as an american, i shouldn't care too much about the internal politics of a nation i've never visited; but, i must confess, this scottish/UK thingy is of outsized importance for yours truly. owing not only to my ongoing status as a shamelessly unrepentant anglophile, my interest in all things british is also associated with the blood in my veins and my very breeding as an 'anglo-american'. if it weren't for a daub of dutch and french, my ancestry could be fairly described as 1/2 english & 1/2 scottish (but i wanna do that 23 & me test to see what's most prominent in my own proprietary genetic recipe).
based on various things i've read and whatnot, the british isles' population is comprised of five basic constituent groups: 1) the celts (the original inhabitants, now scattered about in ireland, wales and a smattering here and there). 2) the saxons (a germanic tribe traditionally associated with the areas south of london). 3) the anglos (another germanic tribe abiding in the areas north of london up to hadrian's wall). 4) the jutes (yet another germanic tribe attempting to hide their continental roots, who've made the scottish highlands home). &, finally, 5) a host of french derivations (whether they be norman or the masses of huguenots expelled by louis XIV). now, i know that this is a simplistic rendering (and undoubtedly flawed) of the UK's ethnic composition (and, Dork of the Cork, if you're reading, please do correct my errors and omissions), but it will do fine for my present purposes.
after the initial conquest of the nordic tribes, there was a concerted effort to either extinguish the celts or contain those ginger-headed freaks within areas that limited the harm they would otherwise inflict upon themselves and/or the new germanic 'settlers'. this is why we have wales and ireland. the romans then set about to subdue and slice their way throughout the lands of the anglos and saxons (but built a wall in reverence to the intractable and warlike nature of those fierce inhabitants to the north, the scots (nee jutes)). the normans, after william the bastard sacked king harold at hastings, then set about genociding everything and everyone not suitable to norman tastes -- 'civilizing' barbarians is a messy endeavor.
and so, 'british' is a polyglot of many different things; and whatever they are not not withstanding, the british most certainly are conquerors -- it's an enterprise that's sorta saturated in their blood (terribly tasteless pun, i know). and in the history of british imperialism (both at home and abroad) there is only ONE people -- or nation -- whom the brits have treated as peers and co-equals...to wit, the jutes (nee scots).
given the favorable flow of historical considerations and the mostly symbiotic nature of their traditional relationship, if i were a scot balancing the equation of this referendum -- and my formula were weighted to bias historic factors -- i would vote no on the 18th. but, if i were to instead emphasize the present and future tenses of this vote's calculus, i wouldn't be so hasty in casting my nay down london-ways.
and to extend my hypothetical thinking and train my focus on the specifics that constitute my vicarious concerns, they would have little to do with any peculiarities involving scottishness and/or independence; rather, my inclination to vote yes would be sourced in the same font fueling the frustrations everywhere from cornwall, to surrey to norfolk...the very same defects in parliamentary democracy which have propelled UKIP into meteoric ascendency.
for not only are the brit's representatives (everything from council seats up to #10 downing street) unresponsive to their constituent's concerns, their priorities are positively antithetical to those who vote them into office. in other words, this referendum is (to my hypothetical mind) is NOT a function of emergent scottish nationalism, it is instead a verdict on the deficiencies of modern western democracy -- specifically how it dilutes individual responsibility & culpability among those officially elected and, moreover, in democracy's matchless efficacy in blunting popular will and redirecting it against the mindless mewing sheep...i mean 'voters'...it purportedly serves.
and so, imagining myself the fence-sitting scottish citizen, i reckon i'd take a look at parliament, i'd carefully consider the tragic trajectory these neer-do-wells continually nudge their nation along, i'd ask myself if there's any hope for a positive redirectioning...i'd make a figurative scale: on one side i'd put parliment and the present tense, on the other UKIP and the future; and then i'd factor in the history.
at this point, i'd probably fence-sit till right up to ballot-casting time... in the meantime i'd fume and fuss...i'd rant and rave (a time honored scottish tradition)...and, most likely, i'd vote "no" for now, tucking my faith in the burgeoning UKIP & its rockstar Farage, and above all vowing to my hypothetical scottish-janus self that if i didn't see substantial and substantive change in the very near, another referendum in 2015 would satisfy my fury...that, or a new-fangled William Wallace (rumor has it, one of janus's ancestors).
i'd add a song, but i can't compete with Son of Nemo.
