Obamacare Architect Says Society Would Be Better Off If People Died At 75

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of The American Dream blog,

Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, brother of Rahm Emanuel, says that society would be far better off if people quit trying to live past age 75.  His new article entitled “Why I Hope To Die At 75” has the following very creepy subtitle: “An argument that society and families—and you - will be better off if nature takes its course swiftly and promptly”.  In the article, Emanuel forcefully argues that the quality of life for most people is significantly diminished past the age of 75 and that once we get to that age we should refuse any more medical care that will extend our lifespans.  This is quite chilling to read, considering the fact that this is coming from one of the key architects of Obamacare Of course he never uses the term “death panels” in his article, but that is obviously what Emanuel would want in a perfect world.  To Emanuel, it is inefficient to waste medical resources on those that do not have a high “quality of life”.  So he says that “75 is a pretty good age to aim to stop”.

Emanuel believes in this philosophy so much that he says that he would like to die at age 75.  Of course he has no intention of committing suicide, but if he happened to drop dead once he hits his 75th birthday he would be very happy about that.  The following is an excerpt from his new article

I am talking about how long I want to live and the kind and amount of health care I will consent to after 75. Americans seem to be obsessed with exercising, doing mental puzzles, consuming various juice and protein concoctions, sticking to strict diets, and popping vitamins and supplements, all in a valiant effort to cheat death and prolong life as long as possible. This has become so pervasive that it now defines a cultural type: what I call the American immortal.

I reject this aspiration. I think this manic desperation to endlessly extend life is misguided and potentially destructive. For many reasons, 75 is a pretty good age to aim to stop.

And so Emanuel plans to start rejecting pretty much all medical tests and treatments that will prolong his life once he reaches that age

At 75 and beyond, I will need a good reason to even visit the doctor and take any medical test or treatment, no matter how routine and painless. And that good reason is not “It will prolong your life.” I will stop getting any regular preventive tests, screenings, or interventions. I will accept only palliative—not curative—treatments if I am suffering pain or other disability.

This means colonoscopies and other cancer-screening tests are out—and before 75. If I were diagnosed with cancer now, at 57, I would probably be treated, unless the prognosis was very poor. But 65 will be my last colonoscopy. No screening for prostate cancer at any age. (When a urologist gave me a PSA test even after I said I wasn’t interested and called me with the results, I hung up before he could tell me. He ordered the test for himself, I told him, not for me.) After 75, if I develop cancer, I will refuse treatment.

Similarly, no cardiac stress test. No pacemaker and certainly no implantable defibrillator. No heart-valve replacement or bypass surgery. If I develop emphysema or some similar disease that involves frequent exacerbations that would, normally, land me in the hospital, I will accept treatment to ameliorate the discomfort caused by the feeling of suffocation, but will refuse to be hauled off.

A couple of decades ago, an article like this would have sparked mass public outrage.

But today, this article hardly even gets any attention.

That is because this kind of philosophy has spread everywhere.  It is being taught at colleges and universities across the United States and it is even represented throughout the ranks of the Obama administration.

For example, Barack Obama’s top science adviser John P. Holdren believes that implanting sterilization capsules under the skin of women could be a way to reduce the size of the population and increase the quality of life for everyone…

A program of sterilizing women after their second or third child, despite the relatively greater difficulty of the operation than vasectomy, might be easier to implement than trying to sterilize men.

The development of a long-term sterilizing capsule that could be implanted under the skin and removed when pregnancy is desired opens additional possibilities for coercive fertility control. The capsule could be implanted at puberty and might be removable, with official permission, for a limited number of births.

Yes, this guy is a total nutjob.

But he also has the ear of the man occupying the White House.

And we are not just talking about a few isolated crazies like Holdren.  This agenda have been fully embraced by our politicians in Washington.

For instance, did you know that the federal government actually has an “Office of Population Affairs“?

On the website of the Office of Population Affairs, you can find information about abortion, female sterilization, male sterilization and a vast array of contraceptive choices.

U.S. taxpayers are paying for all of this, but most people don’t even know that it exists.

Of course this agenda has been moved forward by both Democrats and Republicans for decades.

And the woman that is very likely to be our next president is also a very strong proponent of this philosophy.

When Hillary Clinton accepted Planned Parenthood’s Margaret Sanger Award back in 2009, she spoke glowingly of Sanger…

In a speech to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America Awards Gala, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that she admires “Margaret Sanger enormously, her courage, her tenacity, her vision.” Secretary Clinton said she is “really in awe of” Sanger for Sanger’s early work in Brooklyn, New York, “taking on archetypes, taking on attitudes and accusations flowing from all directions.”

