American Ebola News Wrap: Up To 100 Potential Cases In Texas, 1 In Hawaii

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: TEXAS HEALTH OFFICIALS INCREASE NUMBER OF POSSIBLE CONTACTS OF EBOLA VICTIM TO 100

Despite promises by all asunder that any Ebola epidemic in America will be "contained" the dreadful news this morning appears to confirm this is not the case. From one patient, Eric Duncan, just 2 days ago, to 4 schools and 18 people yesterday (according to Texas Governor Rick Perry) to today where NBC News has confirmed with the Dallas county health and human services that 80 people came into contact with the Dallas Ebola patient or his family (including 12-18 direct). The ambulance workers are also under close watch after Duncan vomited on the ground outside an apartment complex as he was bundled into an ambulance. In addition, CBS is reporting one possible Ebola patient in isolation in Hawaii. Contained? Perhaps it is time to rethink the ethics of disease control once again.

After being sent home by a Dallas hospital,

The Dallas patient had initially sought treatment at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital late last Thursday and was sent home with antibiotics rather than being observed further, even though he told a nurse he had recently returned from West Africa. By Sunday, he needed an ambulance to return to the same hospital, where he was admitted.

A nurse asked about the travel as part of a triage checklist and was told about it. “Regretfully, that information was not fully communicated throughout the full teams. As a result, the full import of that information wasn’t factored into the full decision making,” Texas hospital official Mark Lester said.

Duncan rapidly fell ill...

Two days after he was sent home from a Dallas hospital, the man who is the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States was seen vomiting on the ground outside an apartment complex as he was bundled into an ambulance.

"His whole family was screaming. He got outside and he was throwing up all over the place," resident Mesud Osmanovic, 21, said on Wednesday, describing the chaotic scene before the man was admitted to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday where he is in serious condition.

Duncan's family took action...

That was the day "I called CDC to get some actions taken, because I was concerned for his life and he wasn't getting the appropriate care," Duncan's nephew, Josephus Weeks, told NBC News on Wednesday night. "I feared other people might also get infected if he wasn't taken care of, and so I called them to ask them why is it a patient that might be suspected of this disease was not getting appropriate care?"

Weeks added that he hoped "nobody else got infected because of a mistake that was made."

Which has led to...

NBC has confirmed with the Dallas county health and human services that 80 people came into contact with the Dallas Ebola patient or his family.

Director Zachary Thompson said these 80 people were not in close contact, but they did have some kind of contact with or exposure to the patient.

Separately, Texas health officials have ordered four family members who had contact with the Dallas Ebola patient to stay home and not have visitors to prevent the potential spread of disease.

The order, hand delivered to Thomas Eric Duncan's relatives Wednesday night by Texas Department of Health Services officials, legally requires the family to comply until at least Oct. 19, when the incubation period has passed and the family is no longer at risk of having the disease.

And then there is this....

* * *

As we noted previously, it is perhaps time to discuss the ethics of disease control a little more broadly before the totalitarian weight of government comes to bear.

At sometime in your life you've probably seem the slow-mo video of a sneeze or cough-and the thousands of droplets sprayed into the air.

Someone with ebola coughs or sneezes and it's AIRBORNE, landing on surfaces and who knows where. Just in time for fall and winter when people are confined indoors in large groups. not good!

I agree. This is NOT incompetence. It is treason by everyone in positions of power. Where is the GOP on this? Silent that's where. Which tells me they are in on it as well. Government's only duty is to protect the nation and they do everything BUT that. I really can't believe it's been allowed to go on for this long. Which again tells me that they are all in on it. Billions of bullets, caskets, FEMA camps, HAZMAT suits, etc, etc. The clues are easy to spot if you bother to look.

Designed to collapse the system...

But why is it so hard to collapse? I mean, if the very elite that benefit from the system want to collapse it, is the system so very strong and resilient that it resists all attempts at bringing it down?

That's one hell of a well-designed system! I'd say perhaps the best ever!

No I think we're not dealing with a designed collapse. We're dealing with idiotic incompetence and criminal negligence. A smart, capable person wouldn't even know how to destroy something, but a smug, Ivy-league educated indoctrinated idiot with a towering sense of entitlement leaves a path of destruction wherever he goes.

A spokesman for Brussels Airlines, the only airline to fly direct scheduled services between Brussels and Monrovia, said he could not confirm that the passenger had flown with the company.

"We also have not been contacted by anyone to tell us to take measures or contact passengers because of an infected passenger traveling with us," spokesman Geert Sciot said.

CDC officials are helping staff at Monrovia's airport, where passengers are screened for signs of infection, including fever, and asked about their travel history. Plastic buckets filled with chlorinated water for hand-washing are present throughout the airport.

