Russia Holds Massive Military Drill: 155,000 Troops, 4,000 Tanks, 632 Aircraft, 84 Ships

Tyler Durden's picture

At what point is a drill more than just a drill? Maybe when it is so massive it could be confused for an invasion force, involving a mindblowing 155,000 troops, more than the armies of most sovereign nations, 4,000 armoured vehicles, 632 planes and helicopters and 84 vessels. Those are the staggering numbers taking part in the Vostok-2014 strategic exercises, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, and whose main priority is ti "demonstrate that the degree of combat preparedness in Russian troops has risen." One almost wonders why...

Photos via Itar-Tass:

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu praised the troops' combat readiness. Official results, however, will be summed up later

The drills are the final stage of a series of command and staff, and special exercises, drills, and surprise inspections in 2014

The troops drilled anti-landing defence in Primorsky and Kamchatka Territories

Missiles were fierd from the Varyag cruiser during the anti-landing defence operation

Aviation went on operational duty in Russia's Arctic zone

And the commentary from RIA:

The recent large-scale military exercise in Russia's Far East, Vostok-2014, demonstrated that the degree of combat preparedness in Russian troops has risen, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Tuesday.

The minister said that although "final conclusions are yet to be made," the troops involved have demonstrated efficient command and "a better degree of combat preparedness."

Shoigu said that the Vostok-2014 exercise is nearly complete. "This large-scale event of operational and combat training of the Eastern Military District was a logical continuation of an unannounced combat readiness check carried out on the orders of the Supreme Commander Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin," the minister said.

Addressing the servicemen who distinguished themselves in battle maneuvers in Cape Skalistii, Shoigu said: "You have actually demonstrated great skill, professionalism and the ability to ensure the military security of the Russian Federation in the eastern region."

The Vostok-2014 strategic military exercise in the Eastern Military District is taking place from September 19 to 25. The exercise was preceded by unannounced combat readiness checks.

One can only hope that the above "combat preparedness" is completely unrelated to what is now an invasion of sovereign territory by "US-led alliances" on a weekly if not daily basis.

There you go Putin/Saddam/Putin/Saddam.  That will scare them.  Say something like "Mother of all Battles Capability".

Shows like this often are to impress the citizens of the country to hide the fact that real weakness has been shown in the international playground.

Putin's bluff has been called so now he needs a show for those at home to hid behind.

The US/Israel will waste little time after Syria is destroyed to begin the process over again with Iran.  Only Iran the actions with Iran will be quicker.

I always like to set my stopwatch for Chinese action whenever the U.S./Syria/Russia/Ukraine maelstrom gets going.   They like to wait for these preoccupations to do business in their own backyard, free from the spotlight hassles of having to respond to Bagel and Ketchup.    Keep an eye out over the next few days for Chinese actions in the South/East China Sea.

It's not as if America's neocons and "realists" have been shy about their plan for global dominance.  I mean, you could lay out the theses of "The Grand Chessboard" to the average person, and, being well conditioned, they'll likely say something to the effect that you're a conspiracy theorist or need more tinfoil - but shit like "The Grand Chessboard" is buttressed by hundreds of policy papers and news paper articles.

PNAC called for a "new Pearl Harbor" to induce a ramp up in American Imperial forces - to remake the mideast for Israel - and the Office of Special Plans inside the Pentagon was deliberately set up, and stffed with Zionit Jews with close ties to Israel...  including some of the people who wrote "A Clean Break" which provided different reasons to attack Iraq for Netanyahu than they did for Bush in the "Rebuilding America's Defenses" paper:

http://www.voltairenet.org/article178638.html

But of course, only an "anti-Semite" would note that these neocons were Jews with deep ties to Israel and had repeatedly avowed what amounts to ultra-nationalism for a foreign country....   the facts of the matter don't matter...

The Russians drilling is just to try to catch the worst and most obvious problems they might face.

What I wonder is if the Russians are going to let Syria fall - obviously the US/Israel/Saudi/Qatar/Kuwait are going to use the manufactured ISIS crisis to destroy more of Syria's infrastruture and depose Assad.  Does Ivan let them?

And no - this is not to get a Qatari gas pipeline through, even if the Qataris think so.  Apart from a fractious war zone not being a good place to lay pipe - Israel is eager to sell gas from Leviathan and doesn't want the competition.

The Qatari pipeline angle isn't taken seriously by anyone I know and I'm alway puzzled to see it repeated here.  Not that I think it's gatekeeping for Israel, I just think it discounts the real interests of the Saudis and the Israelis...

Anyway - its not like the American people are going to protest wars declared by "liberals."   All you need is a controlled press and constant villification of brown people/Muslims and constant reminders of the eternal sacred victimhood of the Jews - then all you need to do is claim that every aggression is self-defense.

