People don't like atheists cause they can't come to terms with the fact that there is no god and their life becomings meaningless. Doomed to be a slave to the status quo.

Free yourself from religion and you see that it's this life, and only this life that matters.

There is no forgiveness, second chances or afterlife.

Learn to cherish your one and only life.

"Nobody has disproved God yet, so that's not really what I'd call a 'fact'."

True, true...  But no one has disproved Zeus sitting atop Mount Olympus, Xenu and his thetans being continually reborn, Joseph Smith finding golden tablets in upstate New York, and so on and so forth.

Believing in comforting myths, regardless of facts, seems to be a hardwired feature of the human brain.

Athiests are the most willfully blind and arrogant of all; since they claim to know there can't possibly be a creator despite the scale and complexity of the universe.

I also find it amusing how dogmatically they defend their 'belief' (or lack thereof) and attack anyone who does believe in a creator. If they truly believe in no god, no afterlife, no eternal system of punishments/rewards; why should they care whether somebody else does?

On the other hand, I respect agnostics for admitting that they just don't know and can't be sure...

But moar so because teaching belief in a god instills a sense of dependency on some higher power instead of individual responsibility

It turns people into sheeple who will also believe the government will solve all their problems for them as well.

Sheeple don't like nor want to know the facts about anything cause it means they must deal with them and reality.

They only want to BELIEVE in something no matter how stupid it really is.

Religions have existed since the earliest civilizations and probably before. Trashing religion is kind of like trashing the founding principles of a nation after it's become successful abiding by those principles. How can you possible fathom history without religion? How can you possible assert that humanity would be better without it? It's like imagining humanity without art or math.

I don't see the connection between fear = more lies.

The truth is terrifying enough; enough so that the establishment lies every day about the world we live in.

I would say that fear is in fact the result of MORE truth.

Fear comes when one is not, or believes not to be, in control and NOT only because of the possibility of very bad outcomes.

Knowing the truth (which often turns out to be surprisingly simple) gives you back control, which why it has to be obscured by more and more lies so the masses never discover the truth or don't realize it actually is the truth.

THIS is absolutely correct.  Horrors committed and more slain by non-believers by a large margin, atheists cannot seem to conceive of some thing larger than self,  a fundamental flaw imho.   The universe of nearly infinite size and wonder, oh yeah just sprang into being, no prime mover needed, completely random...  Stick around kiddies, later today a supernova will fly out my ass, randomly of course..

How many people did atheists kill?

Well, lets make a rough count.

Soviet atheists killed about 25 million.

Chinese atheists killed about, I don't know, maybe another 30 million.

Nazis (who were anti-religious, but professed a kind of self invented religion; much like atheists) killed another 50 million or so.

I think we can safely say that atheists have been either directly or indirectly responsible for a good 100 million deaths in just the 20th century alone.

After seeing all the godtalk in this thread, one more time, I present some of my standard deductions (ba-dum-pish!):

- The act of computation requires a result to arrive to, and that result belongs to the result space called truth.
- Truth has two absolute boundaries, true and false, with an infinitely granular result space in between. The scale is adjustable (0 to 1, or -1 to 1, etc.).
- Mathematics (probability) uses the notion of truth, i.e. it is a subset of truth. Mathematical computations produce truth state results.

From the above points, it should be obvious that something as measly as this particular universe does not constitute even a tenth of a tenth of a tenth of a tenth of.. a percent of truth's event space.

This "god" called truth is truly (pardon my introduction of probability) standalone.

Um I would respectfully disagree there is a big difference between Truth and Facts.  Let me elaborate.....

To chirstians Jesus is the son of god, damn the facts that is their TRUTH

To muslims mohammed is the messenger of god damn the facts that is their TRUTH

Both of these groups are willing to fight to the DEATH to defend those 'Truth's'  --  For me I don't truly know what the reality is as I have never met either and as convoluted, misinterpreted, reprinted and interpreted all great religious texts are, how do we know where the Lies and and the Truth begins?  We don't there is no way to know, I could go on and on and on, but lets keep it simple.....

