Europe Goes "All In": Will Sanction Rosneft, Gazprom Neft And Transneft

Tyler Durden's picture

Until this moment, the main reason why everyone mostly dismissed Europe's sanctions against Russia is that despite all its pompous rhetoric, Europe consistently refused to hit Russia where it would hurt: its energy titans Gazprom, Rosneft And Transfneft. The reason is simple: by imposing sanctions on these core energy exporters, Europe would directly threaten the stability of its own energy imports (Russia accounts for up to 30% of German gas imports), and as winter approaches with every passing day, playing with the energy status quo would seem like economic suicide. This all appears to have changed last Friday, when as the FT reports from a leaked copy, Europe's latest sanctions round will boldly go where Europe has never dared to go before, and impose sanctions on the big three: Rosneft, Gazprom Neft and Transneft.

This is what is known in game theory terms as a major defection round.

It also means that suddenly the stakes for Russia, and thus Europe, just got all too real, as Putin will now have no choice but to really ramp up the retaliatory escalation, which following the food ban can only mean one thing: a staggered reduction in gas flow to Europe.

It also means something else: recall that it was just ten days ago when we reported that Gazprom would begins accepting payment for oil in Ruble and Yuan.

If today's news is confirmed, Europe's dramatic shift in sanctions strategy means that Europe's embargo of both the US Dollar and the Euro will accelerate as Russia further intensifies its shift away from both the west and the petrodollar. The only and clear winner here: China, which will almost certainly step in to provide the funding Russia needs however on Beijing's terms in effect making the symbiotic link between Russia and China even stronger, forcing Moscow to rely almost exclusively on China for trade and funding relations, and suddenly give Xi Jinping all the trump cards.

What China's president will do, now that he has all the leverage in the world to call shots both to the West, the East, and of course, Africa, remains unknown, although those thousands of tons of gold imports that mysteriously enter the country and are never heard from again, may provide a hint.

Cutting off the gas flow is one bet. Telling Europe that Russia will only accept rubles, yuan or gold for it's gas is another. I bet on a form of the later.

Perhaps the euros have calculated that Russia really is vulnerable and can be brought to heel by real sanctions, not the periphery sanctions that have been tried so far. Maybe Merkel and her ilk have calculated that in a new, intense game of chicken Russia will blink first.

I think it is a miscalculation, and I also think that Russia will indeed ally much closer with China as Tyler suggests, but I don't think Putin will have to become nearly as much of a China puppet as Tyler suggests.

Putin's Russia is fiercely independent and will not become slaves of any power. They won't have to. Putin will play his cards with China extremely well. The Russia-China axis is entering a new phase here - ominous for the West, not for Russia.

Europe would do well to heed the words and lyrics of the mighty Amon Amarth:

"The icy winter is creeping near
Dark skies above us
Biting frost is in the air
Darkness surrounds us

The cold piercing autumn breeze
Fills the longship's sail
Soon the lakes and seas will freeze
And snow will lay its veil"

Dr Jim Willie who was interviewed on the www.goldenjackass.com website a few days ago has revealed that trusted colleagues in Germany and Russia have both stated that big cracks are beginning to appear in the EU alliance and the main culprits showing decent are Germany and France. Jim said that his contacts in Germany had told him that the German banks and Government were quite happy to dance to Obama's tune and  apply suicidal sanctions against Russia, but his German contacts told him that the industrial might of the country would not sacrifice their economy to please Obama. Jim said that his contacts were warned 2 yrs ago that the US would target Ukraine to destabilize Russia they said that as many as 5.000 companies were locked in trade deals with Russia. They said that the Germans have had a belly full of the US and were in the early stages of negotiating with Russia and BRICS and pulling out of the EU along with France after the US imposed fines on BNP Paribas and german Banks. Jim's contacts said that the US would now start to Demonize Germany just as they have Russia. Jim said that the reason for the big success by the rebels in Ukraine was down to a significant number of French,British,German military that are fighting alongside the rebels with support from Eastern block countries as well. They have captured a large number of Blackwater that have been interrogated and will be paraded in front of cameras in a few days time. Jim also said that Poro an Yatz were making ready to exit Ukraine.

Poroshenko’s Aide Names NATO Countries That Agree to Supply Weapons to Kiev

By Ria Novosti

Global Research, September 07, 2014

Adviser to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Yuri Lutsenko said that agreements reached at the NATO summit in Wales to supply advanced weapons to Ukraine from several countries, including the United States, France and Poland.

“Security. A number of agreements were reached at the NATO summit on the Western military advisers and modern arms shipments from the United States, France, Italy, Poland, and Norway,” Lutsenko said Sunday on Facebook.

