Major Sell Program Trips 50-DMA, Sends Stocks Sliding
A "huge" institutional sell order, covering almost 200 individual stocks, is rumored to have been responsible for getting this morning's weakness across stocks going as equity indices catch down to bonds and credit. The S&P 500 broke key support at its 50-day moving-average (for first time in 2 months) and is back at 6 week lows. The Russell 2000 is now down 4.25% from the FOMC meeting last week...

Yup...sell EVERYTHING to BUY GPRO, a rugged camera company whose shares have doubled over the past month on no news AND which has gone up 6% each day over the past week regardless of the markets being up 200 or down 200. makes perfect sense to me.

Dow

maybe this move down
will get some legs
They can't blame me for this one. I'm still in Vegas with Moe Greene.
Nope.
Too much layering on vol & protection to restart the RSI index trading programs without 10b in direct slams.
But, but... it's contained right?

They can just do what they do and "pause" the trading...until the computers can straighten this out.

Algos lock up on down days - don't know what to do. Is this finally the beginning of the end?
STFU....GPRO IS UP 2%.....
What exactly would a sell order like this be? A company dumping its portfolio? An investment frim? A giant hedge fund? I don't really understand what an "institutional sell order" means.
On that note love all the RED on my screen.
Code for a pension fund normally.
Perhaps a pension fund being offloaded from a corporation to an insurer. Seems to be the thing to do these days.
Just a little softening up of the 50Day
Quick someone here post something bearish to trip the algos green!

I thought retail was supposed to be the bagholder. Did this 'institutional investor' miss the meeting? This is going to be a lot of stock for Grannie J to mop up.
Hmm.. did somethin happen somewhere that we don't know about yet?
c'mon tyler..I keep refreshing my screen, ..but dont see it..
I'm guessing a hedge fund guy like Tepper is getting tired of the market going nowhere. With a bit of effort, it might be possible for a few people to trigger a crash by selling a large amount with a market order. Or it could be Russia, or China. Manipulation happens all the time in every market. Here's Cramer explaining how it's done:

The Emergency rampjob has just been unleashed there

John Paulson finally shutting down, or does Stevie Cohen want to hold only cash?
We've already passed the singularity - most folks just don't know it. The computers are already in control, but unlike in "Terminator" or "War Games" where they controlled the nukes, they instead run our financial system. Same outcome? Time will tell...
Called a buddy at CBOT and he said “…this is no big deal we all have been expecting some selling. But the bear boys will continue to scream downturn…But we all know this happens at this time of year…keep you guns loaded we may have a real bounce up once the elections are over…no one here is predicting downturn…”
"....no one here is predicting downturn…”
Nobody left to buy then?

FAT FINGER.. as we all know there is NEVER a reason to sell this market. At least not under penalty of have your FED access cut off.
Holiday weekend, best time to run all stoplosses. True liquidity is function of who-is-around, tomorrow may be the thinnest day of a very thin week. It's deceptive really, market looks open because the prices are still blinking on the screens. And those headlines, perfectly timed for amplitude, surely an accident. it is so useful to have incompetents onstage. First down, then up; a well executed program could save a miserable year. But, I seem to recall a Chief Dealer who left for holidays only to discover that his 2nd had blown the entire year's results. Quote and cover, folks.
OK, who called the code red?
