GBP Spikes As YouGov Poll Shows 52% "No" To Scottish Independence

Tyler Durden's picture

An early leak?

And YouGov...

Shows a big shift from last week...

And the reaction

But GBP is fading the initial ramp for now... because polls are never rigged, right?

There are a lot of scare stories in the media in the UK, the BBC has gone into overdrive. The gist of it is, if Scotland says yes to independence they can kiss thousands of jobs goodbye. Now in Scotland jobs are a real issue, it will make many voters think twice.

I would like to see Scotland vote Yes, but I'm not sure if it will happen.

I'm pretty confident this will end with victory for the NO side. Scaremongering works, but people don't want to admit it so when some guy call around and ask, people are bold and tell the englishmen to get out, but when they stand alone in the voting box and things really matter they become cowards. And those who are still undecided will most certainly end up as majority no.

So....what is the opposite of "independence"....I'm just wondering.

I'm not independent to do a lot of things.  I can't drive any vehicle I want because what I want...THEY won't register.

I'm not independent to live in any structure I want because what I "want" isn't acceptable to the code/rule makers.

I'm not independent to select my healthcare provider because the AMA twisted Washington's arm and FORCES me to see a Dr. for every little thing.  (of course, the Dr.s have outsourced all that to LVNs, and RNs, but that's okay as long as we're forced to give the DR a cut.

Who in their right mind would NOT choose to be independent of any institution?   Public or Private!!!

Ohhhhh well the message is clear, if your YES don't bother to vote, your beat already, right????

Utter horseshit, polls never call first time voters or those recently registered and haven't voted yet, it's sadly why Obozo won the last election handily and to everyone's shock on the right, because polls are completely designed for "likely to vote" polling, and from what I've read, the Yes on Independence camp has been registering record amounts of first time voters!

I'm predicting 60/40 yes for independence when they count them!! I said 65/35 last week, but I may have just finished watching Braveheart when I said that!

It was not much of a spike and the market was way oversold. The bigger question if how the pound will fair going forward and after the vote.

Several complex issues surround the idea of going off on their own. If Scotland wants independence then so be it, but sorting out the political and economic ties with the rest of the UK, may be difficult. Scotland has to be allowed to stand on its own two feet without the rest of the UK financially and economically supporting it. The Euro proves that more than one sovereign country cannot easily use the same currency.

Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Italy and Spain have discovered that you cannot have full independence and share a currency. Another problem is that if the UK Government is to agreeable to a separation, will Wales and Northern Ireland move towards independence? That might encourage similar movements in Catalonia, Belgium, Northern League in Italy, Basques, Cornish, and among the Poles.  More on the issues surrounding the pound and an independent Scotland in the article below.

5 million Scots (of the 65 million UK citizens) will control 90% of all of the UK's North Sea oil and gas reserves.

From what I have digested the prevailing attitude in Scotland's YES campaign is less nationalistic than against the neoliberal and neoconservative policies of consecutive UK Labour and Conservative governments.

Simlpy stated they want more jobs and less financial fraud, war and intrigue.

I think they'll make out OK..

Sorry Ann, generally like what you write but you're a bit off here.

The British Empire, when it existed, was relatively benign.  I didn't say it was benign, just relatively so compared to most empires that have existed.

And the British Empire no longer exists, so Scotland does not face a choice about continuing to be part of that empire, just part of the UK, which currently occupies an island off the west coast of continental Europe, plus a bit of the island to its west.

Personally I'm baracking for a Yes vote to actually free the English from the anti-democratic structures supported by welfare-dependent Scotland which currently provides a stronghold for Labor governments in the UK.  It is those governments whose social engineering has actively subverted national control, the economy and culture of the UK.

Vote Yes to free England.

I'm pretty sure people were always in kingdoms, operated by kings. The concept of a corporate chartered nation state is of relative novelty, but to suggest that people be freed from the concept of king and kingdom? Not happenin' unless there is a mass psychological shift, i.e. a global ascension up the consciousness ladder.

Yup, seems like humans are getting dumber, not smarter.

-----

But a tiny fraction of us are working on means to leave earth and be free.  Fortunately, human predators can't run their enslavement game in outer space, because the time, effort and expense to find and chase after people in outer space enormously exceeds anything they might be able to recover from outer-space liberty lovers.

So yeah, humans are earth are toast... forever.

I am an engineer, and in the non-lamest sense possible, 'scientist,' as in I value experiment as my very lifeblood.

The gross misappropriation of manpower is not by accident. A team of 100 able and wise mechanical and aerospace engineers could build you the Starship Enterprise to truly work.

Even one man can go live up in space all by hisself. Believe, and work yer ass off until it comes true. :-)

p.s. as the devil Skateboarder on the other shoulder, I should mention Fuku, we're all dead, so why bother. Good night everybody.

An issue that apparently nobody but me ever mentions is... the existence of "frontiers" on earth throughout most of human history, the absense of frontiers in the past few decades, and the consequences of there being "no place to run, hide and be free" for the best, bravest, brightest and most creative ~0.001% of mankind.

I agree with you about what 100 able and wise scientist-engineers could do.  Though they wouldn't be able to create warp drive or transporters, they could make a solar-system worthy spacecraft with sufficient technologies to survive in space permanently... which is the requirement to escape the human predators.

The private endeavor I'm working on gets into space in a circuitous manner, perhaps with some collaboration with Elon Musk when the time comes (not sure, depends on how everything plays out).  Once we get our smarter-than-human inorganic conscious entities running faster than human consciousness, we can make 100 (or 1000, or 10,000 or more) copies and do exactly what you say... except without paying human scientists, just electric bills.  At that point our internal capabilities will grow so quickly (exponentially), whether we need assistance from Elon Musk is difficult to know.  But he is doing good work, apparently.

Our problem is, we cannot accept funding from government or large corporations, because they would steal the results when they were ready, and that would be the end of mankind in short order.

I doubt people realize how astronomically dangerous "the singularity" is in the hands of any government or corporation... or how magnificent the future can become for those of us who are honest, ethical, productive, benevolent human beings when we and our inorganic comrades leave earth and engineer the universe into a great place to live and play.
