Caught On Tape: Uber X's Latest Driver, Deadmau5 Taking Fares In His $300,000 Mclaren 650S
While Uber faces lawsuits and blockades around the world, it appears Toronto just took the Taxi 2.0 experience to a whole new level. Deadmau5, the famous Canadian DJ, is the latest to become an Uber X driver, and as Jalopnik shows below, he turns up in his brand new Mclaren 650S to pick up a few fares...
in toronto? need a lift? I'm working for @uber tonight, downtown toronto. get lucky.

Nice marketing stunt. Although I doubt the old timers on here know who deadmau5 is.
That stunt works both ways.
Deadmau5 is also in a lawsuit going against Disney cause he tried to patient his mouse head and they filed against it saying people would confuse it for 'Mickey Mouse'
All seems kinda douche to me. I want a full bar and don't want to sit by a driver (especially a cheesy disc jockey) if I hire a car.
Hes a DJ sure, but his productions are phenomenal. I tihnk i just dated myself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSANu-oAHHQ
I just friendzoned myself.
By the way, he's pronounced "DEAD MOUSE".
Fuck him, no matter how hard he tries, whenever I see his name I read "Dead mow five".
-Chumblez.
First thing I thought was Dead Mao 5. Next thing I know, I was listening to his music waiting for him to make a video of some battle that kills Chairman Mao. The video never came.
Can he pick up the city's trash for free?
dupe*
Take it from grampa, who usually listens to good German music (i.e., J. S. Bach).
Deadmau5 is the Mozart of EDM.
The Meowingtons Hax DVD is a joy. Have watched it many times.
Chumba - you're off your rocker.
@TXH :
you call this music ..?
go try satie, mozart, beethoven, wagner....
you should experience something.
Sure, those are awesome composers. To really experience something try Thelonious Monk. Not for everyone I admit.
There's a Deadmau5 reference in Blizzard's Diablo 3. It's a barbarian amulet in the shape of the DJ's mouse logo. When you activate Wrath of the Berzerker, it causes all enemies nearby to repeatedly jump in the air. The name of the ammy is "Raise your Weapon."
At least that's what I heard... uhh... from some geek I know...
Dated yourself a queer?
You go for the Little Richard stuff I guess?
Assfire?
Why's your ass on fire?
Too much of the ol' in and out?
His is probably a reference to something habanero.
But you were projecting anyway.
Dated yourself as a 16 year old with no knowledge of contemporary music?
His productions are crap.
Compared to who exactly? Tiesto? You can't be serious...
No, not compared with Tiesto.... Compared with the majority of the thousands of electronic music records and albums that were released in the 90s alone. I bet you had no clue that there were that many.
Indeed there were thousands. 99.9 % junk, just as in any other music genre.
I've heard lots of EDM.
Deadmau5's "Right This Second" and "Strobe" make for some fine music.
Maybe you just can't hear it.
But Wolfgang and Johann would be delighted.
If you like EDM, see Rafa Barrios, Moudaber and Kaiserdisco.
Mint as fuck.
i dig kaiserdisco, but Crookers, Switch, and the fidget house genre has worked pretty well to get the girls bootie shaking around here, experience tells me.

that being said, of the derivative EDM subgenres Wait What is partial to, the Claptones of the world work best.

Listened to "Right This Second" and it was boring, soulless crap. Thinking deadmau5 is good in the electronic world is akin to thinking Justin Beiber or Lady Gaga are good in the Pop world or that Eminem is the best rapper. You haven't skimmed the surface of music; you've practically stopped on the first producer you heard on the radio and decided that he was good based on popular opinion and zero effort on your part. That's fine, there's nothing wrong with it and the majority of people will be in agreement with you. It's only if you want to be better than the majority of dumdasses in the world that you should aspire to go beyond.

Hey now, no need to start a sub war.
No fiddle? No thanks!

Seriously though, who buys a car like that? If he does not have the skills to push it to its limits (not likely) then its just a big fat "I am a douche" sign.
And WTF is uber? I finally had to google it since no one else said anything about it. Right, a mobile phone app company that is going to change the world.
