Making Up For Lost Time: US Drops 'A Month Of Bombs' On Syria In One Night

Tyler Durden's picture

Never one to miss out on some heavy "shock and awe", Bloomberg reports that the U.S. dropped almost as many bombs and missiles on Islamic State positions in Syria in its first night of airstrikes there as it did in the first month of attacks on the extremist group in Iraq. It appears American foreign policy comes down to this, "it's better to ask for forgiveness than permission," as the offensive unleashed 200 precision-guided munitions including 47 Tomahawk cruise missiles, and also got to play with its new F-22 toy in its first combat mission. The first night of airstrikes was “only the beginning,” Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon’s spokesman, told reporters.

The "allied" airbases...

As Bloomberg reports, the U.S. dropped almost as many bombs and missiles on Islamic State positions in Syria in its first night of airstrikes there as it did in the first month of attacks on the extremist group in Iraq.

The offensive two nights ago, joined by five Arab nations, used about 200 munitions, most of them precision-guided, as well as some of 47 Tomahawk cruise missiles that were launched from two warships, according to U.S. Central Command. That rivals the 253 bombs and missiles aimed at the Sunni terrorist group’s positions in neighboring Iraq from Aug. 8 to Sept. 10.

...

The overnight attacks hit compounds, storage facilities and even a finance center of Islamic State, which has seized a swath of Iraq and Syria. The first night of airstrikes was “only the beginning,” Rear Admiral John Kirby, the Pentagon’s spokesman, told reporters.

...

The attacks also counted on the Tactical Tomahawk, the newest version of the cruise missile made by Raytheon Co., which can be redirected in mid-flight.

“You fly it, and it can receive changes in targeting, changes in direction,” the Navy’s chief of operations, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, told reporters last year. “It can go up and actually loiter.”

...

The barrage dwarfed the airstrikes in Iraq so far under President Barack Obama, some of which took out targets as small as a single Humvee or a roadside bomb.

“There’s an expectation that the U.S. needs to bolster defense spending because some of the challenges that we face are larger than” the Pentagon budget will provide, said Howard Rubel, a New York-based analyst with Jefferies LLC.

Mayville disclosed the F-22’s first combat mission by showing a photo depicting damage it inflicted on part of an Islamic State command-and-control center in Raqqa.

The fighter delivered munitions guided by Global Positioning System satellites against the facility, Mayville said. Designed as an air-to-air fighter with a secondary ground-attack mission, the F-22 is equipped to drop two 1,000-pound GBU-32 Joint Direct Attack Munitions made by Chicago-based Boeing Co.

It was vindication of sorts for a plane never before used in combat that Senator John McCain, an Arizona Republican, said in 2011 “may very well become the most expensive, corroding hangar queen ever in the history of modern aviation.”

In 2009, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, citing its limited utility, capped the F-22 program at 187 aircraft after $67.3 billion has been spent. Congress approved.

The Government Accountability Office said in March that the Air Force planned to spent $11.3 billion more to upgrade the jet and “address the aircraft’s reliability and structural problems.”

*  *  *

And the military assets involved agasinst Islamic State...

*  *  *

Of course, the potential blowback concerns have just begun - as we noted here.

Completely illegal to attack a sovereign country.  But then only Putin is a mass-murderer.  The New York Times says that - so it must be so.

But that's exactly how the great mass of dull-witted sheep that form the majority of most any country always think. They are always happy to go off and kill a multitude of those that are different than them, or just in their way. American Indians, Vietnamese peasants, virtually any form of Arab or Muslim, doesn't matter, the public is generally pretty happy with war and killing.

They only get unhappy when their children start dying in any numbers. But we've figured out how to get around that with our hugely expensive smart weapons. We can blow anybody on earth up by spending billions and hardly risking a single precious American life.

