Schrodinger's Confidence: US Consumers Both More And Less Confident At The Same Time

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite Gallup's poll showing consumer confidence going nowhere this year, and Bloomberg's consumer comfort level for high-income earners collapsing, the government's UMich Consumer Sentiment measure has soared to its highest since last July's exuberance (at 84.6). Take your pick which data you trust...

UMich beats and surges to 15-month highs...

totally ignoring other data...

I'm confident the numbers are fiction.  I am also confident that 80% of college freshmen don't know the definition of fiction.

Yep,  It's just like counting electrons

And there they are!

So of course there's no confidence.  Until you start measuring it.

It's a quantum universe.

Which makes me moar certain Obozo really is made of bozons after all.

Consumer confidence is linked to when the people you polled took their anti-depressant.  Two hours after the pillheads took Xanax, confidence is super, everything is wonderful.  Just before they took their next dose of happy pills, their confidence is in the dumps.  Timing is everything.

I choose candidate three.......none of the above. I trust neither since both are products of the bullshit factory.

I for one always believe anything the govt says.  They have proven time and time again just how honest and clean they are, and are worth every penny they politely ask of us.

it's very simple.  if you can afford it, you are very confident in purchasing that Van Gogh, but if you've been out of a job for 2 years, lost your home and have your family scattered to the wind as a result, that confidence level tends to be inverted.

Well, I, for one, am confident.  I am confident that our government is a lawless cabal that will continue to work only for special interests (only special interests that can pay very well), including the international bankers that own and control the nations 'money'.  I am also confident that Ephesians 6:12 is correct.

"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."

The evil was thrown out of heaven, and it landed in our governments.

No, self govern is best.  Now we need roads and bridges, and some trustees can do those things, but my rights, my property are just that, mine.

This is a working example of what happens to the masses when the sinister, influencial financial media peeps get in cahoots with analysts and economists who intentionally obfuscate the hell out everything. Now everyone is clueless not knowing right from left, up from down or good from bad. Fucked up i tell you.

Jeeze!  For the first time I can remember in +3 decades of paying freaking attention all that CONfidence is being expressed with negative sales growth in the retail sectors of just about everything.  I work with several companies in the Food Processing/Restaurant sector and am seeing nothing but negative to static sales,  huge margin compression, more emphasis on part time at all levels, layoffs, job eliminations, and folks that are just plain WORN OUT!  Like so many of the indicators this one is obviously compromised with lies and obfuscation.  THe only indicator I see as bullish would be bullshit and lies and DESPERATION.  There is not enough alcohol, weed, prozac, etc.  to continue the Potemkin Village mirage.

I'm confident that we are living in the most manipulated markets of all time. If the Chinese (their oligarchy) have any sence they will print and print and buy all the gold on the planet. Just think of all the paper that has been printed since 1980. The worlds fiat supply has probably increased 50 fold and gold is trading $1200 at some point the fiat escapes and inflation, (the government numbers) goes through the roof or fiat collapses and gold is king again.

The law of diminishing returns. Before we headed off to MB, Mrs. Atomizer went out to Tanger mall to buy a few dresses. 50-70% markdown. After being worn down going from store to store she finally makes her purchases at Polo. The theme I recognized was every metrosexual sales person seemed to be sexually frustrated with there job.

Headed over to a sunglasses store, wanted to see what maui jim had for latest styles. All overpriced plastic injection molded garbage. My pair are about 7 years old. MJ-114-25 (Shoreline), durable as fuck and has anodized metal. Sure they cost a arm and leg, but I got my monies worth purchasing them.

Off to the beach..enjoy your day!

Article should have been entitled "Schroedinger's Sheep". As per Wikipedia:

Schrödinger's sheep: sheep, unstable markets, and potential black swans are placed in the economy. If the market detects a black swan (i.e. a single, devastating yet unforseen event), the market crashes, releasing economic devestation that kills the sheep. The Keynsian interpretation of market forces implies that by next quarter, the sheep are simultaneously alive and dead. Yet, when one checks next quarter, one sees the sheep either alive or dead, not both alive and dead. This poses the question of if a black swan will arrive before next quarter and reality collapses into one possibility or the other.
