Jack Ma: If You're Poor At 35, You Deserve It

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Zach Ho via VulcanPost.com,

You are poor because you have no ambition.

Jack Ma: Before I founded Alibaba, I invited 24 friends to my house to discuss the business opportunity. After discussing for a full two hours, they were still confused — I have to say that I may not have put myself across in a clear manner manner then. The verdict: 23 out of the 24 people in the room told me to drop the idea, for a multitude of reasons, such as: ‘you do not know anything about the internet, and more prominently, you do not have the start-up capital for this’ etc etc.

There was only one friend (who was working in a bank then) who told me, “If you want to do it, just try it. If things don’t work out the way you expected it to, you can always revert back to what you were doing before.” I pondered upon this for one night, and by the next morning, I decided I would do it anyway, even if all of the 24 people opposed the idea.

Jack Ma founding members

When I first started Alibaba, I was immediately met with strong opposition from family and friends. Looking back, I realised that the biggest driving force for me then was not my confidence in the Internet and the potential it held, but more of this:  “No matter what one does, regardless of failure or success, the experience is a form of success in itself.” You have got to keep trying, and if it doesn’t work, you always can revert back to what you were doing before.

As with this quote by T.E. Lawrence – “All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream in the dark recesses of the night awake in the day to find all was vanity. But the dreamers of day are dangerous men, for they may act their dreams with open eyes, and make it possible.”

jack ma serious

Jack Ma: People lose out in life because of these 4 reasons:

  1. Being myopic to opportunity
  2. Looking down on opportunities
  3. Lacking understanding
  4. Failing to act quickly enough

You are poor, because you have no ambition.

Ambition is living a life of great ideals; a magnificent goal in life that must be realised.

In this world, there are things that are deemed unfathomable, but there is nothing in this world that cannot be done. The depth of one’s ambition determines the potential of one’ future.

By way of example:

The Story of Juliet Wu Shihong – one of China’s first-generation professional managers, who gained success by working her way up the ranks from a cleaner, a nurse, a marketing executive, through self-education and learning on the job.

Juliet Wu Shihong

She had been the general manager for the world’s most famous multinational IT groups’ Chinese branches (Microsoft 1985-1998; IBM 1998-1999). She is also China’s first successful international corporate executive to join the executive team of a domestic private firm. Wu was seen as a symbol of the new generation of business executives that China has produced in its economic reform and opening-up.

When Wu started off in a big company working from the lowest ranks, her daily job was to pour tea and sweep floors. Once, because she forgot her staff pass, the company’s guard stopped her at the door and denied her entry. She explained to the guard that she was indeed one of the company’s employees, and that she had merely left the building for a short while to purchase office supplies.

Despite her pleas, the guard still did not allow to enter. As she stood at the gate, she watched as those of similar age to her, but smartly dressed in business attire walking through without having to show their passes.

She asked the guard, “Why are these people allowed through without producing a pass?” The guard dismissed her coldly nonetheless.

That was the turning point for Wu – she felt great shame, her self-esteem trampled on.

She looked at herself, dressed in shabby clothes and pushing a dirty push cart. Looking back at those dressed in smart attire, her heart felt a deep ache from the sudden realization of the sorrow and grief from being discriminated. From that moment, she vowed never to allow herself to be shamed like this again, and to become world-famous.

Since then, she used every opportunity to enrich herself. Every day, she was the first to arrive at work, and the last one to leave. She made every second count, spending her time learning the ropes. Her efforts soon paid off; she was made a sales representative, and quickly progressed to being the regional general manager of this multinational company in China. Wu did not possess strong academic qualifications, and was revered as the ‘Queen of Part-timers’. Subsequently, she assumed the position of GM of IBM China. This is the Wu Shihong, the heroine in China’s business circle.

Juliet Wu Shihong

If not for the incident, Wu Shihong would not have had the ambition to become rich, and her life would have taken a very different path then.

Lessons...

  • You are poor because you do not have the desire to become successful.
  • You are poor because you lack foresight.
  • You are poor because you cannot overcome your cowardice.
  • You are poor because you lack the courage and determination.
  • With ambition you can overcome all inferiority and maximise your potential!
  • With ambition you can persevere, continuously learn new things and strive for perfection.
  • With ambition you can defy all odds, and create miracles when others daren’t.