I suspect that Americans as a whole do not have the desire to waltz, tango, two-step, or even walk into another country, sovereign or otherwise, and kill anyone. Americans, along with most of the rest of the world, are caught in the middle, most of us trying to raise families, more or less incapable, at least in an immediate sense of doing anything to stop it. All of us are caught in this trap, and while Americans as a whole are not immediately on the chopping block, our time is coming if the psychopaths orchestrating the slaughter are not dealt with.

Sadly, I think the time of dealing has more or less page, and that the slaughter will continue for the foreseeable future... moreover, I doubt your home team is any more morale... although I would hope otherwise for your sake.

We live in interesting times...

The US has an all volunteer military.  They gather for each new war and sing songs of glory to the soldiers (who volunteered).  Many singers (especially those who sell any amount to the country music fans) who speak against the killing are tagged as unpatriotic and unsupportive of the heros going off to kill the enemy.

Those who volunteer are held in such high regard they get preferential treatment in getting jobs, especially law enforcement.  There are entire campaigns on the radio to hire the exsoldier first since fighting in the ME was such an important thing for the good of the US.

The citizens of the US voted Bush and Obama to second terms despite the blood.

The citizens of the US are truely responsible for their govt. and that can be good or bad depending on your view of what is happening.

How the fuck did god damned ISIS conquer all that territory without F-22s, tomahawks and aircraft carriers?  They must be magic.

That just proves how stupid Obozo and every other US prez is.  Dropping a few bombs will do absolutely nothing except kill and anger civilians, who will later vow revenge.  And for good cause.

Let's hope they target Obozo family members, as well as those of the politicians, banksters, MIC execs and military officers who support this sickness.  An eye for an eye.  Obozo goes to church and agrees with this.

Stumpy you have it mostly wrong.  Sure the country music fans love the patriotic prose more than others but that's only because the non veteran rural population is fed the propaganda day in a day out that the military is a noble option for their family that has very few professional or job opportunities outside of farming.  But the family that have a family member that has been there and done that do not glamorize the enlistment because they see the mental and physical damage to their loved ones first hand.

The volunteers you speak of are given that "preferential" treatment so they are kept busy with life and family so as not to turn on their previous master for the above mentioned mental and physical damage.  It certainly is not because "fighting in the ME was such an important thing", the .gov could give a shit about these men and women - .gov only wants to keep them occupied so they will be less of a burden going forward.

And if you believe either Bush or Obama were installed due to a citizen vote count then you need to check yourself.  The citizens of the USA have not chosen a president for quite some time and I'm sure will never have the opportunity to do it again.

Your last statement is the only true one of the bunch.  Grats!

Know your enemy

Stumpy4516's picture

AD, I agree in part.

The "masters" dreamed up the hire a veteran programs for the purposes you say.  But, the citizens of the US are all on board with the program for the reasons I gave.  The citizens believe preferential treatment should be given because volunteering to kill in the ME is viewed by those citizens as important and a noble sacrifice by the volunteer.  If a person owns a company it might be better to view service in the ME as a black mark instead, especially if a second tour was done.

I am from that rural population you note.  There are families where at least one of the boys always joins up on a multigenerational pattern.  The population talks with pride how well the US kills large numbers of people. The community does glamorize (or puts on a pedestal) volunteering for the ME and the parents do speak of it with great pride and receive words of support for what their son is doing.  I do not have a wide base of knowledge to go from but a surprising number seem to resign for additional service.  Amazing, after Vietman.

You are correct that the govt does not give a damn about this, they want the veterans to be employeed and not a threat by action or words.

The choices in the elections are predetermined by the masters.  But the citizens did support Obama for a second term.  If the vote was rigged it was rigged only a small amount due to the level of support he had.

Trapped... into CONSUMING!!! Trapped into watching 4+ hours of TV a day. Trapped into your bread and circuses... It is YOUR choice to fund the entire shit-show.