But the truth is that Sanger was deeply racist and was determined to do whatever she could to help control the population growth of the poor.  The following is one of her most famous statements

“The most merciful thing that the large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it.”

Hillary Clinton is also a huge supporter of the United Nations Population Fund.  If you are not familiar with the United Nations Population Fund, it is an organization that funds abortion, forced sterilization and brutal eugenics programs throughout the developing world.

Population control advocates such as Emanuel, Holdren and Clinton are fully convinced that they are doing the right thing.

They actually believe that the world will be a better place if less people are born and if the elderly do not live as long.

You can be certain of one thing: when Dr. Emmanuel turns 75, he will bump someone else off the list to ensure personal survival. Someone else will die so that he lives.

This is how it works in a crony capitalist healthcare system, where the rich and politically connected screw everyone else.

It's simple, all this will come to pass as soon as enough baby boomers pass away that they can't vote exorbitant medical benefits for themselves.  Right now they are just warming anyone younger up to the idea.  Same way they have anyone younger than 55 repeating and accepting the mantra "I'll never see any of the money I put into social security."  Until then, they will bankrupt the country to pay for knee replacements and Hoverounds.

Yes, that portion is correct.  An arbitrary "age limit," however, is asinine.

Even worse is expecting a government that's just teeming with heinous criminals to fairly implement some system that determines what level of health care is appropriate at certain age ranges.  Anyone who feels qualifed to implement such a system can go die in a fire.

Your life should only be perpetuated as long as YOU can afford it. My parents actually saved for their retirement and healthcare. Now days everyone is forcibly taxed for it and says fuckit when it comes time to actually save or prepare. Survival of the fittest fuckers. Live as long and as well as you can, just not on another's dime. Of course now we have decided to actually eat those who saved or dare prepare, as they are undeserving (individual fairness standards apply) and should be forced to share. Ant and the fucking grasshopper all over again. And of course the grasshopper was lied to and lead to believe he need not prepare for winter, so he deserves what the ant has sacrificed for. Circles.

All through your life, you’ve paid for health care. And just before you die, when you begin to use what you’ve paid for, you become the target for the cost cutters and the health care profiteers.

Watch out for the last two months of life. It’s a rigged heist to suck Amercans dry.

Regardless of age, hospital admission rates do not increase until just a few months before death, according to James F. Fries, M.D.  Using a study by the Manitoba Health Services, research shows that “two months before death a quarter of people are hospitalized; in their last month, about half of the people are hospitalized."

Another study Fries cites, Medicare Reimbursement per Enroller, shows that medical costs don’t necessarily rise with age. “Medicare costs for those who survive a given year do not increase with age. It is the high cost of death and the increase in the fraction of  each successive age group who die that cause the apparent increase in costs per year."

In other words, it’s a win-win for the medical industry. Die early and cha-ching; die of old age and it gives you a bed, a morphine pill, a grumpy nurse, a jolly therapist, jello you can’t eat and a bill that exceeds your total life’s earnings.Cha-chinnnnnng!!!

Now, Zeke just wants you to pay up front without the bed.

We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.” --George Orwell

Indeed, Nuremburg should be a reminder to all.

Please note Emmanuel's example: that folks are exercising, taking vitamins, juicing to "irrationally" live longer. On the contrary, not only are too few doing it that way, but that is the cheaper, non-medico way to do it. There's far too many going with the statins, diabetes drugs, stents, etc rather than handle *anything* about diet, exercise, lifestyle. Now that's the group you should be addressing. If Medicare rewards you with a Hoveround, then that's what you're gonna get. And yes, he's a big f***ing hypocrite who hopes that the web caches will be purged by the time he turns 75 so that no one will remind him that he wasn't supposed to get that new liver with his custom-grown fetal stem cells.

What we must always remember...the very basis of our modern collectivist government is theoretical efficiency. While their efficiency models are failing and falling in around their ears, still they hang onto that mantra. This efficiency demands that ultimately those not producing must be cast aside. All of this economic justice that has been thrown about has simply been a tool to destabilize and drive us into government dependency, as is required to run an "efficient" state. The destructive aspects of this dependency (the general lack of motivation to produce) becomes a self feeding mechanism which demands ever more efficiency to compensate for the continual loss of productivity. Its a downward spiral that ultimately disproves the whole theory as only those who produce are left standing, the very foundation of of initial prosperity that so many thought "unfair". Circles.

