Mapping Record US Obesity By State

Tyler Durden's picture

Adult obesity rates remained high overall, increased in six states (Alaska, Delaware, Idaho, New Jersey, Tennessee and Wyoming) in the past year, and did not decrease in any. According to a new report, despite the plunge in McDonalds' Sales, rates of obesity now exceed 35% for the first time in two states, are at or above 30% in 20 states and are not below 21% in any. Mississippi and West Virginia tied for having the highest adult obesity rate in the United States at 35.1%, while Colorado had the lowest at 21.3%. Nine out of the 10 states with the highest obesity rates are in the South.

US Obesity goes from bad to disastrous over the next 15 years...

As Trust for America's Health reports,

Findings reveal that significant geographic, income, racial, and ethnic disparities persist, with obesity rates highest in the South and among Blacks, Latinos and lower-income, less-educated Americans. The report also found that more than one in ten children become obese as early as ages 2 to 5.

Obesity rates remain higher among Black and Latino communities than among Whites:

  • Adult obesity rates for Blacks are at or above 40 percent in 11 states, 35 percent in 29 states and 30 percent in 41 states.
  • Rates of adult obesity among Latinos exceeded 35 percent in five states and 30 percent in 23 states.
Among Whites, adult obesity rates topped 30 percent in 10 states.
  • Nine out of the 10 states with the highest obesity rates are in the South.
  • Baby Boomers (45-to 64-year-olds)* have the highest obesity rates of any age group – topping 35 percent in 17 states and 30 percent in 41 states.
  • More than 33 percent of adults 18 and older who earn less than $15,000 per year are obese, compared with 25.4 percent who earn at least $50,000 per year.
  • More than 6 percent of adults are severely obese; the number of severely obese adults has quadrupled in the past 30 years.

The Solution...

Recommendations, which were based on a series of in-depth interviews with public health experts in Black and Latino communities around the country, included:

Expanding access to affordable healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity by increasing resources for programs, connecting obesity-prevention initiatives with other ongoing community programs, and other approaches;

Providing education and addressing cultural differences to both improve people’s knowledge about nutrition and physical activity and make initiatives more relevant to their daily lives; and

Making sustainability, community input, involvement and shared leadership top priorities of obesity-prevention initiatives from the outset.

*  *  *

What is perhaps most worrisome, as we noted previously, is the implied cost of this growing obesity epidemic if these forecasts are even close to reality.

That's right. Living out of the back of my truck with no place to cook and working overtime, Jack-in-the_Box and McDonalds was the best way to get the calories I needed. I even won free food when Millard Hampton took silver in the Olympics. Now my caloric intake is less than half of what it used to be and I very seldom eat fast food.

Lay this whole health problem right at the feet of 1.  GMO  2. Factory farming  3. FDA that looks the other way  4.  Drugs being fed to "factory farmed animals" who live their "lives" in worse conditions that any soul could stomach.  5. A public that has been brought up on "food" that is dependent on additives and great amounts of subsidized corn syrup. 6. A public that does not know how to read a label and a gov. that allows obscure labelling to disguise the input of questionable ingerdients.

7. A country that does not know where food comes from and is seduced by "fast food chains that supplement with "soylent beef pink slime"  and nobody who cares to allow this to be labelled.

8. A country that is so heavily lobbied into ill health.  Who are allowing the patenting of DNA, and all seeds for human health.

9. A country who thinks that an Emergency OutPatient visit for a simple medical problem can cost as much as $10,000?  So citizen health is subordinate to profit.  Let the stocks bubble.

10. A country who disguises the actual cost of food by falsifying inflation.

11. A country that demonizes certain segments,  And glorifies the white rich and "hangers on for political correctness".  Do not kid yourself.  Nobody living the banker life is eating the crap the other people are.

12. I give up....USA is fuked.

People lack meaning in life. They are empty and are trying to fill the void. We live in a consumption economy and society because we have been marketed to for that exact purpose. All past values have been discredited and replaced with "stuff". When you are told that to find contentment in your work is to be taken advantage of by your employer and to borrow and spend for your pleasure is the only real satisfaction. A glorious plate of food fills the hole nicely.

But seriously, is there ANYTHING that we are responsible for or is it all someone else's fault? There will always be someone trying to fuck us. That is the nature of life. Get used to it.

The largest part of the issue is willful ignorance.  Nobody wants to hear that Mountain Dew, McDonalds, Olive "Garden, and healthy whole grains aren't good for them.

My age group peers, at least here, for the most part have BMI>30, pot bellies, and are on multiple 'scrips just to survive. They feel like shit all the time but they damn sure know the stats of the NFL's best QBs.