1. If money is power (fiat holders make the decisions), why do we piss it away on CONSUMPTION!

2. Disengage the thieves' economy on all non-essential functions. (you need to eat and pay rent, but no more going out, no more video games, netflix, cable, smartphone, cars, etc... the middle-class lifestyle)

3. Deploy your capital today on solutions tomorrow that do not require dollar inputs. (ex: planting a few fruit trees now will cost a few bucks and labor, but net you dollar-free fruit)

4. Spend your new-found free time with loved ones and pursuing goals that improve the quality of your life.

GENERAL BOYCOTT and try OCCUPYING YOURSELF!. If you are consuming non-essentials, you are supporting this garbage.

Also, if I hear one more person talk about "raising a family" I'm going to puke. You do everything you do for one reason: TO SUPPORT YOUR LIFESTYLE. You spend WAY WAY WAY more time at your JOB than you do with your family. WTF?

Meanwhile, all that Cambodia bombing ruined the agricultural base and led people into the loving arms of the Khmer Rouge.

Isis taking over the govenment and the slaughter of every enthic minority group in Syria. But by then it won't be news, something else will.

On drones, Obama is Bush

February 12, 2013

On the use of drones for targeted killing, Obama’s policy is Bush’s policy, argues Seattle Times columnist Bruce Ramsey.

President Bush authorized about 50 non-battlefield drone strikes. President Obama, who has more drones to fight with, has launched more than five times as many drone strikes, all in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. The count at year-end from both was 411 strikes and 3,430 dead, according to Zenko’s new paper, “Reforming U.S. Drone Strike Policies.”

Not a day goes by that he didn't have the deepest regrets for what he did to that Country but what he always said was that having remorse for those actions won't bring any of those people back or those that you saw in that video made whole again.

Remind me, please: Are the other members of this Coalition of the Reluctant still refusing to bomb Syria and sticking to Iraq only, or have they changed their minds? And are the Germans, Italians, Danes et al participating militarily at all, or were they just included in the coalition graphic because it looks less unilateral that way?

I admit to not keeping a close watch on developments, but last I heard (which was very recently), not even the UK were attacking anyone yet. It was just the US and France, and the latter only in Iraq, not in Syria. Has this changed?

If I am a civilian in anyone of these countries being bombed by the US, especially since the US always holds itself out as a shining light of democracy, and I see Bush and Obama elected, not just once, but twice by the electorate, would I not then hold the people who keep electing these fools responsible? American citizens get all up in arms over terrorist attacks on American citizens, but until we start standing up against all the shit being carried out in our names, are we not culpable in bringing terrorism to our shores?

They are doing, at least on the international level, just what Americans want them to do.  Americans truthfullly want to be in control and to exceptional on the world stage.  They also want resources secured to protect their standard of life.

They do not want to admit this to themselves or each other.  That is an unspoken agreement, the general population is told it was done "for" them not that it is being done "by" them.  Americans get to seperate themselves personally from the events.

The rotten trick on Americans is that it is not being done for them but for those behind the curtains.  And those behind the curtains will not decrease their take from the American economy even though there is no longer much choice cream to skim.  The amount taken will only increase even though it destroyes the US.   At some point they will treat the Americans themselves much in the same way.

The only terror attacks in America since 9/11 were carried out by US citizens. Boston bombing etc. I include the vile school terror attacks, because this is just what they were. Schools targeted for maximum terror effect. 9/11 was predicted in memos to Bush, Rice and existed inside the CIA, and on the desk of the National Security advisor. American allies, Saudi Arabia carried out 9/11 and trained for it inside NATO member Germany. etc. etc. How deep does the rabbit holes go? I don't know, but we know that Washington was fully aware attacks were coming, the paper trail is proof positive, and the emergency evacuation of Saudi nationals is another proof of a sort. On Bush's express presidential orders, special flights were arranged to fly fom city to city collecting rich Saudi nationals and a few people on the terror watch lists, the FBI did not complain. And the Media praised Bush for protecting these innocents. Fucking stinks to high heaven!!

