Russia Warns Obama's "Two-Faced" Strategy In Syria Will Lead To "Huge Escalation In Middle East & Africa"

Tyler Durden's picture

If the West bombs Islamic State militants in Syria without consulting Damascus, LiveLeak reports that the anti-ISIS alliance may use the occasion to launch airstrikes against President Bashar Assad’s forces, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Clearly comprehending that Obama's new strategy against ISIS in Syria is all about pushing the Qatar pipeline through (as was the impetus behind the 2013 intervention push), Russia is pushing back noting that the it is using ISIS as a pretext for bombing Syrian government forces and warning that "such a development would lead to a huge escalation of conflict in the Middle East and North Africa."

As LiveLeak reports,

“There are reasons to suspect that air strikes on Syrian territory may target not only areas controlled by Islamic State militants, but the government troops may also be attacked on the quiet to weaken the positions of Bashar Assad’s army,” Lavrov said Tuesday. Such a development would lead to a huge escalation of conflict in the Middle East and North Africa, Lavrov told reporters in Moscow after a meeting with the foreign minister of Mali.

Moscow is urging the West to respect international law and undertake such acts only with the approval of the legitimate government of a state, Lavrov said.

“Not a single country should have its own plans on such issues. There can be only combined, collective, univocal actions. Only this way can a result be achieved,” he said.

...

Russia has long warned its western partners about the threat posed by Islamic State, al-Qaeda and other groups that later merged into the Islamic Front, Lavrov said.

“We have repeatedly suggested to the US, the EU and leading European states to realize the extent of this threat. We have called on the UN to resolutely condemn terrorist attacks staged by Islamists in Syria. But we were told that it was Bashar Assad’s politics that gave rise to terrorism, and that denouncing such acts was possible only alongside with the demand for his resignation,” Lavrov said.

In Moscow’s view, this represents “a double standard” and an attempt to justify terrorism.

Up until the Syrian conflict, Russia and the West were unanimous that terrorism cannot be justified “no matter what motive was behind them,” Lavrov said. But in case with Syria the West had a “different, two-faced stance.”

It was only when the terrorism threat which originated in Libya crept to Lebanon and then Iraq that Western countries realized it was time to deal with that, Lavrov said.

“Having admitted it with a huge delay, western partners for some reason think that this threat should be eliminated on the territory of Iraq, while on the territory of Syria it might be left to the consideration of those who conduct the operation,” Lavrov said.

The US agreed its airstrikes against Islamic State militants on Iraqi territory with Baghdad, Lavrov said. However, “it was rumored... no such permission was required from the government of Syria because they claim ‘Assad should resign and his regime should be overthrown’.” Lavrov said that there could be no different interpretation when it comes to the common interests of the West, Russia and other states: “Terrorist threats must be eliminated and terrorists liquidated,” he said.

Of course - what this is all really about is the Qatar pipeline...

Specifically, the issue at hand is the green part of the proposed pipeline: as explained above, it simply can't happen as long as Russia is alligned with Assad.

So there you have it: Qatar doing everything it can to promote bloodshed, death and destruction by using not Syrian rebels, but mercenaries: professional citizens who are paid handsomely to fight and kill members of the elected regime (unpopular as it may be), for what? So that the unimaginably rich emirs of Qatar can get even richer. Although it is not as if Russia is blameless: all it wants is to preserve its own strategic leverage over Europe by being the biggest external provider of natgas to the continent through its own pipelines. Should Nabucco come into existence, Gazpromia would be very, very angry and make far less money!

*  *  *

No wonder Putin is pissed - Obama has (for now) got his way from a year ago in Syria...blowback coming soon.

Qatar would be much better off using nat gas to manufacture fertilizer and host of other petrochemicals for export to  markets globally and therby achieve added value.  Problem is it would not satisfy Neocon aim to weaken  Russia and EU dependance on Russian gas.  Similarly, Russia should invest in more fertilizer and chemicals to supply China. In the end it is all about energy and food.

If fiat Yuan is strong then China may finance the wars, and can sit back.  Someone will have to keep BRICs alive and gather/support the weak emerging market central banks.

I keep having images of Putin in a Judo ring or fight club, while keeping a chess game going off on the side.  Setting up battlefronts.  It will be nearly impossible for SouthStream to get funded or done unless the west backs down or there is some new large imbroglio or fiat collapse or central bank collapse.   Winter arrives.

If anyone besides Saudi Arabia and Qatar have anything to gain, its Europe which would love an additional natural gas pipeline going through Syria to Europe. Less reliance on Russia for Natural gas will shift power and will likely weaken world natural gas prices.