Worked, repeatedly, with abject, unequivocal war crimes in Gaza and Lebanon - sure there were some protests but in the US, UK, and Canada, where Jewish power is unrivalled, all protests against what were clear war crimes were Orwellized as "anti-Semitic."

Moral courage is wholly lacking - the courage to say that our black liberal savious is a puppet and a fraud working for Wall Street, the MIC and a cabal of Zionist Jews.  We have had dual citizen chiefs of staff, heads of homeland security, and 3 Jews in a row at the Fed - and unanimous votes in both housesto support Israeli war crimes in Gaza [and no, Hamas isn't the 'good guy' either] - and Jews give half or more of private donation to both parties, Jews are presidents of 3 of the 5 biggest news networks - and you don't think Israel has bought and paid for this government?

This is life under ZOG - endless war for Israel and banks and the people behind both whom quite simply wish to rule the world, and whom have little of the common human empathy almost all of you do.

I disagree.

It is for the Qatar-Syria pipeline.

The Prize in the Gas Wars is Europe.

The alternatives to the Qatar-Syria pipeline are:

- Iran-Turkey Pipeline

- The South Caucuses Pipeline

Of those alternatives, the first is a red herring by Russia's ally, Iran.  The second has already been met with at least two military invasions from Russia, and looks likely to result in Nuclear war.

The ENDS of the 'Syrian Adventure' is retaining Europe and reinforcing the EU.  The MEANS is the Qatar-Syria pipeline.  That means requires Syria to be flipped away from Russia.

Unlike Ukraine, or Georgia, who both border Russia, Syria is a battlefield closer to the US-EU power and further from Russia's.

Lacking geographic proximity, and a military power projection capability, Russia cannot directly invervene in a significant way.  Most particularly, while Russia has been provoked on her Western flank to such a degreee.

The fact of the matter is that this is called 'preparation of the battlefield'.   When you create a reason for an opponent's forces to be busy threatening Eastern Europe, they cannot simultaneously be in Syria.

The greater military issue is one of the ownership and controll of the Sea and Air Ports of Debarkation.   These do not favor Russia in Syria.

Hence, Russia's options are reduced.

Do I approve of any of this?  No, I do not.  This is geopolitical hardball amongst sociopathic people in governments.

Unlike most, I do not imagine the Russian Sociopaths to be morally superior to the US sociopaths.  I think that is a specious argument.  Whether frying pan or fire is your preference, they both will burn you the same.

The primary weakness with this strategy is the incompetence with which Washington is executing the 'Syrian Adventure'.  They'd have been better served to pay off the Shia, give them all the support they wanted, and more, until ISIS was forced back to Syria, and then had the UN declare a demilitarized zone along the proposed path of the pipeline.

All reasonable, but the assets Russia has tied up in Ukraine are a small proportion. What an exercise like this might do is blow the cobwebs off troops and assets not lately deployed.

It is absolutely not about Qatari pipelines.  It's about preventing the planned Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline [ISIS really got rolling soon after that agreement was signed].  The clusterfuck ongoing is not exactly conducive to laying pipe.

And, again, if you think Israel, and the US, which Israel largely controls, is going to do all this to help Qatar sell gas when Israel wants to sell gas - you ought to examine your premises.

Israel eyes pipeline to export natural gas to southern Europe

The Qatari pipeline angle, while true as a goal for the Qataris, is a cover for the Israeli pipeline.  Qatar is never going to run a pipe through Iraq and Syria to Europe.

But it's a great fake conspiracy theory to cover for the real one.

The US used to have a military policy set up to "win a war in one place" and "hold" in two other places.  Since that time, we have chopped our military (especially leadership) and have scattered what remains all over the globe.  A force such as the Russians, concengtrated into a single focused attack, could not be stopped by what remains of the US army.

Not sure why your post is being down-voted since you are 100% correct. The only thing you left out is how demoralized the U.S. military must be at this point. Thousands have died, and tens of thousands have been left with lifetime crippling injuries over the last 13 years. And for what? Is Iraq better off? Afghanistan? Libya? Syria? Are we winning the "war on terror"? Are we safer? Freer? Does the world have a better opinion of us? I'm just wondering when the field level officers are going to say "enough", and order their troops to stand down. Because at some point they have to ask themselves: "what are we fighting and dying for"? It sure isn’t for the American people, because last time I checked, the majority oppose our involvement in any of these places. I remember a time when that mattered.

Like I said before in other postings, the Russian Military is out gunned by the vast US Military machine, one funded at a level of all the world's militaries put together. But Russia may be out spent and out gunned, but Russia has only one goal for it's modern and fair sized forces, that is to defend their territory and bordes. This means Russia will fight on it's own territory, with interior lines of communication and with preplaced supplies in all critical areas, and with fortified and well placed defense lines. The USA and NATO, when they decide to attack, will need to ship everything to the border, and fight on foreign soil. America will still have to keep fores al across the globe to maintain it's control of hundreds of bases and dozens of countries, and also continue to move forces in it's drive to confront China.