Is it 1999 again?
Regards,
Cooter
He bought the car BECAUSE HE CAN. it's not like he financed it.
That was a great tune you linked, but I have to say that close-minded derision is very unbecoming. Good music is good music. Period.
Looking for quality production work in electronic scene? Check out Koven.
Zoomorph
I've heard a tune or two.
I have recordings of pretty much all of the work Bach and Mozart. Perhaps a dozen recordings of the Req in D minor, many recordings of WTC Book I, etc., etc.
I might know most of Mozart's PCs better than you Three Blind Mice and Row Row Your Boat.
Of "Right This Second". one might say that the minimal works of Philip Glass are boring, too. But I wouldn't.
Andy Blueman is one of the few guys (that I know) who deserves to be compared to classical composers. Deadmau5 is not bad music, but overrated IMO.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4ANBQsmS1s (skip to 3 min)
This is musical perfection to me. The only sad part is the number of views.
Miles Davis, "Solea" on "Sketches of Spain"
A base-heavy rip-off of Jean Michael Jarre.
That middle bit of Reconceal is very nice. Reminded me of 'Raconte Moi une Histoire' by M83. :)
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_3ozEsN2UO8
Uplifting trance is crap, all of it.
It's easy to understand why one might think that, but there actually is some that is pretty good. Comes to mind about five or seven minutes of the stuff on the Oblivion soundtrack by M83 (coincidentally mentioned in the comment just before yours), and, most famously, a pretty good-sized body of work by Hans Zimmer (i.e., the soundtrack for The Last Samurai, of which perhaps 30-40% is very, very good, and there are several moments in there that are about as good as any I've heard from any composer, classical or contemporary).
But good luck trying to sort out the wheat from the chaff. Encouraged by the hour or two of Hans Zimmer's work that will survive the test of time, I tried to find more in the genre, only to give up.
Very strong argument I must say :)
No way, if Bach were alive today he would be writing metal.

His productions suck, always have. I never understood the people swinging from his balls, especially after his infamous interview in Resident Advisor (which a friend of mine was the one that did the interview, and he had sent me the full interview which was way worse than what was printed). DeadMau5 is the douche king. Production wise in progressive house, James Holden is the man. www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5zzS40-xbo
Yeah I'd have to agree. Nobody over forty gives a fuck about DJs. I sure don't.
A disc jockey? As in records? What century am I living in?
Replace Deadmau5 with Tony Bennett. Does it make a difference to the point of story?
The guy is helping circumvent the Bureaucracy that is the Taxi business mated with the nanny state.
I gottta give him credit even though he looks like a doooosh
way past 4o - i like anyting thats good (and mau5 is good)

Regular dance music is nice and all, but very few people can create transcendental sounds that elevate your consciousness with pure majesty. You have to wield real instruments to get there. ;-)
Blut Aus Nord - The Meditant
Elitist bullshit. Deadmau5's instruments are no less "real" than Dylan's acoustic guitar. And the soundscapes he can create are so much more transcendental than anything an acoustic instrument can create. A guitar no matter how tuned still sounds like a guitar. Electronic music is infinitely varied. that said I love Deadmau5 and all the other electronic composers as well as my Metal, Hip-Hop, etc.
So stop being a music snob, it makes you look juvenile ;-)
Deadmau5 is good. He's made some pretty decent tracks.
But I much prefer listening to the godfather and the robots.

Moroder's "I Feel Love" dance track with Donna Summer is probably the greatest EDM record of all time.
New Order's Blue Monday is probably #2.
Anyone who knows about creating EDM tracks is still amazed today at both of those tracks which were done long before computers and DAWs.
No Shrillex fans here? LOL!
The greatest EDM record was from the 70s? Are you saying that electronic music hasn't progressed in the last 40 years?
Not what he's saying, exactly, but at the same time, has there ever been a better pop band then the Beatles? Has anyone ever topped Led Zeppelin?
Nope. Timeless classics are timeless classics for a reason.
