Ebola Pandemic Hits Germany, Turkey, And Australia As Infected Spanish Nurse Went Un-Quarantined For A Week

Tyler Durden's picture

Despite the still confident exclamations from officials that the Ebola pandemic is 'contained', more and more nations are admitting to Ebola-symptomatic cases or bringing infected patients back from Africa for treatment. Australia has its first potential case of the deadly disease, as Bloomberg reports a nurse who returned from volunteering in Africa has developed Ebola-like symptoms. Despite claims that Nigeria's outbreak is over, a Turkish worker there has been hospitalized in Istanbul after signs of high fever and diarrhea. Health officials from Germany confirm a 3rd Ebola patient has arrived in the country - having contracted the disease in Liberia. And finally, just as in the sad case of Thomas Duncan in Dallas, The Guardian reports the infected Spanish nurse went untreated and unquarantined for a week despite reporting symptoms at least three times to hospital officials. It seems the world is ill-prepared for this...

Bloomberg reports, a nurse who treated Ebola patients with the Red Cross in Sierra Leone was hospitalized in Australia after developing a low-grade fever, health officials said. She is being tested for the deadly virus.

The 57-year-old volunteer recently returned to Cairns, in the northeastern state of Queensland, where she has been isolating herself and checking her temperature twice daily, Jeannette Young, the state’s chief health officer, said in an e-mailed statement. Today, she reported a temperature of 37.6 degrees Celsius (99.7 degrees Fahrenheit). Results of tests for Ebola and other possible infections are expected early tomorrow.

The nurse hospitalized in Cairns was identified as Sue-Ellen Kovack by the Australian newspaper. Kovack returned home two days ago, the newspaper reported.

A Turkish worker employed in Nigeria was rushed to an Istanbul hospital Oct. 8 on suspicion of Ebola, according to Hurriyet Daily, after showing signs of a high fever and diarrhea.

The 46-year-old man, whose identity has not been disclosed, returned to Turkey 10 days ago from Africa to see his family in the western province of Sakarya during the Feast of the Sacrifice holiday.

The incident is the second case of a suspected Ebola patient in Turkey, after a Nigerian woman who transited through Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport while traveling from Lagos to Barcelona was rushed to hospital in mid-August.

Health officials from the German state of Saxony confirmed on Thursday that an Ebola patient had arrived in the country, according to DW,

The man, who originates from Sudan, contracted the virus in Liberia, they said, adding that he had been transported from the airport to the St. Georg Clinic in the city of Leipzig, which is located roughly 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Berlin.

St. Georg's Clinic is one of seven health facilities in Germany with the capability to treating highly infectious patients in isolation.

Two other Ebola patients have also been flown to the Central European country in recent weeks. A World Health Organization (WHO) employee had fallen ill with the hemorrhagic fever in Sierre Leone was brought to Hamburg, where doctors were able to stabilize him and eventually release him last week.

And finally, with regard the infected Spanish nurse in Madrid (as The Guardian explains), had told health authorities at least three times that she had a fever before she was placed in quarantine.

Her first contact with health authorities was on 30 September when she complained of a slight fever and fatigue. Romero Ramos called a specialised service dedicated to occupational risk at the Carlos III hospital where she worked and had treated an Ebola patient, said Antonio Alemany from the regional government of Madrid. But as the nurse’s fever had not reached 38.6C, she was advised to visit her local clinic where she was reportedly prescribed paracetamol.

Days later, according to El País newspaper, Romero Ramos called the hospital again to complain about her fever. No action was taken.

On Monday, she called the Carlos III hospital again, this time saying she felt terrible. Rather than transport her to the hospital that had treated the two missionaries who had been repatriated with Ebola, Romero Ramos was instructed to call emergency services and head to the hospital closest to her home. She was transported to the Alcorcón hospital by paramedics who were not wearing protective gear, El País reported.

On arrival at the hospital, Romero Ramos warned staff that she feared she had contracted Ebola. Despite the warning, she remained in a bed in the emergency room while she waited for her test results. She was separated from other patients only by curtains, hospital staff said on Tuesday.