Earlier, in the margins of the NATO summit in Wales on September 4-5, the Ukrainian president said that the alliance would adopt a declaration on military and technical assistance to Kiev. Later, in an interview with BBC, Poroshenko confirmed that some NATO members promised to supply precision weapons to Ukraine, but refused to name them...

Ukraine has been engulfed in violent internal conflict since mid-April, when Kiev began its military operation against independence supporters in the southeastern regions of the country. According to United Nations’ estimates, over 2,500 people have been killed and more than 6,000 wounded since the start of the offensive

This article assumes the next step will be for Russia to reduce gas flow.

At some point Russia will retaliate by dumping US treasury bonds and dollars. Since they will need to do that while they still have access to the markets, I think that will be Russias next move rather than gas flow.

Qatar still wants to drive a Nat Gas pipeline through Syria to Europe. By restricting its gas supply to the EU, Russia may give even more  impetus to this artificial crisis. All that's blocking the Qatar / Saudi plan is Assad (though backed by Putin).  Wouldn't it be convenient for TPTB to find some sort of excuse to facilitate regime change in Syria, especiallly with the support of the governments of a nearly frozen-to-death EU? Capital Market Ban is a problem to EU, not to the "sanctionized" companies.

They will aks them to prepay in Ruble (or any gold backed currency).

THis is going to hurt EU's economy the third time. We shall pay much more for heating (the money will go abroadand, flow out of the EU) & spend much less on the consumer goods, even on the nutrition.

All the big organisations are enslaving us - NATO, EU. etc. While we stay with them, they will keep abusing and triangulating. Each country needs to stand up for what is right and ignore the pyschopaths and drop out of the abusive relationship with a stroke of a pen. Our politicians need their ears bending pronto.

I know the issue is complicated ( $ decline, oil, currency wars, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, post WW2, ego's etc) Why do we feel we still need NATO & EU? Are they relevent today? Didn't we all trade before then? By being in these organisations we allow ourselves to be the useful tools of the 0.01% fools. The world has moved on.

First Things First

After the sanctions are announced tomorrow, the Kremlin asks the Russian High Court to declare all contracts with the EU null and void as Europe's expansion of sanctions against Russia has reached critical mass and is now a  surreptitious declaration of war on the People of Russia.

Gazprom can then revise the gas deal with Europe, raise its prices and demand payment in rubles, yuan or cowrie shells. (The deal with NASA about the Soyez shuttles is also vitiated.)

A few days later Russian crews begin to dismantle and cannibalize the last pipeline pumping stations at their border with Europe to be used for the Great Pipeling of China.

Don't you think Putin's phone will be ringing off the hookski?

It would be an interesting scenario if Russia decided to turn the table and export their dollars back to the US. Roughly 1550 USD per person in the US. The sanctions just made the ruble record low against the dollar, so if the Russians sell their dollar holdings now they get more rubles than they ever got before.

This may be exactly what Washington and Westminster want.

With Russia now driven to cut gas exports to Europe, it gives Washington the excuse it needs to ratchet up the abusive rhetoric towards Russia and engineer an incident to kick-start WWIII by proxy, probably in Ukraine using NATO as its first weapon of mass insanity.

With this latest example of its death wish it's certainly on its way and with empty suit Cameron providing all the mindless rhetoric needed to keep up momentum (to appease Washington and because the UK's gas doesn't come from Russia), Europe will have to suffer some very cold weather, unrest on the streets or economic catastrophe before it applies the brakes, turns round and heads back to planet sanity. There seems to be a little apprehension in the ranks about the ceasefire. Some of the stalwarts are wobbly.

LET PUTIN BE PUTIN.

First, none of us here know as much as he does about all the aspects of the situation.

Perhaps, as some here feel, he is losing the advantage he gained by the deals he made  in Minsk.  Or is it another feint.  We have to wait and see.

We don't know the extent of China's financial support of Russia in the face of the Western sanctions. We don't know who's buying the cut-rate ruble. We won't know how the EU will react to a cut off of gas until the gas is actually cut off.

If the EU is depending on Russia's unwillingness to lose its revenue, but China has written them a blank check, won't there be some unplanned scrambling?

Now, smacker, answer this question.  It's been on my mind since the beginning of the year and and my answer isn't very satisfactory.

Given the scope of the bloodbath in Donbas these past 4 months, why didn't Putin have Viktor Yushchenko nip the Maidan mob in the bud in December or January with the Ukrainian army?

What do you think?

Mon, 09/08/2014 - 04:08 | 5192813 smacker
smacker's picture

There's some difficult stuff there.

It's possible that before Putin throttles gas flows to Europe he might take other actions first. High on the list is to close Russian airspace to commercial air traffic. This would force some serious re-routing of flights between Scandinavia/Europe and large parts of Asia, meaning an increase in fuel costs and in some cases alternative planes or a refueling stop en route.

