Citi Previews How It All Ends, In One Chart

Tyler Durden's picture

It doesn't get any simpler than this chart showing global monetary policy response to "secular stagnation", i.e., the situation the world finds itself in right now.

A few notes. The reason there is secular stagnation is because the economy crashed after the last, housing, bubble (which itself was a response to the dot com bubble preceding it) reached epic proportions and burst.

So what is going on now is merely the global central bank cartel reflating the next bubble, and final, bubble.

Central banks may be doing so with good intentions, "to get back to full employment", but the bottom line is the entire world is now gripped in what is without doubt the biggest asset bubble in history.

The good news: everyone will be able to top-tick the bubble and sell just before everyone else sells...

And yes, we admit the title was a little misleading: Citi shows us where we are, but it does not chart what happens after the final bubble bursts. We leave it to readers' imaginations to fill in the blank.

Last Sunday I saw three little kids watching a piece of wood that was floating in the surface of a lake near Atlanta. I asked them why they were so intent in watching it. And they told me that they wanted to know why it was moving on its own, despite the lake water being completely still around it. As any adult, concerned with all my problems, I had paid no attention to that.
When I look at the piece of wood, I note that they were correct, it was moving on its own, even generating waves that propagated into the water.

It doesn't really end.  The bubble probably won't pop.  Instead, we'll have a Japanese-style endless recession.  I can't see the DOW getting out of the seventeen-hundred range.  But it can stay in that proximity for a long long time.  Slow endless deflation is my call.

You can do what I did. I took my wife to a gun show. There, with some guidance, she got really well armed. Then she learned how to use her new arsenel, and kearned well, to include close combat tactics and long range shooting. Now, anyone who fucks with her is either ignorant of her capabilities or crazy.

She has also taken up bird hunting and has become quite proficient. we will always have fowl to eat, no matter what.

I say it's quite cool when we go to the range and she unpacks one of her guns. Someone nearby can always be heard to say :Nice gun!"

Continue from previous comment:
So the question of why and how became acute in my mind. Then I noted that the movement was from having a V curve in the middle of the piece being above the water or being below the water surface. And then it struck me, I was in the presence of a bistable system. I type of chaotic system characterized for having only two attractors, both metastable (or extremely unstable), therefore, any infinitesimal perturbation in the surface of the water would trigger the displacement of one state towards the other, and there I was observing the most complex type of dynamic behavior that eludes most economists and explaining it to 9 year old kids.
The economy is much worse than this system.

Third and last part:Continue from previous comment:
The economy is much worse than this system.
Why? Simple, because it is a much more complex dynamic system with multiple attractors, and yes going back to the stone age is one of them. Full of non-linear feedback loops, and multistable systems, were there are multiple equilibrium states that are possible and you can switch from one to the other in no time.
Attempting to control this type of system is a loss loss proposition, you will loose control, the key is that you can not determine the timing of that loss, since that is infinitely dependent on the initial conditions of the regional system you are considering.
I really hope that economists went more often to lakes to observe nature and its behavior, it'd teach them a lot about the dynamics of what they are trying to control.

Because it's an open system. If it were a closed system, the number of users would affect the amount of power required to service those users... the available power would be divided among the users. one obvious reason (other than stupid possibiltiies such as living things on or underneath the wood)

is that-----

a) there are subsurface waves on the lake you cannot see on the surface

b) the woods composition absorbs and radiates heat from the water and air in a different manner than surrounding water. this effectively means the wood is colder or hotter than the surrounding water and the heat differential can be a source of motion .

c) the wood can aborb water below its water line while capillary action to the top of the piece of wood floating above the water line slowly changes the weight distribution of water within the wood itself. the wood is thus not in a stead mass state. the dry above water part of the wood can get heavier as capillary action brings water upward. this weight can then destablisize the woods orientation as a floating object.

of the wild card.

d) the wood can be a monster and not a piece of wood.

that's all i got so far.

"Central banks may be doing so with good intentions, to get back to full employment"

Bullfuckingshit! Central banks aren't printing out of the goodness of their hearts. They are printing because we are at the end game of of monetary expansion and they are desperatly trying to fight off a deflationary collapse. They will continue to do so even if it means the destruction of the currency. We are witnessing the final wealth transference upward before they try to transition us into a new world currency. All they need is a good crisis........

Agreed with everything up to "new world currency".  That is a western plan.  Places like China, India, certainly Russia, want either no part of it, or they want to be in charge of it.  The west is in decline.  They don't get to rule the world by burning down their own house this time.

I agree with you there. I believe the western powers had a vision of how things would go, but Russia and China balked at the plans, and now TPTB are trying to pressure them to fall in line by building military bases around them. We are truly living Orwell's 1984. It's extraordinary how big a visionary he was.

We are well and truly fucked. Bottled in on both sides. Ignore the outdated "socialist" and "communist" terminology in the article; the Birchers can't smell the fascism, not that there is much difference.

Shit, shit, shit, shit and more shit. The war is planned, Putin is one of the planners, his moderate and reasonable tone in the face of ever more shrill denunciation indicates not that he is moderate and reasonable but that he is one of the planners and angling for a favorable position for his group.

Extremely depressing but must read, look at it but have alcoholic beverages handy. There are no good guys at all ...

Kissinger is 91 and David Rockefeller is 99. They wanted to have the NWO in place before they died, and they won't miss by much.

"If you want a vision of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face - forever." - George Orwell

I agree with all you have said.  And I think all of what is happening now was not 'planned' and probably not even thought up ahead of time by TPTB.  I think this is all happening as knee-jerk reactions to whatever just happened previously.  It's human greed and fear coming full circle into its end game.  The end game is chaos and collapse of human financial empires.  We will revert back to the mean eventually.

Change your perspective:

Did Japan implode after their real estate bubble burst? Nope. 25 years later it still being held together by lies and ducttape, and in the meantime the financial warpage (interest rates -> carry trade) allowed TPTB to reel in large financial gains. Has it worked for the status quo maintainers? Yes, it has worked for 25 years and counting (what happens next? who cares. we got ours!)