Tyler, let's blow the lid off this thing! Please make a thread about the CDC leasing a large plot of land in Madison GA where they have stored hundreds of thousands of four- corpse coffins since 2008. Then, in 2009, they patented the ebola virus. What a coinkidink!!!!!!?!

That's silly, silly. This is actually called 6th disease, you can't name a disease until there is a cure for it. But, in the name of national security, one was created, they called it E B ready or not O city of Lost Angles. Creative name for a creative bug, to throw off the silly masses. And it worked, again, silly.

I am not on a mission and I don't know my purpose, my only instinct is to multiply and I am the same with everybody. I don't know if I was modified, created or manufactured. I do, however, know my name. Some, they call me Ebola, I prefer my title, Destroyer of Worlds.

Exactly.... I've been piddling around for far too long.... I'm buying a 15 panel set up this week with a rolls battery bank.

I've been stocking food stuffs for a while... I'm a gun bug so, I hand load and, I won't talk about what I've put up on that end of things.....  I live in the country so, I need lights at night.... so, I've got some hand tweaked led flashlights... one will light you up at over 700 yards like it's daytime.... the ANSI throw on that light is like a mile.... but, you can seriously use it out to about 700yds... and have a maxabeam that goes much further....   Now, I have to be able to run freezers with the power off, charge batteries for lights.... I have a generator but, what if you run out of fuel?   I'm pretty happy about my decision to move to the country 3yrs ago at this point.... I have gates and fences... and 7mi to the grocery store... but, that also makes you far from help...

so you arm yourself... a lot.

I'm bugging in.. not out....  For those that decide to bug out.... don't come down my street, Bro.... it's not safe for you.

Sounds great. One thing. As these things unfold most people will be doing things that they usually do not do solo.

Make sure you have a small first-aid kit. Ask yourself: "Do I really want to risk going to the hospital to get these 10 stitches"?

Start thinking this way. I want to see all the Zero's on the other side. We'll meet at the "GUIDE STONES" and roast some marsh-mellows.

Good night from Bangalore.

Have a medical kit...Even an O2 trauma kit.. plus, I've been a first responder with EMT training that volunteers for the local fire dept... so, I know where the trucks are and extra med supplies, etc... You're right about the medical stuff... without simple anti-biotics, a tooth problem could kill you.  Not sure how much I'll be responding soon... It's not working out for the Frisco police officer.

Meh, there's only so much you can do... I've done more than most have....  I have good friends and neighbors... I'll need the extra help... I'll have freezers, lights, med training, lots of bullets and electricity.... I'll be a target but, I'll have lots of help.... I'm thinking that I live at the Alamo and, once that's lost, all is lost.

I know some folks that want this kind of crap to happen... I'm the opposite... I'm terrified of it.... I don't see a harem of women that want stuff from me....  I see desperation and people that you'd have to turn away... starvation... sickness.... and death...  Wheeeee.....   Let's roast marshmellows....  No, no... we throw the bodies on that fire... not this one.

I'd never say these things to people I know... you guys don't know my real name but, the threats to our lives are real... It's hard to imagine for us but, WWI and WWII happened... starvation, millions murdered.... lined up in ditches and shot, or gassed... or just killed by carpet bombing.... Can people here imagine a war where 40yr old men were drafted?  That was WWII......  give up 20,000 men for an island that is just volcanic ash....   what would it look like if 20,000 dead were on your street?  My uncle and my father fought in WWII... my grandfather fought in WWI.... Dad would never talk about it but, before my uncle died... he did....  He said ( and he was 87 when he died )... that he can still not get the stench of dead bodies out of his nose....  as he started tearing up.... You didn't do a, "tour" back then.... they used you until you were used up or the war was over.... My mom told me about how they were drafting 40yr old men...  and worried about fighting in our own land...  for our country and for ourselves.

My uncle wanted me to have his.... "coin collection".... he owned  a white's auto store in rural texas for 30yrs....  being a man as he was... he said... they're not going to make siver money anymore... I'll just take it from the register and roll it up....  I didn't think anything when he told me that but, It turned out to be over a hundred pounds of 90% coins...    He saw that money was changing and that was in the 60s.... Hell, he never had any credit score... he never borrowed from anyone... He even asked a neighbor when he got older to set his satellite up for him and he'd pay for it because they wouldn't turn it on without a credit score...  He was an amazing man... I miss him.