It's difficult to know what Putin's strategy is to deal with this outbreak of Western warmongering except from Day One to hold back on direct intervention and play the Statesman in face of serious provocation by the US State & CIA co-ordinating revolution in Kiev . Perhaps Nuland didn't calculate that civil war would break out after her bought & paid for angry mob got rid of Yanushenko.

Putin's restrained stance throughout the Ukie crises (and Syria before that) is winning respect from Western populations but is probably making Washington & Westminster angry because he's not providing them with any excuse to send NATO into Ukraine which is clearly what they want to do, to install NATO bases there. Thus, instead of pointing to evidenced Russian interference they have little choice but to resort to ever bigger lies.

Putin may also have considered that Western economies are sinking into oblivion and the temperature on the streets is rising as our governments distance themselves from the very people they purport to represent. Widespread civil unrest may gather momentum across the West if our "leaders" don't get a grip. In this respect, Obama is a waste of space and is not in control. Cameron is a loud-mouth empty suit supported by other Euro retards. Brussels remains in cuckooland whilst the EZ economy sinks. NATO is trying to take on a new role of being "offensive". There might only be one person across the West who still has commonsense: Merkel. And she speaks Russian.

Excellent stuff.

I have a fantasy that it's going to be much worse for the US. Here are  a few links for you.  I saw the first one last night

http://rt.com/news/185836-switzerland-snowden-testify-extradition/

Snowden showed up in Moscow in May 2013 and took with him, I assume, all of the plots and plans of the NSA he copied until he went to Hong Kong. The Maidan filled up at the end of November that same year. If Nuland and Brennan were complicit in the Kievan coup, there's a chance Snowden snagged emails and other evidence which proved it.

If Snowden goes to Switzerland to testify with his million and one documents, he'll be able to prove to the European governments before a European parliament that the US had been plotting the coup even before Nuland assembled the mob in the Maidan.

If Snowden showed up possessing proof of the US's plans for taking over Ukraine, then Putin would naturally let the US do so and then arrange Snowden's appearance before the German or Swiss Parliaments in what could be huge embarrassment for Washington.

These next two links are from today's RIA Novisti and speak for themselves.

http://en.ria.ru/world/20140908/192745309/Germany-Says-No-Data-Confirms-...

http://en.ria.ru/world/20140908/192750773/Former-CIA-Representative-MH17...

This last one is my favorite because it isn't political at all.  It is a video of the reopening of the Mariinsky in May 2013 (about the time Snowden moved into the transit area of Sheremetyevo airport)

Putin opens the celebration with a seven minute speech in Russian.  Beside the words, 'Maestro Gergiev', I didn't understand any of it, but as he is the man of the moment, I enjoyed it and will probably watch it again.

The remaining two hours are filled with opera and ballet and a tour of the renovated Mariinsky and its new technology.

Hmm.  Who would WWIII benefit?

Or:  Who would a Black Swan benefit?

What if Mr. Yellen et al know that their ponzi scheme is fixing to implode -- 2 or 3 months more at best.

What to do?

Nothing they can do, if that's the case.  No amount of printing will stop a stampede to the exits.

If they cannot prevent a crash, then they must prevent any blame being placed on them.

Black Swan is perfect fall guy:  "It would have worked out just fine, but no market could have withstood event XXXX.  In fact, think of how much worse it would have been, were it not for QE."

Bulgaria should immediately approve SouthStream and get some 'forward' gas contracts out of it and thereby bypass this morass immediately and for the next decade.

Baltic NATO states ...better pray it is a warm winter..can they reverse their gas flows ?  Will EU pay for Baltic gas this winter ?

It is not clear how Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania could survive without Russian fuels.  Maybe LNG, but I doubt they could afford it.

Baltic states maybe the furthest 'out' during these times since they are 'Russian-locked' and Belarus won't help too much.

and Poland may become extremely hot since they 'run' the EU now.  How will Poland react to these events ?

On another strong note...Russia has two extremely significant pincers in this and should be important now:

Kaliningrad Oblast (Russia's largest naval port ?)...Poland may be interested if gets cut off from Baltic states.

Moldova, Trans-dniester region near Ukraine and Odessa.

See the political pincer movements begin and see sparks.

As said above, it does not appear to apply to Gazprom gas exports, also Russia has never defaulted on a gas supply contract and I doubt it ever will. In this cynical world it seems that Russia can be trusted to deliver on its promises.

If their first response to sanctions, the agri ban, is anything to go by then the response this time might be equally inventive. They seem to favour hitting voters and companies rather than bankers and governments, also trying to hit something that they can find a substitute for.

This, combined with the MH17 initial results coming out on Tuesday should make this week interesting. Especially as the MH17 findings being trailed in the MSN say the rebels did it, if true this will send Moscow ballistic.

