SodaCreamed: SODA Bubble Fizzles After Abysmal Guidance; Stock Halted

Tyler Durden's picture

In the new normal, companies can one second trade with a market cap of hundreds of millions (or over a billion in the case of negative cash flow GTAT) and the next unexpectedly report they are bankrupt, or, as SODA just did, give guidance that is just about as bad. From the just release press release which explains why the news was so bad, SODA stock actually had to be halted:

  • Revenue to be approximately $125.0 million; expected: $154.4 million
  • Operating income to be approximately $8.5 million; expected: $17.6 million

Translated: the SodaStream fad is officially over. From the release:

"We are very disappointed in our recent performance," said Daniel Birnbaum, Chief Executive Officer of SodaStream. "Our U.S. business underperformed due to lower than expected demand for our soda makers and flavors which was the primary driver of the overall shortfall in the third quarter. While we were successful over the last few years in establishing a solid base of repeat users in the U.S., we have not succeeded in attracting new consumers to our home carbonation system at the rate we believe should be achieved.  The third quarter results are a clear indication that we must alter our course and improve our execution across the board. We have already begun a strategic shift of the SodaStream brand towards health & wellness, primarily in the U.S., where we believe this message will resonate more strongly with consumers. In addition, we are developing a comprehensive growth plan for the Company that will encompass Marketing, Product and Innovation, Distribution, Operations and Organization. We intend to share more specifics around our growth plan when we report third quarter results later this month."

Because, frankly, right now we have no idea how to turn around the Titanic after it has hit the Iceberg.

What the sellside "analysts" were saying until yesterday:

And the punchline:

Mr. Birnbaum concluded, "We have a strong balance sheet and are well positioned with ample liquidity to invest in the areas of our business that we believe will fuel profitable growth in the years ahead. Despite our current challenges, we continue to be very confident in our business model and the global prospects for SodaStream. We firmly believe that our actions to shift the brand and improve execution will strengthen our leadership position in the home carbonation category and deliver enhanced shareholder value."

A soda company having "ample liquidity"? Literally, yes. Otherwise, see GTAT about the whole "strong balance sheet" thing. Also: why not blame the weather, snow, Easter, school holidays, seasonal or Bush. Everyone else is doing it.

At this point all we can advise SODA is to do more Scarlett ads as nothing else is working. May as well go out with a, er, fizz.

It does have a niche.  Apparently, it's used regularly by radio personalities and voiceover artists who work from home.

The reasons: QoS and a wide audible range.  It's HD telephone.

Also, ISDN Data over Voice was a way of getting a double-speed dialup connection that was all digital, but one paid only for the cost of setting up two calls.  It required compatible equipment on both ends and the ILEC had to have the voice tariff on voice connections to not be per-minute.

Aren't they in the whippet business? I'm surprised people aren't interested in nitrous oxide. What have they moved onto? Did the legalization of pot have anything to do with SODAs demise? Have they failed to use the whippet angle in their marketing strategy? This one looked like an easy win but they blew it.

actually have one of these contraptions. got a deal on it 'used'....did the math, costs about 1/2 of regular 2L soda. plus, I can add all of the fizzy I want to it. there is also a fairly large variety of flavors. the major hangup I see with it is the price of entry. if they could get their machine down to $20 bucks, this baby would probably do well....and from what i see of the quality, its not worth $20 bucks. they need to sacrifice some machine margins to get the volumes up...

just saying.

Of course, given the new normal on Wall Street, having a shitty product that nobody wants is no reason for a company not to perform well.

It is killing McDonalds. Are people getting smarter about basic health or is it just the price point of their products?

I can buy store brand seltzer water (no sugar or salt added) at 80 cents per 2 liter bottles, or a name brand like Poland Spring for slightly more, on sale. Smaller sizes cost more, so probably the major cost is in the packaging and handling, not the ingredients.

At that price buying a machine to make my own is senseless. Plus I would have to learn how to use it, find a place to store it, and fix it when it breaks, which will happen sooner rather than later.

Same reason why I don't use a home computer printer. Endless trouble for something I really don't need, and I can print computer files at the library for 10 cents a page on the very few occasions I need to print an official letter etc. Why does anyone buy computer printers anyway?

Didn't they do a basic marketing survey before creating the product?

I used to think the same thing.  We bought Kroger brand seltzer water, but after consuming 5-6 cans per day, it was a pain in the ass to return all those cans (.10 bottle return) and it was more expensive.  I bought the soda stream machine for $60 and they had a $15 rebate.  So, for $45, I use tap water and haven't had to replace the cartridge yet (2 months and counting).  It really is a better deal, as long as you are just using it for carbonated water and not flavored beverages.

"Why does anyone buy computer printers anyway?"

What a rediculous question. They really get their panties in a bunch at the local library when you start printing out porn.

