Anxious EU Leaders Delay Russian Sanctions For "Few Days"

Tyler Durden's picture

Whether it is confidence in Poroshenko's statements that "the ceasefire is holding" or fears over Russia's threats of "asymmetric" retaliation, Europe's leaders - having convinced the Finns not to veto - emerged from their emergency meeting and declared tough new funding sanctions on Russia's big three oil companies... will be "delayed a few days." It would seem - as we noted earlier - Europe is debating whether or not it can last the winter cold better than Russia can withstand the funding lock.

The suspended provisions include barring some Russian state-owned defense and energy companies -- including OAO Gazprom Neft, OAO Rosneft and OAO Transneft -- from raising capital in the EU, according to a European official who spoke on the usual condition of anonymity

As Reuters reports,

The European Union formally adopted a package of new sanctions against Russia on Monday, but said their entry into force would be delayed to leave time to assess whether a ceasefire in Ukraine is holding.

"The entry into force (of the new sanctions) through the publication in the Official Journal will take place in the next few days. This will leave time for an assessment of the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the peace plan," EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy said in a statement.

"Depending on the situation on the ground, the EU stands ready to review the agreed sanctions in whole or in part," he said.

We assume this is today's de-escalation reason for the v-shaped recovery that enabled S&P 500 to regain 2,000 once again.

Stalin attacked Finnland during the Molotov pact. So, Finnland was fighting the Soviets when Adolf got Operation Barabarossa going. The Finns did not choose Adolf. Stalin chose the Finns.

Stalin did attack the Finns first. And then, the Finns decided to ally themselves with the Germans. Nobody forced them, the war with USSR was finished at that time. And no, they didn't "beat" the Russians, they lost part of Karelia before having to agree to an armistice with Stalin.

P.S. Wikipedia is a decent source of info for most (but not all) of the issues.

I was hoping to read about the boomerang today. Russia banning all EU based airlines from flying over the vast Russian territory to Asia and Gazprom's CEO Alexei Miller raising the price of Natural Gas 150% to the EU, shutting off Ukraine for non-payment and demanding payment in Yuan, Rubles or Gold!! Fuck the EU's reserve. This will go in 30 days with Ukraine freezing to death and the EU sending gas back flow. February can get damn cold. Obama needs to send Al Gore on an emergency mission to the EU and Ukraine. As people freeze to death they can find comfort hearing about global warming!

This looks like preplanned theater.  Is it so they can follow through in a couple weeks, who knows.  Is it a show to see the reaction of their citizens, to prep the citizens or to push the "Russia must be stopped" propaganda?

If the EU goes through with this the most distrubing thing to me is that it will show that the people who control the US/UK/Israel (or should I just say the unseen owners of the central banks) have established control of the EU politicians and these politicians no longer consider the welfare of their citizens.  They will be called upon to sacrifice their people's economic well being and then when the people are desperate they can convince them physical war is acceptable or the only way forward.

I would push this even further and am starting to think that this entire campaign is a theater of some kind. The one between USA and Russia who have conspired to it and are going through it as they have planned. At the end each side will gain something, though it is not at all obvious what it is they are each trying to get. Because if this is not a theater, then it is just completely retarded beyond description. At the end of the day, what is the point of escalating against a nuclear state which Russia is? Push hard enough and they will say you either stop that shit, or we will launch tomorrow and then see ya in hell. This is the end game, very simple. So why they keep playing and escalating? IMHO, only to make it all look real and scary. And scary it is I admit.

Politics is apparently a thought-free-zone?

So, Europe is 'stockpiling gas'.  I translate that to, "Europe is buying a larger, than normal amount of gas from vendors - including Russia - now during the summer, and then storing it in case gas is turned off in the winter."

But basically, they are not planning on buying any less gas.  They are buying the same amount, and storing it.

The only difference is WHEN they plan to buy it.  Similarly, Russia is receiving extra money now.  They will not receive less money total.  The only difference is when the purchases happen.

