American Ebola News Wrap: Up To 100 Potential Cases In Texas, 1 In Hawaii

Tyler Durden's picture

UPDATE: TEXAS HEALTH OFFICIALS INCREASE NUMBER OF POSSIBLE CONTACTS OF EBOLA VICTIM TO 100

Despite promises by all asunder that any Ebola epidemic in America will be "contained" the dreadful news this morning appears to confirm this is not the case. From one patient, Eric Duncan, just 2 days ago, to 4 schools and 18 people yesterday (according to Texas Governor Rick Perry) to today where NBC News has confirmed with the Dallas county health and human services that 80 people came into contact with the Dallas Ebola patient or his family (including 12-18 direct). The ambulance workers are also under close watch after Duncan vomited on the ground outside an apartment complex as he was bundled into an ambulance. In addition, CBS is reporting one possible Ebola patient in isolation in Hawaii. Contained? Perhaps it is time to rethink the ethics of disease control once again.

After being sent home by a Dallas hospital,

The Dallas patient had initially sought treatment at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital late last Thursday and was sent home with antibiotics rather than being observed further, even though he told a nurse he had recently returned from West Africa. By Sunday, he needed an ambulance to return to the same hospital, where he was admitted.

A nurse asked about the travel as part of a triage checklist and was told about it. “Regretfully, that information was not fully communicated throughout the full teams. As a result, the full import of that information wasn’t factored into the full decision making,” Texas hospital official Mark Lester said.

Duncan rapidly fell ill...

Two days after he was sent home from a Dallas hospital, the man who is the first person to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States was seen vomiting on the ground outside an apartment complex as he was bundled into an ambulance.

"His whole family was screaming. He got outside and he was throwing up all over the place," resident Mesud Osmanovic, 21, said on Wednesday, describing the chaotic scene before the man was admitted to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday where he is in serious condition.

Duncan's family took action...

That was the day "I called CDC to get some actions taken, because I was concerned for his life and he wasn't getting the appropriate care," Duncan's nephew, Josephus Weeks, told NBC News on Wednesday night. "I feared other people might also get infected if he wasn't taken care of, and so I called them to ask them why is it a patient that might be suspected of this disease was not getting appropriate care?"

Weeks added that he hoped "nobody else got infected because of a mistake that was made."

Which has led to...

NBC has confirmed with the Dallas county health and human services that 80 people came into contact with the Dallas Ebola patient or his family.

Director Zachary Thompson said these 80 people were not in close contact, but they did have some kind of contact with or exposure to the patient.

Separately, Texas health officials have ordered four family members who had contact with the Dallas Ebola patient to stay home and not have visitors to prevent the potential spread of disease.

The order, hand delivered to Thomas Eric Duncan's relatives Wednesday night by Texas Department of Health Services officials, legally requires the family to comply until at least Oct. 19, when the incubation period has passed and the family is no longer at risk of having the disease.

And then there is this....

* * *

As we noted previously, it is perhaps time to discuss the ethics of disease control a little more broadly before the totalitarian weight of government comes to bear.

Pardon me for assuming, apparently correctly, that the Govt. doesn't really give a shit enough about the US population to piss off the airline campaign donors.

It's also apparent the question was already asked and answered at the top levels of govt.

So you're saying there is some argument whether the govt. made the proper moral choice.

Ha ha. You funny guy.

What did the CDC say, it's only caught by contact with body fluids of someone infected? Well, doesn't a sneeze or a cough disperse virus into the air, especially in closed confines like a plane, train or bus? This morning on my train two people were hacking up a lung all the way downtown!

Anyone with a 4 year biology degree or more knows this thing has been horribly and grossly mismanaged and incredibly misleading to the general public. Flights should have immediately been cancelled to that area of Africa and people in the US are being used a lab rats as a result of poor (possibly intentional) decision making while telling us to fricking wash our hands. This is the playout of a decision by a group of people with severe moral disease. There is now way a scientific understanding of what was happening could not or was not presented to those in charge. It is incomprehensable that those in charge could be that stupid. It just does not happen.

The USA is not a "nation of immigrants".  It is a nation of invading conquerors.  The Native Americans didn't process Columbus, the Pilgrims, or anybody else through their Customs and invite them to immigrate.  Columbus and the Pilgrims came with guns, cannon, and European diseases, and wiped out the Native Americans and took their land.

And that "immigration" was back when there were only 1 or 2 million people in the USA.  Now that there are 300 million people, perhaps the USA needs "Overpopulation Reform", not "Immigraton Reform".

I think Jefferson (who, of course, lived in France for a while, and visited Italy (secretly) and England (after the War) said something like, "when we are all crowded into cities like the people in Europe, we will have as few rights as the people in Europe".

I don't know.

There are only a small finite number of people from the infected areas that have the means to board a plane to Europe enroute to the USA (and have proper credentials for that matter).  I would have to think that our European friends have probably woken up and will start disallowing flights.

Western medicine has 2 ace in the holes IMO...1) the ability to properly isolate an infectous patient, and 2) the ability (in a hospital setting) to manage internal hemorrhaging (the main killer of the ebola virus) This is NOT occurring at a grand scale in hiospitals and clinics in western Africa.