Nutrtition, health, fitness? Not so much.

It's not a lack of intelligence, it is simply too much trust in the PTB coupled with intellectual laziness.

It may not be the eating, vs. what is being eaten.

For example, what is really in our food?

One can eat all the "organic food" one wants, but unless one grows said food oneself, one will not truly know what was in the water, what was in the seeds, what hormones was given to the animals, what was in the fertilizer, etc.

Much like food allergies. Where were all of these 30 years ago?

Foamy the squirrel tells it as it is.......Sort of....

I don't think it's what is in the food, it may well be what's NOT in the food.

Got laid off recently and have been trying to live on unemployment from one state while living in another with a much higher cost of living. Trying to keep a roof over our head we ran into a brick wall and had to start using what we had, rather than what we used to have. One thing I noticed was, even though volume was consistent, we were ALWAYS hungry. MRE entrees were actually more satisfying than, say, a can of beans or Kraft Mac & C, even though there was less of it. Vitamin/mineral supplements actually helped.

Reminded me of the old stories about rabbit starvation in he frontier days. People would literally starve to death on a full stomach because of the lack of certain nutrients.

You're right Ivanovich:  You don't understand the obesity thing.  It turns out that it's more complicated than Eating too much and not exercising enough...

There's more to the story: The dirty little secret that Agrobusiness and the Food Industry does not want you to know, is that the nutritional value of US food has dropped in recent decadesThis causes the nutrient-hungry body to compensate the lack of quality for quantity.

That's why more educated and higher earning people are slimmer (in part):  Besides watching how much they eat and exercise, they watch WHAT they eat.  They tend to eat more nutritious (less processed) food, rather than the hi-calory shit that's full of fats, carbs, salts and chemicals - but lacking in natural fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Even without injuries, people that suffer from obesity have drastically reduced mobility. Carrying around a large amount of extra bulk, they are almost always out of breath, unable to bend, put their shoes on, get out of a chair, or walk unaided for more than a few paces.

Climbing stairs is often out of the question for the massively overweight, and obesity on such a scale can also cause breathing problems while sleeping. Obesity occurs over a period of time, is hard to combat, the bottom line, it detracts from the quality of life and there is no fun in being truly fat.

I'm not particularly interested in saving the obese from themselves but I'm very concerned about the costs that the obese impose on others through higher health insurance rates, and for the taxpayers who pay for Medicaid, Medicare, and social security disability benefits.  More on the cost of this growing problem in the article below.

Climbing (and descending) a standard 13-tread flight of stairs, twice a day (morning and evening) is good for a 10kg weight loss over the course of a year (providing all other factors remain constant).

Regular "Stair exercise" has been clearly (and repetitively) shown to have added benefits, mainly balance. Elderlies who HAVE to go upstairs to bed, are FAR LESS likely to have a falls history . . . . .

Maybe it's time to ban elevators / escalators?? (no such luck!)

Another reason why Barry [and the MIC behind him] are desperate for moar illegals ... cannon fodder who will be granted citizenship after serving 4 years. Makes sense. In the past three months I've heard more then one general on NPR describe the desperate position the USA military is in trying to find satisfatory recruits; they both bluntly said the merikan yutes are on too many drugs, too fat or have a felony criminal record thus disqualifying them for the military.

Both generals also said they are fighting to lower the admission requirements. Just what we need!

Everything is a freaking felony now, including the failure to pay your taxes/health care insurance.

Nah, let's write a few thousand more and see how that works out.

On a good note, once the illegals are citizens, they will be subject to the same bureaucracy and jack boots that are up our asses now.

Eat real food.  Maybe have a salad for lunch instead of a burger.  Get on the damned stair climber for 15 minutes a day.  Cutting out white flour and high fructose corn syrup alone will probably improve your health by an order of magnitude.  And the weird thing is, you don't feel hungry all the time (which really took my by surprise).

Being a smoker, even I made dramatic strides in cholesterol, trigs and blood pressure with my VERY MODEST concessions to eating healthy.  I'm down to only 5 lbs. over my weight graduating college, which was a long damned time ago.

The biggest contribution to weight gain is insulin spike from consuming too much sugar in a short period of time. 15-20grams of sugar per hour is what I recommend.

Besides that, eat lots of fat. it's filling and it's not hard on the liver like protein. carbs fall under sugar.

Hey NoDebt - actually you can't be called a weightist but you can be called ignorant, at best, or most likely stupid. I'm calling it. At the risk of casting pearls before swine I suggest that you Google 'whole body inflammation' and educate yourself - if that's possible. Sure there are people who are obese because they are piggish - but even those people deserve compassion. Who wants to look like that - especially when there are people like you ready and more than willing to do everything possible to make them feel ashamed of who they are.