+10 on Led Zep
I challenge anyone not to start twitching when the medley kicks in on this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skNeD4Sv798
You all know the song, but have you heard the definitive version on the HTWWW album? Try it.
The best rock & roll/blues track I have ever heard.
i really like the live versions of whole lotta love. with each rendition, it seems they really go into some old-time riffage during the middle 'interlude'. the version off of song remains the same is classic.
I'm not an expert on pop or rock so I don't know who the best was, but I get your point: after an early creative period in a style of music, there's a long period of people trying to copy or immitate the originals and most of them fail to.
In this case, maybe he should've said that the 70s were the peak of disco music. Electronic music continued to evolve through many styles. The 1990s were the golden age of a lot of styles like techno and trance. In 2000, VSTs were invented and the market started being flooded by vastly shitty electronic music made by kids on fruity loops, like deadmau5. (There's still good stuff, but it's harder to find.)
no, it hasnt much.
70' electro man, this was old way full analog, delays was on tape... decayed playback, you kid today do not know what analog is. electro is ice cold sound.
go listen some brian eno, even J.M.jarre... force your ears to listen to the background noise, the magic dust on the signal, this is a part of sound electro cannot make.
numeric only bring saccading, dithering & mangling. you should try to make a full electro album without any mastering analog unit... lol, you can't.
fuck digitals.
nihilist you are a dickhead. go learn basis of audio synthesis, you deserve it it will remove most of shit you have in your brain
Currently building a 16 track analog studio to record a few albumns worth of material we have written. Have the 16 track reel to reel, the board and various outboard gear. Had to get the heads fixed and luckily there are still 2 companies out there who do it. I was surprised to say the least. Something about analog recording that digital will NEVER be able to touch no matter how far the bit depth goes or the sampling rate. Sine wave > than square??? I am not sure what it is but there is a element there that just is lost with digital.
Have digital recording gear as well, but want to do these recordings the right way.
Yeah, everyone loves listening to the 60hz hum of some dipshit's unshielded power cables because he thinks music is all about what equipment you make it with.
Hey man filters are hard when you have to solder them together first.
bizarre love triangle, perfect kiss, and true faith are probably my favorites from new order. it's great how they combined real-time playing with programmed lines. that drummer is tight. the loose vocals over the entire backing music is actually a big plus. i'm not a skrillex fan exactly, but am a big fan of the 'wub wub wobble' bass. ... one of the greatest things ever. ymmv
This is what got me into dance music
www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhhFhUY1FAU
That was incredible. Thanks.
Nihilist.
You're absolutely fucking right.
These critics don't have brains wired for EDM.
Maybe these critics like the Grateful Dead (yuck) or Chopin (double yuck).
One should be very careful about putting artists down.
I happen to loathe Chopin, but I would be hesitant to say that his music was shit.
You have to be a Vivaldi fan though right?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3iOg-ZgtFM
good lord, who can hate Chopin, who made such wonderful Polonaises?
he must have raped your great-great-great grandmother or something. i would see no other reason for the hate.
agreed; synthesis opens an entire new palette of sounds.
Synthesizers are real instruments and they can certainly create transcendental sounds when placed in the right hands (all popular producers, like deadmau5, are making garbage). In fact, synthesizers are theoretically unlimited and take your consciousness to places that traditional instruments cannot. Turn up the volume and close your eyes. ;-)
Here are a few examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY5D4DHacLs (1996 - ambient)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_DEpf03R5c (2009 - downtempo)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onquKz5SYRs (1994 - psychedelic trance)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecxDllctICs (1993 - trance)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWCSzkUIVUM (1984 - video game music)
Most listeners are not looking for transcendental sounds or experiences of consciousness, otherwise Lady Gaga, Deadmau5, and rest wouldn't be so popular.
Nice...

"Nobody over forty gives a fuck about DJs."
1. You are wrong. Whwether I am over/under 40 aside: good vibes and grooves are good vibes and grooves no matter how they are produced and delivered or who by..
2. The mind need not mirror the decreptitude of the body.
3. Get outta my cab.
I'm almost 40, and I kinda give a fuck too.
