Sorry William  ,just seem to have been blocked out of many websites recently.

I wonder is it because I am naturally a asehole or because of having become a proper distributionist recently (having dumped most of my Golleum like capitalist programming)

janus's picture

janus has a treat for y'all this morning...instead of story-telling, fable-weaving, polemical preachin or other sundry diatribing, this morning i'm going to engage in a stylized form of journalism.  dat's right, janus is gonna don is super-slueth reporter's cap and give you bitchez the scoop!

so i was up to my usual tonight in the cab -- seditious and heretical blaspheming against the gods of our age and advocating apostasy to their orthodoxy. at one point i picked up the former editor of the boston globe's arts section and gave her a little speech on the current state of literature that she won't soon forget...no, seriously, gentlemen...this is true, and i said some things and in very certain ways to alert her to the fact that, 'yes-indeedy, the new age is upon us, and it may not in every way meet with your generation's expectations...but, relax, we've got this.  these are our visions to actualize, because, obviously, time/circumstance and the turning of Fortuna's wheel have laid the reins in our hands.  the decisions are ours to make, and at such critical times as these (yes we are blessed, if not down-right lucky); we respect you all the same, but it's time you yield to the inevitabilities of the age -- and it falls to us'.

and i tried to say it in a way that would best convey my convictions concerning such and to also in some way demonstrate that the generation preceding her own felt just as vehemently that they'd adequately resolved all the world's ills, or were so close that if you baby-boomers just stuck with the plan, the world would be at peace and everyone would be happy.  so, like i say, that august lady of dignity and standing (and i don't say this condescendingly, she was a lady and was in every way gracious and open-minded), the three-plus decade editor of the globe's arts section, got a full dose of janus on her way to logan airport.  i failed to tell her the name of my book, but something tells me it'll somehow find its way to her.

that's just a primer for 'the scoop' i have prepared for you ZHealots, but it happens to be germane to the main event, which has more to do with the general interests here at the Hedge (you see, i'd prefer to speak more expansively on Art, but i do this for you guys) so finance it is, it being your scoop.

not long after dropping the art critic and her civil-liberties-lawyer-crusading husband off at logan, and then returning with this awesome swiss-dude who loved america, i picked up yet another interesting fare.

i knew instantly by the look in his eye, the type of suit, his bearing and manner, and a few other intangibles that he was a money manager, and a rather successful one.  i've become something of an adept at discerning a man's occupation; not to flatter myself, but i was correct on nearly every score.  i suspected he was a hedge-funder, and had worked his way from client relations to more of a portfolio manager...or some sort of decision maker.  nope, he was a trader...the kind of man with a natural passion for the desk.  i know we're all supposed to hate these guys; but i don't.  many of them are impressive human specimens; this cat was one of them.  money (and especially when there's a lot of it, and at a time when all our nation's noble institutions are fermenting into rot, all that compounded by the fact there are still some arenas in the world of finance where competitive drive and competence still matters (and they do for me)) anyway, the world of money, curious though the phenomena may be, attracts some of the best.

turns out, he was a bond guy; so we 'bonded' (sorry, couldn't help it, cheesy as it admittedly is).  i wanted to cut right to the chase and get his opinion on the matter with Bill Gross (not that the 30-year back near 2.5 is worth discussing)...gossip sometimes trumps charts for those who like the bond world.  turns out, he works at pimco.  after a few succinctly probing questions i verified my suspicions.  turns out, he was definitely plugged into the nerve and nexus of pimco's C-suite (if not part of it...i didn't ask specifically).  i won't describe him further, as he wanted to retain his anonymity.  and if anyone respects anonymity, it's a Hedger (and all gentlemen everywhere).

