Special Issue:   Transnational Lesbian Cultures

This article examines the music and performance of Meshell Ndegeocello,
arguing that they are part of a cross-Atlantic conversation that pushes
the boundaries of Black feminist thought on masculinity and desire. From
the time of her debut album in 1993, Ndegeocello has resisted
categorization both in her public personae and in her music.
Ndegeocello's refusal to be restricted in her stage performance and in
her musical expression has created a rich text through which to read
Black female masculinity. Her work has been particularly productive in
rethinking (Black) feminist couplings of patriarchy with male anatomy.
Ndegeocello's music challenges any one representation of female
masculinity, mixing critiques of masculine privilege and violence with
celebrations of pleasure and pansexual desire.

Ebonics is a must have in this modern globalized world. Do not go into corporate life without ebonics on your side. Skills in ebonics make YOU, a value added product for any potential employer. Indeed, your skills in ebonics can move your application to the top of the pile. Ebonics is a distinct skill for the modern corporate world. Don't leave university without it!

I agree with the cartoon.  University is cool if you come out with a professional certificate.  But most of the majors are utterly fucking useless.  Learning for learning's sake is a dream of the rich.

Universities offer ZERO marketable skills.

You sit in lecture halls and take scantron multiple choice Yerkes-type tests where if you can memorize 70% of the information off the top of your head, you get a C.

Occasionally you'll get a professor who hates "multiple guess" and he'll assign you an essay that must be in the Schaffer method, only so he can grade it quicker.

With your bachelor's degree, you now know how to sit through boring lectures, take a Yerke's style scantron, and write Schaffer method essays. Those "skills" set you back $30,000 plus interest, plus that debt can not be defaulted on.

What employer in the real world wants you to guess off of the top of your head to get 70% of the answers correct? No one. It's stupid. It's not "cheating" to look at your notes... it's a necessity.

What employer has you type up a report in the Schaffer method? No one.

So these "skills" are not only useless, they actually waste 4 years of your working life, and set you back... for decades in student loan debt.

That girl in the comic could have been a fry girl fresh out of high school. Did that position for 6 months to a year. Get promoted to shift lead. Do that for 2 years. Then get promoted to manager, and learn business operations, deal with payroll, bookkeeping etc. etc. and she can apply for a better paying field and have that business management experience under her belt.

Whose moar likely to get hired into a management position? The college girl with zero work experience, or the fast food manager who wants to move into a higher paying industry?

9 times out of 10, the art history major with zero work experience.  Until big companies stop requiring a college degree and start rewarding wor ethic, there isn't a way to buck the system.

The 4 year degree as a method of determining who is a good investment of time and training is by far the most inefficient aspect of american society.  (Well, in all fairness, 13 years of public education directed at teaching only proficiency in basic skills isn't that far behnid.)

Fucking hell! I am glad that other than military training schools and a technical college for electronics and semiconductor physics, I never benefited from a liberal arts eduction! Anything along the lines of history, the arts, film, literature, foreign language, I am self taught and self read. Letting these universites get ahold of your mind is a terrible waste of good human brain matter.

Lesbians? I took a few college night classes in Foreign Language, and I saw plenty big lesbians study groups and lesbian study lounge, Black Lounge, Gay lounge, Asian study lounge, tansgender social lounge, handicpped black lesbians liberation demonstartion, lots of really neat shit. Sorry I never got chance to turn myself over for four to five years of that! My lose I guess, clearly I have suffered from lack of proper American university education.

LOL!  At my old univ, the education building was near our college.  I doubt most of these future "teachers" could read at a 6th grade level.  The bottom of the barrel is what ends up teaching in pubic schools.  Not all teachers but the union AA types are clueless and illiterate.  They all get phony masters degrees and PhD's paid for by the school system to increase pay and union dues.

"My environmental geology degree gets more embarassing by the day. But it was nice to learn that exponential growth will be the ruination of us all."

This statement shows everything that is wrong with the climatology scientists way of thinking.  They look at a small sample, 10 years, maybe 20 years of human existence, and fit it to an exponential growth formula that shows 10 trillion people on the planet in 50 years.  And then they look at people who actually earned degrees in science and mathematics and call them science deniers.

I got wise to this back in the sixties when Ralph Nader sent a team of Nader's Raiders (young idealistic law grads who worked all the hours God sent for $50 a week) to help out a strike of downtrodden secretaries in California.

The secretaries got $120 for a 40 hour week.

The magic word is hire an Asian HB1 visa person for your STEM job.  Used to be quite a few companies that would burn and churn their Engineers, that is they'd hire recent graduates and then dump the one that were getting up to the top or even the middle of the pay scale bracket.  Their explanation was that it kept their costs downs and their knowledge "fresh" now they just use graduates from from foreign schools. That and the decline of manufacturing due to tax and regulation policies has reduced the need for people who make real stuff.  )n the otherr hand if you need to build a coding plantation....

These are the folks that will be rendered redundant. Even with the construction slowdown we saw workers laid off, but before them were project managers, the real overhead. I think we fool ourselves to be concerned about the plight of fast food workers, when as always, it is the middle class that is under the real pressure. We just don't see it as such many times because these people are squeezed into the bottom wage earners group, just prior to be dissipated completely. The middle class forced into the lower class earner category further depresses those wages unless government steps in, through minimum wage or entitlement supports. Middle class wage earners are weaving the ropes for their own hanging. People need to be self employed, they need to own as much of their future as possible. Traditional employment is but another form of dependency.

