Welcome To The Oligarchy – US Leads The Developed World In Low Wage Jobs

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger of Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

In an apparent attempt to advise investors on how they can take advantage of America’s transformation into a neo-feudal oligarchy in a 50-page research report, Morgan Stanley has put together some very interesting charts.. We will be sharing many of them in the next few days but none is more telling and depressing than the one that shows how the U.S. leads the developed world in the share of low wage jobs...

Of course, this shouldn’t come as any surprise to readers. I have covered the death of America’s middle-class for many years now, most notably in the post from last summer: How Does America’s Middle Class Rank Globally? #27.

As the middle-class has been destroyed, and the poor placated temporarily by various government benefits, the oligarchy has had free reign to thieve and expand its wealth at a dizzying pace. The Federal Reserve fueled stock market has been a key tool in the process of keeping the 1% silent, as the chart below demonstrates:

While I can’t say the above is surprising, it certainly seems to confirm my prior contention that the stock market is merely: Food Stamps for the 1%.

U.S. policy is all about keeping the 99.9% quiet and distracted, while the oligarchs strip-mine the nation. Unfortunately, that strategy is working... for now!

My dream?  I'm looking for the minimum wage to be raised to fifteen dollars.  Then I'll get a job as a security guard and live comfortably in a trailer park.  Dare to dream.

Boy we were laughing so hard at those Chinese makin stuff for 2 cents an hour, while we were makin $5/hr. Looks like the elite were lying to us again, or how did so many others get so many dollars, as we are now laughed at around the developed world for our low wage problem.

You reap what you sow.

We are in the process of lowering a skilled trades worker to $20 / hr when someone can go push coffee and stand at the entrance of Walmart for $14.

All I have to say to companies is GO AHEAD pay everybody $5 / hr in the country - just don't be disappointed when you cannot sell trucks at $45,000 even if your willing to finance them for a couple DECADES.

And the EIA is reporting that the consumption of gasoline across all the markets in the US is about 21 million gallons a day, in 2006 it was 67 million gallons a day.  And if you lowered fuel that consumption will not come back. It's DONE - stick a fork in it, you killed your own market.

But big business doesn't think that way they will incessantly seek to make more money offer less service and peddle more worthless stocks.  It works great (until it doesn't) - and by then there will be no economy left to hold up your companies buh bye!

My wife works as a cleaner in the Adelaide CBD. From an old pay-slip I’ve still got in front of me from months ago there were three holidays in it, Good Friday, Easter Monday and ANZAC Day. For those days she was paid at 2.5 times normal pay of just on $22 an hour. So she got $55 an hour. So add another 8% for the holiday pay she will get added from this sum (4 weeks annual leave) and add another 12% for superannuation the employer must now contribute. A couple of percent at least for the sick day entitlements, and we are talking real money. By my sums, it totals to over AU$67 per hour, or US$57 an hour in pay and entitlements. Aussie businesses have not been wiped out by these rates yet so do you really think taking away the $7.50? an hour minimum will be good for society? What do you want ... a race to the bottom where they dutch auction off themselves to a bowl of rice or so a day for 16 hours labor perhaps?

Ahh, I personally know of businesses in Oz that are suffering badly because of this. They are forced to shut down during their busiest periods.

But that's unskilled pay. Now compare professional wagers and the US tops Oz by a long shot. Add in the COL delta and it's hard to beat the US for standard of living; that is if you have money, skill and ambition.

How do I know this? I left Oz 13 years ago when sparkys were getting payed more than engineers and the COL forced me to rent a shit hole and eat Maccas.

A lot of awards are freezing wages and they're not going up with inflation. It's seems the accepted way on both sides that Aussie standard of living will slowly drop. Even so, I can now get a loaf of bread for 85 cents and a litre of milk for 91 cents, so for one hours work on a public holiday my wife can get a shopping trolley overflowing with bread and milk. Do that anywhere else in the world!

Ok, so I've read this twice. What exactly is your point?

We all know that nanny government has given corporate America free reign to steal our labor. They are over in the Pacific Rim doing the very same thing- paying a dollar an hr. and acting like that's benevolent.

Unfortunately- the oligarchy has exported 50 million or so jobs over the last 15 years (nafta et. al.) and there's not a lot we can do about it. Unions were crushed years ago, the aristocracy bought and paid for our Congressional sociopaths in exchange for the highest tax rates in the world.

