It’s Not Just The Police – The Feds Are Also Militarizing Public Schools With Grenade Launchers, M16s & Tanks

Events last month in Ferguson, Missouri (read my detailed thoughts here) forced Americans to confront the frightening reality that many of of the nation’s police departments have been quietly, but consistently, militarizing over the past couple of decades. It’s one thing to intellectually understand that this has happened, it’s quite another to see cops deploy tanks and point sniper rifles at peacefully protesting U.S. citizens.
Just as disturbing as the scenes themselves, is the fact that this has been happening for so long under the 1033 transfer program with only muted criticism. The program was originated in the late 1990′s under the National Defense Authorization Act of 1997 (recall that the NDAA is also being used to allow for the indefinite detention of American citizens without trial), and it allows for the transfer of excess Department of Defense equipment to domestic police. In other words, it has been public policy for almost two decades to militarize the police.
With the issue squarely still in the public consciousness, it would behoove us to understand that this program is not only arming police with weapons of war. In fact, public schools are also receiving such items, including grenade launchers, M16s and MRAPs.
The Wall Street Journal reports that:
A federal program that has drawn criticism in recent weeks for supplying surplus military gear to local police has also provided high-powered rifles, armored vehicles and other equipment to police at public schools, some of whom were unprepared for what they were getting.
In the wake of school shootings in Newtown, Conn., and elsewhere, some school security departments developed SWAT teams, added weapons and called on the federal government to help supply gear. But now, the program is facing renewed scrutiny from both outside observers and schools using it.
The Los Angeles Unified School District stocked up on grenade launchers, M16 rifles and even a multi-ton armored vehicle from the program. But the district is getting rid of the grenade launchers, which it never intended to use to launch grenades or use in a school setting, said Steven Zipperman, chief of the Los Angeles Schools Police Department. The launchers, received in 2001, might have helped other police in the county disperse crowds by shooting rubber munitions, he said.
In July, the district received a massive MRAP armored vehicle. Mr. Zipperman said his department thought it could be useful for evacuations and to save lives in a “sustained incident.”

In Texas, near the Mexican border, the sprawling Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District has 34,700 students and operates its own SWAT team, thanks in part to military gear it received in recent years from the federal program. The gear included two Humvees and a cargo truck, as well as power generators, said district Police Chief Ricardo Perez. The district applied for weapons, too, but wasn’t given any, so instead purchased its own M4 and AR-15 assault-style rifles, he said.
The weapons are given to schools through the 1033 Program, created by Congress in the early 1990s to allow law-enforcement agencies to obtain excess Defense Department supplies, paying only for shipping. The program has transferred $5.1 billion in items, including $4.5 million worth in 2013.
Among recipients are more than a dozen school police departments, according to a spreadsheet from the Defense Logistics Agency, which runs the program. But for security reasons the list excludes districts that received only “tactical” gear such as weapons, as opposed to other types of supplies. That means the list likely understates the number of districts that participated.
California is one of few states that provides a list of participating school districts and what they received. Its state website shows that two school police departments received armored vehicles, others added M-16s and grenade launchers to their armories, while one district took in televisions, projectors and a podium but no weapons.
What I find most interesting about all of this, is where have all the “gun control” politicians and hysterics been on the dangers of the 1033 for all these years?
Indeed, while politicians in D.C. appear determined to invade half the countries on earth, while simultaneously arming the other half, from terrorist groups in the Middle East to police departments and school districts domestically, it appears the only group being singled out for disarmament is the citizenry itself. Makes you wonder doesn’t it…

We're now in an arms race with the local Catholic School Diocese. I'm pretty sure we could take them, thanks to a few crates of M4s we just got from the government. They have been converted so they won't go full-auto, but we now have what we need for a surgical strike against the local middle school, if we can coordinate well with a nearby Troop and hold discipline of our Weblos under sustained fire.

