Dallas: Workers Spray Ebola Patients’ Vomit Off of Sidewalk with Pressure Washer and No Protective Clothing (Photos and Video)

George Washington's picture

Ebola carrier Thomas Eric Duncan – the guy who brought Ebola to Dallas – vomited outside his apartment building.

A WFAA tv news chopper took the following photograph showing how workers are cleaning up the vomit:

Click for larger images.

Notice that the woman wearing sandals is about to step onto the run-off:

And here’s another screenshot showing a guy walking through the power-wash runoff:

Couldn’t they be tracking it on the bottom of their shoes as they
move around? What about the power-wash guys? Where did they go next?

That’s a pretty good way to spread Ebola … especially if experts are right that Ebola spreads through aerosols.

Similarly, the Ebola patient’s sweat-stained sheets were left on his bed for days without being removed … even though his family was quarantined in the same room.

As we noted yesterday, arrogance and carelessness may lead to unnecessary deaths.

Update: WFAA TV Dallas/Fort Worth Channel 8 news says that the Centers for Disease Control ordered the sidewalk to be power-washed:

Apparently, they didn't tell anyone to use protective suits, or to keep residents or passersby away while power-washing.

And from the casualness of the guys doing the power-washing, it is unlikely
that (1) they put any disinfectants in the power-washer or (2) they were even told what they were cleaning.

Heck of a job ...

Several years ago my son got a horrible respiratory infection while volunteering at a local animal shelter.

He had been instucted to pressure wash the concrete floors of the kennels.

Which is why you should never "pressure wash" any droplet-transmitted disease site... you are creating millions of droplets.

...the following might be a reach, but we need to get way outta the box and away from the Fed jerks running their circus.

Pretty much, the Dallas Ground Zero events have been discussed ad nauseum here on ZeroHedge since mid July! The BoneHeads in Charge just wanna suck up ass, get their retirement and play 9-18 holes of golf. Many of us have been thinking of many "what ifs." They are coming to pass.

The BIG smoking gun is the continued air travel between EbolaVille and major American cities. Beyond dumb. Makes sense because I am sure any alert mayor or head of airports got sat upon by the Crime Syndicate that has become Amerika.

Ever watch a heavily ladened air force plane take off with JATO bottles? Solid propellant to lurch that aircraft into the sky whereby the turbojet engines take over.

The Truly Evil Forces running rampant in our once great land just need 1-2 months of unregulated passengers from West Africa to show up and puke all over their cousins, nephews and any handy schoolroom. People are flipping out. The Dallas Deal is the JATO bottles boosting ebola off the runway. Pretty soon and by Halloween, a much more SINISTER virus waiting in the wings gets hatched and it is Game Over by the holidays roll around. Then ISIS (CIA-Langley lads) hit a few American cities with some baby nukes.

This would officially called "SHTF Moment." The Net goes down......

The economic consequence of acknowledging the dangers of this disease, as someone pointed out on another post, are dramatic as travel is curtailed, attendance at public events declines, and people, out of fear, begin to shelter in place.  For this reason, the government and CDC have been and will continue to be behind the spead of this disease, reacting instead of acting, which in the case of a deadly pathogen, such as Ebola, is a recipe for disaster.

The first thing people need to understand is the difference between airborne transmission and droplet transmission.  Ebola is easily transferred via bodily fluids.  This much everyone knows.  All human respiration, coughing, and sneezing contains small mucous particles, droplets.  In the case of someone infected with Ebola, these particles will contain the Ebola virus.  The question really is where can the Ebola virus "bind" with host cells and how much is required to create a likelihood of infection.  Can the Ebola virus bind with receptor sites in the nose, the sinus canals, the deep lungs?  This is the real question.  The virus is "airborne" in the sense that droplets can, and have been shown, to transmit the disease.  The question is how readily?  The other question is how likely is the virus to mutate into a form that can increase the likelihood of transmission?

What appears to be the case, at least for the moment, is that the virus is not "airborne" in the true sense of the word.  An "airborne" virus will remain suspended in air for long periods of time, after mucous droplets evaporate, since these viruses tend to be lighter than air.  If Ebola would ever go truly "airborne," without any loss of lethality, which seems unlikely, we would expect to see a substantial decline in the human population of the planet.

As it is, however, a disease that can readily transmit by droplets (which includes the common cold and most flus) can infect a very large number of people.  If Ebola is transmitting via droplets and it certainly seems to be, at least to some limited extent, the cavalier attitude of CDC and .gov are creating a situation in which I would expect to see millions of U.S. citizens die.  Absolutely unbelievable really.  But the last thing .gov and CDC want is "panic," which could hurt the economy, especially bad in an election year.

This disease needs to be taken very seriously, at least until scientific research has determined how readily it is transmitted with some certainty.  As it stands now, the U.S. government is playing dice with the lives of millions of its citizens.

Reminds me of the movie Jaws -- only we have a killer virus instead of a killer shark.  In both cases the authorities want to want to keep the lid on it to avoid panic and prevent economic loss.  Which of course will result in more deaths.

A lot of people are realizing this was "no boating accident".

Even if one suspects this is a false flag conjured up to instill fear and redirect attention from something else, some of the statements from Frieden are preposterous. For example, he said something to the effect that the flight numbers are irrelevent and kept secret. How fucking stupid do you have to be to believe that?

