NBC Cameraman Covering The Ebola Outbreak In Liberia Tests Positive For The Virus

Tyler Durden's picture

Now that the seal has been broken, the American Ebola cases are coming fast and furious, and a few days after the first case of the deadly disease made its way to US soil, overnight we learned that an American cameraman helping to cover the Ebola outbreak in Liberia for NBC News has tested positive for the virus and will be flown back to the United States for treatment.

The news broke late last night, when NBC reported that the freelancer, Ashoka Mukpo, 33, was hired Tuesday to be a second cameraman for NBC News Chief Medical Editor and Correspondent Dr. Nancy Snyderman. Snyderman is with three other NBC News employees on assignment in Monrovia, reporting on the Ebola outbreak.

Mukpo came down with symptoms on Wednesday, feeling tired and achy. As part of a routine temperature check, he discovered he was running a slight fever. He immediately quarantined himself and sought medical advice. On Thursday morning, Mukpo went to a Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) treatment center to be tested for the virus. The positive result came back just under 12 hours later.

"The good news is this young man, our colleague, was admitted very, very early," Snyderman told Rachel Maddow Thursday evening. "He's in good spirits." The better news is that he was isolated while still offshore, meaning he will enter the US under controlled terms.

Snyderman added she and the other members of the NBC News team are feeling well and not showing symptoms of the Ebola virus but are going beyond CDC guidelines for their and others' safety.

Mukpo will be the fifth American infected with Ebola and evacuated from West Africa. He has been working in Liberia on various projects for the past three years.

"The doctors are optimistic about his prognosis," Mukpo's father, Mitchell Levy, said in a message to family and friends. Levy said his son, who also is a writer, "has been engaged with human rights work in West Africa for the last several years. When the Ebola outbreak occurred he felt compelled to return to Liberia to help shed light on how the crisis was being handled socially and politically."

In a note to staff, NBC News President Deborah Turness said: "We are doing everything we can to get him the best care possible. He will be flown back to the United States for treatment at a medical center that is equipped to handle Ebola patients.

"We are also taking all possible measures to protect our employees and the general public," Turness added in the note. "The rest of the crew, including Dr. Nancy, are being closely monitored and show no symptoms or warning signs. However, in an abundance of caution, we will fly them back on a private charter flight and then they will place themselves under quarantine in the United States for 21 days — which is at the most conservative end of the spectrum of medical guidance."

American aid workers Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol were infected in July while working for Samaritan’s Purse in Monrovia. Last month, Dr. Rick Sacra was diagnosed with the virus after working at a local hospital in Liberia. A U.S. physician who had been working for the World Health Organization and who has not been named is being treated at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan is currently being treated for Ebola at a hospital in Dallas. In addition, a U.S. physician who was exposed to Ebola in Sierra Leone is under observation at the National Institutes of Health.

Here is the full text of Turness’ note to NBC News staff:

As you know, Dr. Nancy Snyderman and our news team are in Liberia covering the Ebola outbreak. One of the members of their crew is an American freelance cameraman who has worked in Liberia for the past three years and has recently been covering the epidemic for US media outlets. On Tuesday he began working with our team. Today, he tested positive for Ebola.

We are doing everything we can to get him the best care possible. He will be flown back to the United States for treatment at a medical center that is equipped to handle Ebola patients. We are consulting with the CDC, Medicins Sans Frontieres and others. And we are working with Dr. Nancy on the ground in Liberia.

We are also taking all possible measures to protect our employees and the general public. The rest of the crew, including Dr. Nancy, are being closely monitored and show no symptoms or warning signs. However, in an abundance of caution, we will fly them back on a private charter flight and then they will place themselves under quarantine in the United States for 21 days – which is at the most conservative end of the spectrum of medical guidance.

We know you share our concern for our colleagues and we will continue to keep you up to date and informed. Please don't hesitate to reach out to me or David Verdi with any questions.

Deborah

Ask the CDC about the ebola patent....more importantly...ask them about the royalty on any vaccine.

Dumbfuk Obama won't admit it is airborne.  Even if it is not airborne, which it is, it should be treated like it is.  So what is the point of all the lying?  These asswipes are worried panic will effect the economy and make stocks go down.  Guess what asswipes?  It is going to happen whether you lie about it or not.  No one is going to be flying anywhere pretty soon,

Not to piss on your bunker door, but if this was truly airborne there would millions of cases in Africa and hundreds to thousands in the U.S. from Tom Duncan alone. Easy to catch from a cough or a sneeze; yes. Truly airborne; not yet.

That case has been posted hundreds of times already. How about some common sense. You do understand that if it was truly airborne, the infected numbers would be exponentially higher. That's all you need to know.

Luckily if it is airborne, Africa is not overcrowded and has all the amenities of modern life.

The expansion rate for this bug does not match an airborne vector.  Let's hope it stays that way.

"It depends on what the definition of 'is', is."

Tell you what, champ...if you want to apply some strict (albeit arguable) definition of "airborne", I must insist that you back it up with corresponding behavior. That is, do not hesitate to enter a room with an ebola infected person in it. Feel free to ride on a plane carrying stricken passengers. Stand around the watercooler and shoot the shit with your missionary coworker who just returned from spreading the word on the Dark Continent.