I've been drilling into my wife's head for the past couple of years that if I ever disappear under strange circumstances that the government is 100% behind it and to never settle for an answer that is anything other than that....
LA schools are powder kegs full of directionless cheeldren waiting to blow. We have seen a preview with the Knockout Games and Flash/Gash Mobs. I do admit the armored personnel carriers and tanks look a little too intimidating so spray the milspec equipment with pastels like sky blue and mellow yellow paints. Pictures of the Kardashians and Kanye West et al will give the armor a kinder gentler look.
Kids must be very confused today. Dang. you shoot a spit ball and they call the cops. Now they have GI Joes and tanks guarding the schools. And I thought crawling under the desk silly...

i suppose it should just be coincidental that most of the over production just happened to be of those very items that are being donated to all these local departments of everything. pretty soon, libraries will begin receiving stinger missiles and artillery.
this does all tend to boggle the imagination. are school districts, as such, to be given custodianship of these weapons? this just defies comprehension. apart from all the issues associated with maintenance, how can this possibly be justified? besides, if our nation's teachers deploy the level of competence and enterprise they bring to the classroom, my money's on the students. i mean: those who can't, teach (or did i miss something?). imagine, putting firearms and MRAPs in the hands of those who happily peddle common core...why, those kids will disarm and slaughter their teachers in no time flat. they've been playing video games in preparation for this exact scenario since before they were born.
and there are other problems associated with arming our teachers. think of all the tax hikes needed to fund their hazard pay; and then there's all the training costs -- it takes weeks of training to teach a teacher how to identify the child-terrorist at play. worst of all, and you can be sure, the day these terrorist-tots launch their fiendish plot to declare a caliphate over your local school district, that very day those teacher/commandos will go on strike...mark my word!

amorica, this is happening...this is really happening. school departments equipped with armaments designed for mass slaughter. in all sincerity, i do my best not to give into fear or the cowardly impulse; but when one considers recent events and developments, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by the ceaseless barrage. it's like a collage of mind-blowing and belief defying news items that all point to an unthinkable end...and the purpose of it all taken together agrees that that bleak thing is where it all leads. and the horrific truth of it all lingers in front of us, and we can't bring ourselves to acknowledge it for what it is.

It's almost like they are prepositioning military gear for the people's use everywhere. We got 5 cops here in my "city" and a shitload of military gear. What's the chance of them holding on to it if the shit hits the fan? I would guess that at least 50% of the men in the local community is active or retired military or veterans, and a good chunk of the women as well.

School police forces??? School SWAT teams?? Really? I must admit to being a hopelessly naive person, not to realize some parts of the country have - or allow - school police forces.
Well, leave it to MIC to sniff out and assimilate every security concern, bringing it to breast to nourish a new apparatus for localizing war.
If I worked in the LA school system I would want an MRAP, my own M16, and a grenade launcher, also body armor and range time.

If I stand back and view the big picture from the late nineties until today it looks like the largest story is decision-making to have the Yuan become the reserve currency. The US treasury looted, outsourcing, allowing access to sensitive nuclear, supercomputer and missle tech. Interesting that the decision to add 20,000 cops to the beat and militarize them came at the same time as deregulating the financial system.
Seems like the BIS and CFR (the two entities that rule the planet) knew well in advance a lot of people were going to get a lot more poor and desperate in America.
Police states are horrible for business confidence and hasten collapse. But since I have seen official financial statements like "we'll just kill the dollar" or Tim Geithner and Bernanke in 2008 or 2009 testifying to Senate they support creation of new currency I make assumptions these transnational group leaders plan on killing the USA brand. I believe a lot of people on government subsidies are going to have a nasty wake up call to getting cut back to .40 cents on the dollar in the near future, before 2020 is my best guess.

I remember the collapse of the Soviet Union and soon after being on the Internet in the early nineties and talking with some Russian IT folks. They were mostly small shops workinh out of a house taking piecemeal jobs and sharing resources amoungst themselves best they could. I felt bad for them but they were hopeful about freedom. Now that is becoming us.
I feel bad for the millenials. At least as a Gen-X guy I got to live in the 80's and 90's when times were better. They get the biggest shit sandwich and by the time things are better there best performing years and ability to raise a family will be over. I am an optimist but it certainly seems it will get worse before getting better.

Oh God, it’s getting scarier each day. I do realize they what to protect kids from outer and maybe inner threats but overdoing it is never a solution. Moreover there is always a possibility that because of some guard’s carelessness these weapons may reach wrong hands.