The sad thing is...this is at a "wait and see" stage right now...at least IMO.

Statistics tell us that 40% of all Ebola cases are caused by 70% of African Ebola cases, and there's a 52% chance that 80% of the deaths were caused by airborne infection, which is 30% less likely than 70% of the direct-contact infections.

Additionally, 40% of Rick Perry's inbredism is caused by 78% of his inbredism, reflecting the fact that 40% of all accidents are caused by 80% of all accidents.

Therefore, there's nothing to worry about, since 70% of all worries are caused by 36% of all worries....

Here's a thought.... I know the Party Line right now is that we're in no danger because our healthcare system is much better than that in Africa - BUT - I've heard stories over the last few years that between helicopter parents ensuring kids don't touch anything that might conceivably be "dirty" (much less play outside where they might eat dirt or something), the proliferation of sanitizing hand gels, etc. etc. that our immune systems may actually be weaker than they should be because we don't have to fight off many pathogens that in the past we would have been exposed to regularly.

That said, maybe the rates of infection/death in Africa are actually LOWER they they might be in a western society used to doing everyhting short of walking around with rubber gloves on every day, and as such we might be MORE likely to have big problems with this.

What do you think, sirs?

Let me say this: it is unethical to forcibly quarantine possibly infected people.

The way forward is to compensate them monearily for the quarantine.

This is bevause forced quarantine provides benefits to society, but imposes costs on the people who are quarantined. To not compensate them would lead to economic profits. Please understand the term "economic profits" is a key word.

But if the number of direct contacts is now up to 100, what about the contacts those 100 have made.  Anyone ever hear the term "expodential?"

If the incubation period is 21 days, the government may just be hoping that this story has run its course in the media before the real effects begin to show up.  Think how many Mexicans we will have to allow in just to replace the decimated population and pay our social security benefits.

Yes but only from someone with bad head cold.

Details only readily available from the foreign (UK) media:

"Hundreds of passengers were exposed to Mr Duncan after it was revealed that the traveler took at least three flights to get from Liberia to Dallas - because there is no direct flight from Belgium to Texas.

The other flight that Mr Duncan boarded is currently unknown and no details are being released.

United Airlines has said it believes Mr Duncan flew from Brussels to Washington Dulles on Flight 951 before he traveled from Washington Dulles to Dallas Fort-Worth on Flight 822.

Belgium's health ministry said U.S. experts had advised Brussels that the man was not displaying Ebola symptoms and so would not have been in a position to pass on the virus. A spokesman said that Belgium therefore did not need to trace fellow passengers or crew of Brussel Airlines, one of a very few operators still flying to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. "

Duncan ?#‎ebola? timeline:

Day 0: no contacts.

Day 1: 12-18 contacts (no explanation of "close contact", must mean he pissed on everyone)

Day 2: 80 contacts including "some ER folks"

Day 2+: CDC wants to know about the A320 plane and who was aboard it on all seven flights between LAX , DFW, Guarulhos, Brussels... but fo rno reason, since Duncan only had symptoms on Sep 24 and flights were Sep 19-21.

Day 3: the walking dead rise.

The fact that his whole family was screaming about some vomit makes me wonder if he really did have symptoms before traveling.

Did this person come to the US because he'd heard of successful stories of treatment?

I will now be ordering my groceries thru PeaPod.  I already have a milkman and Amazon prime. Anything I need pronto will be ordered online pick-up instore.  I am avoiding public places as much as possible.  This "mystery" virus that is paralyzing kids scares me too.  The 10 yr. girl that died was not far from me. I know someone else whose daughter had the virus and needed hospital treatment. We homeschool so at least I can control which kids mine comes in contact with.

just want to thank the o'bama administration, the airline co., tsa, and mr. duncan.

from whats called the most powerful person in the world, the president of usa, down to an individvual fleeing an african country knowing he's sick, very likely with ebola comming to america for a medical miracle, where were americas safety nets we were told were in place?

haven't heard, or read, tsa in any form, how many airline passengers come from western africa, he should've pulled to side and given a 2 min. check-up, or even just take his temp. that takes 2 sec..

we'll read, or hear reports with varing degrees of truth for another 5-6 wks., (election time remember), but it will at least show many millions of govt. denigration, but i'm sure, if one in your family doesn't be come infected with ebola no minds will change.

a person could comment all day long on this reprehesible, can't call it accidental, breakdown in govt..

Belgium and France have huge African communities.

Several flights weekly between West Africa and Brussels or Paris.

NO CASES IN EUROPE (or anywhere else outside West Africa besides the US)

Funny how .gov pounces on anything related to terrorism, but ignores a potential epidemic (other than ordering 160,000 hazmat suits for .gov employees). Wonder what 0's approval ratings will be if even a few hundred cases of Ebola pop up in the USA.

Knowingly bringing Ebola to another country is no different from knowingly giving someone AIDS. A charge of attempted murder, reckless endangerment, at the very least, if someone dies, a charge of manslaughter. This could be considered an act of terrorism.

Of course, charges like that'll never happen because of all the bleeding hearts. So, due to a few misguided people wanting to be "nice", thousands will likely die.
