I think I am reading that Scotland's senior citizens/pensioners voted this down. I ask why, and conclude, admittedly based on little information, that the proponents of Scottish independence did an insufficient job of assuring those senior citizens that their pensions, into which many of them had contributed all their working lives, would not be stolen. It would seem that, if Scotland has the oil, and therefore would have the oil money, that enough of that money could be directed to the pensions so that no pensions would be stolen. I hope the independence proponents try again, and next time work harder at making the math clear for their senior citizens.

I always want to see the math. For example, does anyone here have the math on how much more the average USA Social Security pensioner is taking out than he put in when he was working? I did the math for myself, by going back and finding out what I had put in every year of my life, converting that to ounces of gold at the average price of gold for that year, and then taking my "payout" and projecting it forward with 2% "cost of living adjustment" increases" every year, to the age when I am supposed to die, and based on 2014's price of gold. Came out just about exactly even. Of course, 2014's price of gold, in my opinion, is below average, and if the Chinese and others who want an alternate reserve currency prevail, perhaps the price of gold will double, or whatever. If it doubles, then I will have put in twice as many ounces of gold as I will take out. And I have the good fortune to be alive. A lot of Americans who paid into Social Security didn't live long enough to get any "payout". Who got that money? On the other hand, Social Security also seems to have been adopted by Congress and the Presidents as being the primary source of "charity" money for those who can't work, or "can't" work, or whom "we" need to rescue from political turmoil in other countries. So Congress and the Presidents get to look "charitable", but the bill for that charity is actually paid by Social Security payers - common working Americans. Anyway, I wish the smart people here would do some math on this, and show me if they think I am mistaken. But my conclusion is that Social Security pensioners aren't getting anything for nothing, and aren't asking for anything for nothing.
IF TSHTF, wanna bet the demographics in reverse are gonna be a real be-otch? Last I checked, Seniors ain't as mobile as they once was. ;-)
Sounds like they get to deal with a bunch of disapointed young people for a few years more....

Too many old people. The young ones with nothing to lose were overwhelmingly in favor of separation. Wait another few years. In the meantime just set back and watch it unfold. You guys are half-bright, but you should know you are nothing special - there have been many sitting in declining empires who saw what was happening. You are not exceptional. The exceptional ones do not express tired negativity, they grow more sharp as the days progress and help future generations prepare. But maybe that is asking too much; particularly from Amerikan men who are tired beyond their years.
Too many young people. I would help future generations prepare by advising them to have fewer children. There are more children every day, but there is less planet every day, so there are fewer resources per child every day. All wars are fights for resources. More children = more wars. More wars = less freedom, as well as less happiness and more suffering.
Of course, one must assume there is an equally disenchanted demographic in the rest of the United Kingdom.

this probably wasn't too much different than the 2008 US election, driven by voters self interest. for a large number of individuals scottish independence represents a threat to their income and security. the free scotland movement needs more than patriotic emotion, they need to produce a balance sheet that will demonstrate how an independent Scotland can remain solvent.
but thats the problem. the american founders offered nothing but hardship. many had death warrants on their heads and had their homes, lands and businesses confiscated or burned. some may have had notions that things might be better if successful, but few were offered sign on bonuses, iphones, ebt or healthcare. they froze and starved on promises of occasional payment in near worthless script, and the hope to be able to live life without government oppression.
if somebody can only be moved based entirely on financial gain, then freedom and independence is not really for them. how independent can you be if you need someone else's fiat promises in order to act?
if the scots need more and bigger versions of the status quo to act, then all they'll end up with is more of the same thing they're leaving.

And where would we be if we didn’t challenge the status quo and TPTB from time to time and prove to them there really are limits to just how far they can go. Not only pensions. England subsidises Scotland to the tune of a NET (After Oil income) of GBP 30 BILLION per year. Also, there was so much uncertainty about important issues, currency etc., that IMHO this was a perfectly rational decision. The "Yes" campaign should have done a much better job of thrashing out the issues. The devil is in the detail.....?

Demographic gerrymandering at play in this referendum. That is why it would have never passed with a high turnout since the the higher the turnout the more likely it will split exactly along those lines.
Despite having tried to rig it the other way by allowing 16 year-olds to vote?
There are probably more pensioners then youngins. It would be interesting to see how these numbers skewed when adjusted for population of the age groups.