NONE of these things involve french-kissing, toilet seat sharing, or even a damned hand shake, so you will be fine.

If you would hesitate to do these things, take your definition and shove it.

Quinvarius's picture

I don't agree on the new definition of airborne that the government is trying to push.  If you can catch it from sneeze droplets, it has always been considered airborne.  And rightly so, because that is transmission from one person to another, via the air.

It's gotten a bit bigger than previous Ebola epidemics, and has the potential to be much bigger than previous ones.  Yet...previous ones were TINY.

I still would like people to stop scaring people about this.  Since this coverage started, there have been millions of deaths from various diseases.  A few Americans have gotten Ebola.  Most have recovered.  It doesn't spread easily.  In urban Nigeria, they contained an outbreak.  America has little in common with rural African villages.

And pharmaceutical companies don't seem to regard this as a major challenge, unlike say HIV.  They have developed both successful treatments and successful vaccines.

Meanwhile there is lots of other [stuff] to fret about.

EBOLA AMNESTY: Feds won't deport Liberian immigrants

Gov't lets Liberians stay in US amid Ebola crisis
Associated Press
By ALICIA A. CALDWELL Friday Sept 26 2014

WASHINGTON (AP) — Liberian immigrants living in the United States without a visa won't be sent back to the epicenter of Ebola crisis in West Africa for at least another two years, the Obama administration said Friday.

President Barack Obama signed a memo extending a legal protection called "deferred enforced departure" that continues a protection from deportation that has been in place for more than a decade.

The government first granted Liberians temporary protective status during that country's bloody civil war, which started in 1991 and ended in 2003.

IMO your cue for an epidemic is when it hits the 2nd and 3rd city which will either come this coming week or the next. If you see that then it's loose and beyond their ability to contain. At that point he who panics first panics best and it's time to either make plans to bug in or bug out as quickly as possible. There will be a lot of people a month or two after that wishing they'd have done so.

The government full out lies about this kind of shit, particularly a month before an important election which will most likely decide control of CONgress and possible impeachment of The President (even though I don't believe the GOP has the stones or the will to do that). The dems have a serious agenda they are trying to push and it's all on the line now with maintaining the senate. You bet your ass they will sacrifice the safety of every American to maintain it and push that agenda through.

The wake up call for preps was 2 years ago. Anyone not prepared now with no plan for evac or bug-in has nobody to blame but themselves. If it's not this scenario then it will be another one soon enough as the world seems to be spiraling out of control quicker and quicker for whatever reason.

"However, in an abundance of caution, we will fly them back on a private charter flight and then they will place themselves under quarantine in the United States for 21 days — which is at the most conservative end of the spectrum of medical guidance."

Hardly the most conservative end of guidance...lets see, 'the company' picks up a new cameraman, whom becomes infected, and 'the management' decides it is best to ship them all to a different continent, for quarantine.   What the hell was wrong with quarantine on the African continent?

I can see their routine decision to infect another continent, is based on the other 4 existing cases of Ebola on the N. American continent, (and TV ratings of course)!  This is directly linked to the Milton Friedman Distaster Capitalism playbook, pp. 23., (just before the 2nd chapter: How Insurance Makes Everything Right).

No hazmat suit and a fucking spray washer. Proof that Dallas county is run by hillbilly morons(dont want to here anything from assholes from dallas as I live there).

Yesterday it was announced that Judge Clay Jenkins went to the ebola patients apartment and went in without hazmat suit or protection of any kind(I believe he had other officials with him but not sure on that), then went and gave a press conference about how under control things are with the mayor and other officials in the room(if he spreads anything I hope his family is the first to catch it and the other officials in the room second). They also dispatched sheriffs deputies without any protection and they went into the apartment as well(their squad cars have now been pulled from service, not sure about the deputies themselves). The official response has shown that these people have no clue at all and if there is any protocol they are not following it. Boyscouts could do a better job than these idiots. If this spreads I know who I will hold accountable. This virus should have never made it to USA. The people in charge wanted it here to start a panic and or epidemic so the can gain more control and "save everyone". Other countries and airlines have stopped service to those countries that are infected, why not usa? You know who is responsable for this entering the usa and it is the same people who allow illegal aliens in everyday. Treason is what it is called.

So there are 4 people in the apartment where the Liberian was staying. Two young men (nephews), his woman friend (sometimes they say she is a wife; this may be a muslim thing? multiple wives?), and a child. Now I may be wrong, but since none of these people have yet to show symptoms, shouldn't the CDC have isolated each of them separately? And is not failing to isolate them separately the equivalent of a death sentance if someone else comes down with it in the apartment; in other words, they may have been exposed to Duncan but not have gotten the virus from him but by placing them in a (what is the equivalent) of a closed test tube, they are being...potentially...exposed again and again to the virus is one of them, mostly likely the woman, comes down with it.

