The west is going to be a bleak road warrior existence with no water. What shall we all do!? ZH loves pumping drought stories except the fact that certain area in the west...namely AZ are experiencing the rainest season in about 30 years. But in 5 years we will all be dead out here from a lack of water.
You're just ahead of the next big story WB7. I find it hard to believe that the drought is not going to have one HELL of an effect of cali real estate values. And soon. If not already. Too bad that we will have to tell the banks that we have nothing left to help them with this time.
a feature story on msm was a family in the central valley which lived in a neighborhood where everyone gets their water from a well, and the well has gone dry, and it would take years to implement city water. many people in CA live using stored water, just drive around the upper mojave, and you see raised water tanks everywhere. now you can bury large tanks, using solar electric to pump the water out. in the final outcome private water storage might be the preferable solution. ironically well water is less certain in most parts of the pacific nw, where they get a lot of rain. in places llike the great plains where they get very little rain they sit on a huge aquifer. private water storage means you can live just about anywhere, which reduces your need for expensive property (and high taxes). off the grid is going mainstream, as people find out when the well dries up. and if you have a good season ground water well you can pump water for storage the rest of the year. i think way too much has been made of the water crisis. and techniques of hydroponics use less water to grow vegetables (though of course livestock use a great deal of water and they are also an inefficient use of grain which is not an irrigated crop but nonetheless can provide food for people)
since less and less agriculture is being done in the us, i will guess the aquifers will start to rebuild after a few years. we're all worried about oil, but what if people stop driving? (by the way CA is proposing a miles driven tax on citizens) water is already tight, if you want to use more you are going to have to pay. tier one and tier two, big difference.
The first to suffer will be those at the bottom of the pyramid...
Recent trips up and down 99 and I5 continue to amaze me at the amount of orchards, vineyards and dairy feed from one end of the horizon to the other. The Yolo Bypass NW of Sacramento was built to divert the overflow from excess rainfall, (particularly when it falls on snowpacks), and stands testament to the fact we aren't water starved, we're living out the results of political sabotage. Our (s)elected officials have ignored reality far too long and need to get to work on proper storage.
Drip irrigation has been a game changer but the foreign ownership of the crops produced here has grown far more rapidly than most can imagine. We can't buy oranges, pistachios, cherries, walnuts or milk / cheese any less than anywhere else in the country which defies all reason imo. At least a 5L box of Delicious Blush is still ~10 bucks.
Gotta love those mercuriously liquid algo driven futures markets.
Back in the 70's nat geo did a story about water out west. There were signs (markers) on utility poles showing how much the land had subsided due to aquifers being drained. I recall some of the markers showed about 10 to 15 feet of land subsidence.

they can put a meter on a private well, i know that. i have been thinking about it, a storage tank, and then read the meter each month and if i am below tier two at the end of the period, then pump the difference into the tank. not that it would justify the expense but i would have the extra water in case of an earthquake or a water main break and it would all be stored for later use at the lowest price. the next big government plan is to restrict septic tanks altogether. they create new ground water which settles in low areas and creates wetlands where mosquitos breed. my septic tank had to be repaired the guy gave me some advice, get on sewer. (yeah and then we pump all that extra water into the ocean, right) there are of course systems which recycle the water, but its also a huge waste of energy pumping all that stuff around, to recycle it and pump it back to the customer, thats nuts. onsite waste water recycling is a better solution. (pardon the pun)

What do you propose Feinstine and Obama do about it? The only thing they could do is take resouces from other parts of the country and give them to Cali. I think the Californians live there and should fix thier own water crisis. I have a place in South Jersey on the beach and if it was destroyed in a storm certainly wouldn't be asking what Obama is doing about it. I took the risk, I'll rebuild or abandon the house.

Its the same old bullshit. The first to suffer will be those at the bottom of the pyramid.
However, if the well runs dry, there is not much you can do unless you have prepared...
I wonder what sucking up all the aquifer does to plate tectonics.

my neighbor built a cistern to store rain water from his roof. what's wrong with this picture?
Your neighbor hasn't been visited by the EPA or the local 'water authority' yet. Don't worry; he WILL BE.

I would imagine that Di Fi and hubby Dick Blum have secured water rights as they did mineral rights in California and elsewhere.
