Contained? Dallas Hospital Discharged Sick Ebola Patient 2 Days Before Isolation

Tyler Durden's picture

While yesterday's CDC press conference was factual, it was clearly very much designed to avoid panic as time and again the US public was reassured that Ebola in America was 'contained', 'hard to contract', and would 'stop here'. However, as Bloomberg reports, the man with Ebola in Dallas was initially sent home from the hospital with antibiotics after seeking treatment for an unknown illness, officials said. We know CDC has stated the need for the US to be prepared but the fact that after the patient sought medical care on Sept. 26 and was sent home with antibiotics, he returned in an ambulance to Texas Health Presbyterian two days later and was admitted, suggests US healthcare workers are not prepared for the possibilities that Ebola is here in America (as this is the 13th possible case in the US).

As Bloomberg reports,

A man with Ebola in Dallas was initially sent home from the hospital with antibiotics after seeking treatment for an unknown illness, officials said.

...

The man is being kept in isolation in an intensive care unit. He had no symptoms when he left Liberia and began to show signs of the disease on Sept. 24, the CDC said. He sought care on Sept. 26, was hospitalized two days later at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital and is critically ill, said CDC Director Thomas Frieden.

Do not worry though...

“There is no doubt in my mind that we will stop it here,” Frieden said at a press conference in Atlanta.

The man was traveling to the U.S. to visit family and was staying with them. He was exposed to only a “handful” of people during the time when he had symptoms, including family members and possibly some community members, according to Frieden, who said there was little risk to anyone on his flight.

“Ebola doesn’t spread before someone gets sick, and he didn’t get sick until four days until after he got off the airplane,” Frieden said. “So we don’t believe there was any risk to anyone on the flight at that time.”

...

“It’s not a potential of Ebola spreading widely in the U.S.,” Frieden said on a July 31 conference call with reporters. “That is not in the cards.”

...

“There shouldn’t be any new infections from this point on,” Osterholm said. “We are going to shut this down.”

Finally...

Another suspected Ebola case is being evaluated at a National Institutes of Health facility, U.S. officials said, the 13th such possible infection in the U.S. All others have tested negative.

Yes.

I'm a paramedic and the wife is a nurse.

Sadly, I gotta tell you guys that it is only in the last 3 days or so that the field personnel are seriously starting to question why we aren't gearing up for the possibility of this thing going sideways.

As far as people in an administrative capacity are concerned, they've had a few conference calls and received a few memos ...... and that's it.

The field guys are taking it upon themselves to get educated and prepare as best as we're able because it seems obvious that while concerned, they aren't taking it as seriously as they should.

Well fuck that. We're the first ones that die from this kinda shit.

You can pretty much guarantee that your EMS systems will get wiped out in the first waves of "expirations."

Check out CDC timeline for median time first symptoms appear 5.5 days from time of contraction of Ebola virus.

Do the math given the time of the Dallas patient's flight itinerary from Africa to U.S., and presentation of first symptoms.

This guy in video uses timeline & CDC's own data to demonstrate greater than 50% likelihood Dallas Ebola patient was infected during flight to U.S., meaning there is at least one more (and likely more than one more - given 17 1/2 hour flight) infected person on flight.

Unsurprisingly its almost impossible to travel direct from Roberts Int (Liberia) to the US, if he booked hacker fares it might not have been obvious to the border staff that he'd travelled from Africa, it was just another guy coming in from Brussels (which seems to be the most common interchange point between the US and Roberts).

How anyone can believe that a guy that became so ill he felt he needed hospital treatment, couldn't have been mildly infectious a few days before when passing through somewhere in the East is unbelievable. He might not have been but for the CDC to rule it out completely is total bollocks.

End The Fed had an interesting comment under last night's Ebola story.  ETF claims there is a 50% chance that the Dallas ebola guy contracted the disease on the plane.  http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-09-30/cdc-confirms-first-ebola-case-diagnosed-us#comment-5274018  It's certainly possible under the WHO's timeline.  The CDC's statement that it's contained smacks much more of PR spin that an honest assessment of the situation.

My bet is that he realized he had been exposed while in West Africa and immediately decided to get his ass to the states to seek medical treatment as soon as symptoms appeared and confirmed he had the disease, because he knew he would get better care and a better chance to survive here.  If true, there might be many similar cases of Ebola infected individuals flying out of Africa in the next few weeks, as there are clearly insufficient health facilities there to provide even minimal supportive care. I mean think about it, if you lived there you would probably be seriously considering leaving, right?

