New investigations by the Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Inspector General have found SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet's announcement that small businesses received 23.39% of all federal contracts was greatly exaggerated. As WaPo reports, Federal agencies overstated their success last year in contracting with small businesses that face socio-economic disadvantages finding $400 million worth of contracts that agencies gave to ineligible firms but still counted toward their targets. Rather stunningly, the report found of the top 100 recipients of the highest dollar amount of federal small business contracts, over 75% were actually current large businesses. Trust...
As The Washington Post reports,
Federal agencies overstated their success last year in contracting with small businesses that face socio-economic disadvantages, according to a watchdog report released Wednesday.
The Small Business Administration’s inspector general’s office said it identified $400 million worth of contracts that agencies gave to ineligible firms but still counted toward their targets.
The findings are significant because 2013 was the first year that the Obama administration claimed to have met the federal government’s small-business contracting goals. The flawed numbers led to inaccurate reports to Congress and the American people, according to the report.
The most recent data from the Federal Procurement Data System indicates of the top 100 recipients of the highest dollar amount of federal small business contracts, over 75% were actually current large businesses.

The first SBA Inspector General investigation that uncovered fraud in federal small business contracting was released in 1995. In 2003 an investigation by the Government Accountability Office found over 5,000 large businesses were receiving federal small business contracts.
The American Small Business League (ASBL) has launched a national campaign to secure a Government Accountability Office (GAO) and FBI investigation to uncover the specific individuals that were responsible for the two decades of fraud that have been uncovered at the SBA.

And loaned most the money to businesses which were bigger than small, as in bigger or big businesses, but not small businesses.

Saw this sort of slight of hand last yr in dealing with local SBA. After one 20 minute meeting where it became clear that the gov't ee knew less about running a business than my 4 yr old niece, I quickly exited the building.
3 months later I received a curious email with a bunch of loaded questions.
1) How many more employees have you added as a result of your dealings with the SBA?
a) 0
b) 2-20
c) 21-100
I'm probably exaggerating a bit, but it was almost that blatant. When I asked what this data was going to be used for I got 2 answers: 1) "If we show our effectiveness it improves our funding for next year" and 2) the state utilizes these estimates in their unemployment calculations.
What? So let's say that by some fluke you clicked B) 2-20 ee's. The gov't would take the mid-point and assume you hired 10 people b/c of your dealings with the SBA? Compound that times 50 states and well you might be able to massage U-6 downward. :)

The worst treatment I ever got was in Broward County, FL where a new business was INELIGIBLE to bid on a county contract for the first 12 months of inception. I started a stump grinding and "vegetative debris" removal business after Hurricane Wilma wrecked the county's parks. I had a Class B tree trimmers license too.
It is Government who 1) makes you jump through hoops like a trained circus animal to get the appropriate licenses and permits, then 2) keeps you a non-threat to their crony friends so they don't lose any business from new competition. A few County Commission members are in jail, but the damage was already done.
OT: remember Edwards & Clarkson? The 2 Florida State ADA's who got $1 million settlement from forecloure king Marshall C. Watson? And then got shit-canned by State AG Pam Bondi? They worked in Broward County too.

Many people forget that small business is the backbone of America, this is the real job creator and the place where people "with skin in the game" do real work. This is where many skills are learned and honed and useful training takes place.
It does not help that the President and most of Washington lack solid backgrounds in both business and the economy. Few of the people who make the laws and set the rules have ever been responsible for meeting a payroll. More on this subject in the article below.

Thats funny, because small businesses I see have actually paid more money to the govt this year, and pretty much got nothing back for it.
Taxes are a "waste" by every measure, so is insurance for the most part.