No matter how poor your family is, do not doubt your own abilities and lose sight of your ambition.

  • When your family deems you worthless, no one will pity you.
  • When your parents do not have money to pay the medical bills, no one will pity you.
  • When you are beaten by your competitors, no one will pity you.
  • When your loved ones abandon you, no one will pity you.
  • When you have not accomplished anything by the time you are 35, no one will pity you.

Go big, or go home. Otherwise, you’re wasting your youth.

I hope he is a student of history, in this case, the 1990's.  The era that created internet millionaires and billionaires with many wealthy beyond belief on paper.  So many jobs created during that time, attributed to the luckiest dude on earth, Bill Clinton.  Yet before he left office and the year 2000 came along the Nasdaq had been cut in half and continue to lose another 80% afterwards.   95% of those new companies and their uber rich founders along with all the employment worth trillions on paper were only temporary entities with temporary jobs.  The companies were bankrupt, the employees were jobless and most stockholders living quite large at the time were left wondering WTF as they were suddenly broke as they stubbornly refused to turn paper profits into reality many doing so in order to avoid paying taxes on all those "profits".  Profts that turned into losses and luckily for them, their biggest worry, paying taxes ended up being unfounded concerns.  Whew!!

They dodged that bullet as did Clinton being few seem to remember the entire history of that wonderful economy and all those temporary jobs he is still credited for creating.  Also disappearing was that mythical notion of balanced budgets and zero deficits as the accounting assumed revenues that never materialized.   Well at least he did get all that tobacco money from the groundbreaking lawsuits.   Anyone know whatever happened to all the funds from that historic fine?   Now that the government is again engaged in historic fines it would be kind cool if there was a detailed trail of what happens with all that money.

Go and explain that to people working in sweatshops or in mineral mines somewhere. Sure, the people in this example are ambitious but they were not born in a civil war torn place in Africa with rampant murder, rape and other crimes.

What about the Americans of the 1770's -1780's, 1812-1814, 1860 - 1877, etc.?

Mon, 09/22/2014 - 15:14 | 5244100 Joe A
Joe A's picture

You mean the Americans are exceptional? Cause that is what this guy thinks of himself as well. Sure, there is something to be admired: they made it to the top. But they would be more admirable if they were modest about it and go easy on the 'exceptionality thing'. For every person that makes it to the top there are a 1,000 or 10,000 that don't while they were just as ambitious, bright and what have you as they are. But somewhere they had bad luck, made a otherwise good decision at a unforeseeable bad moment or had their factory wiped out by a hurricane. Cause life is not linear and is arbitrary and random. And at one moment you can't make it big anymore without doing shady deals, make compromises or abuse people. Some of the Americans you talk about did exactly that: they made a successful business but they first had to wipe out the natives and bring the black folk from Africa to do their dirty work. Get my point?

And there are plenty of 35 years old who made it big otherwise: they save lives, cure diseases, bring happiness to people's lives, etc. One can be financially poor but emotionally rich. But in a world where happiness is increasingly tied to money that doesn't count for a lot of folk. And that leads to neurosis, depression and what have you.

HOGWASH.. That stupidity (both the remark and the ideal) "If You're Poor At 35, You Deserve It" is based on the erroneous mindset that that to be rich and powerful is the ultimate aim of the human experience. Mmm, not a shred of humility there.

In fact it promotes all the bad stuff.. doing whatever it takes to get to the to of the heap... not the way I want to live. While getting ahead and bettering ourselves IS a good thing... promoting narcissistism, pathological, megalomaniac is hardly the way to go. I mean, case in point, Look at what we got in the White House now... maybe (maybe but doubtful) he started out with good intentions.. but turned into one of the most bought off America stabbing, Constitution stomping assholes of our time.

Very interesting to read this thread. Hardly anybody has touched on the possibility that some of us don't want to be rich- in fact I am quite happy being relatively poor. So it is assumed, I suppose, that we are to covet Jack- his vast intelligence, his vast ego, and his vast lack of humility.

