Black Teen Shot At 17 Times, Killed By White Cop Just Miles Away From First Ferguson Shooting
Here we go again.
Exactly two months after the deadly shooting of Michael Brown by a local police officer in Ferguson, MO, it is time for the sequel. Overnight, in nearly the same spot as the Brown shooting, a white off-duty policeman shot and killed a black teenager in St Louis, officers said, triggering a night of protests just miles from the site of another police shooting of another black youth in the suburb of Ferguson.
Reuters has the details: police said the 18-year-old was armed and fired three shots while he was being chased by the officer, and they had recovered a gun at the scene. The youth was killed almost two months to the day since sometimes violent protests erupted in Ferguson after a white police officer shot dead unarmed black 18-year-old Michael Brown.
In Wednesday's shooting, the dead man was one of three people who fled after being approached by the officer, a six-year veteran of the department who was working for a private security company, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Sam Dotson said.
Now, one can debate police excess, and while a cop shooting once, twice or three times at an alleged assailant may seem somewhat reasonable, lobbing off 17 shots (which means stopping to reload) is probably a little excessive!
The officer, who was wearing his city police uniform, fired 17 shots at the teenager, police added.
To summarize: cops say Myer was armed but witnesses say he was only holding a sandwich when he was tased, fell over & then was shot at 17 times of which "only" three hit.

A crowd of around 200 gathered at the scene in the south St. Louis neighborhood of Shaw, 11 miles (18 km) south of Ferguson. Many of the protesters marched to a major thoroughfare, partially blocking traffic and chanting "Whose streets? Our streets?" as a police helicopter hovered overhead.
Teyonna Myers, 23, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch newspaper that she was the cousin of the suspect and that he was unarmed when he was killed.
"He had a sandwich in his hand, and they thought it was a gun. It's like Michael Brown all over again," she told the paper. Police have not named the teenager.
And then the riots began. "At one point, about a dozen people punched and kicked two occupied police vehicles, one that was marked and another that was unmarked. Demonstrators then broke the back window of a marked police vehicle. None of the protesters, some of whom were from Ferguson, had been arrested by the early hours of Thursday, police chief Dotson told a news conference."
"I think the department showed a tremendous amount of restraint," Dotson said.
He probably wasn't referring to the 17 shots fired earlier.
The officer, who was not hurt, has been placed on administrative leave and an investigation was under way, police said.
St Louis' historic Shaw district has a relatively low crime rate - as of September, there had been no homicides this year and just five cases of aggravated assault, according to police crime statistics.
In Ferguson, a grand jury is expected to decide next month whether to bring criminal charges against police officer Darren Wilson, who shot dead Michael Brown on Aug. 9.
Brown's death triggered weeks of sometimes violent protests, prompting the governor at one point to summon the National Guard.
And in other news, the riots which died down over the past two months, may be set for a violent comeback: "Missouri authorities are drawing up contingency plans and seeking intelligence from other police departments around the country, fearing that fresh riots could erupt if a grand jury does not indict Wilson."

See my comment above....the thing about fleeing criminals is they tend not to stand 10 yards away and directly face you while holding perfectly still, they do however occasionally shoot back at you, as appears to be the case here. I wouldn't be too quick to criticize his marksmanship.

My Glock 22 (a typical police weapon)holds 18 rounds with extended mag and a round in the chamber. Would not require a reload. 17 rounds fired during a chase does not mean 17 vital hits. Only one round may have been a terminal hit. Do your homework Tylers before sensationalizing.

I have a relative who competes at the "master" level in various handgun competitions. He says that by and large LEOs who compete are not very good.
At my range, one only sees LEOs when it is time to pass the qualifier. Otherwise, it is just hunters with rifles and shotguns and regular guys practicing with their semi autos.

My understanding is that police training usually teaches officers to unload a full magazine. The logic is that is deadly force is called for in the first place, a super-abundant response is necessary (LEOs please correct me on this.)
As others have pointed out, a magazine can hold 18 rounds.
Now, obviously there should be a review of the facts, as this is any any shooting. But to assume excessive force is, in my view, incorrect. Perhaps the 'community' should spend as much time on introspection and weighing problems from within as they do blaming whitey/police/Bush/etc.

I don't think the number of shots fired is an important factor. If the victim was carrying a gun the police officer was probably entitled to shoot him if he believed he represented a threat. Whether it was one shot or 17 is not too important.
Much more important is whether Myer carried a gun or a sandwich. That shouldn't be too difficult to determine.

The suspect was evading arrest, creating a risk threat and a tense situation in which "bad decisions" can be justified. Everyone in this situation has an incentive to lie, especially the Oprah-Omama-Gore-Clinton-Soros-Bloomberg cartel.
If the victim was carrying a gun he may have just been exercising his second amendment protected right to keep and bear arms. I may have missed it, is there an allegation that anyone was injured, assaulted, or victimized byt the dead teen?

I live near Dayton, Ohio. In the next suburb near us, in Beavercreek, right after the Ferguson shooting, local police shot dead a black gentleman inside the Wal-Mart because he was holding a air rifle that he had picked up at the store. The recently released store video tape showed the police screaming at the man repeatedly to put the gun down. He would not. When he turned with the gun still raised, the officers fired and shot him dead. Draw your own conclusions.

The police, The Greene County prosecutors office and the Ohio AG's office DID NOT release the video tape for public consumption for almost TWO. MONTHS. Why? Well my educated guess is they needed to alter the tape to justify the officers actions. Why else would they not show this to ANYONE, the family attorney's, the local media, etc. Did they have to get "everyone on the same page?"
Naturally, there were no witnesses, other than the police...are they ever going to show the whole, unedited, raw tape footage... Probally not.
All the public is is going to remember is the edited sound bite that was given to the local media.
Will this case ever make it to a Grand Jury, and if it did, would they see the whole unedited store tape...probally not.
This whole incident started with someone calling the police from their cell phone and said there was a man with a gun at the Beavercreek Wal-Mart. Instead of sealing the building and trying to diffuse the situation peacefully, the gung-ho local cowboys decided to rush in with weapons drawn.
If the man would have just listened, laid down on the ground, and shown his hands, this unfortunate incident may have been avoided...by the way, my opinion is Ronald Ritchie probally needs to be charged for calling this event in, since he can't differentiate between a cell phone, gun or rifle.

Just an added thought. If you've ever had an overrush of of adrenalin, it's hard to control minute movement ie steadying the aim of a firearm. There's a reason cops tend to be bad shots situations where they feel threatened via a weapon pointed or it being fired at them. I have a pretty good trigger finger and can do 4 rounds in .82 seconds. So if this guy does says 4 per second your talking over 4 seconds. Still goes by like a flash. Glock 17 has 17 round mags, Glock 22 has 15 round mags , that round count in the mag and then +1 in the chamber if you are carrying condition 0 as I am sure he was.

Sounds about right. My S&W MP40 hold 15 plus one in the pipe. Difference in caliber would make room for about 2 more 9 mm vs .40 cal.
