Police Officer Shot In Ferguson
When a member of the black community was shot by a local Ferguson cop on August 9, under circumstances still undetermined, it led to several weeks of angry rioting by the largely impoverished population of this St. Louis suburb, not to mention broad popular outcry against the tactics employed by the Ferguson PD and wholesale punditry taking over primetime TV for hours on end. Fast forward several weeks when last night, Reuters reports, a police officer from the "strife-hit Missouri city of Ferguson was shot and authorities are still searching for the shooter, law enforcement officials said."
According to Lt. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar the shooting did not seem connected to protests occurring elsewhere in Ferguson. "I wouldn't have any reason to believe right now that it was linked in any way, shape, manner or form with the protests," he said. Still a question now arises: will this latest mirror image violence in Ferguson merely stoke the already latent hostilities between all members of society? Then again, the situation is not an exact mirror image as the police officer was not killed, but "merely" shot in the arm by an unknown assailant.
The details of what happened from Reuters:
The officer was chasing the suspect outside the Ferguson Community Center on Saturday night when the person turned and shot him in the arm, St. Louis County Police Sergeant Brian Schellman said.
The officer, who was treated at a local hospital, returned fire but apparently did not hit the suspect, Schellman said. The shooter disappeared into a nearby wooded area, eluding arrest.
Police said earlier that there were two suspects, but detectives later determined there was only one, Schellman said.
Several hours later, an off-duty St. Louis City police officer was shot at and suffered a minor arm injury from broken glass while driving on a nearby freeway in a personal car, police said.
It was not immediately clear if the two shootings were related.
Meanwhile, a crowd of about 100 people gathered near the scene of the night's first shooting, with a group breaking off to protest at Ferguson police headquarters, according to Kareem Jackson, 27, a musician who goes by the stage name Tef Poe and is a member of the activist group HandsUp United.
"People are peaceful as a duck, just literally standing on the side of the street watching," he said in a phone interview from the site where protesters had gathered.
To be sure, if the shooting is found to have been in retaliation for the death of Michael Brown, one can be certain the duck will hardly be peaceful. Although, for the time being, when it comes to global riotwatch, all eyes remain glued to Hong Kong, where the Ferguson baton has so far been quite sucessfully passed on.

Sure. Let's just create a bunch of "Police Free Zones" (PFZ) and see what happens.
Even today, there are still plenty of places in America that would do just fine with a PFZ (as long as the Meth heads stay mello). You probably woudn't notice the difference, except that taxes would be lower. In fact, there are many counties, like the one where I live, where there are so few police, it might as well be a PFZ.
Except that Ferguson isn't one of them. And really, no community that has a majority Black population (or even one over 10%) would be.
And if the Anarchists in the crowd don't believe me, feel free to move to one of the Urban PFZs if they are ever established. It won't be the Libertarian paradise you imagine.
I don't believe for a second the Police are perfect, or that some cops aren't worse than criminals, or even that they always have my best interests at heart. But they are by-and-large needed in most places that don't resemble CheeseHead, WI or Hazard County.
As long as you are changing the rules you might as well encourage everyone to carry a firearm, especially people not known to be criminals and take away the government teat. Then I think you would find that even black communities would be fairly peaceful, after a spell in which they sort things out amongst themselves.
Pretty much the way it works out in these woods. Even the Sheriffs Deputies here will tell you they aren't obligated to protect you, just to take a report after the incident, and follow through with enforcement of the law.
But then, when most have a dogleg in the center console, politeness tends to prevail.
I find it curious that the US, which had an amazing system for quite a while, is so quickly forgotten, dismissed, and re-engineered.
As I understand it, the common law framework of the US at its founding was relatively simple; if you damaged the property of another, you were accountable for the loss. That could be paid in cash or in indentured servitude. Refusal to pay meant giving up the legal protections of the law (i.e. outlawed). At that point, anyone could do anything to you and it was legal.
The system was not perfect, but since individuals were directly responsible for their actions they tended to be productive rather than unproductive.
Today, we have a system that simply attempts to incarcerate people at the highest possible expense (i.e. skim) and every one lines up at the trough to feed.
We don't need a "new" system, we should just fall back to our old one, including our constitution. But I don't have illusions of that anymore; we are culturally way beyond that point.

We wonder 'why' a cop is trained to 'shoot first' rather than assess the situation, check out whether it is a toy gun, determine if the suspect is pointing a weapon or a cell phone, etc. This illustrates the 'why' as suspects can turn and fire in just a fraction of a second. The cop's tendency to shoot is also influenced as to 'why' the suspect is fleeing, and the fact that the suspect is fleeing at all contributes to this. So if you punch a cop, point a gun at a cop, or flee from a cop - bad things can happen. The problem, of course, is when you do nothing and you still can get shot or beaten up - and sadly, those cops are still on the street and not in jail.

Latinos, blacks fight whites at Hart High; 4 students arrested

NEWHALL - Fighting between white, black and Latino students Friday at Hart High School resulted in the arrests of four teens, a sheriff's sergeant said.
Students were arrested on suspicion of failure to disperse, said sheriff's Sgt. Cortland Myers, adding that the fight appeared racially motivated.
Witnesses said black and Latino classmates teamed up together and fought white students during lunch in retaliation for a fight between two teens at the school on Thursday when racial names were called.
William S. Hart Union High School District officials said it was not known what started the fighting or whether it was racially based.
Students on campus had other impressions.
"It was racial. All the Mexican and blacks gathered up and fought the whites," said Agustin Chavez, 15. "It was a rumble."
The freshman was off campus when fighting broke out about 12:35 p.m. and watched from the street as sheriff's deputies swarmed the school to intervene.

@ Karaio: I pay no attention to up or down arrows and I've no intention of downing you. I'm in my mid 60s and fully accept that America today is largely populated by illeducated adults with the emotional makeup of 18 year olds. I simply speak of that which I've come to realize as truth. Thank you for the YouTube URL, it was very interesting. I used to develop advanced weapons systems. The Russian minister has a great strategy, made many very good points, I am very eager to see what advanced weapon systems the Russians deploy. I found the Russian scientists & engineers to be VERY smart & resourceful, unfortunately their own "leaders" held them back or misdirected them too often :-)