A couple of observations. Rarely, have I ever seen someone with great wealth say something like- I don't deserve this or I simply got lucky or being rich is actually a giant pain n the ass. Instead, the ultra rich are quite boastful, think of themselves as superior to everyone else, and then acquire a messiah complex- well if I quit eating shark fin soup- I will save the planet. That's what God, Allah, or whatever else designed. Think Al Gore and saving the planet from global warming. Think Bill Gates and his pledge to give away half of his wealth to the "underprivileged." Think Warren Buffett's, the Oracle of Omaha, who has a God bestowed opinion on everything.

I am in awe at the lack of conscious thought, lack of humility, and the vast assumption that we all want to be like them.

So do I have to be an asshole to be rich? It's not required but it certainly helps.

This kind of advice deliberately ignores that money is measurement backed by murder, and taking advantage of economic "opportunities" inside of the established social pyramid systems means working hard to drive social polarization and destruction of the natural world. Scrambling up the levels of the established social pyramid systems only makes them overall become worse, not better! Since the monetary systems are EVIL ENFORCED FRAUDS, making "money" inside of those systems drives the human species towards committing collective suicide, as attempting to privatize the planet is tending to kill it!

The truth hurts.

Judging by the haters replying, he struck a very truthful chord.

In an opulent society that exists in the modern world, where the poor live beter than kings and pharaohs of old did.......the tendency to become socialist, with collective responsibility and individual  freedoms and rights to the community largess......this is what you get.

The only thing one has to do is NOT fuck their lives up completely in their 20s. Just get through the 20s broke but intact.

The 30s is when you should be launching.

Get a clue millinials. And stop voting for those that promise you other people's shit for free in return for your support.  That ship won't ever be coming in.

Yeah, I made a similar point just above, Salsipeudes. I have lots of ambition, but NOT to become "successful" inside of a political economy dominated by enforced frauds, which is strip-mining the planet as fast as possible!

For rich, old people, keeping their system going until they die may make sense. However, for poor young people, their future is fucked, because there is NO long term plan regarding getting "rich" on the basis of the established social pyramid system making "money" out of nothing to "pay" for strip-mining the planet! The younger you are, the more you are being lied to, cheated and robbed by the political system you were born into, whereby "money" is made out of nothing as debts in order to "pay" for turning natural resources into garbage and pollution as fast as possible. GETTING "RICH" INSIDE THAT SYSTEM IS BASED ON RUNAWAY ENFORCED FRAUDS, WHERE THE THE LONGER THE TERM ONE LOOKS INTO THE FUTURE, THE WORSE THE PROBABLY CONSEQUENCES BECOME!

There are no reasonable doubts that those are the FACTS, while those who do not like those FACTS will surely continue to deliberately ignore THAT. After all, the basic problem is that the political economy in China is creating even more "money" out of nothing than the USA, to "pay" for what they are doing, which has NO longer term plan, since there is NO good plan for what to do after the natural resources are high-graded to hell.

P.S.

Of course, 9/11 was an inside job, and here is a recent link regarding how and why the monetary system can not be separated from the military system:

http://www.veteranstoday.com/2014/09/21/making-you-an-agent-of-the-state/

Making You an Agent of the State

By Preston James, September 21, 2014.

Ever since the First Gulf War, US Government Institutions hijacked by City of London Rothschild controlled World Zionists have been doing everything feasible to create as many “Agents of the State” in America as possible. ...

The folks who control the US Government (USG) and the Major Mass media have created and dispensed a phony, Big Lie “War on Terror Narrative” to transform as many Americans into Agents of the State as possible. Those who refuse to become “Agents of the State” and speak out against the USG, Homeland Security, the Patriot Act or the National Defense Authorization Act in any way will or express unhappiness with the Militarization of the American Police become officially labelled Domestic Terrorists, potential Domestic Terrorists and will be treated as “Enemies of the State.” ...

