the rest fall into a majority category...those that wanted to be a cop to "protect and serve" in the vein of helping those that are unable to defend themselves. It can get ugly from there, meaning that they either want to exact too much retribution on a suspect, or they get so jaded by society that they no longer have the desire to defend those who are unable to defend themselves (but they have to do the time to get the pension), so you get some awful behavior. Another thing is, being a cop is highly emotional, so often they are criticized for behaving a certain way by many that were never in the same situation and perhaps that person would have done the same, if flung into it. I left after about 10 years because I became pretty jaded and I didn't give a crap about a pension if I was going to be miserable. I am glad I left, but I am a very small sliver of that cop demographic.
Also, never forget that power corrupts, so a lot of corruption (of the soul type) takes place in cops. So they may think they are on the "right" side but can never figure out that they are enforcing bad law, which you can see at all sorts of events around the world.
I once considered being a cop, when I was considerably younger. But I realized that I don't have the patience or the conflict resolution skills that a peace officer should have. I also realized that it would by highly hypocritical to enforce laws that I disagree with, so I decided to do something else. Even more importantly, It also occured to me that most people who want to "protect and serve" or "make a difference" really just have some kind of a Christ complex and should not have any kind of authority whatsoever. You are 100% correct that power corrupts, and cops aare given more and more power all the time.

Agreed. You caught something I really wasn't comfortable in claiming. They really know it is wrong but they are blinded by corruption (success/money, or a way of being paid) and power - same with law enforcement as with bankers. Upton Sinclair: "It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends upon his not understanding it!" They know, but on some level they disconnect and try to obfuscate it. It is a psychology of corruption, I'm convinced, and the judiciary is just as vulnerable to it, so they are not the savior.