Someone PLEASE explain to me how the Council of Nicea was not as 'political' as our healthcare debate was.  It is pretty much 100% agreed that 'they' voted on what was/is in the bible, so how in any good conscious can anyone take what is in that book as the word of god?  Just this fact alone should be enough for one to question the validity of their beLIEf system.  If religious people are so certain of their belief system then why not keep it 100% away from your children until they are 18 and let them decide for themselves if they want to beLIEve?  No that never happens because the health of all religions lies in the securing of young minds before they have the power to reason and controlling it with FEAR!  I would be willing to bet that if for just one generation we kept religion from children very few would choose to adopt it on their own when the reached the age of maturity, as religion relies upon beLIEf, not facts, logic and reason.

Just my 2c YMMV

Dawg you're missing the point entirely by using the word "truth" in its most superficial instantiation. Try considering my usage of the word in the instantation of the context I have presented - you will likely find different results.

To put you on the right path, I will say that any "facts" or "fictions," as people express them, are ordered sequences or series of four-dimensional truth states. Start from there.

Skateboarder - you put up some good posts. Really. But this just doesn't make sense.

If I punch you in the head, the truth is I punched you. The falsehood is that I didn't. Where is the "infinite granular result space in between" the two statements?

Mon, 10/06/2014 - 03:19 | 5293391 Skateboarder
Skateboarder's picture

You are only seeing the end result, whether I got punched or not. The very act of that punching is composed of the series of 4-D events starting with your first muscle twitch to your last one in that "punch." How far do you want to divide each of those time slices? Beyond Planck time? Each one of those momentary universal snapshots are the overall computational response of the 'universe' as you know it.

Obviously people are failing to grasp the presented notion conveyed by a word whose meaning is subjective to begin with.

I guess I shouldn't open my mouth in the godtalk space to begin with. Carry on, gentlement. Don't mind me.

Their are religions of more and less maturity and modernity. The issue is force, be it by a religious faction of modern Islam or Marxism. All beliefs, even atheism, are a "religion" in that they each compile their own "truth documents" and then gather force to attempt to impose them on others, either through law or so please derision. Refer to our latest crop of "deniers" and how they are treated. The image of a truly enlightened society should freedom, but is one persons freedom is another person's threat.

I am still waiting for the PROOF that 'God' Exists, cause that fucker sure wasn't around when I was in the Gulf War watching too many of my friends die f'ed up deaths.  Now to be fair I do feel there is a 'Creator" which is very different then the 'god' I was bullied into beLIEving in during my Cathloic upbringing.  If that fucker does exist and I ever run into him/her/them I certainly have some questions and issues with them/it.

Why I feel there is a 'Creator' and not a god is that the creator created and stepped back and we are on our own, god implies way too much control for my taste.  Also this whole god worship/fear crapola goes to my overall attitude about parenthood.  Would you rather your children Fear you or RESPECT you?  For me I'd rather have RESPECT then Fear, so I respect the Creator, and do not fear it/him/her, as I do not think they/it/whatever wants our fear but rather our respect.  But all of these 'gods' seem to rely upon Fear as a control mechanism rather then earning our Respect.  YMMV

Yes, autocrats are oppressive and many bad ones in history. However, the modern national/soviet/maoist socialist state with the ruthless support of an official state party jails, kills and tortures like few other. Cambodia killed almost 25% of its own people. Genghis Khan was ruthless but not to his own. The Romans were no shrinking violets but they did not spend lots of time killing Romans. They killed rivals to the throne. N. Korea is a self imposed prison state like most of the communist countries of the last century.

Clever comment, except there is a vast difference between man and human.

We still live in man's world, which is the problem, and not a human world, which is the solution. Human behavior is the thin veneer of civilization, man's behavior is the opposite.

Man appears to be the missing link between anthropoid apes and human beings.
— Konrad Lorenz

http://todayinsci.com/L/Lorenz_Konrad/LorenzKonrad-

Also the so-called human race is basically physically monolithic, it is only divided into ingroups and outgroups by man's primitive beliefs.

- I might add that Christ's vision of how to live approaches that of a human world.

The concept of a personal god was a crucial factor in allowing early government structures to grow.

An early settlement culture could grow faster, be stronger, and survive better if it were able to incorporate conquered hunter-gatherer tribes - who were very often mutual enemies - into its population. Like with immigration. A local personal god provided a control for their mutual (outgroup) hatred and at the same time channeled that hatred towards competing (outgroup) towns, cities, city-states and their competing (outgroup) personal god.

So instead of killing the vanquished for being a dangerous enemy, they became a resource to be used as slaves or soldiers of the rulers and wealthy. Eventually they could attain the status of a citizen, even a ruler, of the state.