after i established that he was intimately familiar with the decision-making mechanisms at play viz. Bill Gross,  i sought to make it clear that i remain a fan of Mr. Gross and to in some way tacitly say that if he's gonna dis Bill, janus is going to back him up.  but there was no need for this, my fare retained a sincere respect and affection for the legendary Bill Gross.  say what you will, but Bill almost single-handidly sculpted the landscape of modern/classic bond trading...and he's a a genius.  the systems for which he's credited will form the basis of bond trading as long as the current paradigm exists.  in a way, he's like the bill gates of code...only, not malevolent and hell-bent on fuedelizing 'folks' like janus.

and on all these points my fare and i agreed.  but why?  why is mr. pimco leaving pimco?  obviously, the battle with mohammed had been won...and there (i don't think) aren't as hard a' feelings remaining afterward as many (like me) suspected with the whole economist/trader philosophical battle having been settled internally.  so the traders had won, and Bill was still their king...at least for the time being...at least until now.  and to maybe distill the rest of what i have to say in a metaphor: sometimes, when a king builds a kingdom so vast and sucessful, it naturally evolves into a noble republic (before it slides into its next phase).  that is to say, Bill built an empire so large it became impossible for one man to run it, and if if it couldn't be run by one man, King Bill wasn't going to have any part of it.

from what i understand, this seemed to be mutually understood by all parties involved.  and my fare, by all indications, appeared to be telling the truth...and i scrutinized him according to the assumption that he was going to be pro-pimco/pro-forma.  i likewise feel confident that this gentleman was telling the truth because he is a terrible liar...i will explain how i know this in just one moment -- as it's the mot juste..as-in the cherry atop this janus scoop.

and so, his principal argument was that there is now at pimco a brain-trust, the core of which formed under Bill's tutelage, many of which being on the seasoned end of gen X (and still a healthy admixture of ripened wisdom), all of whom similarly minded and incredibly talented.  i found myself understanding and agreeing with most all of what he said.   and it wasn't only because his argument was solid-state and reflected a holistic understanding of the challenges faced by an institution as unique as pimco in an environment equally novel, it was also because there was an authentic confidence in his voice that can't be counterfeited by even the best of salesmen, much less the worst of liars.

i suppose i can sum up my investigation and impressions by saying that it seems that the best solution has been resolved in the best interest of all parties.  all things considered, and on a proportional basis, i think janus capital got the better end of the deal; even so, i can't on the other hand deny that i would have a high level of confidence with my money at pimco.  in other words, i not only don't think there's much reason for catastrophic concern at the world's largest bond fund...on the contrary, i was genuinely impressed.

as an aside, and please understand, i say this within the context of the current financial paradigm, as long as it lasts.  but we can't ignore current reality, gentlemen...no matter what the future may hold.

the only thing that leaves any sort of bitter after-taste is that the arena of finance continues to attract so much of the world's top-tier talent.  certainly, money-management has its place...but, again, who can blame them.  our nation's 'noble' institutions being what they are.  and, well, we can't all be writers.

finally, and just before he exits the cab and janus drives off into the night, i turn around to deliberately make eye contact and ask, "so...uh, you guys ever read ZeroHedge over there in Newport Beach?"

his answer: "no?...never heard of it."

this answer didn't really have the now familiar ring of truth to it, so i asked again.  this time, and while maintaining eye-contact, i positively detected duplicity.  so, janus being who he is, i asked a final time, "are you 'sure' you guys aren't reading 'The Hedge'?"

he broke down and confessed.  it was pointless to carry on the charade any longer, and i wanted to make the revelation as relatively painless as possible; but, all the same, at our parting i wanted to dispense with all pretense.

after we shook hands and he exited the cab, i winked at him and asked that if he sees Bill around any time in the near, tell him janus sez hello.  he winked back and assured me that he would.

later in the night/morning i drove a few of my cab-driving colleagues home...on the way to waltham, one of whom revealed that some newscast was broadcasting an estimate that some 32 billion would die from ebola...i tried to convince my colleage that nothing of the sort could possibly happen, as that number is several multiples more than earth's current population.  try though i might, it was impossible for him to integrate the math to his certainty of the news cast's projection.