But the fact is - even though nasty people like you are for whatever reason willing to demean other people - the real reason that most 'fat' people have the problem that they do is that the only food they have access to or, in many cases, the only food they are accustomed to, is industrial poison. So go ahead and blame the victim. I'll bet there's a great job waiting for you as a guard at a FEMA camp - you'll probably be the one who decides "left" or "right". The only requirement for the job is an enthusiastic willingness to judge others as if you aren't a profoundly defective soul yourself.

Not so much touchy as more than just offended by people who would have been card-carrying KKK in the good old days but who can't hide under sheets and burn crosses anymore so they've found a new target in "fat" people.

And even if this is an old thread and it probably doesn't matter Oldwood I'm 72 years old, 150 and 5' 10" all my adult life, and I can run a 7 minute mile and bench press my own weight. And if given the chance I could break any bone I chose in your body with one hand or foot.

That sure would be fun.

I know its fashionable to blame obesity on slack morals, faulty willpower, fried foods and hoo-hoos, but the reality is that most obesity is the direct result of whole body inflammation. Granted this inflammation is largely to inflammatory foods in the diet, but it is a mistake to think that all fat people are pigs. Many if not most of them are victims of dead industrial food that is about the only kind of food they have access to. Poverty locks this in - there really is no escape.

I've noticed that obesity and disabilities and diseases of various kinds exist in a sort of circular downward spiral, especially amongst middle aged people.  Sort of like addictions.

What happens is the following:

1)  get a major disability or disease, can't move around as much

2)  sit around watching TV and chowing down, get obese

3)  now that you are obese, movement even more restricted

Or you could start with obesity, which then leads to disease, which then disables you more leading to more obesity, etc.

I cannot tell you how many obese people are also chronically ill and disabled, and vice versa.  You don't see thin people in wheelchairs anymore, they are all fat.

And the doctors keep these people going by keeping them on all sorts of meds and procedures, paid for by you and me.

Solution?

The human body is being slammed with things that taste like food, but are empty. This tells the brain to eat more to get essential nutrition, but none is ever given. It's all garbage.

A non-GMO diet, no corn syrup, no or little soy (non-GMO), no artificial sweeteners, very little wheat. Grow a garden, a really big one fed with compost. Eat range-fed protein.

If they unplug from the industrial agriculture system, they'll be healthy. Food from grocery stores is devoid of nutrition. Vegetables look like vegetables, but there is nothing to them. For example: If you send an organic free-range chicken egg and a CAFO egg to a lab, the free-range has 300-500% higher nutrition, and far less bad stuff.

Even better yet, become a permaculture farmer. I did.

Yes and back then it was the norm to "shame" an overwieght person.  If you remember back in the mid to late 80's perhaps (maybe early 90's) there was a move by the government and media to embrace your "fatness".  For years the "love your body, no matter how fat you are" was the national narrative, mostly concerning a woman's body and it was verboten and politically incorrect to disagree.  At the time anorexia and bulimia was all the rage.   A few decades later, when obesity became more common place and society was conditioned by the government to ignore it, NOW the narrative is to address the obesity problem in the US.   I believe this would fall under the heading of "unintended consequences" as a result of a "feel good" government thought police blitzkrieg.   Currently shaming isn't considered an option but the government's narrative has definitely done a 180 and they are enacting a flurry of laws attempting to prevent a person's free will as it pertains to the intake of food and drink.   Quite frankly I'd rather resort to shaming as I don't see why fit people should be "penalized" because of the actions of a certain group (the obese).

Hell if a thin, fit guy wants to eat an entire pizza and down it with a gallon of soda, then so be it.  If he's blessed with those types of genetics then good for him, meanwhile I think I gained 5 lbs just writing about eating a pizza and drinking a large soda. Just because I can't get a way with it doesn't mean the guy who can should have to be subject to restrictions that don't appear to affect him.  I know this hasn't became illegal yet but give a Bloomberg, fascist Authority enough time anything is likely to happen.

Ok you guys too?  What's the big deal here?  It's not as if people that are obese are hiding out, just walk out your front door.  What it is is the virtual and real world values again as we love to make these heat maps and the infographics creators are just screaming for recognition on their pretty graphics.  That's what this is all about and we do nothing as we can't quantiate fat people, education is where it counts.

So here's yet one more failing model where the dupees think all you have to do is model and quantiate it and the problem will fix itself.

http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2014/09/obesity-just-as-big-as-ever-in-us...