Of course this is still going on, although the religious beliefs have largely been replaced by political beliefs. As such, Islam is a religious enemy and Russia is a political enemy.

The "no God" perspective requires a personal denial of the historical documentation of the life of Jesus Christ.

Its ok, lets just call it what it is.

I went through a phase of this in college, but the evidence in favor of His life being an actual historical event, along with his execution under the historical documented Roman ruler Pontus Pilate causes reconsideration.

Here we have a Jewish state under Roman Rule and the Jewish leaders persuade the Roman Ruler to execute a rebel.

All his followers go into hiding for a short season out of terrible fear of similar execution.

But then his followers reappear, the same individuals, and proclaim the most incredible outlandish account of Christ risen from the grave.

(WTF!!! right?)

So these same followers are so adamant about their conviction this event took place they are no longer afraid of what the Jewish religious leaders will do to neither them *stone them for blasphemy) nor the Romans who like to get gruesome.

In recorded histories from this era we have writings that the Romans and Jews put these followers to death, and in cruel and unusual ways.

Throughout history men have died for causes they believed in. communism, fascism, liberty, Islam, etc.

Men will dies for a cause they believe in, no matter how misguided. Men will die for something they believe is true.

Men will die for their country when the choice is to be shot by your own officers, or take you chances with the "enemy"

But Men will not die for a lie when they know it is a lie,(except maybe for their own children or dearest loved one  eg. Dickens- Tale of Two Cities fictional account)

So we are left with the question, What drove the original followers of this Jesus all proclaim his life after death event?

If it was all a lie they could recant and avoid the heinous slow death by roman execution, or being tossed in the arena with wild animals or being stoned as a blasphemer by their own Jewish peers. No one coerced them to go through the humiliation and death of being a member of this new sect. These folks voluntarily accepted outcast and persecution and hideous forms of execution rather than recant their outlandish claim about Jesus Christ.

The original followers of Christ are historically documented outside the bible in the Jewish Historical writings of Josephus’s (circa 70 AD) and in Roman documents as having been put to death for this proclamation of Jesus status as not dead, and of some great importance to the next life for all of us.

The death of the early followers is a testimony which must be considered.

This is just one example of the cause for a Historical Jesus Christ being the objection to a “No God” theory.

If we on ZH claim to be enlightened and intellectual, able to see past the BS of the media and government we need to also be able to make a logical investigation into this historical account.

There is a small easy to read book by an author who set out to disprove the account of Christ’s life but was overwhelmed with the evidence in favor of his life. It literally sickened him to learn that all his atheist views he held so dear could not stand up to the evidence.

http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/313631.More_Than_a_Carpenter

Before we refute the existence of God further, I would humbly submit we take a look at the concepts put forth in this book, and if someone can win a debate against each and every topic the author presents we have a starting point on the plausible deniability of the existence of deity.

THERE IS NO HISTORY!!!!!!   THERE IS NO WRITTEN RECORD IN THE 1ST CE!!!!!

NO ROMAN HISTORIAN ALIVE IN THE 1ST CE EVER PENNED ANYTHING ABOUT JEEZUS...

THERE IS NO GOSPEL AVAILABLE PRIOR TO THE 4TH CENTURY CE!!!

E.g., 3 Wise Men?  A Mithraic Myth.

Here's another.  Christmass previously known soley as December 25th, was the WINTER SOLSTICE on the JULIAN CALENDAR; and stayed that way until approx. 1598CE when the Gregrorian Calendar was set in place.

P.S.  Another reason why the PEW Poll is Fraudulent.  Mormons, founded by a Fraud (and Real Estate Banking Fraud as well), a twice escaped Felon, a BS Artists (Egyptian Glyphs, Mid-South American Fairie Tales tying JEEZUS and JEWISH LOST TRIBES to them, thrice evicted from regions, and surrender-monkeyed to the Governor of Illinois - with only 15 Million People - is rated just below 50 and above Hindus, Muslims and Atheists.

I know a lot more honest Atheists (who STILL would rather live uprightly) than what I've encountered from thieving, stalking, proselytizing Mormons.

i am sorry you are upset, but your information is inaccurate or possibly just out of date.

