Ceasefire Over: Shelling Resumes In Mariupol And Donetsk

Tyler Durden's picture

Update: *APPARENT SHELLING REPORTED NEAR UKRAINIAN PORT OF MARIUPOL: AP

  • PROLONGED ARTILLERY FIRE HEARD TO EAST OF MARIUPOL PORT IN EASTERN UKRAINE DESPITE CEASEFIRE - REUTERS

Translated...

Perhaps unsurprisingly, numerous reports (from both sides) state that the long-awaited cease-fire in Ukraine is over. As RIA reports, the pro-Russian separatists noted Ukrainian special forces continued shelling towns and militia positions in the Donetsk region late Friday despite the ceasefire established hours before. Several reporters in the strategic 'land-bridge' city of Mariupol claims to have seen flashes from explosions and heard powerful detonations, where tanks are moving rapidly towards the eastern checkpoint. France24 also reports the Ukraine military is now accusing rebels of violating the cease-fire. AP further confirms sustained explosions outside the city of Mariupol with journalists reporting "people dying of bullet wounds."

As we noted previously, Bloomberg's Leonid Bershidsky explains how Ukraine's Cease-Fire Is Putin's Victory.

...As for Russian President Vladimir Putin, he has secured a ringside seat and may settle down with a bowl of popcorn. Any outcome suits him as long as Ukraine struggles to get out of its impasse alone. He will be happy to see the Lugansk and Donetsk regions turn into a frozen-conflict zone, precluding Ukraine's further integration into NATO and the European Union, and equally pleased to have them gain broad autonomy from Kiev and a veto on major political decisions. A military solution suits him, too, since the West has refused to engage him except in the form of ineffectual sanctions.

Make no mistake about it: The ceasefire is a victory for Putin, a vindication of his aggression and duplicity. I just hope it ends the bloodshed.

But late last night, RIA reports Ukrainian forces begin shelling again...

City authorities of Donetsk reported that shelling continues in the city despite ceasefire that came into force at 15:00 GMT Friday.

"As of 18:00 [local time, 15:00 GMT] situation in Donetsk remains far from being calm, sounds of explosions are heard. At the moment, artillery shelling is under way in the city’s Petrovsky district," the city council said in a statement.

Which continues this morning

Ukrainian special forces continued shelling towns and militia positions in the Donetsk region late Friday despite the ceasefire established hours before, the militia forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) said Saturday.

"The people's militia's subdivisions in Horlivka and Makiivka fell under mortar shelling in the Donetsk direction at 20 hours 15 minutes [17:15 GMT]," said in the DPR headquarters.

Some 1.5 hours later, the Ukrainian forces attacked the city of Yasynuvata, and at 10:30 p.m. (19:30 GMT), the positions of the militia forces' at the Donetsk airport, according to militia.

"Along the whole contact line with the enemy, [militia forces] adhered to the commander's order not to fire back," the DPR representatives said.

Several reporters note flashes and explosions...

But as France24 reports, the Ukrainian army points the finger at the pro-Russian separatists for breaking the cease-fire...

A top Ukrainian defence official accused pro-Russian insurgents on Saturday of violating a ceasefire the two sides signed up to in a bid to halt nearly five months of bloodshed.

"We have recorded a series of provocations by the rebels. They fired on our anti-terrorism units on 28 occasions (on Friday), with 10 of those coming after the ceasefire," National Security and Defence Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko told reporters.

AP confirms,

Witnesses in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol are reporting sustained explosions outside the city and a volunteer battalion of Ukrainian fighters says Grad rockets are being fired at its positions.

The reports Saturday night come little more than a day after Ukraine and Russian-backed separatist rebels signed a cease-fire after more than four months of fighting in the country's east.

The cease-fire had appeared to largely been holding during much of the day.

But late Saturday, witnesses in Mariupol told The Associated Press by telephone that heavy explosions were coming from the city's eastern outskirts, where Ukrainian troops retain defensive lines against the rebels.

The volunteer Azov Battalion said on Facebook that their positions were hit by Grad rockets, but did not give details.

*  *  *

So, Rebels blame Ukraine... Ukraine blames Rebels... back to square 1 we go

*  *  *

So it looks like more sanctions will be coming on Monday (European blowback any minute), no Mistral delivery (French losses), and a NATO rapid response team engage (more costs for Europe), leaving Putin with some decisions to make - move now, or wait til winter...

It's not Russia, it's the separatists. If it was Russia, they would already have taken Kiev. If Russia really invaded, they'd take the whole of Ukraine in a matter of days. Five, maybe six at most.