Started listening to EDM in the mid-nineties. I still have Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure: Expeditions 2-cd set in the sunvisor CD-holder in my vehicle. The "Belfunk" and "Know you love me too" tracks still send chills down my spine.
57, listen to deadmau5, plus others. Bite me.
oh yeah?
well, on one under 40 knows who buckaroo banzai is, so there!
More's the pity.
Perhaps. But he has a point.
i'm gonna bet 98% don't know who he is or that he exemplifies what a DJ is: he got famous mashing up Jay-Z and the Beatles. he plays other people's songs for a living, and ironically gets paid millions to do it around the world. useless... decadence 101.
"what dj's do these days" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nh9C7nQHmII
if you want to know how it feels to drive a Mclaren, you can rent one for the weekend in Vegas. hint: might as well be driving a hyundai w/ a super-premium interior package unless you're on the track or an open stretch of Hwy 93.
how much you think he has invested in Uber shares?
Welcome to the "New Normal". Mind you the adulation of "Disk Jockeys" goes right back to the Radio 1 era (with such "Hoousehold Names" as Tony Blackburn, Jimmy Saville (yes, that one), and the crazy but excellent Kenny Everett).
Nowadays we have "musicians" who cannot play any instrument, and "DJ" s whose claim to fame is brutalising existing music, but who seem to be VERY good at "making money".
An interesting reflection on "Modern Values".
wasnt' jimmy saville a pedophile? tells you everything you need to know right there.
As in US 93? Decent road. Few cars and very few NHP. Low speed limit between Ely and McGill, got pulled over once there, no ticket though. AZ Highway Patrol like the stretch between Nevada and Kingman, lots of people caught there.
So basically you are calling him a douche in a very douchebag sort of way.
Sometimes he uses fancy modular synths to play music written by other people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTFpMYhRbkQ
I doubt the old timers on here know who deadmau5 is.
or care...
i could listen to deadmau5 all day long, my main pandora station at work is mostly his stuff & similar.
his songs feature house roots, four-on-the-floor beats, rock influences, beats made for dancing and unsyncopated ensemble rhythms.
h8rs gonna h8, sux to be them!
Some tattooed freak I never heard of. Why do all these guys look like they're dying of AIDS?
Coke.
coke is so 80's. it's molly that's got them looking like that.
Don't know, and don't care.
He's a fucking DJ for cryin' out loud.
What's the story behind Uber?
Is it the next attack on individual wealth in favor of a multinational corporation? A war on SMB companies in favor of big corp? Yet another globalist Weapon of mass destruction for local SMB?
Big finance finding new ways to root out small enterprises in favor of a monopolist company that kills another profession by enslaving the formal individual small firms and self-employed taxi-drivers?
The same road as the hotelbooking sites that charge huge % commission? http://www.guestcentric.com/booking-com-your-worst-best-friend/
Trough their marketing power these big corporations get the power to decide who lives and who dies.. Who will go bankrupt and who will prosper.
As usual the sheeple cheer for this next step in the process of global control and ultimate enslavement. Of course on first glance it looks beneficial for the consumer, but in the long run it could turn out to be a curse.. Another way of generating income globalized and put into centralised control..
What do ZH'ers think about this? Am I being paranoid?
On the one hand, TNCs (transportation network companies) like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar are directly threatening the horrible creature otherwise known as the publicly-regulated/privately-run taxicab cartel, what with its mind-boggling feudal medallion system, rickety salvage-title cars, and rude drivers that probably don't speak English.
On the other hand, TNCs only work at the moment because drivers are the ones that take all the risk and assume the liability. They get the wear and tear on their cars, they pay for the fuel, they get the drunks that vomit on the seats, and they are the ones that will be hauled into court when they are sued for discriminating against passengers and causing accidents (including fatal ones).
And if you think the liability insurance coverage that these companies provide is designed to protect the driver, and not the company, I have a bridge to sell you.
