Got (Record-High-Priced) Milk?

Tyler Durden's picture

Hot on the heels of yesterday's low PPI and this morning's falling CPI, we thought it worth noting (given The Fed's pre-occupation that inflation is running too low) that the price of milk - that staple of the American diet - just hit an all-time high. Nope, no inflation here...

As an aside, while correlation is not causation, the price of milk and the growth of the Fed Balance Sheet have an 82% correlation since March 2009.

My guernsey steer is going to butcher's this next Monday.  I send him off with mixed emotions, but know that he's been well cared for and fed only wholesome feed/pasture.  He's produced tons of compost for us, spread seeds to reseed our pasture, and spread nutrients/nitrogen all over our pasture.  All this and he'll make great steaks, too.

Our spring chickens are just now beginning to lay.  We'll be getting over a dozen eggs a day (15 to 18)....got a ton of people who buy the excess from my son.

Raw milk is delicious.  unlike store bought, pasteurized milk, it doesn't rot.  It sours.  You can eat milk throughout the souring process as it produces different tastes and different types of food.

Anyway, in my state it is illegal to sell raw milk to consumers, so I don't.  I've been offered 8-10 dollars a gallon.  At that price, my milk cow would be almost as profitable as the chickens (which are easy/cheap to keep).  Without selling milk, I figure I save several thousand dollars in food costs by having cows (milk, cheese, ice cream, butter, etc).  In addition to this, we'll get about 800 pounds of beef in two weeks. I have a line of people interested in buying half the steer, at about 5 bucks a pound.  The steer is very profitable.

In addition to this, we garden, eat from our orchard, and have been picking up how to eat wild greens (plantain, numerous local herbs, salad greens, various roots, tea herbs).

For a person who went from zero knowledge to where I am now in a few short years, I can promise you that you can learn to be more self-sufficient if you care to.  If anything, find a buddy doing what I'm doing, and offer to spend a weekend helping on his/her farm.  You'll get some hands on experience and see where food comes from.  Learn to garden and you can feed yourself despite whatever inflation comes your way.

Good luck all.

Local retail sales down over 30% yoy according to the two local managers I talked to; one is a mall-based small clothing shop the other a free-standing one. That's gross revenue drop. They both said profit margins are almost zero and they are hoping it is not a loss but the final numbers for the first two weeks of Sept are not completely in. And that's despite huge disocunts, cash-backs and so on. It's funny how retail is plunging while food is soaring.

there are a record amount of longs in the silver and gold comex markets now while the PM's are in backwardation , very odd....

That is why Pm prices are getting smashed, Comex is trying to chase these long positions out of the market. Think china is holding these long positions, They will call for physical  delivery as soon as the Shanghai physical gold market opens sept 29
then it will be game over for comex and the dollar , just sharing my thoughts ..

China has figured out they will take a big hit on their trillions of holdings in US dollars . So instead  they have decided to take a hit on the long positions they hold in silver and gold in the comex,  It is their hedge against dollar collaspe  Better than taking bigger hits by dumping us treasuries.
China has figured correctly , when they bust the comex and PM prices sky rocket , they China will make back all their losses they are incurring now  holding long PM contracts  ..

Wallmart has the best price on dogs right now.  But they are keeping the price down by adding fillers.

Check out Hebrew National.  I think soy is the 2nd ingredient in their all beef dogs.

Any of the 'real food' (generally found around the outer ring of a grocery store) stuffs have been going up in price steadily/rapidly for years.

The 'fake food' (generally found in the aisles in the middle of the grocery store) is simply suffering 'shrink-flation'.

Profits in the dairy industry have never been higher; feed costs are low and milk prices are high.  I read an industry report a couple of months ago to try to learn why whey protein prices are increasing so quickly.  Evidently China's dairy import demand is increasing 35% yoy which at present is mostly supplied by US dairy farmers.  This represents an increase in demand of 8% to US farmers, which is being met by a 1% increase in herd size, and higher prices.  Europe and Australia are increasing their dairy herds to meet China's demand; later this year the cows will start to reach milking age.  My translation of the summary of the report goes something like:

US farmers will concede the China market to Europe and Australia.  US consumers are being sucessfully trained to pay higher dairy prices.  Profit margins will be maintained by reducing overhead (herd size).

Most milk available in groceries is labeled "hormone free" these days.

As for the "organic" stuff?  Leave it on the shelf!

I have kept organic vegetable gardens and know that organic" is the best way to absolutely purchase NON-GMO ...

But take a look at the fine print on those cartons of "organic" milk sold by unscrupulous profiteers ...

do you notice the words "Ultra Pasteurized" or "UHT" (for short)?

This means that your organic milk has been IRRADIATED so that it will have a much longer "shelf life" -

this way consumers have, literally MONTHS to pick up that carton, instead of about TEN DAYS!

Besides which, anyone who has ever tasted "Parmalat" or milk sold in the Carribean would know that UHT milk has a strange aftertaste which is reminiscent of burnt cheese.  Well ... guess what.

Buy simply pasteurized (if you can find it), whole homogenized is A-OK ... but if you are REALLY a milk lover, there is nothing so delicous as WHOLE RAW!  Find that at a local dairy - or better, join a local "cow share" at realmilk.org - and drink the stuff that sustained populations for thousands of generations!   (Natural probiotics, no extra charge!)

Pooplava's Financial Sense had a piece a couple days ago, an interview with a gentlman (Rigobon) who heads up the 'Billion prices project' at MIT.   In essence (and in accordance with FSN's 'new look' wherein no anti-bullish articles or sentiments are allowed), Mr. Rigobon suggests that BLS, CPI and PPI numbers are fairly well in line with his prognositcations and therefore should be trusted as 'accurate'.   The interviewer baited him, suggesting that since there had yet been no 'hyperinflation' - or even, high-inflation (read: Inflation in prices as a direct consequence of the increase in supply of money), that people should 'get real' and get with the (Bull) program.