And think about this; assuming CDC could successfully track each possible person exposed to "Patient Dallas," it takes quarantine room & average of 25 properly (standard of care & containment) vetted health workers to monitor, treat and/or keep person isolated.

Wed, 10/01/2014 - 11:13 | 5275262 TruthInSunshine
TruthInSunshine's picture

1) Assuming "Dallas Patient" is not patient zero on flight, CDC hasn't tracked Patient Zero (or admitted it).

2) Median delay between contraction of Ebola virus and onset of symptoms is 5 1/2 delays; this can range all the way to 21 days. Theoretically, Patient Zero could display symptoms well after "Dallas Patient" has/did.

3) Close contact sufficient to transmit Ebola Virus is a 3 foot diameter, and chances of transmission with that proximity or closer increase statistically with time. Flight on commercial airliner from Africa to U.S. Is close to 20 hours without any stop-overs.

So in watching the CDC press conference and Dallas coverage yesterday, two completely bullshit PR elements jumped out at me, which cues me that the .gov is going to do what I feared they would all the way to the end of this, lie their asses off!!

The first was this bullshit analogy to the flu, they keep making mention as do others, to the flu!! That's just bullshit, nobody panic, keep buying stocks fantasy talk!! The flu kills about 10-25k people yearly, but has a mortality rate of less then 1% AND the deaths are usually people who have serious medical problems already, heart diesese, etc. Ebola has 80-90% death rate! and affects healthy people of all ages!!
NOT THE SAME FUCKING THING!!

Second, doctor after doctor said, "it was hard to get"????!!!!!! Are you serious?? Totally disingenuous and utter non sense, just watch how the doctor act, not what they say, to decide if that's true or not!!

I think we are in for some real trouble on this one!

Yeah its killed fewer people than cars/flu/maleria, but its growth is and potential to become a historic event is far worse.

The saving grace is that developed African nations like Nigeria seem to be doing a better job of containment than the more typical poverty stricken ones. However, winter is coming to the northern hemisphere and we tend to enclose ourselves more, so the odd case that makes it to the developed world will spread faster (like a cold) as the temperatures drop.

I agree with the gist of your sentiment.

I am a skeptic about ebola.  I know very little about the alleged science behind it and I frankly do not care.

As a gambler, I put half of my money on ebola not even existing and the other half of my money on it being an evil stunt.  By evil stunt, I mean that sheeple with regular colds or sniffles are falsely diagnosed with "ebola-like symptoms" and then are deliberately infected after they are trapped in quarantine.  The intention of such a stunt is that if the disease does not spread, at least mass hysteria and fear will spread.  The evil PTB are gamblers too.

I take a few steps back and ask myself: "Why the hell are they reporting this?"

"Antibiotics.....for a virus? Yup...we have the finest doctors in the world."

Hang on.....I certainly do not look at our doctors and medical practitioners as some sort of demi-gods.....but even if they know that someone has a virus ( forget for the moment Ebola) they will normally issue antibiotics because a viral infection usually leads to a secondary bacteriological infection.  Can't do much about the virus unless you have been vaccinated before.....but we can usually take care of the bacteria.

That said.....yeah......the optics of this are NOT good.  Much less the fact that we not only let this guy in from a known Ebola hot spot....but even after going to the hospital no one detained him based on where he came from.

It was real simple.....

"Mr. (X)....let me get some information from you.  Do you have insurance?  Date of birth ?  Nationality ?  I.D.  Passport ?   Oh I see you came from Liberia.  Are you from there or just visiting ?   Were you around anyone during your time in Liberia that was suspected or known to be infected with Ebola ?

I'm sorry....but based on this information and the fact you are sick and we don't know what is making you sick we are going to have to put you in isolation and run further tests until we find out what it is that is ailing you."

And right at the second, you notify everyone around you, staff, management, and make the call to the CDC in Atlanta.  And you put yourself in isolation.   PERIOD.....END OF STORY.

This is complete and utter BULLSHIT !    Our government is completely incompetent in this matter.....but OBAMA and his politcially correct, open borders stance makes it 1,000,000 X worse.  He will kill this country if he is not stopped.

because a viral infection usually leads to a secondary bacteriological infection.