so that's all the news that's fit to print...take that, nytimes!

janus

at the onset of the Iraq war the Ayn Rand Foundation was denigrating the Bush premise for that war, saying the REAL problem was IRAN, and we should attack them first. (just to denigrate everyone involved) i think america wants what george bush 2 promised in 2000 (and what rand paul promises now, but he cant deliver it either) fewer foreign entanglements. panetta says ISIS is al qaeda on steroids, good for thirty years of deficit spending, and military misappropriations. what would the fed do with only tangilble economic growth? a lot of muslims are going to their heaven to keep our economic system afloat. and political solutions to their problems are ruined before they can form. political solutions to our problems require even more violence. the wrong people are on the wrong end of a gun, is history ever more exact?

'Bastard' is a funny word!  It just has that flow and enunciation in nearly all languages where a guy cant help but giggle!...clearly, any true 'bastard' had no choice regarding their own conception or parental input...I suppose in this sense, Slim Shady is a bastard regarding his lack of identifying with a base moral compass, country, or race to call home...thats something he has to figure out on his own and decide for himself...too bad he took us along for his vision quest is all I meant...no disrespect intended for all the honorable bastards out there..

Old 'Slim Shady' would strike out in a Tee ball game...poor bastard, and I use that term in a literal sense...for he does indeed qualify as a bastard, both in lineage and practice.

Bastard, that's a funny word, ain't it?  There are no bastards in real life.  Clearly, both father and mother participated in conception, and even if the father bailed out of the relationship, the bastard still has a father.  What if the bastard is female?  That would mean there's lots of female bastards on this globe, as well.

If we accept the current definition of bastard as a male child who has no physical father figure in his life, it means that Jesus Christ himself was a bastard.

As a side note, I really and truly admire the 'Jesus' character but I'm much less enthralled by the fantastic tales told by those who claimed to know him 40 years after his death.

Are John the Baptist, and John the Prophet, and John the Revelator the same person?

I doubt it.

I don't wanna piss on your parade though.  In case you haven't noticed, your town is on fire.

I'm not gonna put it out this time.

Sincerely,

Gulliver

Particularly funny since I saw the clandestine video of him lifting weights.

Those ten-pounders looked like they were going to give him a hernia.

Though, he does seem to do OK with golf balls, and other balls of similar size.

I would like to see a rough estimate of the incoming passenger traffic from the Ebola stricken countries.

I am certain it would be most alarming.

I would be more interested in seeing the incoming traffic TO the Ebola countries.

Are we talking 10 per day?

If that were the case, then we should be able to ban traffic from the Ebola countries on the grounds tnat the planes can't make any money w/o both legs being full.  If there is any racism involved it has been done by the people voting with their feet, not the governments acting from less than PC motivations.

Speaking of racists, the Rev Jackson has flown to Dallas to look into the medical treatment of the late Ebola patient.  Does the fact that he arrived in Dallas before Eric Holder mean that Jesse is at the top of the short list for AG?  That would be so cool.  We could have the first man-of-the-cloth AG.

I am looking for Howard Stern to soon go out to UC Berkeley to randomly ask the students if the AG is a lawyer who never specialized, or one who works for the military in Iraq.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xI2h5FMr5Oc

