Why Is The USDA Buying Submachine Guns?

Tyler Durden's picture

By Charles McFarlane of Modern Farmer

Why Is The USDA Buying Submachine Guns?

“Submachine guns, .40 Cal. S&W, ambidextrous safety, semi-automatic or 2 shot bur[s]t trigger group, Tritium night sights for front and rear, rails for attachment of flashlight (front under fore grip) and scope (top rear), stock-collapsib[l]e or folding, magazine - 30 rd. capacity.”

In May, the USDA's Office of Inspector General filed a request for these weapons. But why exactly do they need them?

According to a USDA press rep, the guns are necessary for self-protection.

“OIG Special Agents regularly conduct undercover operations and surveillance. The types of investigations conducted by OIG Special Agents include criminal activities such as fraud in farm programs; significant thefts of Government property or funds; bribery and extortion; smuggling; and assaults and threats of violence against USDA employees engaged in their official duties,” wrote a USDA spokesperson.

Those seem like legitimate enforcement activities, but still: submachine guns? Not everyone believes the USDA being armed to the teeth is justifiable. On Aug. 2, the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund launched a petition to support a bill that would curb the ability of agencies like the USDA to arm themselves. They see it as overkill and scare tactics, especially for smaller producers.

“What we have seen happen, with the FDA especially, is they have come onto small farms, raw milk producers, and raided the heck out of them with armed agents present,” says Liz Reitzig, co-founder of the Farm Food Freedom Coalition. “Do we really want to have our federal regulatory agencies bring submachine guns onto these family farms with children?”

The Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund petition focuses on two now infamous blows to the raw milk community – the 2010 and 2011 raids on Rawsome Food Club in Venice, California. These raids were carried out by armed federal agents, from the FDA and other agencies.

The OIG’s Investigation Development bulletins show there have been three incidents in the last year that involved firearms and two in which USDA agents were verbally threatened. Still, most of their enforcement operations surround white-collar fraud of government programs, often involving SNAP programs. “If there is fraud in the SNAP program, look at how it is implemented and make changes in the entire program,” says Reitzig. “Don’t bring machine guns onto farms.”

The Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund are not the only ones interested in taking guns out of the hands of USDA agents. Utah Congressman Chris Stewart is the sponsor of the bill on the FTCLDF petition. “At its heart it comes down to this: To myself, and for a lot of Americans, there is great concern over regulator agencies with heavy handed capabilities,” Rep. Stewart told Modern Farmer.

His bill, H.R. 4934, hopes “to prohibit certain federal agencies from using or purchasing certain firearms, and for other purposes.” When asked about the USDA’s plan for submachine guns, he said, “I can’t envision a scenario where what they are doing would require that.”

Another concern is simply accountability. The request for submachine guns from the USDA doesn’t say how many guns — asking them seems like a non-starter. “They have been very unhelpful in trying to find out any information about this,” said Rep. Stewart. “We couldn’t get answers — it doesn’t seem right to me.”

However, he also cautioned: “We have never argued that federal regulators don’t need to protect themselves.” But if USDA investigations were perceived to be potentially violent he suggested, “They should do what the rest of us do, call the local sheriff.”

Citizens need full auto weapons to defend themselves?  Hell no, says the government - such weapons are not necessary for self defense.

Government thugs need full auto weapons to defend themselves?  Hell yes, says the government - as public servants their lives are precious!

All you bitchez have probably seen it already, but the movie Farmageddon made me want to arm all the local farmers. We have our own little subsistence farm for the family, and all us neighbors share when we have too much of one item or another. I can't see USDA coming down this old country road, but who nows what happens when men get it in their head that they have power over us commoners...just as a warning to USDA...the neighbor is a really good shot.

Funny story

Not long ago the new law man in town walks into the local watering hole in little Yakutat , Alaska. He is wearing ALL his cop paraphernalia including his shiny new bullet proof vest. First guy at the end of the bar turns and looks at the law man and laughs out loud and says to the cop , " a lot of good that vest will do you in a town full of head shooters". Flustered and at a loss for words the new lawman leaves without saying a thing. The chief arrives shortly after asking everyone to go easy on the new guy.

When push comes to shove I will put my money of those of us who shoot for meat.

No one has bothered to make yet another obvious observation:  This is a Testament to the power of the Arms lobby.

The P+L books would look quite different if the Arms makers didn't have Friends and Lobbyists in DC.  Seems to me that it's either the Gov that's buying their HW, or they create another gun-confiscation scare (threaten some extreme gun rule), to get people up in arms about it and go on a buying spree.  Not getting suckered again, like I was in the last gun-scare ~ 2 years ago.

After a while, two things become obvious:  1. Just how many guns and bullets does anyone need?   Not 'want', but actually need.  and 2. If the Gov Agencies that have nothing to do with genuine LEA activity can indulge unconstrained in military weapons, then so should Joe Public.  After all, for Democracy to remain alive (or hope to), it is more important that the Gov fears its people than the People to fear its Government.  In the meantime...

Seems like "The QE of Arms" - either via Public or Private consumption.  Whether genuine or contrived demand.

A lot of that has to do with the fact that they have literally limitless ammo. Even if they use up what they carry, more is always on the way. The other part of that is probably due to the fact that the whole 'avenge 9/11' thing wore off a long time ago, and many of them doubtless know they are there because of bullshit, and aren't willing to stick their head out and actually aim and risk getting shot for nothing in a bullshit war.