Actually in all seriousness, I can't imagine not having a printer. A monochrome laser printer costs about $100 and the toner is much cheper than inkjet cartridges. I'll be damned if I will leave the house every time I need to print out a form or some document. I guess my laziness trumps my cheapness.

But it wasn't a viable product from a marketing perspective. It was an upscale toy. There are probably a few hundred hipsters in NYC and LA who own one now, and that is their only market.

A competent and honest marketing study would have killed the idea long before it got into production, and saved everyone a lot of money.

It's not a new idea to build a machine that makes sodas. Bars and restaurants have had soda fountains for many many years, and homes do not, for good reasons.

Cannot the same be said of Tesla? Or Solyndra? Ethanol anyone? Oh, that's right, those were government-subsidized business-models.

The Soda Jerks (and their investors) bet on a product and lost. I've got no problem with that. Sometimes, you get lucky--most of the time, you don't. They at least made a go of it.

The carbonation didn't seem to be as good as what you purchased in the stores.

Also for health as well expenditures. People are more aware that good water is much better than cancer causing caramel colored polluted water.

Plus municipalities are starting to tax soft drinks.

Same reason not to drink Coke, Pepsi or any other soft drink out there. Your body will thank you for it.

you got it.

I stopped buying at the coffe shops some years ago.

I did some quick  analysis on it. I was working at 101 California st in San Fran at the time.

there was Peets around the corner. love the coffe.

anyway, I would buy a coffe and pastry in the AM and a coffe and pastry( they had these great little almond cakes) in the PM.  (yeah, I know....)

this added up to about  $10 per day or 50 per week or 2500 per year, after tax.  add Ca state and fed tax and social security and medicare and say at the margin, its about 40%+.  (CA 10%, Fed 27%+, fica/medicare  7%)

that 2500 cost you   $4100 before tax.  you have to earn $4100 before tax to buy  2 cups of coffee and 2 pastries  each day.  thats just effing insane.

of coure, you math may vary.

and that is why there is a starbucks on every corner.

I looked at it. I like carbonated water with a twist of lemon. No sugar, no shit. At the time I looked, flavors without shit weren't available. But the real deal breaker was the CO2 consumables - think inkjet refills. Further research revealed the availability of southern engineered adapters for non-proprietary CO2 bottles that are more readily available and far more cost effective.

I figured if I really needed/wanted something like this, there was plenty of used restaurant equipment out there that I could use instead and have fewer issues with CO2 refills or parts.

I still don't have a carbonation device. Meh.

When I discovered it was an Israeli product, well, I just smiled a bit. I have only one Israeli product that I am aware of - a rifle magazine reloader. It too is an overpriced piece of plastic that provides convenience to a means of killing, but far far more useful.

This is the only call I ever took that had a protester break in in the middle of it....something about how God will smite those with blood on them...very memorable call. SodaStream has a big competition problem...the US folks who will buy something like this are price sensitive and will buy it from Coke for less. Sodastream suck ass, They overcharge on thier very small (14oz) CO2 canisters (~$30). You can get an initial cost for a 5lb canisiter with gauge ~$60 and a 2L soda pop adapater for about ~$6. Each refill for my 5lb canister is $8....

I have had my canister for over 1yr and a couple of months and still have pressure to do more 2L sodas. I'll I do is buy the sode I want at a local SAMs and that shit will last forever if you dont drink much soda.

Pennies on the dollar.... but the dollar isnt worth much anyway.

I bought the sodastream some time back.  a few reasons.

1. most american sodas are made with corn syrup.  you can look up and see how bad it is for you. or look around you and see the land whales guzzling their 64 ounce slyrpiees.

2.  I used to buy a couple cases of san pelligrino per month at costco. at a decent price.  I like the carbonated water.

drink it plain or add fruit juice, lemon or lime juice. I dont drink the fruit of the vine much anymore and this fills the need, whatever that might be, to have a drink other than plain ole tap water or dysani with benzene in it.

3. using it daily, a bottle of co2  costs about $30 bucks at bed bath and beyond. lasts a couple of months.

4. way easier than lugging around cases of water, and probably (god, I hate to say this) enviromentally  better with less trash.

5. you can also buy, on amazon, a book for making your own syrups. for about  14.00.  http://www.amazon.com/Homemade-Soda-Sparkling-Carbonated-Concoctions/dp/...

I made a few of the syrups and they are easy and you have the satisfaction of making it as organic as you like and can afford.  organic vanilla beans are pricey.

6. or go to world market and buy torani syrups for about 7.00. made with sugar, not corn syrup.

7. you can, with care, refill the cannisters with dry ice and that works as well.

8. as in all things, its neither heaven nor hell, but thinking that makes it so.

9.  Scarlett J is just plain hot.
