Settle down. Nothing will happen. What could possibly happen? NATO invades the Crimea? Russia would nuke them. No one, even Poroshenko, believes that Russia is about to invade Europe. Poroshenko made that speech for domestic Ukrainian consumption, nothing more. It means nothing. Everyone who matters knows it means nothing. End of story.
What Poroshenko wants is new, shiny U.S. weapons like those being sent to the "moderate" Syrian rebels. But even with shiny, new U.S. weapons, the Ukraine army still consists of demoralized conscripts who will probably drop those shiny weapons and run away as soon as they can. Which means the East Ukrainian rebels will get to use those shiny, new U.S. weapons against the government.

Both sides use ceasefire to regroup, resupply and strategize. Just got in touch with a friend living near Rostov. She says the movement across the Ukrainian border appears to be constant and bi-directional. Since Russia eagerly accepts refugees and most often settles them close to Ukraine on the inside, locals aren't too excited about it. The majority are partiotic, but there is opposition to Putin as well. There is a witch hunt going on. People are accused of being traitors, spies if they don't support what's going on. There's no middle ground. Either you're with Russia or against.
When during our invasion into Afghanistan and Iraq celebrities spoke out against the involvement, their carreers were either temporarily or permanently destroyed. Same thing is happenning in Russia. Few press representatives and entertainers either negatively commented on strategy or accused Putin of using war to justify invasion into private lives. Now they're branded as Nazi sympathizers, or [insert random racial derogatory term]-lovers.
Does Russia send troops and equipment across? They do. Since they control the Eastern borders they do whatever they think is necessary to protect the national interest. To them it is an anti-NATO defense operation and if the West plays dirty, who says Russia has to do it by the book. Anything goes. There are plenty of contractors and volunteers representing interest groups that aren't necessarily associated with the government. Similar to what we have with private merc armies in the US, often hired by resource corporations. There are multiple groups, big and small, interested in preserving, expanding or shifting resource exploration, communicaitons and so on.
Why do you think gas doesn't just get shut off overnight? Well, that is because there are government and private interests defending their own strategies. Those who sell resources for money may not necessarily care about who gets it, as long as the money is paid. To them bigger sales are better. When the government wants to use exports for leverage, it has to battle producers. Sometimes business and government are in agreement, sometimes they're not.
Regardless, to reiterate. The movement across the Eastern Ukraininan border is bi-directional. People get in, people get out. Cities close to the border get saturated with refugees. Many locals simply don't want to be involved. They dislike migrants in general (regardless of where they originate). Russia has its own "dey took er jerbs" thing going, but when voicing their opinion, they're now branded as unpatriotic. Russian government uses conflict as a distraction to introduce anti-privacy reforms. Many parallels to how things are done over here in the US. Then again, not like the methods are patented. Never let a good conflict go to waste. Every politician knows that.

I think the angle you miss is that Russia also has a conservative, sovereigntist element in it's elite. They are largely in the state at at this point, military, intelligence, etc, as opposed to the oligarchs who would rather see Russia taken over. The Sovereigntists have a majority of the population behind them. They realise that all this is really a war against Russia and they are pushing Putin to do more.
It is a long game...for how much longer will this World War smolder as a low-intensity conflict? How long can Russia and China play the low key defense? How long until the missiles start to fly?

Europe left itself an out: the agreement does not become effective until 2016, and even then, Ukraine will not be a member of NATO.

The Ukraine economy is tanking and winter lies ahead with a cut in Russian gas. Ukraine is sinking and drifting. And one reason is the European countries are refusing to help.