So what are we gonna do when nobody gives a fuck about the middle class? Not a goddamn thing. So we write comments on Zerohedge.

'My wife works as a cleaner in the Adelaide CBD  for a crony-capitalist harvester of state subsidies'. You forgot the bit at the end.

South Australia is the definition of a socialist state. These businesses you talk of are not real.

We run an accommodation business in Western Australia and we make it a point not to employ cleaners on Public holidays or Sundays. If we did, the cleaners would be making more out of the business than us.

Explain how please. In 10 words or less. Amuse me.

Note these are the stats pulled from World Bank, of course the only 5 countries who may/may not have non-doctored statistical agencies would stick out. Have the bank do the projections based on the black market wealth of the BRICS and that chart will have a big skew to it which would put the USA/NAFTA mid-pack when factoring for the slave effect.

No that would be catholic doctrine that birth control is blasphemy to god. Population growing expotentially and desperate for resources, will expand into every nook and cranny until it exhausts food, water or air.

Political borders are abstract concepts to a hungry family, right or wrong they will seek respite from desire, to sate themselves upon the economy of their neighbor is god's will; Mexico's manifest destiny.

A very good case can be made for the inverse of your argument, believe it or not.

The most densely populated countries (http://listverse.com/2007/08/30/top-10-densely-populated-nations/):

  1. Monaco
  2. Singapore
  3. Vatican City
  4. Maldives - outlier?

Not exactly cesspools of the struggling, uneducated and underresourced poor.

On the other hand, the least densly populated countries (http://www.mapsofworld.com/world-top-ten/world-top-ten-least-densely-pop...):

  1. Mongolia
  2. Namibia
  3. Australia - outlier?
  4. Suriname

whats not being said is how pathetic the OECD data really are and by what standard these jobs are low paying. a host of other factors like taxes come into play. reality is much more interesting.  is it some government schmuck's job to "create" employment or is it the people by their own free will working together to produce and create SOMETHING regardless of form - that's the work of the people.  government work is like fighing for peace, military intelligence, iraqui freedome and a host of other oxymorons.  government has to BORROW from the people by selling debt to give it back in the form of government jobs that are then again taxed back at 30% or so.  that's not a free lunch, that's usurous.

In China a skilled assembly line worker at GM Shanghai or VW will make about $5 US. That sounds pathetically low, until you realize that it buys a middle class lifestyle in China. That worker has job security, health insurance, a pension, savings, and owns a home. Income tax is very low and there is no property tax. America is just too out of whack with the cost of living vs. household income. The game is over.

If the cost of living would be allowed to equalize in the United States, the transition to part-time service work wouldn't be so painful. Housing should be 40% cheaper, but that would hurt rich asshole landowners. Until reality comes to housing, fuck all of you demeaning people asking for a livable wage. And double-fuck you to the elite cunts that have done this to our country!

If the cost of living would be allowed to equalize in the United States, the transition to part-time service work wouldn't be so painful.

So basically you're suggesting that lesser forms of work would be more easy to handle if the wage could drop.  The problem is that it really doesn't do so across the board and ends up making things worse.

Until reality comes to housing, fuck all of you demeaning people asking for a livable wage.

Making the American way of life negotiable to lesser forms is the first mistake.  Actually lowering it through promoting lesser forms of work and lowered wages multiplies it.

For highly different (and lower quality) values of "middle class lifestyle".  For the modernized areas, this translates to a lifestyle filled with shoddy knockoffs.  For the less modernized areas, it does not even exist.

Even if you put that aside, they have absolutely no say in their government and are much easily disappeared compared to countries that have sent work over there.

Repost:

Maybe I'll bring the Govt down on me for saying this, but there are larger issues in play:

- Integrity in Government, Original Regulation was in response to Robber-Baron Monopolies, Regulation Capture is where people with money, power & influence pay, bribe, or offer career advancement to government officials for their influence and support for documents

- Jobs are down, Wages are down, Savings are Down, Wealth of US Middle Class is down, it is a break down in the education system to have young people say that education is too expensive, Culture has broken down to equal just corporate culture as parents must work, parents just manage their kids like human resources, ... we no longer get to know our kids & don't help to see that they have normal relationships and don't look to see how they respect themselves OR Understand Themselves OR How they relate to other kids and adults and learning...

