"Moderate" Syrian Rebels Sign Non-Aggression Pact With ISIS; Iraq Defies US

Tyler Durden's picture

First it was the 'broad coalition' that appeared a little narrower than President Obama explained to the world last week. Today, 2 more crucial aspects of the 'strategy' appear to be faltering. Despite the promise of $500 million to train "moderate" Syrian terrorist/rebels to fight ISIS, GlobalPost reports Syrian rebels and jihadists from the Islamic State have agreed a non-aggression pact for the first time. Under the deal, "the two parties will respect a truce until a final solution is found and they promise not to attack each other because they consider the principal enemy to be the Nussayri regime." Not exactly what Obama and Kerry had in mind. But it is John Kerry's trip to Iraq that appears to have had blowback already as Reuters reports the newly installed US-friendly PM al-Adadi ordered his air force to halt strikes on civilian areas, "even in those towns controlled by ISIS," just a day after Kerry's visit (which left Turkey explaining how it would not support US airstrikes either). So far, so good?!

So, to sum up...

First, Germany and UK (and Australia) - the USA' broad coalition of allies to strike ISIS - will not support airstrikes on ISIS in Syria.

As The WSJ reports,

Germany and the U.K. on Thursday ruled out carrying out air strikes on Islamic State militants in Syria, a day after President Barack Obama authorized the start of U.S. air strikes there.

"We haven't been asked, nor will we do it," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told reporters when asked about German participation in air strikes against the Islamic State, known as ISIL or ISIS, in light of Mr. Obama's speech.

"We need to be honest with ourselves in the current situation, we don't yet have a final, blanket strategy which guarantees that we'll be successful against ISIS and similar groups," the German minister said in Berlin.

His U.K. counterpart Philip Hammond explicitly ruled out air strikes in Syria, after the U.K. parliament struck down such a move last year.

*  *  *

Second, Turkey - the USA's closest ally in NATO among the Middle East - denies them its airbases for use as launch sites of airstrikes and will not support airstrikes in Syria (after John Kerry visits)

As AFP reports,

US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in Ankara Friday for talks aimed at building a coalition against Islamic State jihadists, a visit that comes after Turkey said it would not allow its air bases to be used for strikes on the extremists.

The top US diplomat, touring the Middle East to establish a coalition of more than 40 countries, is to meet with Turkey's leaders including President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for talks on measures to defeat the militants in Iraq and Syria.

Turkey, a NATO member and Washington's key ally in the region, is reluctant to take part in combat operations against Islamic State militants, or allow a US-led coalition to attack jihadists from its territory.

On the eve of the visit, a Turkish official told AFP: "Our hands and arms are tied because of the hostages."

The official added that Turkey will "not be involved in any armed operation but will entirely concentrate on humanitarian operations."

IS militants hold 49 Turks hostage, including diplomats and children, abducted from the Turkish consulate in Mosul in Iraq in June.

Turkey is the only Muslim country in a coalition of 10 countries who agreed to fight ISIS at the NATO summit in Newport.

Turkey can open Incirlik Air Base in the south for logistical and humanitarian operations in any U.S.-led operation, according to the official who stressed that the base would not be used for lethal air strikes.

“Turkey will not take part in any combat mission, nor supply weapons,” he said.

*  *  *

Third, Iraq's newly-installed US-friendly PM al-Abadi defies the US and halts airstrikes on ISIS-held civilian areas (leaving it up to the US to be the bad guys against his people once again), and

As Reuters reports,
Iraq's Shi'ite Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Saturday that he had ordered his air force to halt strikes on civilian areas.

"I have ordered the Iraqi Air Force to halt shelling of civilian areas even in those towns controlled by ISIS," Abadi said on his official Twitter account, using the former name for militant group Islamic State.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has been touring the Middle East to coordinate a response to Islamic State's growing power in eastern Syria and western Iraq.

Abadi said his order to protect civilians had been issued on Thursday, a day after he held talks with Kerry in Baghdad.

*  *  *

Finally, The USA's proxy boots-on-the-ground - Syria's "moderate" rebels - have signed a non-aggression truce with ISIS.

As Global Post reports,

Syrian rebels and jihadists from the Islamic State have agreed a non-aggression pact for the first time in a suburb of the capital Damascus, a monitoring group said on Friday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the ceasefire deal was agreed between IS and moderate and Islamist rebels in Hajar al-Aswad, south of the capital.

Under the deal, "the two parties will respect a truce until a final solution is found and they promise not to attack each other because they consider the principal enemy to be the Nussayri regime."

But apart from that, everything is going great...

*  *  *

We're gonna need a new strategy.

My head is spinning.

So this sounds like ISIS is now back on the bandwagon with the other Syrian rebels again. Are the terms such that they lend cups of suger to each other? Stinger missiles? Poison gas?