We've been spoiled children... living in a wonderland.... things are changing.... and what I hope for more than anything else is that I'm just crazy and OCD and worried too much and mis-handling my money.

Guys like my uncle don't exist anymore.... He never borrowed... He set up his own business and, everyone knew him and loved him... He fought in a just war...  He had scars but wouldn't talk about them... When he got sick and I came to be with him at the end... he opend his door and, he had a bible and a colt sitting on top of it... sitting next to his chair.....  He hunted, fished and spent most of his life outdoors and left this place in a graceful way... he didn't complain and wouldn't even admit that it hurt....

Now, if you guys think I'm nuts... I'm ok with that... It may be reassuring.

Yeah, breakdown in society due to disease is scary stuff. Reminds me of the end of Titanic when all those people are swimming in the freezing water. Societal breakdown would be like that only on a massive scale. Not pretty. If you can make it through the first 6 months, things will calm down after that.

I'm more concerned about the panic than the Ebola.

The vast majority of Western countries have both the facilities as well as the personnel to prevent any serious outbreak, so this persistent fear-mongering is becoming a bit distasteful. It are the countries in West Africa that I am very concerned about instead. Decades of civil war and poverty have left many of them with weakened central governments and healthcare systems, and they are wholly unprepared to deal with a crisis like this.

I agree wholeheartedly that Africa in general has horrible infrastructure.  However, the only thing exceptional about the US medical system is it's cost.  We may be able to treat the first 1000 people if we spread them out nationally, but thats about it.  Beyond that you are talking tent clinics and home isolation - just like Africa.  If this ever blows up you can bet your ass that a good chunk of medical staff (who have more wealth then their counterparts on the dark continent) will be flying themselves and families as far away as possible.

Treating is not containment.  Just look at the recent respiratory infection spreading like wildfire amongst children.

I don't think most ZH'ers want that.  I think that many motivated responders to these ebola threads posting these comments laced with fear do not represent this blog (silent majority argument).

Your comment itself is a trade of liberty for security.  Take a deep breath and count to ten.  This is another swine flu, avian flu, disease pandemic flavor of the year.  It too will be forgotten about in a year when the next one comes along and people (or anonymous blog posters to be specific) clamor for help from the government.

Erik i am sorry but with all due respect you grossly overr-estimate the "civility" of western countries. Once nurses and doctors start getting sick, like the nurse in Madrid, our hospitals will fare no better than the ones in West Africa. Hospital staff will not report to work especially when they observe that some of them are getting sick nothwitstanding the hazmat suits.

I saw it reported several months ago on the BBC TV News that ISIS had stated that Isreal was their "end goal."  That's a no-brainer.  It certainly looks as thought ISIS will take all of the ME and Africa as well since no one will fight/boots on the ground there and ISIS knows that.  Whom they are most of all terrorizing are their own people in this process.  For centuries the Arab fighter has had a history of surrendering to and subsequently joining the strongest leader/winning side.  Unfortunately ISIS will continue to move forward and win unopposed in this scenerio.

TPTB very frequently use the excuse of incompetence to cover their own maliciousness. We are bombarded by this by the media. 9/11 was an excellent example of this.

TPTB and their minions aren't as stupid as they want us to believe. If they were, they wouldn't be TPTB (and have all the wealth and power). This is not to suggest that they don't have some pretty stupid people on the payroll, especially in the lower livestock-herder echelons.

If one does some research you will discover that the 4 person coffins originated from dealing with over crowding of our national cemeteries for service men.  Many plots designated for military personel are at, or over, capacity and/or there no longer is deep enough soil available for traditional internment.  The origial intent of these coffins was to bury deceased servicemen above ground (with soil and grass surrounding), four to a box to save space.  If you poke around you will find many military cemeteries that have begun this practice since the first Gulf War.  If the gov or cdc over bought for some spill over civilian use so be it but these coffins were NOT purchased for the sole intent of the future interning of civilian dead.

Additionally, I contracted West Nile in 2004 and survived.  In 2007 I went through Swine Flu and survived.  Yes the death rate for ebola is much higher but the point is contracting ebola is not a death sentence if one's own immune systems is healthy.