Though exact figures are hard to come by, TNCs are taking a portion of their startup VC cash to subsidize the cost of the ride. This is the only way that they can provide rates lower than a traditional cab, while still paying the drivers a reasonable cut (and one which is getting smaller all the time as they introduce commissions and other such business practices). Even now the TNCs are cannibalizing each other and themselves in a race to the bottom to gain "mindshare" in place of actual revenue or profit. My guess is that these companies are all looking to get bought out/perform an IPO, at which point the insiders will cash out big time and the muppets get slaughtered.
Cue the iconic ZH Kermit the Frog graphic here.
Once this consolidation/maturation happens, both the service level and pricing at a TNC will be no better than a traditional cab.
True, but the difference is that it will be one or two companies central controlling the global taxi market.
Another branch controlled by few in a globallist way..
Yup. I had to google deadmau5 AND uber, jut to undertand the headline. Old and in the country. NOT with it. Nope. Not AT ALL...
Fuck... I don't even have a CELL PHONE!
Nice to see he has been able to find a real job....

I have used Uber many times and I greatly enjoy their service over any cab. This is a great marketing tool and I applaud the innovation of promoting local business.
Terrorist.
if information 'sharing' technology needs to make 5000000x return an dgo public at skyrocketing valuations in order to make it work because financialization has compeltely infested 'technology ' innovation as a business model
in addition to the unions and stakeholder protectionists that will ALWAYS BLOCK PROGRESS RATHER THAN ADOPTING IT THEMSELVES-----
then we are truly heading towards a dark age .
because what happens when the easy money heads back into conventional protectionism?
a ny taxi medallion will cost so much that one mega corporation will simply buy all of nyc's medallions on credit and then lobby the city to ban car ownership, and raise subway fares----and then raise cab fares while they lower the pay for cab drivers.
It's fun to see these guys enjoying themselves. They must be 1% er's?
I had a couple of beers and some appetizers for a group of (3) earlier. The bill was $60.00 not including tip.
We spent 1.5 hours dining, and had beer(not wine-spirits) with our appetizers.
Define "a couple".
Couple = (2) Several =(3)
I consumed (1.5)
Some people will do just about anything to write off their expensive car on their taxes.
I have no idea what is going on here or what this article is about!!! I must be getting old if I don't know what an uber is.
Don't feel bad either did I until I researched it. Great concept and marketing technique. I might even try it myself someday just for shits & giggles.
its a taxi but private cars.
You download the app and give them your card.
Punch in where you want to go and car will accept you and its charged to your credit card.
if you live in a city you no longer need a car.
In San Francisco it costs you about $1000 per month to have a car with parking.
Uber, don't use it pay nothing.
Thank you for the reply luckystars, sounds like a good idea in the city. Usually I look things up but tonight I'm in the middle of 3 midnight 12 hour shifts and saw this post and was thinking to myself "wtf? I just give up".
You are welcome honey.
My son drives Uber.
No low end jobs will work with school schedules
He signs in and drives, signs out and goes to school at UC Berkeley.
It allows him to move on up, its a great thing for students and people who
can't find work that pays well.
I'm with ya. An Uber or a Dead Mouse thingy. Oh well, it's at least entrepreneurial and attempting to again STARVE THE BEAST (both it would appear).
And that's a good thing....
I love Uber.
The San Fran commies hate it, because they don't control it.
The whole Taxi thing is run by the city, and there is a whole drama around the Taxi commissioner.
Yes, people don't know/realize how regulated the taxi industry is. Regs up the ying yang in Seattle, out of touch politically correct city apparatchiks gone mad...i.e. testing drivers for English proficiency administered by immigrants to native English speakers. Not to mention the insurance companies grabbing a lion's share of the cash flow. Another story.
Never imagined seeing Deadmau5 mentioned on ZH. He's one of my favorites, an amazing DJ, IMO. He has a thing for combining ridiculous cars with interviews and such, so this is no surprise.
Hmmmmm, getting pretty high on the insignificance meter. Does this mean the Financial crash is near?
I fucking hope so.
I don't have a problem with the concept of Uber, but have a big problem with valuing a company with no assets that uses other people's property and doesn't necessarily carry the proper insurance coverage over $5 billion.