He doesn't really believe that EVERYONE should die at 75, only those dependent upon the system, a system that they have deliberately created. Those with the cash for real healthcare, or those with the always valuable "waiver" from the conditions set upon the rest of us will carry on of course. They are a valued member of society with great accrued wisdom of infinite value when it comes to telling the rest of us what is important..or not. NO these people will likely end up as a software implant in the "system" to rule over us forever more. Maybe their head will be in a jar with electrodes tied to the IRS supercomputer.

There is no need for the negativity of 'Death' Panels, Quality of life is mentioned, wouldn't a 'Quality of Life' board be an easier sell?

Perhaps all citizens could appear before a 'Quality of Life' board when they turn sixty, said board to be made up of 'Lawyers ?' not over thirty-five, (Young people have no romantic ideas about 'growing old' and living in the inevitable wrinkled skin and lack of Pheromones aging brings, the board could assess your 'Quality of life', meaning, do you have enough money to fund your existence, or are you now or likely to be, a 'Burden on society'?

If you are now, or likely to be, a 'Burden on Society' you could be told; you have ten years to improve your situation, lacking sufficient improvement, the law will be clear, and of course, it is for 'Everyones' best interests, I'm sure no one would want to be a burden on the young.

Should this regime be adopted I predict the ages from sixty to seventy, for many, will be the most productive of their lives, the people born with money, the class so Loved, revered and envied by America, will be exempt from this as of course they should be, after all they are God's true favorites and they have the Money to prove it!

I can't believe this douchebag is complaining about people exercising, but it is very revealing.  Many Americans are waking up to the fact that the shit "they" put in our "grocery" stores and call "food" contains a shitload of poisons, many put there intentionally, and apparently they are there to help us expire when we are no longer working (and paying taxes, of course), and now we know this means at age 75.  We supplement because the "food" we eat is sadly lacking in so many essential nutrients, it is no wonder we get sick, need sickcare, and die early.  How dare we try to stay healthy, when our purpose is to work hard for a few decades, pay a shitload of taxes, and then checkout before we start to spend the money we've saved up!

"There is much talk in the aging studies community about “compression of morbidity,” a shortening of the dysfunctional phase of the death process. Instead of slowly getting weaker and sicker and circling the drain in a protracted, painful descent that can take hellish years or even decades, we can squeeze our dying into a tiny sliver of our life cycle. Instead of slowly dwindling into an atrophic puddle of sick fat, our death can be like a failed last rep at the end of a final set of heavy squats. We can remain strong and vital well into our last years, before succumbing rapidly to whatever kills us. Strong to the end.  That, my friends, is big medicine."

In a free society, where the tax-payer is not responsible for the health care of others or the consequences of your bad choices, you are free to:

1) Smoke until your lungs turn black

2) Eat until your stomach explodes

3) Party like it's 1999

...etc. and while some may not agree with your lifestyle, nobody has a lawful reason to stop you from doing it (in a free society).

Now that the tax payer is responsible for health care, government can control all the behavior it wants in the name of controling healthcare costs.

Just imagine New York City style soda bans to the nth degree nation-wide.  We'll be up at dawn doing jumping jacks while singing "Dear Leader"  not just for the sake of our health...BUT FOR THE SAKE OF THE HEALTH OF OUR NATION!

Retirement age when social security was enacted = 65.  Life expectancy in 1935 = 61.  SS was always intended to be a tax, not a retirement plan.  Our generation seems to understand this.  Our parents, not so much....

Retirement is a concept, not a truth. Folks can retire at any age ... if they have the funds.

US welfare programs will simply pretend inflation is 0% while inflation is actually 10% and the problem "fixes itself" over time. At least that is their (wishful) thinking as best I can tell.

Detroit is just a look into the crystal ball for what is coming to many US cities, and increasingly there will not be any place left to move to for work/lower taxes.

Hate to say it but that is the norm, rather than the exception. Most do fine until one day, something unfortunate happens or they see a doc about some fairly minor but nagging problem and get bad news, or a bunch of pills to take, or slip and fall and break a hip, or have a sudden stroke. From that point on, time is against them and they spiral downhill fairly rapidly, 2-5 years at the outside. End up spending their life's saving, too.

So the first comment from someone who has a clue. If you have been down this road recently with a parent you will understand.  It is amazing just how many people make their living keeping geezers/patients alive one more week.  At some point you  "volunteer" to be an input to the medical machine and its ridiculous paperwork-money.  It comsumes all your time and attention.  What do you get? They will break your ribs to keep you alive - because they can get paid for it. It will make the last few days excruciating.   They will pump you full of sugar water and give you Lasik to pee it out, because they can get paid for it.  They will prescribe cholesterol drugs, even though you are 80, because they can get paid for it.  And even though your old and tired brain could use the cholesterol - it coats nerve fibers after all.  Heart over head, I guess.  You have to insist on a dignified death, which used to mean you sit in a corner, stop eating for a week or two, sleep a lot, shrivel to a small, dry leaf and then, quietly stop breathing.  No machines required.  It takes real courage to do it though.

