US F-22 Jets Intercept 6 Russian Warplanes 55 Miles Off The Alaskan Coast

Tyler Durden's picture

Yesterday it was the UK which scrambled a squadron of Typhoon jets when two Russian Tu-95 "Bear" Bombers had gotten too close to its shores, even if still located in international space. Then overnight, none other than the US did the same when two F-22 fighter jets intercepted six Russian military airplanes just over 50 miles away from the western coast of Alaska, military officials said Friday, among which identified as two IL-78 refueling tankers, two Mig-31 fighter jets and the same two "Bear" long-range bombers, which are known to carry tactical ICBMs with nuclear warheads among their arsenal.

According to the AP, they looped south and returned to their base in Russia after the U.S. jets were scrambled.

Lt. Col. Michael Jazdyk, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said the U.S. jets intercepted the planes about 55 nautical miles from the Alaskan coast at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday.

Additionally, at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, two Canadian CF-18 fighter jets intercepted two of the long-range bombers about 40 nautical miles off the Canadian coastline in the Beaufort Sea.

In both cases, the Russian planes entered the Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends about 200 miles from the coastline. They did not enter sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada.

Jazdyk said the fighter jets were scrambled “basically to let those aircraft know that we see them, and in case of a threat, to let them know we are there to protect our sovereign airspace.”

In the past five years, jets under NORAD’s command have intercepted more than 50 Russian bombers approaching North American airspace.

So just more training missions by Russia, or is the Kremlin testing out US and UK response capabilities?

And if the US scrambles jets whenever Russian jets fly over international airspace, some 200 miles away from the coastline, how should Russia feel when US, pardon NATO, military jets do combat missions some 20 miles away from the Russian border from the Baltics all the way to Ukraine? Or perhaps the answer is irrelevant, because when it comes to "feeling threatened", only one side of the rational response story matters.

Ehh are we sure we were not in their airspace, I think Russia at some places is less than 55 miles from Russia.  After all Palin could see it from her porch hahaha.

But seriously these USA Mavericks have a habit of intercepting planes in another country's airspace for the past few decades ;)

Yawn, another non event designed to scare the sheeple with the Russian bogeyman.  Just another disgusting example of the servile nature of the USSA mainstream whore media.  Meanwhile, in the Ukraine, the junta breaks the ceasefire by hitting Donetsk with 2 ballistic missiles, blowing up a chemical plant.  But you never hear a word of this on CNN.

Not what she said -

http://www.snopes.com/politics/palin/russia.asp

The basis for the line was Governor Palin's 11 September 2008 appearance on ABC News, her first major interview after being tapped as the vice-presidential nominee. During that appearance, interviewer Charles Gibson asked her what insight she had gained from living so close to Russia, and she responded: "They're our next-door neighbors, and you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska, from an island in Alaska"

Strange how it is very, very bad of the Chinese to declare an Air Identification Zone over the East China Sea (which the USSA promptly violates with flights of B-52s) and it is very, very bad, of the Russians to enter a USSA Air Identification Zone north of Alaska.

Ao when we want to intrude on another countries airspace that is "Defending our right to free navigation," but when another country does exaclty the same thing that is deemed to be a threatening and hostile act?

This foreign relations stuff is beyond my limited mental capacity. Time to go back to the Bar-B-Qued Fruit Bat.

US warplanes intercept Russian planes training in international airspace.

And no, they don't carry ICBM, maybe curise missiles but not Inter Continental missiles.

Of course it's propaganda, no need to report a non-event otherwise but of course the people have to be terrorised to go along with warmongering and spending.

Supersonic cruise missiles are a core part of Russian military strategy. They could launch before they were even in the ADIZ. So could russian subs, for that matter.

Safe to say this is a pure propaganda ploy (on both sides.) The rooskies used to do this all the time in the 70s/80s during the cold war.

@IridiumRebel, always a fan of your sober postings.

Me a ZH addict has a very personal question on you.

ZH made my original addiction into a disease.

Can`t possibly stay away from the sobriety that ZH consumption delivers to my mind. No need to stray from ZH
my initial condition stays the same, just no venue but I always needed to stay charged up or the lack thereof.

Cut beer to Zero for two month and lost 15 pounds.

Red wine too to go from 01/10/14 onwards. Will I survive ?

Can`t join any local AA or I would loose all special permits and local standing. Self purge is what is on my mind.

No friends on this soul question, anonymous advice from peer
ZH attitude wanted.

Can you join an AA outside of the immediate area? It is supposed to be anonymous even if you were spotted. There are hotlines as well and some online stuff like Alcoholics in Action that have meetings, but in person is best. I have a former sponsee doing "The Midwest Center" that seems to help him. White knuckles lead to further pain so some outside help is necessary. AA was my way, but there are other ways. That's my suggestion and good luck. You can become my contact here as well and we can "get stuff off the chest" via the anonymity of ZH.

Looks like a little pay back, we toy with them, then they toy with us. In reality America has few military options in Russia's backyard unless it has the backing of a full and enthusiastic NATO and that is very unlikely. Europe has reason to be unexcited about a possible long and expensive conflict. While still trying to recover from a recession Europe would face fuel shortages and a massive spike in the price of natural gas.

Putin a great deal of leverage. Don't hold your breath for Putin to back-off or back-down, he has put down his marker and is now playing both Obama and Kerry for fools. If things really heat up the Russians will not rollover as other armies have when America approaches. More on this subject in the article below.

ExxonMobil ‘winding down’ Arctic well, complying with US, EU sanctions on Russia

http://www.ogj.com/articles/2014/09/exxonmobil-winding-down-arctic-well-...

ExxonMobil Corp. released a statement that the company is complying with all US sanctions on Russia after news reports that the operator had halted operations on its first arctic exploration well—University-1—in Russia’s Kara Sea.

By halting the well, the analysts noted, “it appears that Exxon was unable to find a creative ‘workaround’ to last week’s tightened US and [European Union] sanctions on technology transfer to Russia.”

in its statement, the supermajor said, “The US Treasury Department, recognizing the complexity of the University-1 well and the sensitive Kara Sea arctic environment, has granted a license to ExxonMobil and other US contractors and persons involved to enable the safe and responsible winding down of operations related to this exploration well.”

This has been the US Air Force for decades. B-58 Hustler. Insanely expensive to fly and maintain.  F-111 by McCain, LBJ and Obama's biggest supporter also big AIPAC member.

I had a prof who was an engineer for Lockheed. He said you needed an umbrella in the hangar of a C-5A because they spewed hydraulic fluid.  B-1.  Cool and fast plane but they rarely flyit or use it becauseo fthe cost and maint.  I am sure B-2 is the same.   Why did they destroy the YF-117?  Arms limitations?  More like stealth is a scam.

Actually, it is the avionics.  The better a warplane's avionics (on-board electronics), the better its ability to survive and fight.  And it has been that way for decades.

Pierre Sprey has said that is false for fighters.   He said for 50 years the fantasy of fire and forget missiles at a distance has been the dream of the Air Force.  He said that is BS and they still have to dog fight.  Sprey helped co-designed the F-16 and A-10.    He said the F-35 is junk and the F-22 is only marginally better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxDSiwqM2nw

If avionics is the case then now it is software.  The Russians have very good software programmers. The F-35's software is still not done.  I would guess MIC including Lockheed Martin uses a lot of Indian H1-Bs.  They use Chinese parts or grey market Chinese parts.

They tried to ignore dogfighting when they built the F-4 Phantom. but had to rethink that, so they strapped a machine gun pod on for dogfighting.

I guess that worked until the airframe could be retrofitted with machine guns, but today most engagements happen over the horizon.