Josephus was a Roman Jewish historian in the 1st century. who wrote on the topic of Jesus, but was not a convert himself.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephus_on_Jesus

There are many early church manuscripts which have been unearthed in the 20th and 21st century which are from the peiod before coucil of Nicea

http://earlychristianwritings.com/

and

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_manuscript#New_Testament_manuscripts

each year more manuscripts are discovered. and we have original documents starting from 125AD

Yes it is true Christmas on 12/25 is not the accurate date for Christ's birth.

Yes the three wise man narrative " The Maji" does exist in the New Testament.

The most efficient way to obtain a historical, logical view of what Chrsitains believe is of course to read the Bible. the Gospel of John is a good begining.

For some intellectual discourse on why the New Testament is a valid document to consider, and why Christ is a valid historical figure to be study one could start with "More Than A Carpenter" by Josh McDowell

http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?Ntt=more+than+a+c...

This is an incredibly easy read, but brings to light some very valid points for those who have an antagonistic view of Jesus.

I sincerely hope the best for you.

You MUST be deluded.

All of Josephus' Entries published in the 4thCE onwards contained those comments allegedly about JEEZUS; but the comments were forgeries based on 1) anachronistic prose and 2) 3rd CE and earlier Editions didn't contain them.

Several Historians were referencing Chrestus, not Christ.  Two separate entities.  Chrestus' references had the "i" written over the "e" a few times.  The name Chrestus means "Good" and/or "Useful".   Dumbass Xians wanted to lump them together; but that's pretty much what Xianity is.

Take the Challenge looking for an historical documents at the claimed times of early 1st CE - since there is none.  No documents supporting it, nor are there any documents denouncing it.  Absolutely nothing.

Evil misguided men will do great evil.

However the story does not end with the martydom of believers.

atheists are straight up fools preening in their midget "human" suits of pride and decay...Atheism is akin to a sparrow denying the existence of the sky or a fish-the Ocean

Man is an incredibly small yardstick with which to measure CREATION...that's right...as in "a Created universe".

Did creation take 6 days or a Trillion? Who knows, who cares...

all anyone needs to now is that it WAS Created...take your own "spiritual" jouney from there, starting from the evidence of a massive, unfathomable shadow we call GOD....

Atheists believe in nothing and, as a result, they believe in everything... that's one of their problems. Since they don't have a minimal core of common values, they find themselves in a permanent war with the rest of the world AND among themselves. Finally, atheism is very hard to reconcile with the human mind natural need for hope and purpose. There is nothing more damaging to the human psyche than dry materialism. It's a perfect recipe for arrogance, unhapiness, and depression... That's why many of them are always angry, and poised to prove you wrong.

Most of the wars I've read about were about "My god is better than your god".

Here is the deal.  Everybody gets to find out the ultimate secret.

For the believers, you are either going to be happy to be back home, very sorry for being an asshole, or you will experience some phenomena that humanity has guessed about since day 1...and you will know just how wrong humanity´s multiple guesses have been.

For the non-believers, you are either going to be enveloped in blackness as your auditory nerves send the last impulses of sound to your failing brain, or your going to have one hell of a shock.  Hopefully, in case the latter happens, you were not an asshole during life.

As his cancer progressed, Steve Jobs seemed to have a 50/50 view about the afterlife.  Here is a minute or so starting at 11:02 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXcfDN6L9d8

Even though he explored Buddhism during his life, he struggled with the topic.  When his time finally came however, he left us with this....and it doesn´t sound like he was experiencing an "on-off switch".

Steve Jobs's last words: 'Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.'

No, people "don't like" atheists because they sound like you, claiming that their opinion is "fact". For instance, you say "there is no forgiveness". Wrong! We forgive you for stating such twaddle. Also, to think that this life, this "tale told by an idiot" according to Mr. Shakespeare, is all you've got is ludicrous. This is our OPINION.

I'll be quick to assume you know you're due to kick the bucket.

Hopefully when your life flashes before your eyes you have plenty to watch.

Religion is a scam. You were raised to believe a certain thing and never questioned it. You followed a false idol and eventually your time will come.

I don't blame you for being scared for not cherishing the only life you have.

I pitty you for believing all your sins will be forgiven, that you will be with your loved ones soon enough and will continue in the afterlife. Or that you will be reincarnated, or maybe your soul will go into resting until you are reincarnated.

Then again with all these "religions" you can't be so certain you followed the right one.

You've made my point TD, born a serf and will die a serf.