- Today marks the high point in US Middle Class Wealth and the Top for their Strength, this means this is the last chance for Revolutionary changes in Federal Government, In Simplifying Income Taxes, In simplifying Accounting, In simplifying Financial Instruments, and in ending the crazy stuff that caused the 2008 Global Financial Crisis

- The US Ideal is gone, The Vision is Gone, the basis of USA's Unique Freedom & Liberty & Equality is gone as the US Constitution is pushed aside by Presidential Signing Orders and Everything that the US Congress Does or signs

- Militarism is up, Violence is accepted, Women are now part of the Male Culture of Tough and Violent

---

- Everyone Agrees that the USA Joining World War I was a big mistake and possibly a huge PR Campaign, I agree with this... War doesn't pay off for anyone even if you claim the high ground by saying your smart bombs reduce Civilian Casualties

- facts seem to indicate that Bankers operate behind the scenes to promote war, war loans, war debts, payments to Defense Contractors of which they are investing, and today we have Contractor Logisticians, Contractor Mercenaries, Contractor Armies, and it is big Business

---

- You gotta talk about the loss of small businesses, there is even federal legislation to favor small businesses, but the system is working against the small business

- Systemic Analysis does help greatly in understanding the USA, it seems that you can't understand the media or rumors and grasp the USA's Problems... You see that the US Government is made up of many systems... and many systems can be called "Broke" as they fail for their intended purpose,... this is very important as this means we need "Federal Commission or Inspections" to bring out the facts,... after all we Tax payers are footing the bill for systems that don't work and actually support corporate Subsidies, awards to giant corporations, and... well a kind of Fascism

Cost of running my business is up 30%. Getting tougher and tougher.

Planning to buy a smaller business 5 hours north of me in a smaller town for retirement. Everything is about 30% less up there from housing to business.

The street my business is on has about ten for lease signs for over a year.

Leases are $6-8 dollars a square foot here + NNN !

My lease is up next year , very happy.

When the shit circus comes to an end there'll be blood.

True story.

Step Dad's Step Mom...rich old lady, owned a couple oil wells and various utilities.

My wife and I are basically redneck hicks (if that's not redundant) when we met her years ago.  Didn't give a shit about her status, didn't care about her money.  Had no interest in her business(es).  She was just a decent sort of lady that we'd visit from time to time.  She lived in Las Vegas with Step Dad's dad.  (Tis step-stuff is after being a kid...for both him and I and we're good with each other.)

Anyway, Step-Step-Grandma dies.  And we go to Las Vegas for the funeral.  Naturally we get there a day or two early and spend some time gambling.  We took a whole $100 to fund the gambling.  It was the week-end we COULD NOT LOSE!

We'd walk up to a slot machine put in a couple dollars and hit $1,000.  Over and over (back then that's all we knew, and it paid out in coins, not that depressing paper), people asked us to drop coins in their machines for them and they'd split in various ways...and they'd win.  Then we realized we had to stop and go to the funeral.

We get there and we're all excited, we've got about $12k burning a hole in our pocket and we know we're the hottest thing to hit the town since Elvis. We sit through the funeral with rings of fire, our asses were wanting to jump up and leave...but we stay.  At the end of it, a guy comes up to us after talking to my mom and stepdad.

He says I'm her attorney.  And I know that you have been mentioned repeatedly in her will.  I'd like you to come by tomorrow at 4 to discuss it.

We leave wondering what the hell (we didn't know about the oil wells, etc.)  Off we go back to the casinos where we eventually come home with $27k.

We go to the atorney's office.  Mom, Step-Dad and Step-Grandpa are there.  We're wondering what the hell is this.  Attorney says, she was a bit eccentric and she wrote regular updates to her will.  For whatever reason she had she would make someone the heir to something, then write to remove them. I was one that she kinda liked...so in Jan 92 I was to inherit two oil wells, then in Dec 92, she removed me and placed the wells with a charity...then in April 94, she put me back on the oil wells, but a month before her death she gave the wells back to the charity.  It was confusing as fuck because the Attorney was opening letters and reading them a little out of order.

While all that was going on I was wondering 'why in hell would this lady give me two oil wells?  We hardly knew her.  Give the wells to her step-son or husband.'

It was a relief when that bit of humiliation was complete in that we were free and clear of it all.  I asked that we be excused before anyone else went through that shit.  (Glad of it, too, because she did the same to her husband and step-son.  Everything went to dogs or cats or some shit.)

