Ukraine's Choreographed Civil War, As Revealed By Wikileaks
Think the deadly events in a civil-war ridden Ukraine are proceeding unscripted, and without US supervision and/or direction? Think again.
Below is an excerpt from a formerly confidential memo, leaked by Wikileaks, and authored by former US ambassador to Russia, William J. Burns, to the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The punchline: the memo is dated February 1, 2008.
Ukraine and Georgia's NATO aspirations not only touch a raw nerve in Russia, they engender serious concerns about the consequences for stability in the region. Not only does Russia perceive encirclement, and efforts to undermine Russia's influence in the region, but it also fears unpredictable and uncontrolled consequences which would seriously affect Russian security interests. Experts tell us that Russia is particularly worried that the strong divisions in Ukraine over NATO membership, with much of the ethnic-Russian community against membership, could lead to a major split, involving violence or at worst, civil war. In that eventuality, Russia would have to decide whether to intervene; a decision Russia does not want to have to face.
So, if Russia does "not want to face" said decision which could and has led to the violence and civil war that is now a daily staple of market-moving newsflow out of Eastern Europe, why not let the US state department force the decision upon Russia?

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Russia "perceives encirclement." Despite numerous assurances given to the Russians after the collapse of the USSR, NATO expanded by admitting the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland in 1999. In 2004, NATO added the Baltic countries (Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia) as well as Slovakia, Slovenia, Bulgaria and Romania. Look at a map of Europe and try to see things from the Russian point of view. Wouldn't you fear a NATO first strike if NATO, now expanded to 28 member states, positioned new missles in Poland and the Czech Republic and began a nearly continuous series of "war games" on your border? And after seeing the role of NATO in Afghanistan and Libya, after hearing from Victoria Nuland, after the overthrow of an elected government in Ukraine, how would you feel about US insistence that Ukraine become part of NATO? I think I would feel not just encircled, but under attack.
Go Lemmiwinks! Stop Wikileaks!
You can not have US hegemony at the same time that the trading relationship between EU and Russia is strengthening. The reckless neocons in DC prefer a war benefiting their ruling class rather than peace and prosperity for all. I hope those same neocons are becoming increasingly aware of the great awakening. Their pronouncements for war may be what eventually kills them. Hopefully.
It appears that an actual invasion and seizure of another sovereign state (wait; make that two sovereign states) is acceptable while "meddling" is the greater sin that must not be tolerated....it also appears that a large number of russian security operatives post here at zerohedge. The great US Patriot El Vaquero blathers on about the US "planning" this subterfuge and "devious" CIA secretly meeting in the Ukraine while Russia actually rolls tanks, invades neighboring countries killing people and destroying economies......and shoots down airplanes full of non-combatants......of course, proof that the US offers of a missile shootdown by russian troops is to be impugned and ignored. Shout louder Vaq about the US involvement but it won't hide the truth. Vaq supposes that the Russian bear is again marauding through eastern Europe to save itself from the marauding CIA. Right. Any Eastern European country in it's right mind is going to try it's best to join NATO....before the Bear can take a bite out of them. Keep pumping out the disinformation koolaid Vaq, your buddies at the new KGB love it...
Using your kind of thinking you are probably a State Dept troll.
Almost nothing you said is actually backed up by facts.
Speaking of "actual invasios and seizure of another sovereign states"
it's NOT Russia but USA who attacked Iraq(1st time) in 1990.
It's NOT Russia but USA who bombed Iraq during the 1990s.
Its' NOT Russia but USA who lied Iraq had imaginary "weapons of mass distraction" during 2001-2003.
It's NOT Russia but USA who attacked and occupied Iraq(2nd time) in 2003.
It's NOT Russia but USA who attacked and occupied Afghanistan in 2001
It's NOT Russia but USA who has attacked and bombed Pakistan, Yemen, Syria, Lybia, Sudan, etc, etc,
It's NOT Russia but USA who has attacked and bombed Iraq(3rd time) in 2014.
Indeed, Facts are stupid things like Ronnie said. Aren't you ashamed to be such a liar?
I agree, but LOL, I like the 'Weapons Of Mass Distraction' most, but I've always thought it's the preferred weapon of secret services.
Petko pider, Russia did not invade Crimea because they were there already.
Ok glad we cleared that one up.
Nice try turd blossom. You outrage over the shooting down of airplanes full of non-combatants surely then extends to Iran Air 655, shot down with 290 pax, including 66 children, by USS VIncennes while cruising in Iranian waters. The captain and crew were later awared service medals for their wonderful service, and HW Bush said "I will never apologise for the US, no matter what the facts are". And the fact is that the Vincennes deliberately fired on the civilian flight, it was no accident, at best it was gross incompetence.
"Russia would have to decide whether to intervene; a decision Russia does not want to have to face. "
2008 is not 2014. things change in 6 years one could easily postulate. no?
but that doesn't matter to the wankers in the state dept.
most of them have just figured out where UE is.
good plan, keep taunting the Bear.
fools.
No surprise that the low life's in the US gov (Empire of Chaos, as per Escobar) will stoop to such a level.
It doesn't matter to them the suffering they cause. Bringing Armageddon on the Christians of the Middle East (my people among them) wasn't enough for them. Aiding and abetting jihadi liver eaters in the region wasn't enough for them. Now they are supporting fascists and nazis in Ukraine.
Damn the US and EU to Hell.
Why is it articles always NEVER fail to mention the "Russian influence" meme but they never mention the influence the EU, USA and NATO extend over countries and regions? \
Oh Russian influence = ALWAYS bad, but EU, USA/NATO influnce is ALWAYS good. Ok, got it.
This whole thing is so scripted that even "surprises" don't surprise anymore at this point.