In the meantime none of these balless civil rights pandering regional countries at risk... including Iraq... wants to carpet bomb innocent civilian populations to nail a jihadil terrorist.

Where is Israel when you need them...

UK PM Cameron was all fire and brimstone for more violence in the ME. Then the polls shifted towards Scots supporting their own independence and Cameron quieted down despite Obama's speech.

Expect Cameron's fire and brimstone tone supporting UK involvement in further ME war when and if the Scots vote to reject their opportunity for their own independence.

i think obama knows what he is doing, it is evil, but you know these are not all mistakes. he says he wants the "good"rebels not isis in power, but that might just be the lie they tell to us, the great unwashed. they want ISIS to stick around, they are useful.....remember the last thing washington and wall street want in the middle east is peace and stability. that would wreck all of their plans. they would lose control then. its empire politics.....ugly barbaric stuff.

That's way too difficult. Here's a more realistic vetting form:

I request:

1) Getting American weapons, as I am a moderate Syrian rebel

2) Getting American weapons, as I am in ISIS but no evidence exists for my association to them

3) Getting American weapons, as I am a member of the Assad regime

Office use only: send weapons to applicants circling options 1 or 2 above.

...using the civilian population as human shields.

...posing as Muslims doing things that Islam forbids, and then snickering about it.

So, I pose a  question:

If "moderate" Sunni rebels AND batshit crazy ISIS are opposed to both the Shiite Hezbollah/Iran AND the Sunni Muslim Brotherhood/Hamas, then what  non-Mossad, Islamic political organization do they support?

That's right, I'm drawing a blank too. Unless it would be the Wahabist Saudis, but remembr I said NON-MOSSAD. Wahabs are to islam what Mormons are to Christianity.

Conclusion: Syrian rebels- all controlled by Mossad.

"I love it when a plan comes together." does not apply in this case.
After all, we are not at war, with or without a bunch of Islamic or non-Islamic killers or maybe terrorists but we in any case cannot call them that and we're not gonna put any troops on the ground except the ones we do without calling them troops in the no-war we're not fighting, so why wouldn't we expect nobody to not join us in this no strategy, no goals, no objectives, non war, maybe conflict, wherein nobody even knows anymore whose enemy is the enemy of whoever it might be that is or is not, my friends, if I have any left.

I do not agree with this. However, the degree of military force required would be total war bomb them to rubble, bibilical proposrtions sort of thing. It can be done, but is there the will or the need to actually do it?

Syria is the battle ground for a lot of diverse interests playing themselves out. ISIS, I think, as barborous as they are, is simply a tool of some of these interests. I guess it could take a life of its own, but I rather think when it is no longer needed it will dissolve away. Time will tell.

The U.S. military has more important things to do than deal with former Arab mercenaries on the C.I.A payroll who kidnap and behead American civilians if no ransom is paid.  Such as state-wide hacking of computers in the USA on the hunt for kiddie porn.

---

The real NCIS in action, running illegal searches of every civilian computer in a state with no search warrant and no evidence of a crime.  Hacking into computers with impunity with the blessing of the Obama administration.  Criminal behavior sanctioned by a corrupt Justice Department headed by Eric Holder. ----   Navy Guilty of Illegally Broad Online Searches

By TIM HULL

http://www.courthousenews.com/2014/09/12/71363.htm

(CN) - Navy investigators regularly run illegally broad online surveillance operations that breach the line against military enforcement of civilian law, a divided 9th Circuit ruled Friday.
One such operation carried out in 2010 by NCIS agent Steve Logan eventually netted Seattle-area resident Michael Dreyer for distributing child pornography.
Using software called RoundUp from his office in
Georgia, Logan searched for "any computers located in Washington state sharing known child pornography on the Gnutella file-sharing network," the ruling states.