You know NOTHING about us, punk. "I'll be quick to assume...". Never assume anything! Have you learned nothing? You were called out because you stated your opinion as fact. This is an intellectual blunder. You claim to KNOW what happens after death. We would never do that. Listen to your tone, so harsh, accusatory, aggressive; so full of (false) assumptions, so emotional. Are you a progressive? We are neither scared nor a serf, Child.

Depends I've been on this site long enough.

You guys are quick to call foul with the government, that there must be agenda, a game is afoot.

There are TPTB and you question your government and current events in the world as a red herring, another false flag.

Yet when it comes to religion and questioning it you use your 'faith' instead of common sense that you use for everything else in this world. TPTB, government, FED, ect.

Try thinking objectively. It works better than your blind sense to follow your faith.

Don't believe them - they are liars of the highest order. Every day in church they quote Paul or Romans and say "be at peace with your government" "God appointed them over you" they are the most compliant and willing of all because they believe God will deliver them to victory but it is God whose end is most near

Why do I have to be apart of some religion to believe in GOD. Thats what all you atheists think is that someone has to be catholic, jew, etc, etc. So very wrong on your kinds part.

Let's use facts about our world. Look at the way your body works. It is a perfect machine with every single cell having to work together flawlessly just to inhale and then again exhale.

Look at how the world itself works. it is truly perfect. Everything in nature has a role. Every single thing in this planet all has to work together in some way or another for every single thing to live.

You think that is from evolution or by mistake. Its by design.I been down your road before and I have arrived back where my heart told me was right. I am not part of any religious movement but I do believe in the Most High. I attend church with myself.I do not need a following or to follow someone to believe in God. Bash away but I truly hope you find your way.

Great comment, saints51.

Many disbelievers get caught up in rhetoric:

"Religion" vs "Spirituallity"

In reality, either can mean many things.

Some are caught up with "vengeance" and eschew "forgiveness"

Neither are positive ways to live life.

"Science" is the secular being's "god"

Yet politics and money have completely corrupted science.

100% of their understanding is based on the physical world

Yet the observable world teaches numerous lessons about the metaphysical plane that they never note.

And how could I not mention all those that say things like: "Mother Nature will fix this"

Never realizing they just chose their "god" (as if a mindless rock has feelings such as vengeance, justice, etc)

They confuse interpretations with God's word, conflating the two

Yet if they were truly open minded and intelligent they would actually read, study, and interpret God's word.

Lots of examples of the above on ZH and everywhere else.

Surely the cultural and moral breakdown in America would convince intelligent observers that the religion of man, called atheism or secular Judaism, is a pathway that can be controlled by tyrants.

The importance of marriage, the significance of innocence among children, the understood responsibility of a father to protect his children, of a mother to keep the home together for the health and happiness of her family…these things can be pushed away by the likes of a Joseph Biden who has pointed out that the Jews are behind gay marriage (the current revolutionary movement in the U.S.), the pornographers, the pediophiles, the political parties, the atheists and lesbians and political activists on the US Supreme Court, the corporations who make their money on the instant gratification and perversions that the declining standards of a banker-bought Congress and welfare state permit.

It was innate conscience and the love of God and belief in something greater than lowly man that created the permanent things in this world: liberty, respect, property rights, justice, honesty, innocence, honor, security, courage and selflessness. In short, the right to life. The prime example is Christian America.

It was the rules of man – atheism – that provided absolutely no limits, no standards, that ushered in totalitarianism – a boot stamping on a human face  forever. The prime example is Bolshevik Russia.

It was Soviet Communism that turned a society into a gulag, to death, to the evil dictates of atheist man – a Stalin, a Lenin, a Trotsky…

The Bible is God’s guide for man’s walk on his Creation, and unlike the laws of man it is not compromised, it doesn’t change. Discard it and society reaps the atheist whirlwind – the silent scream.

It’s a free-will, clear choice: Lenin’s atheist Russia or the Founders’ Christian America.  Sadly, the intolerance of atheism already is sweeping the United States in a million intricate ways. For Instance, as James G. Bruen, Jr., reports:

“When the St. Louis Rams selected Michael Sam in the last round of the NFL draft, he kissed his boyfriend on live TV…

“The Miami Dolphins fined safety Don Jones for tweeting ‘OMG’ and ‘Horrible’ after Michael Sam’s draft day queer kiss. The Dolphins excused Jones from team functions, requiring him to undergo education training before returning to the team.”