Gas prices go up in winter.  If storage prices are more than the winter-price-increase then this is not efficient behavior.

Russia's predicament is not different.   These regions of Europe are mutually dependent.  Russia will suffer during the winter, and then sell extra during the next summer - at higher prices.

Other than the speeches the idiot politicians will make, what's the difference?  Europe is betting they can budget their gas better than Russia can budget money.  Russia is betting the opposite.

For this to make any sense there has to be an unstated variable.

NATO must keep up the pressure so that the EU can follow in the footsteps of the Ukrainian economic miracle........

http://slavyangrad.org/2014/09/08/statistics-tell-the-tale-irreplaceable...

Statistics tell the tale: Irreplaceable losses for the Ukrainian economy

The published results by the Goskomstat (Federal Bureau of Statistics) of changes to the Ukrainian economy during the first half of 2014 can be shocking. But the most important figures in the situation at hand are not the fact that the GDP fell 4.5% , nor even that the gross domestic product is predicted to fall -7% by the end of the year, but the irreplaceable losses concealed by these frigid statistics—the losses that will destroy the actual possibility of a Ukrainian economic recovery in the future.

We are speaking primarily about the collapse of the industrial sector, which is accelerating. During the period from January to June, the volumes of industrial production shrank by 5.8%, while July alone brought that sector down by another 12%. The most profound damage was suffered by the coal sector (-28.7%), the automobile production (-23.8%), the chemical manufacture (-22.2%), the oil refining sector (-15.9%), the rubber industry (-13.8%), metallurgy (-12.3%), and furniture production (-12.5%). Clutched by war, the Lugansk and Donetsk regions have lost 56% and 28.5%, respectively, of their industrial potential. The crisis of the component supply from Donbass in turn led to the collapse of the industrial giant of Zaporozhie (ZAZ). This enterprise lowered its production volume by 98.9%, and by October will probably stop all manufacturing, leaving 21,000 workers out of the street.

The industrial potential was also dented by the fall in exports to Russia, which ranged from 25% to 70% over the different sectors. For example, automobile production lost 40% of all exports, metallurgy – 32.6%, agricultural – 37%. It must be noted that these horrific statistical indicators include the period during which Ukraine had a legitimate government, and economic relationships with Russia were actively developed.

Highly paid by western corporations and likely on the CIA payroll, these sluts try to provoke sane religious and conservative family values Russians. Their aim is to so disgust normal people that some Russians will react against these helpless MTV style sluts and thus make good western news coverage showing the evil Russian state picking on tiny little innocent girls just seeking an outlet for their music. Pussy riot has been said to have political "Sugar Daddies". So I understand why they would be called whores or prostitutes by conservatives... Are you a conservative Icon?

Well if you have inflexibility, mob mentality, or Group think about lynching people,... that seem to fit a description of the criminal mind... then you are just an "Unthinking Thug".

Best of Luck.

Well I should explain I don't look for buddies in this blog or other blogs. That separates me from the followers and the joiners I suppose. I just post stuff and most I expect is some ego boost... so I've not chased posters in anyway.

The good thing is that society has become so desensitized to that kind of crap that the only way they can get attention now is to self immolate.

Yay.

A shortage of natural gas is about more than sitting cold in your home, it is about keeping business going and your economy working. It is not something to take lightly. At this point Putin holds all the cards, this will become more obvious as winter nears and events unfold.  It seems both Russia and many of the separatist in Eastern Ukraine would support federalization.

Surely, no reason exist for Kiev to be opposed other than a loss of power. A more federalized government is also the most plausible way of keeping Ukraine intact. Support for sanctions is mixed in Europe as some countries fear Russia and have an ax to grind with Putin while others wish to move forward. Saber rattling has only lead to death and destruction.  As I see it little good will come from further bloodshed and it is time for the West to stop sending money to Kiev so they can ramp up the violence and continue the civil war. More on the progress being made in the article below.