I said it last summer, any US military involvement is extremly dangerous when it comes to Syria on so maney different levels. besides being illegal and morally worng there is a much greater danger lurking in DC's actions. there are so many different ways this whole thing can go sideways in a hurry and before anybody can do anything to stop it, we find ourselves in a much, much larger world of shit...

It is clear that this is the war on Syria Obama always wanted. ISIS was created by America, NATO and Saudi Arabia. Now they provide the excuse we need to get into Syria and own the place. Mark my words, airstrikes will be pushed until Syrian troops or government entities get hit, the USA will have accidents in hopes of provoking a response on the local level by a Syrian soldier. Then they will go after the things they really came to bomb.

Were I Russia, I would warn Washington, if you bomb Syria's national interests, then your boys in Kiev are fair game. Imagine a targeted Russian missile strike on a Nazi Volunteer Battalion Training Camp outside Kiev? There are plenty of them and Russia knows where they are. Just think, what the morning news cycle would be like if Russia launched a dozen Iskander Surface to Surface Missiles onto Nazi Training camps! This of course would be illegal, while the air attacks on Syria ARE legal. We all know that! Don't we! Of course we do. Evil Russia killing Nazis, while good Americans kill Syrian's defending their nation. It is all so clear, so clean cut. You are with us, or against us.

Mish said that this foot in the door tactic has more steps to follow. US warned Syria that if any of their planes were downed during the operation, US would obliterate all of anti-air defenses. So, if a plane or a helicopter goes down for whatever reason, as they typically do... if it is shot down by Syrians, by ISIS or simply breaks down, US willl have an excuse to escalate further, which has been the plan all along.

How was US able to expend so much ammunition in such little time? Well, it's been piling up since the first way we tried starting a war, but the accusations fell through.

Wesley Clark was right when he quoted: “We're going to take out seven countries in 5 years, starting with Iraq, and then Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and, finishing off, Iran.” He might've been off on timing, but the geopolitical strategy was right on the money.

Think people like me are ding bats and unpatriotic. A good majority think gun control in a necessary evil and that TSA is also a necessary evil.

Many think the u.s should just 'glass' the entire ME except Israel. Don't ask me how they think Israel could survive all that radiation.I refrained from arguing.

Not that we should be invading and dropping bombs on sovereign nations that we haven't even declared 'war' on, but...   The YF-23 was (and still is) a Superior aircraft to the YF-22 by most accounts.   However, Northrop did not have the 'ear' of Congress the way Lockheed did.   Same with that 'pregnant bug' looking debacle called the F-35...

Personally, I'd take the enhanced SU-35 any day.   And the (in service yet?) SU-37 or PAK-50 - which actually takes a few cues from the YF-23...

War, in its ultimate analysis, came down to cost/benefit analysis. Using a tomahook ( sic) to sink a destroyer...then, well done, but using the same missile to dismantle a lousy, mud building? in the end...

Here is the prediction: If pentagon keeps doing it for a sustained period of time, expect pink sheet layoff notice out for all non-essential workers in the pentagon. Bad for pentagon employees, good for weapon suppliers.

Just the boys playing with their toys.

Bryan Suits radio host in KABC Los Angeles 790 was completely savaging this move today, saying that NONE of our purported allies agreed with it at all, they all want to attack ISIS in Iraq and chase it back to Syria (where it is SUPPOSED to be), and that Assad and the Iranian Ayatollahs are just laughing themselves silly over this all, and some very important Saudis and Sunnis from all over, are not at all happy about what is going on.

I still want to confirm if B-1s were used.  An F-22 dropping bombs is almost a silliness.  I guess it's still a good idea for the Pentagon to finish getting the F-22s to work right, any problem in the F-22 is liable to be a problem in the F-35 as well, the things have been money-pits but who knows if the problems were even that real or just excuses to charge up the yin-yang.