In a boardroom once i heard the finance director of a state-paid nursing home pitch the cost/benefit analysis of hyperbaric chambers for the geezers.  They were discussing "patients" who were for all intents and purposes already dead, broke, and probably without involved families (ie most of their clientele).  Dude figured if he could use the chambers to get another week's worth of pulse out these people, he could bill medicare/aid $X and add $Y to the bottom line.  It was sickening.  Literally farming these old fucks for state payments....  And our course it was a non-profit with some kind of faith affiliation

Another believer in eugenics, whose philosophy is amazing similar to the Nazis and to the Romans 2,000 years ago who would toss out older ill people to be eaten by wolves.  Why doesn't this demented doctor put the words "Arbeit Macht Frei" on his business cards?

His death philosophy is prevalent in government these days, which is why the FDA lets drug makers peddle toxic vaccines that cause disability and death and probably why the FDA is trying to ban the use of triclosan in liquid hand soaps.  Triclosan can somehow kill the Ebola virus, even though Triclosan's primary function is as a bacteriostat.

My aunt was "kept alive" for almost 2 years intravenously in ICU after a stroke, try again.

But I refuse to join in the dumping the baby with the bathwater crowd and in the end proposing "because of such cases, and as a case by case determination is too complicated / potentially unfair or corruptible,  it is best to stop giving any (a bit more expensive) medical care to folks over 75" [unless of course you can pay cash for it],
because that's what it will end in even if you vigorously deny even the slightest intent in that direction.

And if something if written by a Rahm, you should know there are no "unintended" major effects that can occur by such an article.

Essentialy this is promoting rationing of care to keep profit margins up for insurance companies. We have more than enough wealth and potential to provide cheap effective healthcare if we had any semblance of a free market. Zek just wants to reduce demand on services while maintaining the required insurance premiums by turning abstinence from care into a virtue. I'm sure in reality he won't partake in this new virtue.

That said, the high demand for services after 75 is due to hedonic adjustments. Eating chemical crap which is supposed to be just as good as natural takes its toll on the body.

Hey, Zek, why wait until 75? Do us all a favor...

It started to dawn on me this year that if I saved a pile of money all my life, it would all vaporize in the last two years of my life if I had difficult medical circumstances at death. What am I really saving for if this is a high likelyhood outcome (I ain't gonna live forever).

Further, what if I was *forced* to recieve the care (i.e. I drop in a grocery store, they cart me to the hospital, run my credit report, and proceed to really, really, really try to save my life).

This is reinforced by the fact that the primary cause of bankruptcy is medical related costs.

The health care system is designed to extract as much cash as possible and will ensure that if there is any middle class assets left to strip mine, they will be strip mined.

Cooter

Cooter - fine, you can plan for this with a living will or placement of assets in a trust that may not be used for your medical care and expenses. Choose for yourself what you will, but please refrain for choosing for me and everyone else. Let me make my own choices. Allow me to be free.

What Emanuel is saying is that everyone else gets to decide how and when I go, not me. And because everyone else cannot really make this descision, he is really saying he should make it, with arbitrary rules and measures that are meaningful to him. He is an evil fascist.

Obamacare Architect Says Society Would Be Better Off If People Only Lived To Age 75"

Is he wrong? Would society not be better off if people died at 75? It may be morbid and impractical, but would society not be better off if it could eliminate its no-longer-productive members?

It depends on your definition of better.  From a purely materialistic perspective we should kill off all retards, cripples, geezers, PTSD-ers, pensioners, people who waste their time on ZH, ...

Do you really want to live in a world like that?  You're next buddy!

Can't make a blanket statement based on age.  My mother is 82, volunteers 20 hours per week and walks 3 miles per day.  Don't see any reason to have her take out back and shot.

I'm not advocating killing everyone on their 75th birthday, I'm just saying that if you add up all the positive and negative contributions to society of everyone over 75, the negatives most assuredly outweigh the positives and in a purely theoretical exercise, it would be better for society if everyone died at 75.

If a mandatory death age were set, I think it's likely that the contributions made "to society" would go down in total.  People would tend to leave the workforce earlier and would also tend to greatly dislike "society" in general leading to far less altruism.

why wouldnt "everyone" at age 73 if that is the game plan - strap on whatever weapons they have and take out the Emmanuels of this world and their collaborators?

what is the downside?