This “War on Terror” Narrative is perhaps the Greatest Psyop ever in the History of the World and was designed to make you and everyone else in America an Agent of the State, their State since they hijacked America in 1913. And since they deployed their 9/11/01 Gladio-style, inside-job, False-Flag attack with the help of a select set of Dual and Triple Citizen Traitors, Traitors in the JCS, USAF, NORAD and the FAA, they have been pulling out all the stops to inculcate the phony narrative of the War on Terror in as many naive American dupes as possible.(1)

In order to fully understand this Massive Psyop, the Phony War on Terror False Narrative Big USG Lie, it is necessary to ask and answer many questions about what it is comprised of. But first folks must understand that the Major Mass media has been hijacked as in your enemy, a major Mind-kontrol tool promoting Secret Shadow Government Psyops against you and the American people, designed to take away all your Constitutional Rights in this phony, synthetic War on Terror. ...

Essentially all Americans are being forced to make a choice, either become an Agent of the State, or you will be considered an Enemy of the State. ... The War on Terror Narrative is designed to bifurcate the American People into two groups: Potential and actual Enemies of the State and “True Believers” in this Phony War on Terror narrative ...

It isn't a case of be like Jack Ma, or ask for other people's shit for free as the only two choices.

One can choose to work enough to pay the bills, not be greedy, not go into debt, live modestly, and have a very rich and full life.

Those of you, and you are in this group, that only equate success with money, there isn't really much to discuss. You have a value that others don't, and you thnk others are socialist, irresponsible losers.

The fact is that I came to the conclusion that people like you are losers, they simply don't know it.

I have nothing that you want, but what you don't realise is that you have nothing that I want as well.

Enjoiy your life. I don't want it, I don't envy you, and I don't want your money. I have better things to do.

Classic neoliberal perception. Tends to end obsolete. As if we all have the chance to be rich. How on earth could all get rich in the absence of inequality? In the capitalist world some people are rich exactly because the majority is poor. In today's global neoliberal dictatorship - far from classic capitalism - with the banking parasites on top, inequality drives the system in order the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer continuously. Got it Jack?

Hey Jack, this is for you. Take a taste what it means to be poor:

I don't think so.  They have no energy to fuel (oil, gas) their industry.  They have to rely on import for fuel.  Meanwhile, the USA will probably go into depression for a while but will be able to recover slowly because we can still produce fuel.  Manufacturing will slowly return once protectionism is imposed after collapse.  Afterall; the founding fathers of this nation were protectionist.  As George Washington said beware of foriegn alliances.

Protectionism is not what the Founders meant. Protectionism and tariffs is isolationist. Founders meant no UN and ZATO- like things. Tariffs only raise prices domestically and in zero sum fashion benefit crony businesses. The problem is not liberalization of trade; the problem is the petrodollar has numbed many here from the reality that they are living beyond their means, and foreigners keep this mentality that the world 'needs' USD to facilitate trade when the dollar is the biggest drag on actual sound trade where goods and services are traded for goods and services, not fiat.

This was interesting. It made me think over my past 48 years.

The chinese woman who was disrespected let that shit go to her head too much.

She has missed out on the rest of life, in exchange for a career that owns her ass.

been there done that myself so i am not judging, just calling it like it is..

For some folks it pays off, but at every firm there are always multiple ones competing for that advancement, and frankly its not usually equitable how the reward is passed around.

Some who deserve it get passed up, some who do not rise very far very quickly. Life it not fair . Please note its not a complaint, a statement of acceptance. its just the way it is.

I left the corporate life at 46 when we had our first child. Its ok, my ceiling at the time had been reached anyway.

I am poor now becasue i choose NOT to be the first into the office and last to leave ANYMORE.

But the highest and most prestigious title I have ever earned in this life is from a little two year old girl.

Becasue of her; I am now richer in heart than I ever was in material things.

She calls me "Daddy".

I bet if you emailed Ma with a 3 year business plan for a new start-up he will be just as pessimistic to you as those naysayers he describes.

Lets be honest, good ideas are a dime a dozen , very few good ideas make it to fruition, because the environment is not very conducive to change.

Ma fails to see his success for what it really is, a fluke and lucky timing.

There simply isn't enough pie to go around for everyone to be rich, so even if everyone was ambitious smart and hard working you will still have 70% of people under the poverty line because of the mechanisms at play within this completely broken monetary model we operate under.

I'm not saying its impossible,  just improbable for a significant portion of the population to reach such levels of affluence.