Logan wrote in a subpoena that he chose Washington because of its large "saturation" of Department of Defense and Navy personnel.
The search hit on at least one computer, which, with the help of an FBI subpoena to Comcast, he discovered was linked to Dreyer's address.
Logan's check on Dreyer revealed that while he used to be in the Air Force, he was no longer affiliated with the military.
Nonetheless, NCIS turned its information over to local police, who searched Dreyer's home and found "many videos and images of child pornography," according to the ruling.
Dreyer was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison, despite his claim that the evidence against him should have been suppressed as a clear violation of the Posse Comitatus Act (PCA), which generally prohibits the military from getting involved in civilian law enforcement.
A divided appellate panel agreed on Friday, reversing the lower court's dismissal of his motion to suppress the evidence and sending the case back to
Seattle.
The 2-1 majority rejected the government's argument that the military is allowed to monitor and search all computers in a state without prior knowledge that a computer's owner is even in the military.
"To accept that position would mean that NCIS agents could, for example, routinely stop suspected drunk drivers in downtown Seattle on the off-chance that a driver is a member of the military, and then turn over all information collected about civilians to the Seattle Police Department for prosecution," wrote Judge Marsha Berzon for the majority.
The panel also warned that the present case suggests that
Logan's broad search was not an isolated incident.
"So far as we can tell from the record, it has become a routine practice for the Navy to conduct surveillance of all the civilian computers in an entire state to see whether any child pornography can be found on them, and then to turn over the information to civilian law enforcement when no military connection exists," the ruling states.
"We have here abundant evidence that the violation at issue has occurred repeatedly and frequently, and that the government believes that its conduct is permissible, despite prior cautions by our court and others that military personnel, including NCIS agents, may not enforce the civilian laws."
Writing in dissent, Judge Diarmuid O'Scannlain noted with apparent regret that the majority was the first ever to apply the "exclusionary rule" to violations of the Posse Comitatus Act.
Excluding evidence under the rule should be a "last resort" and done only after consideration of the "social costs," he argued.
"Yet, in a breathtaking assertion of judicial power, today's majority invokes this disfavored remedy for the benefit of a convicted child pornographer," O"Scannlain wrote. Frustating as the process is, your position is not hopeless.

Spoiled ballots are counted and form part of the official reported statistics (at least as far as Canada is concerned.)

If all US Citizens who disagreed with the existing system went to vote and cancelled their ballots (such as by writing-in 'none of the above,' for instance, or putting a cross right across it,) and assuming that possibility was well publicized, and the ballot counts were honest, this mass-action might end-up radicalizing the electoral process for the betterment of all citizens.

Not exactly correct or incorrect.

The Khan died, and tradition ordered the chieftains of the clans to go back home and vote a successor. The troops who smoked Baghdad went all the way to the Sinai before this happened, and only a small force was left behind there, and got annihilated.

Hadn't the Khan died, there wouldn't be Islam of todays kind. Nor would have the vatican survived - the hordes were in Hungary and Poland already.

Okay Iraq, as a sovereign country we will respect your wishes and we will cease all efforts to stop ISIS. It is your problem to see if you can stop them (you have not had much luck so far). And once ISIS takes over, and eventually attacks us, when we come next time, do not expect us to liberate the Iraq territory again and just leave like we did this last time (I know we caused massive damage, but we did indeed leave or try to leave). Full repayment for the future military engagement, along with payment for the last one and then some will be the bill. You can also expect a permanent independent military base to be positioned there for at least 100 years!

The US will continue to tacitly support ISIS until they overthrow Assad. Note Obama's tepid opposition at this point, especially in Syria.  Once Assad is gone a "moderate" Islamist like Erdogen will absorb/neutralize them and gain new US support.  No one trusts the US any longer.

The greatest losers will be the moderates and the minorities, especially the Christians.   The fools are those who think that our blood and money was or will be spent wisely or that our involvement did anything but promote evil in this place.

The strategy has been the same since the time of Carter.  Eliminate secular "tyrants" in the Mideast, using US taxpayer dollars and often US soldiers’ blood.  See Iran, Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan and Egypt.  Moderate crazies like Erdogen may or may not be on top when Assad is gone.

got totaly outplayed by Putin in eastern Europe and now they are watching there plans to finally oust Assad circle the drain. they can't arm those moderates now that those moderates aren't actually going to go to war with ISIS. then again without that aid the SAA will eventually crush them on the field so long as mother Russia keeps the supplies flowing. Assad can pop the cork cause with everybody bailing on the push to bomb Syria Washington will either have to risk an epic PR disaster by going it alone and really looking like the power mad bloodthirsty warmongers we all know they are...or accepting the fact that thier push for regime change in Syria has ended in miserable failure.

quite the pickle they find themselves in.

now wouldn't it be interesting if DC went ahead with shipping weapons to the FSA, only to have those moderate groups turn around and sell that hardware to ISIS, after all they have had plenty of experience with American hardware...

Ps. what's been beneficial for iran is that in the last twenty years it's oil has basically stayed in the ground so that it's lifeblood oil will last at least until 'perhaps' 2050?

iraq has no gas worth mentioning other than flaring off new wells, but crude oil is worth ~10x moar on the open market because of its multiple byproducts.

Saddam was giving $20,000 to the familiy of every Palestinian killed in the rebellion against their Jewish oppressors, and $10,000 to any Palestinian injured resisting Jewish oppression of the Palestinian people. These are/were enormous sums of money to the destitute Palestinian people, encouraging them to actively and willingly fight against the Jewish UBERMENSCHEN. This had to be stopped. As GW put it, when asked what kind of threat did a crippled Iraq pose to thye United States: "A Threat to Israel is a Threat to the United States."

A lot of people forgot about the $20,000.

That was far above the lifetime earning capacity of most Iraqi's.