Slowly slipping in at night over the weekends.  Inchstones.  Russians have a long time to do this and might take a few years during the summers.

In a few years of little or no gas from Russia things will look different.  Then again, if a very strong western defense is setup quickly it could all collapse in a second.

Nats and maybe others are still there according to my source on quiet side of Mauripol..not ventured across to look where fightings are...but shelling and small arms.

Kyiv gathered many armor forward  and started for assaults and shellings firstly real soon after ceasefire began. NAF followed orders not to respond to violations for awhile, but then fight back

Colonel Cassad's web site is saying the Ukies are on the 4th call up or mobilization or draft of troops.  it is getting down to children and old men.  Ukie's are deserting and abandoning equipment too.

Cassad's site said the Ukies are so desparate they are mobilizing old BTR60/70 APCs and 1930s era machine guns.

I sure hope NAF/NovoRossiya goes all the way to Kiev and the Ukrianians rally around to arrest, try and execute the oligarchs and their goons who caused this.

It is not surprising that the truce did not hold, given that both sides contain irregular units that will not pay any attention to political decisions by those who presume to control them.  The Kiev side has neo-nazi militias, Svoboda and Bandera fanatics, right sector militias, and are said to have Polish volunteers and mercenaries.  The separatist side is made up of local militias and are said to be assisted by Serbian volunteers and mercenaries, as well as Russian volunteers and supplies.  More violence can be expected until one or both sides are exhausted.  It is unlikely that Europe will do more than impose more nuisance sanctions, while it is hoped that Russia will use its natural gas weapon only if the violence escalates.

A long time ago in Syria, when Obama threatened a cruise missile attack on Syria, Putin got Obama to blink. And  I came to the conclusion that Putin threatened Obama with 'tit for tat' warfare.

According to everything I've read about this ceasefire, the Ukrainians broke it first at Donetsk last night.

So there was a little tit-for-tatery at Mariupol the next day.

If Obama could figure that one out so should Poroshenko.

Following tweeter feeds from the battle fronts, the cease fire never really took hold in some places, though it did enjoy a large measure of support for a little while. Ukie's used the end of hostilites to begin to freely move large units with armor towards vital road junctions and towns which quickly posed a threat to Rebel positions and front lines. One large Ukie armored force began to race unhindered to a vital city on the road to Mariupol. Had this been allowed to advance under cease fire cover, it would have been equal to winning a major battle without a shot being fored. Once I saw this large troop advance, I knew this cease fire was fast going to die. It was a Kiev trick, a trick to reverse their major defeats and race to get postions they need to renew their attacks without counter moves from rebel artillery or rocket forces. Really, has rebels held to the cease fire, they may have been put back into a dangerous situation, and have lsot hard won gains, all due to a cease fire that forced them to stop using artillery and rocket forces to degrade Ukie tropp movements.

This was is on, and I doubt the rebels will get suckered a third time into a cease fire that allows wide scale advances by large Ukie units. Two times now they have stopped defending their small foothold and allowed Kiev freedom of movement.

The Kiev government signed the cease fire to stop the utter collapse of many battalions and the threat of total breakdown of their front. This cease fire was seen as a chance to flood troops and armor back into the battle zone. Rebel watched this for under 24 hours and said, fuck it, we can't not fight.

Jack - what is left in the Ukie armor inventory?  I have been following events on Colonel Cassads web site and the NAF is destroying the Ukes.   The conscripts and Ukes pushed to fight by Yats and Porkys criminal dual-citizen oligarch junta under threat to their families.

They are getting destroyed in the cauldrons and any armor is getting destroyed or abandoned.  Why fight against other Ukrainains for these criminals in Kiev.

The other word is Yats and Porky are on the 4th mobilization or draft and there is not much left except kids and old men.   Colonel Cassad's site is saying they are putting old BTR60/70 APCs into service along with 1930s machine guns.

Anyone know if the Hungarian T-64s have arrived yet?  Those are probably pretty worthless.

Foolish move, pressed onto them by Putin, in his bid to please the EU politicians. The USA hold all power over the EU, and Putin is wasting his time trying to divide them. My impression is the ceasefire was a panic by the criminal junta in Kiev and NATO because the Ukie army is falling apart. The NAF/NovoRussia was rolling over everything on the battlefield and cauldrons.

Many Ukie's conscripts realize they are being used and are being sent to slaughter by the junta scum in Kiev.    They are deserting and those who end up fighting are being destroyed.

The Ukie's thought their ace in the hole was armor but the NAF is destroying Ukie tanks, BMPs and APCs with ease.  No one probably expected that.  The Ukie conscripts do not want to be there and the very tough NAF soldiers are fighting for their survival.

