GDP Watch: Summer 2014 Was World's Warmest Ever

Tyler Durden's picture

Since weather has become the most crucial factor in forecasting economic growth, we thought it crucial to the future of central bank policy to note that Summer 2014 was officially the hottest one ever, according to NOAA. This of course means there is "pent-up" cold weather, which may explain the collapse in global growth expectations. However, this chatter about heat may surprise Americans (aside from those that live in the Western States) as the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast U.S. were running cooler than normal (thus concerns about growth). According to NOAA’s records, this is the 38th consecutive August and 354th consecutive month with a global average temperature above the 20th century average.

As The Washington Post reports,

It was the warmest summer on Earth since records began in 1880, according to a monthly climate report by NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center.

In addition, August 2014 was the warmest August on record for the globe, according to all three major organizations that track the earth’s temperature.

Over land and ocean, NOAA reports that August ended 0.75 degrees Celsius above the 20th century average, while the summer months, June through August, were 0.71 degrees warmer than normal.

Which explains this... (as meteoreconomists downgrade growth expectations on the basis that hot summer means cold winter in the Keynesian mean-reverting world of weather prognostication)

Global GDP growth plunged to cycle lows as the "hot" summer swept across the world.

But...

Over land, the high latitudes were incredibly warm compared to normal, in Siberia in particular. The sizzling heat in the western U.S. and Mexico drove up the temperature for the JMA analysis, while the eastern U.S. was cooler than average in all three analyses.

The summer and August records may come as a surprise to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast U.S., which were running cooler (and wetter) than normal according to both NASA and NOAA.

According to NOAA’s records, this is the 38th consecutive August and 354th consecutive month with a global average temperature above the 20th century average.

*  *  *
So prepare yourself for Q3 earnings excuses that it was not Goldilocks... in fact it was too hot to shop/spend/invest in capex in the West and too cold to buy iPhones in the East...

They are talking about 0.5 to 2.0 degrees difference.  There is more variance than that in the instruments used over the past 100 years.

We really have no idea what the "truth" is, other than the fact that the Ice Age ended without Humanity- and it is pollution that matters, much more so than the "climate change" bogeyman.

OK, hope you're sitting down because this is likely to challenge every facet of your mental capacity.

'global' in this instance refers to an overall trend across many areas, one could say 'the globe' or 'the planet you are on'. it is possible to observe region specific weather counter to the 'global' climate (i.e. snow in alaska) trend but these region specific incidences do not contradict the 'global' trend.

Yes, i am aware the difference between weather and climate is a highly complex & frequently misunderstood topic on zh but I refer you to look here for more information:

And an amusing note from watts:

Watts best argument: it's a sine wave man!! You see, it's all going to get better! Recall: watts (unlike you) does not dispute NOAA data most of the time. When it seems to agree with his hypothesis he talks about it being accurate, when it contradicts his hypothesis he complains it's being adjusted.

NOAA is to climate data what the BLS is to economic data. You'll never hear from them that the long term correlation between CO2 content and mean temperature broke down when the industrial revolution started pumping out record amouts of CO2 (CO2 happens to be one eighth as effective in retaining heat as water vapor is but Goldman hasn't found a way to tax water vapor). You won't see any graphs on global temperatures that entend back further than the mini-iceage in the 1600s because that impressive ramp in temperature disappears into the background if you do. You'll never see a compilation of the twenty years of bad climate predictions that make the IMF's economic predictions look accurate by comparison. You'll hear about how the polar ice is about to disappear (according to Al Gore it should all be gone by now) but you won't see the graph showing that Arctic ice is 50% greater than the low it hit a couple years ago, (it is lower than average but not as low as the stories would portray). You certainly won't hear from them that the Antarctic icecap just blew out the alltime record for how much of the southern ocean is frozen. I'm not sure what 'summer' means in a global context but they sure had a cold 'summer' down there this year and last year set the record for the coldest temperatures ever recorded, ever, globally, anywhere.  As a scientist I detest the way the .GOV agencies have politicized scientific data into a battle of 'anthropogenic global warming' vs 'no climate change' that is about as real as the fake red/blue battle between CNN and Fox news. There are changes happening but we'll have a hard time figuring out what they are and how to address them when scientists can lose their jobs and certainly their funding if they deviate from the Goldman-backed global warming propaganda we are having shoved down our throats. Polution is real and the climate does seem to be hitting more extremes but we're being kept in the dark and fed a bunch of manure.

"The NOAA Global (Land and Ocean) Surface Temperature Anomaly dataset is a product of the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC). NCDC merges their Extended Reconstructed Sea Surface Temperature version 3b (ERSST.v3b) with the Global Historical Climatology Network-Monthly (GHCN-M) version 3.2.0 for land surface air temperatures. NOAA infills missing data for both land and sea surface temperature datasets using methods presented in Smith et al (2008). Keep in mind, when reading Smith et al (2008), that the NCDC removed the satellite-based sea surface temperature data because it changed the annual global temperature rankings. Since most of Smith et al (2008) was about the satellite-based data and the benefits of incorporating it into the reconstruction, one might consider that the NCDC temperature product is no longer supported by a peer-reviewed paper."

Alternately:

Like the UAH lower troposphere temperature data, Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) calculates lower troposphere temperature anomalies from microwave sounding units aboard a series of NOAA satellites. RSS describes their data at the Upper Air Temperature webpage. The RSS data are supported by Mears and Wentz (2009) Construction of the Remote Sensing Systems V3.2 Atmospheric Temperature Records from the MSU and AMSU Microwave Sounders. RSS also presents their lower troposphere temperature data in various subsets. The land+ocean TLT data are here. Curiously, on that webpage, RSS lists the data as extending from 82.5S to 82.5N, while on their Upper Air Temperature webpage linked above, they state:

The August 2014 RSS lower troposphere temperature anomaly is +0.19 deg C. It dropped sharply (a decrease of about -0.17 deg C) since July 2014.

In our fast moving world some stories that should be noted often are overlooked and ignored. We all saw and heard about hurricane Sandy, in addition to flooding the subway system of New York and halting financial trading Sandy may of even tilted the Presidential election.

If Sandy had indeed made a difference in the election outcome one might say Sandy has had the impact of also altering our future. While we are becoming more use to these uncommon "weather occurrences", it is possible that we should be viewing them as a warning of worse yet to come. More on this subject in the article below.

That would be tropical storm Sandy.  It was not a hurricane when it made either of it's two land falls.  The flooding of the subway happened at high tide.

Politicking stopped in the immediate wake of Sandy and the wind went out of Romney's sails as a result.  Romney never recovered momentum.

My point was more focused on the idea and irony that we often fail to pay enough attention to weather and how it can even influence our future in ways that go undetected. Another example that is often forgotton is Washington pushed through a massive 60 billion dollar aid bill to rebuild property damaged from the storm. This is paid for by all Americans not just those on the East coast. The ugly math is this storm cost each and every American roughly 180 dollars.

Below is a list of the worlds ten most crucial problems counted down from "least to most crucial"  The world must begin to address these many problems with long term solutions. Most of these are issues that center on our sustainability. Sadly, politicians do not deal well with such things leaving us without direction. As we look at the human condition we can let fate take us where it may choose or we can take control of our future by proper planning and by guiding it as best we can.