500 million in cash thrown at a few clowns who will pilfer 90% of it for themselves, and use the rest to 'train' terrorists (who are merely ACTING like they're 'rebels') in the art of american style combat. MASTERFUL! How stupid is our fucking country?

I cant stomach this nonsense

Saudi role? Surely not

The rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis) has been aided by the continuing failure of the US Government to investigate the role of Saudi Arabia in the 9/11 attacks and its support of jihadi movements such as al-Qaeda in the years since, says former Senator Bob Graham, the co-chairman of the official inquiry into 9/11. - See more at: http://m.independent.ie/world-news/middle-east/islamic-state-us-failure-...

Why am I not surprised. While the world went to save the yezidis from the mountain, Assad dropped a few more barrel bombs and chemical containers on his people. Syrian rebels know exactly where they stand.

There were doubts that Isis was fighting Assad, but with Isis wiping out a few military bases I guess that's settled. For now, Assad has killed more of their people than IS has and they know the west isn't going to help to dethrone him. Rather the west will weaken IS, giving Assad the advantage. They can do without the 500 million in 'support', because its not going to be the heavy weapons they need to effectively fight Assad. Weapons IS already has and is using. Tanks, artillery, gunboats, they even claim to be training a small air force. That's what's needed. Not 500 million worth of night goggles and body armor. They're not stupid.

Bullshit, noone saved Yezidis - their women are in ISIS brothels run by 60 British ISIS women in a special police unit. The Peshmergas in Iraq withdrew and left Christians and Yezidis exposed - only the Turkish Kurds saved anyone. Barzani' boys ran under cover of darkness. The US bombed to save oilfields and their consulate.

This is a sham

There are 300 million Americans so raising an army of 1 million to fight in Libya and Iraq should be easy if all High Schoolers are drafted. Obama can rein in the Kiev regime or simply let Poland sed in more mercenaries, but the US should be able to deal with Iraq and Libya alone - though I favour a shortcut  - regime change in Qatar and Saudi Arabia

"...U.K. counterpart Philip Hammond explicitly ruled out air strikes in Syria, after the U.K. parliament struck down such a move last year"

This is true, Hammond did say that. But he was immediately overridden by David Cameron who said the matter is under consideration and has not been decided.

Well, it seems hopefully, the carpet bombings of civilians are going to be postponed. The American military are going to have to fight ISIL like men, on the Iraq ground and face to face.

Not too long ago I'm sure heard David Cameron was trying to convince parliament to agree to air strikes on ISIS and now with the execution of the British aid worker, I'm sure our government will follow Obama to the end. :(

these terrorist are one and the same. They had their arses handed to them by Assad & Russia, and now they think they can pose as a separate entity / re-brand to drive the NWO cause. This is so pathetic and desperate by the criminals in DC/EU and the global intelligence apparatus (CIA, MI6, Mossad etc.)

Did you see last week where some ostensibly serious adults were talking about ISIS "invading" the US through Mexico?  One of the most absurd things I've seen in print, and that's saying something.  They were actually saying ISIS might be slowed down by interference from the Mexican drug cartels. That was a telling slip.  What I took away from that was that the Mexican drug cartels are also on the CIA payroll, since everything seems to be interdepartmental turf-battling between CIA assets, everywhere you look on the globe.

Mexican druglords are responsible for more heads having been cutoff(just the police ones) than ISIS will ever dream of doing.

Since the objective is to create violent, unmanageable chaos around Europe, Russia and China, and on top of deposits of strategic resources and trans-shipment routes, it's going very well.  Only the nation that can project force globally at any time can dominate the situation in a given area, and we know which nation that is.

The beauty of the strategy is that incompetence works just as well as competence.  The more byzantine and unfathomable all the inter-relationships, the less likely peace and stability are to break out.  The more we aid the craziest, most violent and intransigent elements, the less likely anyone is to work anything out.

Nothing to see here.  Just the enactment of the what Brzezinski, Wolfowitz and Kissinger have been pushing for decades. Every so often Kissinger makes a cynical disclaimer, which is cute, but does nothing to divert the course of the policy.

In the Middle East wars the casualties are 94 percent civilian women, children and old people. What could be more barbaric than bombing civilians and destroying civilian infrastructure?

ISIS are murderers and behead people, that is barbaric, the US coalition has killed over 2 million innocent people with indiscriminate bombings over the last 10 years, that is even more barbaric.

The Kenyan Lie-ing King and the US Congress are mass murderers of civilians. Make a list and scream: No more! Hang the criminals for Treason! Repudiate bankster debt!

"We're gonna need a new strategy."

Why doesn't the President call in some of the really smart people at Harvard and Yale and Berkekely and ask them what to do?

Doesn't the President have a law degree from Harvard?  Surely he knows some people there.
