The Answer On Ebola Travel Restrictions: Ban Commercial Flights, Allow Medical and Aid Flights to Continue, Quarantine Workers

George Washington's picture

NBC News reports:

A majority of Americans support banning all flights to the United States from countries experiencing an Ebola outbreak, an exclusive NBC News online survey reveals.

A Petition to the White House requests:

the FAA ban all incoming and outgoing flights to ebola-stricken countries until the ebola outbreak is contained

The Petition currently has over 18,000 signatures.

And it is obvious that screening passengers coming from Ebola hotzone countries can't work.

But the Centers for Disease Control says that – paradoxically – banning flights would increase the spread of Ebola:

A travel ban to the countries facing an Ebola outbreak could paradoxically make the problem worse, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden said during a Saturday press conference.

***

Frieden said the CDC would consider any and all precautions, but warned that a travel ban could make it harder to get medical care and aid workers to regions dealing with the outbreak.

He cited the recent delay African Union aid workers experienced trying to get to Liberia.

“Their ability to get there was delayed by about a week because their flight was canceled and they were stuck in a neighboring country,” he said.

But why can't commercial flights be stopped… while medical and humanitarian flights are allowed to continue?

After all, the Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization and other governmental agencies worldwide say they are now starting to deploy enormous resources into stopping the spread of Ebola in Africa. These agencies all have private airplanes.

Those flights could continue.  And the limited number of healthcare and aid workers flying to Africa to fight Ebola could all be quarantined and/or tested for Ebola before they return.

So that would give the best of all possible worlds: the spread of Ebola by way of commercial flights would stop, but the flow of aid and medical assistance to Africa would continue unabated.

Postscript:  I am not a healthcare expert.  If an infectious disease expert sees a flaw in the above analysis, I’m all ears.

100,000 West Africans in China. I saw an article the other day about 88 Chinese workers going home from West Africa. I'm sure nothing can go wrong...

This link shows many West Africans working in China with problems with their Visas, which of course isn't a problem in Mr. O's 'merica.

Quarantine should be enforced OUITSIDE of the US. I know Obama is stupid but this stupid ? Allowing the disease to come in and then try to contain it ?  Obama apparently has concerns other than the lives of US citizens. How many of us will get up and protest ?

Yes I was looking for Rumpole of the Bailey quotes

Here its is

http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0048578/quotes

Horace Rumpole: If it wasn't for crime, the democratic process would grind to a halt.

The BBC hack declared there was no crime.

The state through neglect of taking criminal proceedings has also declared there was no crime.

So by Rumpoles own internal logic there is no democracy.

So what exactly are we living under  - and who is calling the shots.

And what happens to the southern border freedom train when Ebolites show up?  Window dressing by a marxist gov't whose objective is only enhanced by an outbreak south of the border.  The airline restrictions are band-aides for a headache.

But why can't commercial flights be stopped… while medical and humanitarian flights are allowed to continue?

Friedan's claim to the contrary is the worst high profile false dilemma argument I've ever seen.

From Ben Franklin, our grandmothers, to the CDC and NIH we are taught that "An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure."  Except apparently in the case of a virus with 50% mortality.

I note that the agency name is "Centers for Disease Control and Prevention".

Hierarchies and titles mean a lot to the bureaucrats.  The CDC response to Ebola confirms that "control" trumps "prevention".  Makes me think giving prevention second billing in the agency name was not an accident.

Not much glory (or profit) in prevention.  Heading off a crisis is worse than letting one go to waste.

If they wanted containment they would do something like this article recommends. Thats clearly not what they want....

What if they let it spread, help it spread, until we the sheeple beg for martial law? Seems consistent with their pure evil ilk...

@George

This is a old turkey but it is so striking ...............

I am not sure you have seen this.

The BBC hack seems to not understand the scientific method.

On top of this he uses........

"I have talked to someone official ", but the official report is , emotional statements about the loss of life etc etc

You can pick any segment to show something quite spectacularly bad reporting but at 51.30 , it goes off the scale.