You folks do a good job with fake stats here all the time and why I read.  We all know obesity is an issue and economic times are a part of the reason but it isn't all of it.  We get stupid as a few weeks ago some idiot wrote a study saying that it's lack of exercise and not over eating that's causing the obesity problem, excuse me, food still has to go in, unless you have one of those very rare diseases.

Granted, keeping track of general numbers, is ok, but look where they go with it and go nuts with pretty heat maps and all kinds of other crap.  I just wrote about the pre-diabetes diagnosis as that turns otherwise healthy people into patients as many will never develop diabetes.  It's a good video at the link as they go so far with pre-clinical to have pre-acne and nobody's even broke out with a pimple yet.  We are all diagnosed "pre death" if you didn't know that.  So today some idiot puts out a study saying 15% of diagnosed pre-diabetes are also more susceptible to cancer.  Ok, now keep in mind the pre-diabetes study is flawed as everyone won't develop diabetes and they also stated the test for pre-diabetes was flawed.

Why in the hell not do a study on people that actually have diabetes?  Is this sounding like market logic?  Yeah, seems that way to me too.

http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2014/07/medical-journal-says-pre-diabetes...

So as well as the markets, you get code hosed over in healthcare too.  We need to do something else besides quantitating fat people and complimenting all the folks who make pretty heat maps.

Most regional variations can be explained by race.  Pretty soon, CA, AZ, etc will be amnong the fattest states as they will continue to become more Hispanic.

Among whites, the fattest states are in the Midwest (think that fat guy who makes those boring movies).   The South is second.  B oth regions are predominately Northern Europeran (Brits in the South, Germans and Scands in the midwest.) Designed fpr storing all that food for the harsh N. European winters.  Also many N. Europeans are not designed for the grain diets of the Mediterranean.  They get diabetis II and they get fat.

One more article like this and Medicare is going to commit suicide.

What a crock of shit.  Not even a whiff of pseudo-science involved.  This site must be an extraterrestial scoping study of human behavior.  2030 ya gotta be kidding me.

Sorry, but it's simply laziness. Consume more calories than you burn...weight gain. Simple math. These people see a few pounds gained and don't nip it in the bud early via some simple excercise and eating a bit less.

Next thing you know, it's next year and 50 pounds heavier, and their lifestyle and habits are now completely fucked.

The problem now is they see the simple way out is via subsized lap band surgery. What a fucking joke. We make it easier for them to hop on a .gov subsidized skooter to go shopping at Walmart and the liquor store.

Fuck that. They need to shut those subsidies down and if there is a subsidy...it should be for a gym membership.

I can't stand when I gain 2 pounds...I feel like a pile of shit and do something about it. Can't for the life of me understand how a person can gain weight, year after year, and then turn around and they are 50-100 pounds more than they should weigh, and not care.

First thing these fuckers should do is stop consuming sugar....all forms of it. Learn what foods have it and what form it's in. Stop drinking soda and juice. No cookies, cakes, candy or bread. These people will say they don't eat that stuff, but they do.

Second thing is get off your ass and MOVE. ANYWHERE. Even if it's for 5 minutes. Walk out the door to the fucking side walk and back inside again. Do some fucking thing other than watch TV or sleep.

I jog like 35 miles a week and I got up to 179 fat fucking pounds. It was like carrying two gallons of extra water on a 10k daily run. I got almased and quit eating and continued jogging and I weigh 164 and 1/2 pounds. I feel much better and it is easier to jog. Took me about 8 weeks. I hate fat people even when it is me.

That was part of my point...I hate myself too when I gain too much weight. It's a mindset, and part of that mindset is to stop being lazy.

Two of the best Thomas Jefferson quotes relating to this subject:

"Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning"

"Of all the cankers of human happiness, none corrodes with so silent, yet so baneful an influence, as indolence"

Just looking at fat people, even thinking about those disgusting bastards, makes me sick to my stomach.

Dear consumers of fast food and prepackaged "food" of all descriptions:

You are farmed from birth by the high profit food industry, later to be harvested by Big Medicine and Big Pharma...the object is to keep you consuming as much as possible and dying after writing your last cheque to the avaricious.

Commit a revolutionary act: Ride a bike to work, walk to the corner store and read a few books like "The Paleo Solution" or "Wheat Belly" for a comprehensive set of health recommendations.

My son and I this month have been bucking and splitting the 5 cords of firewood that will be needed for his digs in the Rockies this winter.  Despite the beer, am back to my (varsity tennis) college weight.  I highly reccomend it.  Besides, when you chop your own firewood, it warms you twice.

It warms you when you cut the logs, when you load them into the truck, when you unload, split, and stack the wood...

And finally when you burn it.