my brother, as trivial and 'bread&circusy as our beloved college football may to other Hedgers seem, i know you 'get it'.  i similarly suspect that you've, at one time or another, consciously scrutinized your outsized passion for something admittedly 'meaningless'; and obviously came away accepting the fact that you care, you care a lot and you'll go on caring as long as they're kicking off in tallahassee..  but, man, 'outsiders'... they'll never understand.  i'm fourth generation MSU BullDawg (even though my grandfather briefly played full back at ole miss (a dark family secret we rarely share with outsiders)), we're maroon&white through&through.  second to blood and the obligations of those relations, it is our strongest bond as a family.  almost all of us are alumni.  some of my earliest and fondest memories are tethered to our undying passion for State.  my younger brother, to this day, carries a scar on his eyebrow as a souvenir from one of State's finest hours: i can remember it like it twas yesterday...the year was 1981, reagan freshly sworn in for his first term, america-the-beautiful feeling the first blush of a renewed vitality that many were sure was gone for good, the south is transforming from yellow-dog dixie-crats to 'value-voting' republicans, Mississippi State lines up against the mighty university of alabama, under the direction of the iconoclastic Bear Bryant (gotta give caps to the Bear), the odds were bleak, if not insurmountable.  long story short, State wins 6-3, we go on to achieve our highest AP ranking to date (except only for the present day), but fail to win the SEC and the rest is a long and maudlin saga of dreary mediocrity...until now.  as for my brother and the scar dividing his eyebrow, well, we were fighting, i pushed him into a door-frame, he's gushing blood from his eye, i'm terrified that i've permanently maimed my little brother and even more panic-stricken over the prospect of an undoubtedly severe whippin coming my way.  but, as Fate would have it, twas merely a flesh wound and State had, at that precise moment, sealed the victory...and there was no way in hell my father was going to let his duty to discipline dilute his exhilaration over having defeated the great and legendary crimson tide.

i bring all this up because i want you to know, as much as i respect you, i will not let that stand in the way of our traditions.  there is every reason to expect that i'll be talking plenty of shit about FSU if we happen to meet in the championship.  MSU's in new territory; and i must say they're looking very confident in our new enviorins.  remember, FSU was a laughing stock in gainsville till Bobby Bowden came along and dad-gummed his way to a few national championships and built, from scratch, one of the nation's premiere programs.  much respect for FSU and all, but, if it comes down to it, my brother...it's fuckin on!  i was textin some shit-talking with one of my bros from auburn.  he's a great guy; just happened to attend the vilest cesspool of fetid academia there is -- all-barn university.  no shit, i really do hate auburn...and i let him know about it as often as opportunity affords.  dude, i expected to beat A&M...but now it's serious.  auburn is for real.  they're deep, fast, hit hard and are very talented.  we're all those things, too.  and we're playing in starkvegas...and we hit harder...and we hit harder and harder as the game goes on.  our defense calls itself the 'psycho' D...and i agree -- they like to lay they hurt.  lots of scores to settle in the SEC.  i am going to be one exhilarated Dawg come saturday evening.  i'll be ringing my cowbell so loud they'll hear it in hyannis.  and, if one of my sons maims his brother in the melee, i'll probably look the other way.

go State (and FSU, too...at least for now),

I hear ya...lol.

And I share your disdain for Auburn. Many don't remember this (especially Auburn fans & alumni oddly enough...lol) but Auburn paid FSU to get out of playing their game back in 99. They had just fired...ahem...ummm, Terry Bowden had just "resigned" and the game had of course already been scheduled years in advance leaving FSU thrashing around trying to find someone to play on that date.

It cost Auburn a million bucks (back then a considerable sum) to get out of the ass whipping Bobby was going to lay down on them for what they did to his son Terry and what does it say about the school administration and coaches who think their players are too emotionally weak to risk losing a football game? So, ever since then, I call them...War Chicken!...instead of War Eagle.

Its unimaginable to me that an "elite school" would do something like that. Just take the ass kicking you have coming and move on...but they not only ran away, they left a trail of money flying in the breeze behind them, incredible...lol.

Yeah, Bobby built that program from nothing. I remember going to games in the old stadium when you could stand at the concession stand and still watch the game through the legs of people sitting down, the old steel bleachers. He took em on the road, to Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame...wasn't afraid to play anyone, anywhere, anytime.

I think you guys have a good shot and I've rooted for you guys in the past, like when you beat Spurrier with the Gators, destestable human being that one, Spurrier. My two favorite schools are FSU and whoever is playing the Lizards that day ;-)