It seems Americans will no longer be able to put Ebola into the dustbin as just another also ran or nuisance thing. Unfortunately the virus is picking up "critical mass." Modern developed countries will have a huge problem dealing with this.

By critical mass I'm referring to the point where enough people are infected with the virus that it can sustain a chain reaction and expand out of control. The implications of this are massive and it could change everything. More on why we should be very concerned in the article below.

Talking with my son last night. He was once at the DOE. 30 years and billions and billions to build Yucca Mountain as a nuke waste repository. And the shut down in an instant by Harry Reid.
I would not be surprised if that is an underground bunker built for the special people, using nuke waste as a cover.

Meanwhile, back at farm, nuke operators have been storing waste on site for 30 years, counting on this repository to take the waste. And breeder reactors, that could productively use the waste, are banned, because they could be used to make "bomb grade" fuel.

There are a limited number of competent operators at these plants. We best hope they don't get "too" wiped out.

Oh ffs... Vitamin C isn't the reason why fruit bats are the damn carriers. Not even close. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant, which stabilizes toxic oxygen species such as superoxide radicals or hydroxyl radicals which are spontaneously formed during cellular respiration. It doesn't have a damn thing to do with resistance against Ebola. Any resistance against Ebola is geneticaly determined. Eating a damn orange won't help even the slightest bit.

Yogi: The patient spent 3 hrs in layover in Dulles.  Of course, since he wasn't symptomatic, he wasn't contagious.  /s.

The disease might be closer to the DC people you reference than anyone realizes.

CBS:

The patient, identified as Thomas Eric Duncan by CBS Dallas station KTVT, left Monrovia, Liberia, on Sept. 19 aboard a Brussels Airlines jet to the Belgian capital, according to a Belgian official. After layover of nearly seven hours, he boarded United Airlines Flight 951 to Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C. After another layover of nearly three hours, he then flew Flight 822 from Dulles to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the airline confirmed.

So all of these Ebola carriers, who do not yet show symptoms, that go through airports are frisked by TSA agents wearing gloves who then frisk you and your family without changing gloves. But there is no danger? And can you imagine the ramifications if/when a TSA screener contracts Ebola?

Waiting for Liberia to release latest figures; their numbers for the 28th were below my estimates for that date, so growth could be slowing.  For a while it was possible to post updates every few days because WHO had fallen so far behind the data promulgated by the various Ministries of Health, however at this point I probably won't be posting them much more frequently than once a week or so.

See:

collect: as in we don't collect your personal info until we get authorization to look at it.  We, ahem, gather it ALL first (illegally).

And let's blame/sue the hospital since, well, they have deep pockets.  In other news, TH Human Resources called this morning looking to fill the day shift after it had already begun, so I surmise, given that my wife goes out of her way to block these calls every non-working day on her schedule, that they have a bit of a system-wide staffing issue at the moment.

Ok, this guy was coming back from Liberia and that shuold have activated all possible red flags and alarm bells... but once it's in the open, how do you quarantine for an illness that, in the first two days, when already infective, looks like a normal flu.. and in september, i.e. about flu seasons? Can you actually quarantine anyone coming to a hospital with flu-like symptoms, which is hundreds of thousand of people every month between november and february, and anyone who got in contact with them until tests results are back (with waiting time exponentially longer as the number of tests being carried out skyrocket)?

Of course, on Monday, Earnest said, “the President does have full confidence in Director Pierson and other members of the Secret Service to do their very important work.”

"Sift through the facts presented in this New York Times story about Thomas Eric Duncan, the Liberian man who has a confirmed case of Ebola in Dallas.

He came into direct contact with a friend who had Ebola. He rode with her in a taxi and carried her from the taxi to a hospital on September 15, four days before he flew to the United States. She was turned away from the hospital because the Ebola ward was full.

She died of Ebola early the following morning. Her brother also got sick and shows Ebola symptoms. That was at the same time that Duncan started getting sick. He left Liberia and arrived in Texas on September 20. Six days later he sought treatment at Texas Presbyterian Hospital, and was sent home. He returned two days later, and has been confirmed to be infected with Ebola.

Duncan also abruptly quit his job on September 4, so he might have already planned the trip to see his family in the U.S.

But he certainly knew that he had been exposed to Ebola by the time he boarded that plane and came to Texas, four days after his friend died of it. He must surely have known it when he first visited the Texas Presbyterian Hospital, and he must have known it when the doctors sent him home."

Think you're getting or have been severely exposed to Ebola in Africa? If you have the resources hop on a plane to the best medical care in the world at the best medical centers in the country with the full attention of the medical establishment. For free. It's a no brainer.

The fact that he let them send him home witout mentioning his Ebola exposure tells me he's not the sharpest knife in the drawer even if he thought far enough ahead to get out of Dodge and get to the US.

Stay in Africa and most likely die or say nothing and get to the US where you will have a much better chance of survival?