The way most insurance plans are written using a car for business negates the policy. If you tell an agent your car will be used for business, even for one day, they will tell you the car can't be insured. Sure you can just lie, but with Uber you have a big problem if you get in an accident while carrying a fare. Uber supposedly covers you, but how? What kind of policy do they have that covers individual drivers all over the world all driving different cars without commercial licenses. It would be like me starting a freight company allowing people to deliver dangerous cargo in minivans. Put that liquid nitrogen next to the car seat.
Considering the driver carries all the risk, they should receive 99% of the money. Uber just lets a driver match themselves to fares using a cell phone. Not exactly something that should be worth billions.
Uber like everything else today is nothing but a scam to utilize the Wall Street mechanism to enrich a few people for essentially doing less than a few hours of work.
The whole concept is far less abhorrent than the whole idea that taxi-cab licenses should be 'valued' at huge amounts, and somehow limited artificially through government fiat. Sure, license taxi-cabs for the purposes of road and personnel safety, but the government has no right to concoct a scheme to conspire with licensees to limit the number of taxis on the road.
Thats a Wall Street thing.
the worst is Yelp that is basically a extortion racket.
I was the first to say I was going to sue them.
They wanted $200 a month from me to keep bad reviews away.
No good reviews can come to my business, only the bad because I refused
to pay them.
Wall St is a joke, every business that pays them hates them. It is not
a sustainable business.
Uber is a viable business. Cabs don't come when you call them, they find a better fare and
leave you waiting. Uber can't pick and choose, they will take you into neighborhoods that cabs won't.
If you are at your friends house and call a cab, nobody comes.
Uber does.
Uber came from Cabs having a monopoly and leave you standing and waving.
So you have a problem with people who voluntarily exchange goods/services (uber), each feeling they are better off? Did you know that many limo services are unregulated and may or may not have commercial insurance? Are you sure that all taxi drivers DO have commercial insurance? Of course it is the fault of government regulation that created the need for uber in the first place, but, by your post, you appear to be the type that believes that same government can solve this problem.
If it is so easy to do what uber does why don't you, or uber drivers, do it? I think your post tells us a lot about you, which you could learn more about reading this:
http://www.amazon.com/ENVY-A-Theory-Social-Behaviour/dp/0865970645
agreed that we need to unregulate.
I think what he is saying is that Uber makes an obscene amount of profit for doing very little. The risk carrier should be the one who is compensated the most, not the fixer in the middle.
One question ? Does this article/video instill more or less confidence in the UBER ride sharing platform?
I'd say it's NIL.
It might actually hurt UBER, because it projects UBER, as untouchable and out of reach for the ordinary person.
Bullshit.
This is an advertisement for them. Its cool.
To drive Uber you must have a car with On-star, 2005 or later
It must have 4 doors.
UBER lowered its prices, if you have 4 persons it's cheaper than the bus in SF.
All this anti UBER propaganda. They want the old rude crazy Taxi drivers back.
I almost get hit by them everyday driving home, they are not American, they don't know
how to drive and they are aggressive.
horrid combo
Anally retentive
So next thing "folks" will appreciate is getting an ûber from Jamie Dimon in his chauffeur driven bullet proof Marbach
1% is 1%, regardless
Someone ping me when Maru picks up an Uber fare and the video is "leaked" on the public
I'm sure he does this on a regular basis. Kill three birds with one stone: "help people out" with Uber, charge even the good looking women a fee, then take them home. They pay you to have sex.
Some things that Americans do not have any sense.
Buy an expensive car to walk in the rain, thing that makes any Fiat Uno.
Living in a house of 5000 meters of built area with ten bedrooms, fifteen bathrooms that cost a barbarity to keep clean, pay taxes.
You only have one ass if you're not a colostomy bag.
You just have to put a body on the bed.
You can not drive two cars at once.
Praque have so much excess?
Woman is difficult to keep more than two in bed.
Financially support two women is the final straw, the guy goes bankrupt.
Spartan life is better.