This is the reality, a reality that is conveniently "swept under the carpet".

We ALL hear about those "successful Entrepreneurs" who have made the big time, but the tens of thousands who worked just as hard (often harder), but were discarded along the way never warrant a mention.

It is also interesting to examine the connections of those who succeed vs. those who fail. Family, and the support therefrom, is a very major contributor to a "successful" business, especially if "Family" has connections to the right politicians (the Gates family comes to mind here . . . .)

SERVICE ECONOMY?

Yesterday I went to a local cheese shoppe.  Yep, cheese shoppe (This is CA, folks)  All I wanted was a small flat plastic container of ground asiago cheese.  Took the dork about 20 minutes to get the cheese out, cut the fucking piece off, weigh it, trim the rind .... and then asked me if I wanted it in a plastic bag.  No, I want it in the small short plastic container at which I had already pointed.  Conversation with his boss.  Huh?  Meander about, consult with more senior cheese server.  Several looks of misery and pain.  Meanwhile another girl who'd fucked up the very same order about 3 months ago was there.  Last time when she waited on me she got half way through the fucking challenge and almost ready to cry excused herself for lunch to which her boos explained that she was sensitive.  I'd told him she's not sensitive, she's plain mean spirited, nasty, impolite and a pain in the ass.  So, yesterday's hero completes the mystery assignment of the year and asks about 15 minutes later, asks if there's anything else.  I wanted to say that I'd hope to get home in time for my birthday next September, but decided to just smile and pay.  Cost?  $3.55.  And 15 minutes of watching a clueless product of the CA educational system fail at grinding cheese.

Imagine how the employer of these "cheese rinds" feels. He may have earned a dollar profit on that cheese sale, but paid out $3 in wages to provide the service. Everyone bitches about prices going up but looking around it is hard to visualize how we can afford to pay any of us for what little most are willing OR able to do.

Knukles - You need to move to Brooklyn. Here the average barrista not only can create cool artwork in your cappacino but they have 5 other jobs that they work during the week (e.g app developer, local movie tech., skateboard designer, kamboucha marketing & bassist for a metal band), not to mention the other 2 jobs in the "underground" economy. They live stacked like cord wood in old warehouses in Greenpoint that still boast glowing toxic chemicals from the 70's. To offset the high rent they hold Raves on their rooftops and give a cut to the local police so that it won't get shut down.

Any Cali slackers who won't pull their weight or don't have adaptable skills get pushed out to the Bronx or join the "happy ending" massage dweebs.

Fucking Mexicans behind the counter, knew little English, and nothing about traditonal Swedish baked goods. Asked for Bullar, no clue, said Buns, no clue. I said small, round, white, pieces of baked bread, sor tof like McDonalds Burger buns, only thicker and smaller. What a fucking joke, manger was enlish literate, but from Salvador or Costa Rica.

Since January, our company of about 100 people has had the damndest time finding individuals to work for a starting wage of $12 an hour, no experience needed, health and dental benefits, vacation, quarterly bonuses, plenty of overtime, all in a casual office environment.  The catch is we need employees that can write sentences.  The American educational system and constant government welfare programs are most likely to blame for our lack of candidates.  So be it.

I see a couple of red flags here.  There's "office environment" and "plenty of overtime" with no mention of a union.  So, let me guess, mandatory unpaid overtime?  Also I don't see "paid" anywhere near benefits or vacation.  You don't suppose the "benefits" cost a single person $400/month with a $5000 deductible for prescriptions?  Gee, I wonder why you can't fill that job (if it even exists) at $12/hour.  In 2014.  There are grocery stores that pay almost as well with none of the stress of an office run by derps with a Master's in Bungling Assholery.

I worked in a company with quarterly bonuses once.  Leadership, particularly in my department, was nonexistent.  "My" bonus, and the rest of them, came entirely off the back of the sales reps.

You may be on to something. Sometimes what is NOT said, trumps the information that IS given. More here than meets the eye. $12.00 an hour after fed income taxes, social security, medicare, state, local, and health benefit premium. What are we talking disposable income per month? $1,200 >, this my fit for a two income lower middle class family. But much depends on what is expected in the way of labor and stress to get that $300 disposable income a week. Indeed, you can check grociers stress free for more than that take home pay.

These people calling job seekers dumb are actually upset about them being smart.  Rent alone takes almost every dime of a $9/hour job...before it goes up, or the township mandates services, or you decide not to starve naked in the dark.  And they can't figure out why A) the positions go unfilled, B) the "kids" working them still live with their parents, and C) saving for retirement isn't happening?

It's amazing what people refuse to think through when they want to profit off of another's labor.

I recently read a thread on a right-wing forum about why businesses aren't starting up.  Of course they blame the boogeyman.  It's not that he's blameless, it's that he's just one factor of many.  Usually I cite my own business that I started in 2012 but this time I mapped out the logistics of publishing a comic book.  I had a real license fee and real circulation numbers and real retail/wholesale prices.  The numbers plainly showed that the license fee alone consumed over 2/3 of the book's revenue.  But they wouldn't hear any of it and actually wiped out the entire post.  In the last two weeks I've been erased from more records than some of Stalin's enemies...