Better to stand as quick as possible and lunge for the fucker and get shot trying to kill him than kneeling with your back turned to him. Same for the people who kneel and sit there while their heads get hacked off with a pocket knife. Makes you wonder why they don't stand and attack or simply run away and wait to get shot. Would be a lot less traumatic and less painpul and much quicker that way at least.

I was beating myself up for trading so much currency for surplus 5.45x39 last year.  Then ATFE banned import.  Now I wish I'd bought more.

The surplus 7N6 that was being imported had a mild steel core.  ATFE changed its mind and decided it was armor piercing.  I don't know if they were trying to be proactive in preventing the later 7N6 with hardened core from getting in or if they were just being assholes.

Anyway, how long before .gov decides M855 is armor piercing and bans the sale to civilians?  Get it while it's "cheap" and available.

As long as this current government continues to arm rebels and enemies of this nation all over the world with our best weapons and training then in the eyes of the people of this nation they have lost the moral wherewithal to demand that the people here disarm themselves of same. Not to mention the Constitutional protections in place to prevent it. If full auto weapons and training are good enough for 80IQ Syrian ISIS Jihadis (at our expense I might add) then they should be good enough for the average American to protect their families with and guarantee food on the table if need be. There really is no wiggle room in that argument.

Look these government agencies want you to think that question their motives, its all some NWO plan to take our freedoms. As that may have truth in the statement, I do not think this is the case. Ask yourself who is auditing these government agencies after weapons and ammo are purchased? Nobody...So this is the governments way of supplying the boogeyman which happens to be ISIS. Thats where a lot of these weapons go. Take some of that budget money from each department, buy a shitload of weapons, send some of it to ISIS and whoever else they want, then get congress to approve more funding for the rebels, and buy even more weapons while each politician getting a kickback of FRN's. Everybody in their little circle is happy. Just my 2 cents.

A Reading from the Book of Armaments, Chapter 4, Verses 16 to 20:

Then did he raise on high the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch, saying, "Bless this, O Lord, that with it thou mayst blow thine enemies to tiny bits, in thy mercy." And the people did rejoice and did feast upon the lambs and toads and tree-sloths and fruit-bats and orangutans and breakfast cereals ... Now did the Lord say, "First thou pullest the Holy Pin. Then thou must count to three. Three shall be the number of the counting and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither shalt thou count two, excepting that thou then proceedeth to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the number of the counting, be reached, then lobbest thou the Holy Hand Grenade in the direction of thine foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it."

Late one Friday afternoon after all the markets had closed and people were on their way home to relax after a long grueling week, martial law was suddenly and apparently without any particular reason, declared across the Continental United States.  Juan Valdez, in order to protect his bags of coffee, donned his USDA martial police uniform, ballistics outfit, helmet and goggles and took his AK-74 recently purchased refurbished, second hand from the Romanian warehouses, set out to ensure no unfriendly strangers came any closer than 3 miles to his distribution facility, set neatly on chic Rodeo Drive in LA.  Seeing some innocent children playing hopscotch nearby, Juan, with his eyes bugging from his head, heat pounding rapidly and feeling empowered by his position as a reserve USDA officer being called to active duty, decided to show the neighbors a thing or two about serious fucking caffeine....

The most sensible reason I have heard is that they want to give forest rangers more firepower.  I was surprised to find that the National Forest Service is under the USDA.  It seems that  its easier for the cartels to run well guarded clandestine grow operations in our forests than it is to smuggle in their product.  It makes sense that rangers out in the backwoods would want to be packing something with heavier firepower than pistols (and lighter to carry than full size rifles) if they run into trouble.

Astute observation, but there is another highly plausible, more insidious conclusion. The late Michael Ruppert pointed out in his Truth and Lies of 9/11 presentation that running guns and drugs via Forest Service planes was a favorite tactic of DoD/CIA, with all the documentation to prove it. Someone above mentioned these guns being for "something else," and given the M.O., it seems likely that this is yet another guns-for-drugz operation.

Or, and this is brilliant because it costs nothing, we could de-criminalize drugs (taking away the profit and risk-premium) and end the drug war. But then, what would we do with all of the chi-mos who are employed by .gov?

It would make more sense for .gov to stop freaking out about weed so that the cartels lose there reason for existing and no one has to go out into the forest to hide their growing operation. Then we don't need these dumbfucks to arm up.

They have been very unhelpful in trying to find out any information about this,” said Rep.

This non-commital, namby-pamby, I-don't-really-plan-on-doing-anything-about-this kind of crap answer is why I will absolutely NOT be voting this election. Because if our highest level representatives can't or won't get answers on something this big, then there's no reason to play this game any more. Theyre basically building up a military capability against their own citizens.
Quite obviously, this isn't for the protection of citizens, but for the protection of the upper political class in opposition to the public.
This has been the pattern for some time now. Even the IRS is armed to the teeth.

Remember this when the financial markets can no longer be manipulated to hide the economic collapse, and the government status quo can no longer be protected.
Then, expect every American bureaucracy to descend upon its citizenry with force of arms.

Of course, the elephant/jackass sock puppets in CONgress and what's left of "the states" never acknowledge that Article 1, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution enumerates NO FedGov power over agriculture, education, sick care/insurance, food, drugs, retirement plans and almost everything else they do, and that other sections and articles expressly prohibit them from seizing these powers from The People and the states.

The military firepower acquired by FedGov and generously donated to local police in every state is obviously part of their puppet masters' plan to enforce a totalitarian surveillance police state.