Scientist : "lets wait for the grand jury , lets wait for the grand jury "

Reporter : "You see the point is ,  there may not be a need for a grand jury if the evidence is already there !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Scientist : WHAT WHAT WHAT

Scientist ; if you have a crime don't you see a need for a investigation.

Reporter : WHAT CRIME.

Any rational person knows that restrictions for all entries from the infected areas is required. Obama's hack, Frieden, knows with forethought that his acts will cause the death of American citizens. This is an act defined in 18 U.S.C. § 1111 : US Code - Section 1111: Murder, which states, "a) Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought. Every murder perpetrated by ... from a premeditated design unlawfully and maliciously to effect the death of any human being other than him who is killed, is murder in the first degree. Any other murder is murder in the second degree."

I can only think of 2 reasons the .gov is reluctant to shut down flights.

1) They are so worried about the economy, GDP, and airline stock prices that they dont want to take the hit

2) This is a planned extermination to divert attention away from the economy or further an insiduous agenda.

Either one scares the shit out of me.

Good article. This exact hemorrhagic disease scenario has been debated for at least a decade if not multiple decades.  Are we supposed to believe that all of the microbiologists, virologists, epidemiologists etc that work for and do consulting for the goverment never warned them that if it was allowed to travel here by plane we would be triple screwed?  It's completely ludicris... it doesn't even pass the giggle test.  This is intentional.  Now lets hope that they plan on it burning out like with their weapons grade anthrax debockle.  None of this is incompetence although that will certainly reveal itself eventually.

Step #1 - Cancel all entry visas to USA from any non-citizen from Ebola sticken countries and 3 month moratorium on new issuance of visas.

Step #2 - Set up separate and meaningful screening facilities for incoming passengers from same countries (remember Ellis Island?).

Step #3 - Shoot the next f*cker that says we don't need to worry.......

Step #4 - Sanitize all aircraft cabins after transporting any passengers at risk of infection (good luck there).

Step #5 - Set up specialized treatment centers away from hospitals - they are nothing but a giant petri dish of infectious hazards anyhow.

Step #6 - Make your reservations to visit Nepal for the next 6 months or so...

So...how would you like to be the next passenger sitting in same pus filled seat ( #34B ?) on the flight after the Dallas victim flew in? Airlines have some shit to deal with.

As a first step, a travel restriction on arrivals from West Africa makes sense.  But.....

An infected person could initiate her flight to the U.S. from nearly any country, so simply a West Africa travel ban would only be a short-term, partial remedy.

With the likelihood that Ebola will escape Africa, a health screening process, at embarkation and arrival, need be adopted by all less-affected countries.

There is no question that Ebola is airborne - on international passenger flights.

What better way to expose yourself to EVD than by close face-to-face breathing contact with and the patting-down of exposed, potentially contagious West Africans departing and transitting daily across airports, some of them ‘ebola-flight’ escapees using the TED ploy (Thomas Eric Duncan), knowing of their symptoms or potential symptoms, having suppressed their temperature with ibuprofen and lied about not having been exposed to confirmed EVD patients, so as to obtain superior care in an American hospital: it’s only a matter of time until a symptomatic African, European or TSA security agent finds herself hauled off to lock-up in quarantine after having been thoroughly touching all of the likely source of contamination, the passengers’ blouse or shirt.

Just wondering...

There should be only three airports allowed to handle inbound (into the US) flights from anywhere else in the world. Each of those would have to be provided with facilities to quarantine all passengers for 21 days before allowing them to continue to the rest of the US.

Hawaii could handle anything coming from Asia/NZ/Australia.

Guantanamo could handle anything coming from Latin America, including Mexico.

For any planes coming from Europe, Africa or Canada, we need to build a new, special airport. I nominate Martha's Vineyard as the perfect place.

my vote is a 3 for 1.

Take known ebola victims. Put them on planes and fly them directly into Federal Reserve buildings when you know the banker is there.

Gets rid of the ebola victim

Gets rid of the ebola they carry

Gets rid of the FR banker.

Plus it provides jobs (work) for clean up) and makes a news story.