But, looking back, if I'd just known what it was that turned her on in the first place and what it was that pissed her off.

There's nothing magic about charities. You're assuming various strangers can use the assets in a better way than the people you know.

While that's fine for you, it's not necessarily best for everyone else.

Why wait until you die? If you were really smart you would donate all your assets to a homeless care charity and then live high on the hog with a hot cup of soup a day and a clean blanket once a week for your cardboard box. I really think your idea is brilliant. If I start a charity will you be my first donor?

A very strange thing for you to say - no inheritance is one of the main tenets of socialism.

Wed, 09/24/2014 - 09:11 | 5251121 SocialismIsCancer

THE main tenet of socialism is for the proletariat parasite masses to steal the earnings of the productive & successful rather than earn their own.

I would require EVERYONE to earn their own, including the offspring of the productive & successful rather that just inherit their parents' success. This is just & equal.

USA also leads the world in the number of illegal economic invaders, many tens of MILLIONS, who suck down wages for genuine Americans. Note that it is VERY difficult to function as an illegal economic invader in the EU because illegal invaders cannot open a bank account, get a driver license, register a vehicle, rent or buy any residence (or turn on utilities), get a mobile phone service agreement/contract, etc, etc WITHOUT a residence permit. But in the USA illegal invaders can do all these things and more - even vote in elections !

Total Profit = Total Revenue - Total Cost

As long as labor is a factor in total cost the capitalist will try to reduce it. Unfortunately at some point you take the customer out of the equation and when you do that the whole idea starts falling apart. We are at that stage of the game now.

Wed, 09/24/2014 - 03:08 | 5250754 peggleball

It depends how you define developed? I spent almost a year in a 3rd tier city in China wouldn't call it very developed by "western" standards. The is alot of progress for sure but there is a long way to go still. As example you can take the waste disposal.  Every street has something that looked like a dog house made of bricks where people were supposed to drop their waste bags. It was massively undersized so by pickup time the dog house was more like a sarcophaagus under the cheops pyramid of waste. There are many things like this that eats away at the argument tha china would be more developed. it depends really what and where you look at.

But yes, developed is a flawed term. It should be some relative term in my mind but it is more of a synonym for "western".

I used to have something similar in the place lived in a few years ago (not china). And they are great. Little smell and waste littering around them. Inside is just a giant plastic bag that truck comes pickup now and then. Also, no smell copared the the trucks that comes to "devour" the bags from regular dumpsters.

Good point on China. Some cities are very developed, and are generally what most of the world is shown by Chinese authorities. But you get away from the largest cities and things look very different. China is a country in various stages of development.

I have no idea what the hell, "old phart" is even trying to say in his post, but well, what do I know?

Is he saying that going to Vegas is something that everyone should try because you'll start with one hundred dollars and probably walk away with twenty seven thousand if you expect no returns?

Or that knowing a rich, old, eccentric and senile, old lady's with flawed ideologies that "charities are better recipients of her wealth" than anyone else makes life interesting?

Or is he saying that putting all your faith in vegas while not caring about wanting a better life style by working for it is the way to go as long as you have a "happy go lucky" streak in you?

I think I am more cofused than he was at the "will reading", Tyler's post was about "jobs"?

Anyway "Teethvillages88" is on to the right idea. The only thing that I would add is this. The common denominator in the top six countries is what???  Now, you know that you know it but....wait for it......"Big government of course". Followed very closely by credit expansion to ridiculously high levels which equals of course massive debt. Coupled to large tax collection departments, military's and police departments you get...wait for it....socialism, which we all know works about as well as facism or any other "ism".

It takes approximately $29 per hour worked in the private economy to pay for this monster government and the low end workers are paying their part thru lower wages and higher prices and rents to taxpayers they do business with. The problem is not rich people. It's not immigrants. It's not corporations. It's government.

I am more willing to accept that a big chunk of the shit going on is not some grand plan - but more the law of unintended consequences.

You install some programs like SS or Medicare, unemployment pay, food stamps, housing allowances, Obamaphones,  pass hundreds of thousands of regulations on everything from minimum wage to how much fucking soda you can buy --

Then are surprised when your over controlled pile of shit doesn't smell very nice.

If there really are a few people controlling the world - don't you think we would at lest know their fucking names?

Who are these all powerful mother fuckers - and what do they do all day?