How the cards seem to be lining up here is the MH17 findings will point a finger at Russia (I don't see how anyone can expect anything else) and this will be used to implement these new sanctions and more NATO military actions.

The ceasefire makes things interesting though, as it prevents the Junta army from escalating militarily. I would expect them to break the ceasefire after the MH17 findings and also blame it on the rebels.

MOSCOW, September 8 (RIA Novosti) - New Sanctions against Russia in energy or finance sectors could trigger an assymetric response from Moscow, such as closing its airspace, Russia’s Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev told the Vedomosti newspaper in an interview released Monday.

“It is they [the West], who should be asked whether there will be new sanctions. But if there are sanctions, linked with energy, [or] further restrictions on our finance sector, we will have to respond asymmetrically. For instance, [with] restrictions in transport area. We act on the premise of friendly relations with our partners, and this is why the sky above Russia is open for flights. But if we are restricted, we will have to answer,” Medvedev added.

MOSCOW, September 7 (RIA Novosti) – The European Union (EU) is ready to review new sanctions it plans to impose on Russia next week if a truce between the Kiev government and independence fighters in southeastern Ukraine holds, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said Sunday.

"We are ready if the ceasefire is durable, and/or if the peace talks start, to review these sanctions,” Van Rompuy told Belgian TV channel VRT, as quoted by Agence France Presse.

"The most important thing was to achieve a ceasefire. There have been a few incidents. We have to wait a bit to see if these incidents will continue or if they are exceptions," Van Rompuy added.

Meanwhile Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk warned the West against cancelling a new round of sanctions against Russia.

“What constitutes a major threat? A situation where there is a peace plan, no shooting, everything is calm, and the world goes back to ‘business as usual’, in other words everything is the way it usually is, and everyone gradually forgets that there was Crimea, there was Ukraine, just like they forget about other conflicts,” Yatsenyuk said Sunday in an interview with the Ukrainian 1+1 TV Channel.

EU leaders, along with US President Barack Obama, agreed to impose new sanctions against Russia on Friday, despite the ceasefire agreement signed on the same day between Kiev and Ukraine’s independence fighters at the meeting of the Contact Group on Ukraine in Minsk.

On Sunday, both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire, with both independence fighters and Kiev forces claiming their innocence.

It has been the unwritten rule since the end of WWII  that the era of carving up your neighbors by military force was over.  Anyone who thinks that Russian gas isn't being used as a political cudgel against the Europeans to back up Putin's landgrabs and threats is a fool.

When have Russian oligarchs, be they Czars or Commisars, not used threats, intimidation and violence to get their way?

Our ignorance of history is appaling.  We have allowed our loathing for  the contemptable and corrupt political leadership of the west to blind us to fallacy of the notion that "the enemy of enemy is my friend".

Putin and his brand of new Russian oligarchs are no "democrats" and no friends of anything but their own interests and ambitions.  "Power corrupts and asolute corrupts absolutely".  Putin et al are just as suseptible to the snare of that truth as any Obama, Bush or Clinton.

This is what is called a "Pearl Harbor" moment.

It is a very old game. The west is trying to do to Putin what they did with the Japanese before WWII. Basically, forced their hand by cutting off oil exports to Japan.

There is a slight problem however, is that the reverse of that old move is quite unlikely to work. In this case, Russia has the energy that Europe needs. Europe only has printed currency that Russia may need, at least temporarily.

The question is, who will blink first, and how many thermonuclear warheads will be involved? Either way, Europe is going to freeze this winter, or bake potatoes in radioactive ash.

Hope the Mona Lisa is in those Swiss vaults already.

The US was totally instrumental in creating the Ukranian coup. Victoria Fcuk the E Nuland is on record confirming the criminal deed done by the US.

In this context, the countries comprising the Europe Union must decide for themselves if they should back a criminal terrorist State like the US or  remain neutral.

China is fuly aware what would happen if Russia is isolated today. Tomorrow it will be their turn.

When the EU confronts Russia, backing the US's criminal deeds and actions it is commiting Hara Kiri. The US couldnt care a damn anyway about these countries as Victoria Fcuk Nuland has already announced US Policy towards the EU.

It makes me ill to live in a country run by clowns, liars, narcissists, and psychopaths like this one is. Just sick.

Daily I feel as though we here on ZH are watching a giant clock affixed to a time bomb wind down, and we are powerless to stop it.

I just don't know what to do anymore, really I don't.

Take care, everyone,

Lin

Just to take care of you and yours is the best you can do to prepare Lin.

Fare thee well if you can.

What are the bourgeois to do, strap on combat boots to go and to freeze in the midst of a Russian Winter? Oh the humanity indeed!