Add this up, and on the Battlefield on Russia's border, the NATO gang will be bogged down by a military that has concentrated on development of defensive missile systems of all kinds. Spending their money on development and manufacture of modern missiles of all types, while the USA spends on foreign wars, retirement packages, four star health care for dependents, foreign military bases and a world wid fleet.

When NATO shows up for battle, under these circumstances, the Russian Federation stands an excellent chance of defeating the attacks with massive losses, And we know one thing about Western Militaries. They do accept battle if losses are in teh cards. I offer as evidence of Russian fighting morale the East Ukrainian Rebels, who, in August were out gunned and out numbered 10 to 1 and with no air power at all, defended themsleves and defeated numerous attacks of heavy armor and motorized infantry. If irregulars fight like that, does NATO plan to fight the proffession Army of the Russian Federation, backed by a massive tactical nuclear option?

If the only thing needed for a casus belli on Russia was to make people think Russia was at least guilty of supplying AA to rebels then the casus belli is theirs already. So where is the attack? Oh right, it was never about starting a war against Russia.

US / NATO is easy enough to understand. Undermine every effort of Russia to restore their former anything, be it "glory", empire, status in the world. The best way to do it is to remove their former sattelites from Russia clutches. Might be extremely sinister in some eyes but that is far from wanting to start a invasion of Russia.

Jack - NATO can not sustain air superiority over Ukraine, nor does it want to go toe to toe with Ivan near Russia's borders.

This makes NATO even more dangerous, and the stakes absurdly high.

The Russians know the name of the game.  They survived the Bolsheviks, then the Nazis, then the neo-Bolsheviks who currently largely control the US and UK.

This could very easily go nuclear - either of the false flag variety, or not.

the best bet is to read from a wide variety of sources.

Anyone complaining of "Russian propaganda" is too obtuse to grasp that he is literally thinking in propaganistic memes.

CNN, Fox may as well be telling you they are using brainwashing techniques.

Truly, they are.  ZH, RT, Voltaire, Consortiumnews, globalresearch, provide a counter balance.  This doesn't mean they have a full lock on "the truth."

But you better believe that it is the US/UK/Israeli axis which means most of all to enslave the world, and it is their peculiar lies which dominate msm.

"yet I can't hardly find it even mentioned in he daily newspapers here." Just as you can hardly find that almost a million people from Eastern Ukraine have been 'displaced'. The exercise might not be in the news but down at NATO's HQ they will be following it.

Some people here might take a pro Kiev stance or a pro Russia stance. I don't particularly like mr. Putin but I neither like his Ukrainian counterpart, the chocoligarch. What I like even less is the propaganda being spread by the Western MSM. This thing has nothing to do with bringing peace and democracy to the masses in Ukraine. Most ZH responders know that. Just stop telling lies and say what this really is about. I can live with the reason that Western dominance on the world stage must continue because I don't like a scenario where China and Russia run the show.

ah hah...nearly said zh..but let it go...your ego will take you back to this post.. you want to be relevant and make a difference... zh'ers know they aren't relevant to the debat either in the US or the the USSR.. we put forward "balance" via our extreme views compared to anythig you read in your MSM.

there is no answer to the male white supremacists who get turned on by game of thrones politics..but... lose your baggage.. russia does not have the answer, neither does the US.. neither does any current form of pigs at the trough government.. before you label people who express an unfettered opinion.. make sure your opinion is yours and not a regurgitation ..a mendication.. of what you are told.. i wil not say grow up..but really... please do

Here is the new Russian defense plan for the Crimea, the place NATO sought to take in the KIev Coup lsat winter, and failed.

" By 2020 Russia will have completed the following defense plan:

  • 86.7 billion rubles will be spend to modernize the Black Sea Fleet. Modernization plans include the deployment of ultra-modern Project 11356 frigates and top of the line Project 636.3 diesel-electric attack submarines.
  • A separate army group, similar to the one in Kaliningrad, will be formed and a bomber base will be created. The ground forces component will include one Air-Assault brigade, one Spetsnaz brigade, one Naval Infantry brigade and one Motor-Rifle brigade. Earlier, other sources spoke of one or two Airborne brigades, two or three Motor-Rifle brigades and one Tank brigades.
  • The Russian Air Force plans to deploy Tupolev Tu-22M3 “Backfire” bombers in Crimea which will be able to not only defend Crimea from any threat from the sea, but also destroy key components of the the US/NATO anti-ballistic missile system now deployed in southern Europe.
  • Finally, Crimea will be defended by coastal defense missiles, air defense systems and anti-ship cruise missiles.

In other words, Crimea will become a formidable defensive node, an unsinkable aircraft carrier if you want, and an ideal location for the power-projection of Russian military forces in southern Europe, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, the Middle-East, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

No wonder the US/NATO wanted it so badly."