My guess is NATO and the dual-citizen oligarch vermin never guess it would go this way.  Maybe the people of the Ukraine and NovoRussians will head to Kiev to remove these criminals by force.

I'm pretty sure that the Ziocons are not going to be happy when the first official NATO troops start defecting. When they do, they will live in a country freer, cheaper to live in, and one that has way, way, WAY more hot women. Just wave the white flag and they can have the freedom that they never new they were missing. A freedom that we only briefly had in the early 1800's. We've been through some serious conditioning to have us think otherwise.

Can you imagine that scene? Remember during the cold war when the occasional iron/eastern bloc pilot or border guard would defect? Remember the headlines? Something tells me that Reuters wont find room in the broadcast for that event.

Sunday was the day that the prisoner exchange between Kiev and the separatists was to take place.  With all the Ukrainian violations of the cease-fire I don't think those 200 soldiers will be returned until  Poroshenko's word means something more than it did Friday.

Andriy Lysenko, the spokesman of Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, said Kiev wanted the exchange of prisoners of war to take place "as fast as possible" but gave no timeframe. He said the rebels were holding more than 200 Ukrainians captive.

Ukraine's flagrant violations of the cease-fire cost it a company of experienced soldiers.

MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) - The self-proclaimed Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics (LPR, DPR) hope to complete the procedures for the exchange of all detained personsin the coming days, LPR head Igor Plotnitsky told RIA Novosti on the phone.

"Our main priority is saving the lives of civilians. We need to secure people’s lives, to create conditions for the safe return of over a million refugees to their homes, and to start the economic revival of our country. We need to restore the economy, relations with Russia, Ukraine, and Europe. We also hope to complete the procedures for the exchange of hostages and detained persons in the coming days," Plotnitsky said.

It appears that the USAIPAC/CIA/zioNazi
masterplan has hit a few snags along the way.
Initially designed as a cheap and easy
shot at Russia by deposing Yanukovich
and installing Yatsenyuk (in a kind of
Pinochet for Allende swap), followed by
having Ukraine join NATO...The next
piece of the jigsaw puzzle would be
the time-tested classic CIA/Nato
Strategy of Tension staging of a major
false flag incident that could be blamed
on Russia in order to trigger a NATO
attack that would automatically drag
all Nato members, willing or not,
into a destabilizing war against Moscow...
simple plan..the international scene was
relatively quiet, Gaddafi was out--Iraq
and Afghanistan looked like they could
be handled, and Gaza was quiet.

Unfortunately, Putin not being some
stupid, illiterate third-world punk,
immediately saw through the strategy
and annexed Crimea without shedding
a drop of blood....next, the Russian-
speaking Eastern Ukrainians, having
eaten enough shit from Kiev already
in terms of lack of adequate representation
were not, at any cost, about to place
themselves under  the thumb of a
Zionist Nazi USAIPAC coup regime.
In the meantime, the rest of the middle
east went totally to hell, with Israel/Gaza
and ISIS/Iraq occupying CIA funding
and attention that otherwise could have
gone to the Kiev kleptocracy...
on top of which, the Ukrainian army wanted
no part of killing fellow Ukrainians,
which necessitated the costly employment
of massive numbers of mercenaries
to do Kiev/Kolomoisky's dirty work.....
while the Eastern Ukrainian
Freedom Fighters kept valiantly battling their
hearts out to defend their home land
and their basic human rights, dignity,
and honor.  The memory of their fight
against Nazi invasion is too recent
and too close to home for them to have
forgotten and live a repeat.

All of which has brought us to where
we are now......

Looks like the "deepest pockets" have lost so much money on this one already that there is a point of no return for the ones with the biggest stakes...  And why would anyone be surprised with QE infinity and no tangible "asset class" to back all that funny money thats been pumped out in the last 6 years alone???!

What was true before WWII will be true for WWIII unless some of the younger and less senile generation of the Rothschild(s) and Rockefeller(s) put the older ones "to bed"!

Lets hope we hear about an accident for all the individuals represented in the read.  What I wouldn't give to have an MH-370 full of them that simply disappears off the radar!!!

Donetsk Republic Sends Captured Ukrainian Soldiers Home to Mothers and Wives

This is an extremely interesting 9 minute video from the Donetsk Republic. It shows extraordinary
humane treatment and release of captured Ukrainian soldiers. The Christian behavior of the Donetsk Republic puts to shame the crude barbarians who rule in America and Europe and the media shills who whore for the Western barbarians.