We know that the financial meltdown and the whole TBTF bailout bullshit along with the crap-ass SEC, OCC, DOJ, etc. not finding anyone guilty of anything got a slide. Maybe this shit will make people angry enough to roll some heads. I doubt it but you never know.

Just the facts...

PATHOGEN SAFETY DATA SHEET - EBOLAVIRUS
http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/lab-bio/res/psds-ftss/ebola-eng.php

"INFECTIOUS DOSE: Viral hemorrhagic fevers have an infectious dose of 1 - 10 organisms by aerosol in non-human primates."

Am I reading that right? Does that mean that a single virus can cause an infection?

More fun facts about Ebola...

INCUBATION PERIOD: Two to 21 days

COMMUNICABILITY: Communicable as long as blood, body fluids or organs, contain the virus. Ebolavirus has been isolated from semen 61 to 82 days after the onset of illness, and transmission through semen has occurred 7 weeks after clinical recovery.

SURVIVAL OUTSIDE HOST: Filoviruses have been reported capable to survive for weeks in blood.

INFECTIOUS DOSE: Viral hemorrhagic fevers have an infectious dose of 1 - 10 organisms by aerosol in non-human primates.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION: ... In laboratory settings, non-human primates exposed to aerosolized ebolavirus from pigs have become infected, however, airborne transmission has not been demonstrated between non-human primates. Viral shedding has been observed in nasopharyngeal secretions and rectal swabs of pigs following experimental inoculation.

PRIMARY HAZARDS: Accidental parenteral inoculation, respiratory exposure to infectious aerosols/droplets, and/or direct contact with skin or mucous membranes.

Nearly 100% likelihood that the vomit on the ground, a few days later, contained viable Ebola-virus. Nearly 100% likelihood that pressure-washing aerosolized some of it. Chances that someone inhaled the viable aerosolized virus... I guess we'll know in a few weeks. Of course, over the next few weeks, a lot of those people may leave town, in fear for their safety. Who knows where it'll pop up, next...? Who knows if they speak English, trust emergency services, or even know the phone number for 911.  It seems like our patient zero would have died in the apartment if his family didn't call CDC, then follow up with county public health dept. How many "real 'mericans" wouldn't even know to do that? Or wouldn't bother?

Not to worry of course. I'm sure none of the Ebola patients being transported to the US, UK, DE, etc will be shedding virus for weeks or months after they're symptom free. Once they're cured, they're cured... Right? At least that's what "the govt" is telling us.

"Am I reading that right? Does that mean that a single virus can cause an infection?"

Umm, yes! Really, one is all it takes...of course, most times the immune system can handle the odd virus or two with no problem. But a lot of people have compromised immune systems, so yeah...just one healthy virus can start a thriving colony, very quickly.

They'll get quarintined after the symptoms appear, and they've transferred the virus to several others by then.  From what I'm seeing so far, Ebola is going to like this country.  We all hear the focus on Africa as a place conducive to the spread of disease.  But: You don't unsanitary conditions, trash everywhere, lack of medical care.  All you need is ignorance.

This vid is beyond unbelievable if it really is a vid of someone power-spraying his ebo-vomit.

If you need to aerosolize something, blasting the crap out of it with a high-pressure hose is a pretty good way of doing that I would wager. I am still gob-smacked watching this. Unbelievable.

If they poured bleach on the sidewalk before starting, they're okay. If they waited a while before starting, they might be okay. It's an RNA virus that isn't stable in the environment. The relative instability of RNA combined with naturally occuring RNase literally everywhere means it doesn't last long. That is why you generally need direct contact to contract it as it won't last long on surfaces.

If they walked up to a pile of vomit and pressure sprayed it, I'd guess that they were significantly exposed and should be quarantined. Unbelievable if that is how it happened.

I disagree. Humans always give inadequate responses to never-before faced threats. And so governments and corporations. They are people, too (wink, wink)

I know, this goes against the grain of seeing a plan behind every tree, but again, I don't see it as stupid, just as inadequate because of the relative novelty of the thing

I'm not a medical doctor, but some serious people in that field told me that if people would just wash their hands as often as mama told them to do, we'd have half as much diseases as we do

I could as well question if this measure is really that inadequate. Really Stupid would have been to leave that vomit there, or wait too long to clean it up

from the perspective of a virus, water is the enemy number one, followed by soap, followed by basic hygiene, followed by disinfectants, followed by common sense

HazMat Suits or even rubber boots might figure later on that list. feel free to correct me if your are an expert on epidemics

Ghordius - an excellent post as usual. I can't cite the source at the moment but @ 10 years ago I came across a journal article that discussed handwashing practices by age, race and gender in the US and the conclusions were that less than 50% of old white guys wash their hands after taking a dump or peeing while over 80% of black males of all ages wash their hands frequently during the day. (Because their Mamas, many of whom worked cleaning bathrooms all their lives, know the real story.)

Women of all ages/races were pretty high on the hand-washing list too.

The moral of the story - old white guys are disease carriers.

I'll never forget the first time I visited Germany - as I was leaving the railway station restroom having used the toilet (and washed my hands) a rather large old women barged past me as I was leaving carrying her pail and bucket and glaring at me - she seemed certain that I had somehow dirtied her pristine restroom.