The Nabucco pipe line does not pass through Syria, the pipe line in the picture given above with this article may be planned to connect to the Nabucco pipe line, in Turkey, but it is not the Nabucco.  Nabacco oiigin is Georgia, Azerbaija and east . . .

Nabucco pipe line east ad west parts .  http://www.encyclopedia.vbxml.net/File:Nabucco_Gas_Pipeline-en.svg

The Islamic Pipeline is planned to pass from Iran through Iraq to Syria, the supply via pipe under sea to Greece (or ship) and on to rest of Europe, by passing Turkey, though supply would be Iranian originated gas but also from the North Dome/South Pars, area shared with Quatar. Syria present supports that pipeline. USA wants this pipe line from Quatar via Saudi. ad on to Europe via Turkey

Thu, 09/11/2014 - 19:06 | 5208781 Fíréan
Fíréan's picture

Syria presently supports Iran and is supported by both Iran ( Shiite) and Russia.

Quatar, Saudi( both predominantly Sunni), Isreal and Turkey don't support Syria as is ( present rulers), and they don't support Iran or Russia. And the Iranian pipeline takes Turkey out the picture.

USA supports Isreal and Saudi and Quatar, and Turkey  ( but could make a deal with Iran if they give up nuclear, tho' Isreal wouldn't go with that one, and Iran is pro Russia)

The original Nabucco takes partially Russia out of the picture yet there is insufficient gas at the source to fully supply Europe, and those countries could become pro Russia, which they have close borders,in the future.

A well written article from 2013, (with source notes):

Is it okay and legal to just select a country and drop bombs on it? I mean like in Iraq, we decided we didn’t like what we saw going on over there so we dropped bombs on them. They did not attack us, or even threaten to do so.  Now, we don’t like what we see going on in Syria, so we bomb them. Do the people who live in those countries have any say in any of this?  If we are truly spreading ‘democracy’ should we not let them vote on bombing them?

If the Russians don’t like what they see going on in the U.S. is it okay to drop bombs on us?  Isn’t dropping bombs on another country an act of war, or something like that?  We were incredibly pissed when the Empire of Japan dropped bombs on us. The French were pissed too when Germany dropped bombs on them.

‘Might makes right’ seems like our foreign policy.  Other countries just sit it out and watch the U.S. on their TV’s, dropping bombs.

1) Russian SAM technology blows ass.

2) There are no Russian SAM batteries in Syria and Putin was all talk.

West´s  short-sighted meddling is the number one source of extremism. Without it you did not have al- Qaeda or ISIS. You do not have to share their goals to understand, why they came about. The foreign policy grossly underestimates nationalistic sentiments over the rest and therefore US engagement to war on foreign soil creates systematically new trouble spots before existing ones are extinguished. Add to this the idea propagated by Bloomberg that the global financial stability requires now suppression sovereign democratic rights in the West and you realize the knife´s edge, which the world now finds itself on. The Commander in Chief should just stick to the golf, because the foreign policy is definitely not his domain.

The US strategy is clear. Bomb and destroy the Syrian government forces under the pretext of acting against IS. What is not clear is what Syria's reaction will be. Since the US operation is likely to be restricted to missiles and drones, there is not much damage Syria can cause that has not already been anticipated and treated as acceptable.

Wonder if Syria has the resources to launch a few missiles against some Western cities. It will be a pity if the Syrian regime falls without taking at least a couple of Western cities.

ANSWER:

Overcommittment to the Ukraine.

This is what strategy is.   When you create a demand for forces HERE, they cannot simultaneously be THERE.  Russia's air power is constructed such that it supports ground forces, and can establish local air superiority.  But it doesn't have a great expeditionary capability.

Russia's strength is in its Army.  Which is ironic.  Its planes are of much better quality relative to other country's than are its last few generations of ground-based armaments.

Regardless, stoking fires in Russias interests around the globe moves the contest for gas delivery pipelines to Europe into the Air Force and Navy, where the US and Europe have a decicive advantage.

But ask yourself this... What if Russia competed in Gas wars the way a private company would?  What if instead of spending huge sums on armaments, and proxy wars to prevent alternative pipelines, they instead spent it updating GAZPROM and making it an efficient company that could compete on price given equal conditions?

In other words, why is the killing over gas supply contracts necessary in the first place?

Clausewitz said that war is the extension of politics by other means.

But the most important thing to remember is that force, coercion, is NEVER the most efficient means of solving a problem.  Even when it seems to be, blowback over the short or long term will ALWAYS leach the efficiency away.

But thieves, thugs, and governments are always incapable of seeing this fact.