Since the woman probably had sex with him, and we know that sperm is loaded with ebola virus, she is most likely to come down with the virus. It seems clear that the man is going to die and here is what Frieden says, "“It’s the first time we’re having Ebola in this country and the challenges are real in terms of what do you do with the waste, how do you move it, how do you dispose of it and we want to make sure that everything is done correctly,” Frieden said. “I’m confident that will get sorted out today.” (from Yahoo news)

Now seriously, how stupid can you be? You are Paid every month to prepare for these things and yet today, after ebola is rampant in Liberia, after we are sending our Troops to Liberia, the Idiot Frieden is Just getting around to thinking about this. Govt workers: The stupidest money can hire!

Get inside a CGA .This should better your chance of survival .

What to expect as derived from past occurrences of bad plagues :

1.Indifference switches to mass hysteria .

2.A big Hysterical Focus forms . See http://andreswhy.blogspot.com/2014/06/the-quiet-revolution.html )

3.Controlled Geographical Areas (CGA's) will form . Basically , fenced quarantine areas .

Join one of the saner churches . Insanity was a najor killer , especially in the Black Death .

See  http://andreswhy.blogspot.com/2005/11/birdflu-survival-update-5.htmlThe critical bit :

"5 Some consequences:

a During the pandemic , the more successful CGA’s will be under severe volkewanderung pressure . Tough times .

b Initially , the global trade system will collapse . Decreased population leads to decreased demand . Highly automated production systems are little affected . Massive deflation results . The cost of labour (especially in the highest mortality low-skilled labour brackets ) rockets (like in Black death) .

Nation-States collapse , as they are perceived as not keeping the intrinsic contract of protection and not starving their people regardless of the level of taxation. It is a massive tax-revolt .
It is analogous to the anti-church movement that swept Europe after the Black Death . The Church did not keep it’s part of the bargain and the populace voted with their feet(and pockets) . In general , surviving people all over will feel very , very pissed-off and betrayed .

Betrayed by Science , Church and Leaders . A deep revulsion against anything Big , Scientific or For Your Own Good . Small-scale warfare will become endemic , with the present trend to condottieri accellerating sharply ."

Carry a good spade .

Godd luck .

with all those 'level 4' cdc centers built to the tune of BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, you'd think people infected with ebola would be brought to an offshore u.s. military installation like guantanamo or better yet, diego garcia for treatment.

why they insist on bring them back to the u.s. where they insist on having to worry about what happens if the disease spreads, seems bizarre. then again. perhaps ebola actually ISN'T that dangerous. and much of this fear mongering is a HUGE lie.

Let's assume Ebola turns out to be quite virulent in the US.  Is there any clear mechanism for accountability for those appointed and elected officials who refused to take the risk seriously?  What about for those folks who OKed the return of the Ebola sufferers for treatment?  When there is no downside in terms of personal accountability, and there is a perception of mild to strong political pressure to bring 'em back, of course they will wave 'em through.

Obama is guilty of misfeasance and malfeasance in office. He is a criminal.

In addition, he is committing second-degree murder under cover of law on everyone who dies from these diseases his reckless policies allowed into the country - Yes, he is guilty of Second Degree Murder: death by reckless indifference to life.

We have reached the point where we tell the Black Racists who support him to go to He11. We tell the Hispanic Racists, the Gay Mafia, the Obamabots, the MSM, the Hollywood celebrities, and any dumba$$ federal cops who defend him to do the same.

We show up at our congressional delegations Town Hals - and their offices in their districts and if we have to - we sit in until the pressure can't be resisted.

If they can mobilize in Hong Kong - we can mobilize to save our lives, the lives of our children, grandchildren, extended family, and the rest of humanity in America.

This transcends politics - this is a genuine life or death crisis. Obama must be removed from office because he is insane - literally - with desire to import all the illegals he can get over the border and use them to open the door to Death in America.

Obama must go. He is aiding and abetting mass homicide in America through insane policies concerning an open invasion of illegals carrying not just this, but God knows what other diseases.

Black Racists, Hispanic Racists (especially the ultra-racist La Raza), gay heterophobic hate-speakers, MSM propagandists, political hacks, air-for-brains cops, kiss-up military flag officers . . . it's over for Obama. Move out of the way, or watch society overwhelm you.

Get rid of him peacefully, or be prepared to see America erupt into a blazing fire of violence against *you* for trying to keep him around.

What kind of quarantine allows people with symptoms to up and kite across the planet back home?  And what kind of quarantine allows healthy subjects to flow freely in and out of quarantine areas?  That's not a quarantine, its open season.

Obama sending 1,000's of men into the quarantine area is wreckless.  Less people entering an infected region is better; not more people entering the area.  It appears a better idea to not allow anyone entering quarantine to leave instead of rolling more healthy hosts into the mix.  For Pete's sake, even the researchers are dying.

If this cameraman got a pass to run back home, how many other travelers got passes out of quarantine?  How many infected people are traveling freely without knowledge by health authorities or citizens?

Africa's Ebola outbreak is open season not a quarantine and official mis-mangement of the Ebola situation is evolving into the most ludicrous and sterling exhibition of inadequate training, incapacity, and neglect.