By the way, did I spell the name above correctly (Pooplava) - as in a mental picture of a rupturing Vesuvius of explosive Bull-market Diarrhea?   Thanks in advance for the clarification.

The billion prices project has an interesting history, as shortly after it started it began showing a divergence with the CPI, and then the program was shut down. And then it came back without CPI divergence.

Here's a ZH story from 2011 -- after ZH pointed out the divergence, BPP was gone.

Wed, 09/17/2014 - 16:09 | 5227508 seek

What's interesting is that they didn't adjust the historical data, so if you look at their own charts, you can see the giant gap in 2010 and that the gap disappears right around April, 2011, coincidentally when BPP went offline and then returned.

Wed, 09/17/2014 - 16:27 | 5227571 SgtShaftoe
SgtShaftoe's picture

I just had a conversation with a financial CFA discussing this very interview, They echoed the sentiments of CPI and BPI.

In looking at the charts, I'm having trouble finding the gap, but I remember when it happened.  I wonder if there's a way to find data that challenges their model.  Have they even published their methodology?

Wed, 09/17/2014 - 16:50 | 5227655 seek
seek's picture

They've stated that the inputs to the model are proprietary data from pricestats, and without the data the model is useless. When they were shut down I know it was said that they'd have to be part of a private venture in order to start up someplace else.

If you look at the second chart at the link (annual inflation), the divergence in 2010 is very obvious, and it ends right around the end of Q1 2011.

The BPP didn't have the right heuristics, you see.

You see, no one actually cares if a chocolate bar shrinks from 6 oz to 4 oz.  Same amount of enjoyment, according to CPI.   Likewise, if your ground beef from Taco Bell is now 50% filler, that has no CPI implications.  Tastes just as good.  MMMMM...  10 pairs of socks instead of 12 in a pack?  They last longer now, take our word for it.  No CPI implications...

I could do this all day.  Or as long as a person can do serious soul-destroying work, any way.

Are they sending NSLs to financial news people?  Or are they just sending Yellen's goons to deliver gift packages of brand new nail guns to the "nails" that stick up?  It's a serious question.  Does anyone have an answer?

I second that.  Maybe thirds.  Daz good dense Ice Cream.

B&J seems to have developed a bit of air whipped in after being bought out.  Varying amounts of air are added to most grocery store ice cream.  The best have only 4 or 5 ingredients.  B&J prices have ranged over the past year from $3 for a full pint to nearly $6 recently.  Wally's isn't bad, not much air - think it is one of those loss leaders.

Only if your State Legislature is controlled by the dairy industry!  In many New England States you can buy what is known as "Certified Milk" which means that the milk is not only tested for pathogens on a regular basis, but barns are inspected for cleanliness.  Only problem is one usually needs to purchase directly from the Farm.  With the "milk clubs" you execute a liability waiver - but the club milk is sourced from farms that feed their herds grass or hay ONLY.

My supplier was Amish, and his children consumed exactly what was sold to customers.  Save for a few very rare instances when a cow might have accessed "fermented hay" or early onion grass, it was absolutely delicious - and the cream line fell at mid-gallon.  I would order twice a month, and soon learned that it was never necessary to freeze any, as it stayed perfectly fresh in a well-cooled fridge.  Some club members swore they could drink raw when they couldn't tolerate pasteurized... and others with Crohn's disease said the butter had a healing effect.

This video was made circa 1990.  Since that time consumers have gotten wise to Recominant Bovine Hormone (RbH) and started voting for "hormone free"  with their dollars.  Today you can almost always buy hormone free milk at your local grocer - as consumers literally drove it from the marketplace.   BTW farmers who supply Cabot cheese (of Vermont) have pledged not to use RbH.  I would make no such guarantee to folks who eat "American" processed cheese.

Milk, $2.99, bacon $3.99/lb, steaks, porterhouse,t-bones, strips, $6.99-8.99/lb, whole pork loins, $1.99/lb, chicken breasts $1.99/lb, thighs $.99/lb, bread $.99/loaf. All these products are grown, baked and raised locally, butchering on premises and it's fresh! Fuck Wal- Mart, Krogers, Meiers.

about 3 months ago i read a book called The China Study.  basically demonstrating over a period of 25 to 30yrs that eating a diet free of animal fats was significantly healthier.  so i've been trying it.  one of the benefits has been a much lighter food bill.  so far it hasn't been that difficult, fresh produce makes it makes easier no doubt, i'll see what happens in the winter.  i admit to feeling healthier, my skin etc looks better...my lab numbers are much improved.  so when i think about prepping now, it's relatively easier.  a garden or garden boxes essentially and a store of nuts and grains.

Read it more carefully -- it's not necessarily the animal fat.  Cambell showed in something like 20 years of lab work that he could turn cancer on and off by increasing decreasing the animal protein in diet.  The experiments were done with rats and the protein used was casein.

Every time ZH post something about price it is more about sensationalism than facts. Ok based on the chart above, in 1996 milk's high was around 3.9 dollars, minimal wage was 4.75, so you could buy 1.21 gallons with one hour labor. Today at 4.42 and minimal wages on 7.25 you can buy 1.64 gallons for the same hour worked. Shame on ZH for hiding the truth and congratulations to you....you are richer !!

Look at the article's title. And the comments here. ZH is NOT comparing 2 things for the sake or comparison. They are trying to establish a inflation base. Now when you compare data, and some of the data is dubious what king of conclusion you will get to? Milk is cheaper now in real terms. So even if the nominal terms are up, it is still deflation. By comparing it to the FED balance sheet what is he trying to prove. That monetary expansion is deflationary?
