I'm not sure about your logic. It is like saying "why should we punish criminals, because if it weren't for these *criminals*, it would be some other criminal groups to take their place." It's estimated that about 1 million Jews died during WW I along with about 50 million Europeans. The deaths in the labor/concentration camps were mostly the result of a wartime triage scenario. Resources were used for the war effort, not to keep the prisoners well fed and healthy. Like with the South and its prisoners of war.

In the book "The Arms of Krupp", if I remember correctly, German industrialists went to the Party and said something to the effect, "for Pete's sake, don't just kill them. Let us use them for slave labor. That labor can help the war effort". The Party said yes, and many of the concentration camps were work camps in which the workers were non-German slave laborers who, yes, were slowly worked, starved, and frozen to death. Why waste food and energy on slaves, especially when you don't like them? And I think Jewish people WERE especially targeted, but I'm not sure - and I don't know where to look for the numbers on - how many Jewish vs. how many non-Jewish people died in the camps. Certainly there were many more non-Jewish than Jewish people in Poland, Czechoslavakia, Yugoslavia, captured portions of Russia, ad nauseum. So, since so many people died in the camps, I would call it a holocaust. But I have no idea whether I would say it was just a Jewish holocaust.