Because of our monetary system the next would be Einstein,  Steve jobs or bill gates is probably out there flipping burgers trying to survive instead of inventing and discovering.

The fact that the banks, businesses and government have all turned their back on this once great nation is not helping either. . .  Lets face it none of the for-mentioned give a rats ass about this country , they just want to burn it all down for profit.

All Americans need is a chance and for these criminal banks to stop breathing down their neck for a change, to stop kicking them while their down and give them a chance to get back up.

Its like the banks and govt are scarred what would happen if Americans could prosper freely

Some on this site say they had to sacrifice their soul in the corporate world to make money.  Some companies are like that.  I worked in management until I was 35 at which time I decided that it was not the life I wanted.  I move across the country and became independent and almost self-sufficient.  The company was so shocked that it sent an HR person across the country to do an exit interview because nobody would dare give up that life.  I am not rich and I am not poor but I am satisfied and happier with my life.

I suggest that if you are not where you want to be - get up and find it - you would be surprised at how many opportunities await you.

Just to give you an idea that transitions are not always easy, I tell you what my first learning experience in living off the land was like.  I met an old Swiss farmer who I had asked to give me some idea of what it took to farm - he agreed and promptly sent me out to a large field that he wanted to plant and told me to pick the rocks - two weeks and three fields later I was in much better shape and fully understood what it took to be a farmer.

Jack Ma is a jerkoff materialist that likes to pontificate like the Pope!

May the air pollution in China prevent him from opening his mouth to breathe in the near future.

materialist have a point, i wouldn't disparage
them on his account. the jerk off and pontification
observation i agree with.
.
humans who identify with the hierarchy of top
predator should be humbled by the natural human
fact that they create, by their mere existence,
the vacuum that must be and call itself resistance,
defiance and rebellion. the enemy, their disrespected base.
crazy, ephemeral, insane delusion and dilution.
j.m. is riding the high horse. the statues comport
to a symbolic hove placement/orientation with respect
to the ground and the manner of death of the rider.
the high horse, the general riders.

In china, such attitude is about average.....openly materialistic & no grip concerning common sense & decency.

I've seen worse guys in college.....win at all costs regardless of cheating, destroying the enviroment, lying, deceiving, stealing, blaming on others, etc.....

I remember Tom Vu, he was fuckin' hilarious, on his yacht, wearing his Members Only jacket and surrounded by a bunch of blonde bimbos.

"your friends are loosers, get rid of them, you listen to ME, I make you rich!

come to my seminar."

Fuck Jack Ma, he's just another rich asshole with a chip on his shoulder.  Don't care if he has to work his ass off and do whatever else it took for him to get to where he is now, that kind of shitty attitude is lame.

Like Tony Montana, somebody should have just given him his fortune, maybe then he would would be a nicer person today.

Carmina Burana lyrics, 5th verse

"Once I was seated

on Fortune's throne,

crowned with a garland

of prosperity.

In the bloom

of my felicity

I was struck down

and robbed of all my glory."

Ma don't know Jack!

The Wheel of Fortune spins round! Here, enjoy!

  • You are poor because you do not have the desire to become successful.
  • You are poor because you lack foresight.
  • You are poor because you cannot overcome your cowardice.
  • You are poor because you lack the courage and determination.

Correction. I got all that shit. I am poor because I decided to become a songwriter who didn't write radio-friendly pop songs.

To be, or not to be...that is the question.

He's not being a very good Communist. I'm going to have to report him to the Politburo.

And why don't we refer to the Chinese as Red Commies as we did the Russians!

How is that a company from Communist China is having the biggest IPO in the largest capitalistic nation in the world?

1. Make others myopic by lying on your financial statements
2. Lie at your every opportunity
3. Confuse everyone else by concealing your dodgy business practices
4. Obtain money as fast as you can from the people you are planning to dupe

"The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully:  And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits?  And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.  But God said unto him, 'Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?'"

The very succsessful and rich to a person are sociopeths without empathy, and they cannot conceive of any other values to live by as being valid.

They are winners. If you don't do what they do, you are a loser. There are no degrees or types of success to them.

I don't care about these assholes any more - I manage to be left alone, and that's all I desire.

I know how to avoid these types, it's quite easy.