Actually, no, it doesn't. Viruses very rarely lead to secondary infections, e.g. a cold leading to bacterial pneunomia is exceedingly rare. Left to themselves the vast majority of people will get over a cold or flu all on their own. No Tylenol required.

The original poster was right - doctors are trigger-happy on the ol' antibiotics because generally speaking doctors are not healers, they are drug and surgery salesmen.

Overprescription of antibiotics and overuse in agriculture is already leading to big problems with drug-resistant bugs. Thousands a year die in American hospitals because of these newly evolved superbugs and 100k+ are infected with them every year in U.S. hospitals.

Actually, no, it doesn't. Viruses very rarely lead to secondary infections, e.g. a cold leading to bacterial pneunomia is exceedingly rare.

You must not have kids.  I have 5.   A cold virus causes inflamation of the nasal lining.  Blowing one's nose exacerbates that....much less the scraping of your nose by tissue.  Those little tears allow bacteria to invade and replicate.   Nasal drainage irritates the back of your throat, and coughing only exacerbates that by causing small tears in the lining.  Once again.....small tears in the skin and blood vessels are an open door invitation to bacteria.  Mucous build up in the lungs creates a warm, wet environment that is great for bacteria to live and replicate.  Now you've got bronchitis along with your cold virus......or worse.....bacterialogical pnuemonia.  That's if that wasn't from the viral pnuemonia in the first place.

Out of 7 billion people on the planet.....rare is a "relative" thing.  Plus....the numbers are wrong simply because of the reporting of the correlation and causation numbers.  It's easy to give antibiotics simply because you know the truth already and there is no need to track it.  Virri are a GREAT way to introduce secondary bacterialogical infections.

But I would agree.....doctors are too quick to dole out antibiotics.  There is a reason why we have an immune system.  And most of the time it gets strengthen by being activated by the body itself.....not boosted by antibiotics.  Kind of like natural exercise vs. steroids.

I upvoted you just for your honesty.....even though you dinged me.

I have no doubt that government is malevolent.  Too much past and present evidence to deny that.  However....I think that it is a VERY small core of most of the people in government.  The rest are well meaning......but ENTIRELY incompetant.

What's my proof?   Governement and the politicians all came from us.  We "the people" formed the Constitution and the Government.  And we supply and re-supply every 2-4 years the government from.....us.

We were so incompetent in England that the Founding Fathers had to draft a Constitution along with a Bill of Rights so no one could ever claim either ignorance of what freedom and good governance could be.....or deny outright intent to destroy it.  But we are so incompetent as a people....as a nation.....we couldn't safeguard it from ourselves.  Meaning the government....."Of the people.....BY the people.....FOR the people"

I have seen the enemy....and he is us.

So....you may be right.  But I could be just as right.  Which means.....we have a government at war with itself.  The calculated, evil core on the one side with well meaning but incompetent members on the other side ignorant of what the evil side is doing.

I believe that is the case.....and it's even worse for us if true than a completely evil government.

That's a good point. They're saying Ebola can only be passed from person to person through body fluids, but did this infected person do anything that couldn't be considered normal everyday human interaction before arriving?

That's possible and a likely scenario at some point in this epidemic, but even if the exposure was unintentional, did he get on the plane and come to the US because he'd been exposed? The hospital in Dallas handled this so badly, I can see our healthcare system easily becoming overwhelmed if this virus should spread or if Ebola tourists continue to reach the US.

Liberian news has been screaming over the airlifts of American ebola patients to the US for treatment. So discriminatory! How dare we treat our own with our resources, while the African cesspool and the lack of ability to create a functioning country that isn't one giant sluice pipe of theft of public monies into private coffers remains one giant fail.

The smart move was this guy's decision to get on a plane when he had the very first twinge that told him he was infected. He knew getting here would mean treatment by American medical facilities; he knew Liberian treatment probably meant death. What would you do?

Disagree. Ive worn them in all kinds of crappy climates with no problem. Usually the biggest problem is improper fitting of the mask prior to use. It takes several steps to ensure things are sealed. Also one can only operate in high heat and humidity for so long before fatigue and thus mistakes are made. PAPR system is also an alternative, but cost goes way up then.
