German Journalist Blows Whistle On How The CIA Controls The Media

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

“I was bribed by billionaires, I was bribed by the Americans to report…not exactly the truth.”

- Udo Ulfkotte, a former editor of one of Germany’s main daily publications, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Some readers will see this and immediately dismiss it as Russian propaganda since the interview appeared on RT. This would be a serious mistake.

Whether you want to admit it or not, CIA control of the media in the U.S. and abroad is not conspiracy theory, it is conspiracy fact.

Carl Bernstein, who is best known for his reporting on Watergate, penned a 25,000 word article in Rolling Stone after spending six months looking at the relationship of the CIA and the press during the Cold War years. Below is an excerpt, but you can read the entire thing here.

In 1953, Joseph Alsop, then one of America’s leading syndicated columnists, went to the Philippines to cover an election. He did not go because he was asked to do so by his syndicate. He did not go because he was asked to do so by the newspapers that printed his column. He went at the request of the CIA.

Alsop is one of more than 400 American journalists who in the past twenty?five years have secretly carried out assignments for the Central Intelligence Agency, according to documents on file at CIA headquarters. Some of these journalists’ relationships with the Agency were tacit; some were explicit. There was cooperation, accommodation and overlap. Journalists provided a full range of clandestine services—from simple intelligence gathering to serving as go?betweens with spies in Communist countries.

Reporters shared their notebooks with the CIA. Editors shared their staffs. Some of the journalists were Pulitzer Prize winners, distinguished reporters who considered themselves ambassadors without?portfolio for their country. Most were less exalted: foreign correspondents who found that their association with the Agency helped their work; stringers and freelancers who were as interested in the derring?do of the spy business as in filing articles; and, the smallest category, full?time CIA employees masquerading as journalists abroad.

In many instances, CIA documents show, journalists were engaged to perform tasks for the CIA with the consent of the managements of America’s leading news organizations.

Like any good intelligence agency, the CIA learned from its mistakes upon being exposed, and has since adjusted tactics. This is where the concept of “non-official cover” comes into play. The term was recently described by German journalist Udo Ulfkotte, in a blistering RT interview. Mr. Ulfkotte was previously a respected journalist for one of Germany’s main dailies, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ), so he is no small fry.

“Non-official cover” occurs when a journalist is essentially working for the CIA, but it’s not in an official capacity. This allows both parties to reap the rewards of the partnership, while at the same time giving both sides plausible deniability. The CIA will find young journalists and mentor them. Suddenly doors will open up, rewards will be given, and before you know it, you owe your entire career to them. That’s essentially how it works. But don’t take it from me…

So Fonz has been kicked? Does anyone know why?

JustObserving's picture

I read his post this morning which was very critical of the Tylers for carrying the news that a black teenager had been shot by a white policeman who fired seventeen shots after tasering him.  But how can Zero Hedge not carry a news story that was leading Twitter for so many hours?

In any case, hope Fonz's ban is lifted soon and everything is back to normal. A bit of criticism now and then, justified or not,  is to be expected

Manipuflation's picture

The Fonz never bothered me at all.

Skateboarder's picture

NO WAY! I hope you're kidding.

BigJim's picture

I'm not.

Apparently, he made some kind of comments(s) in the article about the latest black-teenager-gets-shot-by-a-cop. The comments(s) got scrubbed, and the Fonz ain't been heard from since.

Perhaps he'll get a new alias and log on to tell what happened... though I seem to recall him saying he'd been keeping his ZH time down... so maybe he won't bother.

Or maybe 'Tyler' can come clean.

Either way, I liked Fonz (and though I didn't always agree with him, Francis Sawyer) and every time one of these guys gets kicked, I find ZH becomes less appealing. I doubt I'm the only one.

Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!

I was pleasantly surprised when zh ran the brandon smith piece the other day about how truthers would be painted as rt sympathizers.

Have been unpleasantly surprised by the number of rootin for putin types here on zh and the ads for russian brides...hmmm.

All that said, one of best sites on the web. Comments as valuable as the articles often

Peek, Peak or Pique ?

The correct phrase I believe is "piqued your curiousity".

However 'Peak' seems to be a common misuse.

But he's only a financial writer.

I took bribes, sold out, did bad stuff but you can trust me now.

disgruntled housewife's picture

If the CIA offered me a bribe I would probably take it because the alternative might be suicide or a car accident- RIP Gary Web and Michael Hastings. Perhaps he is coming out now because the climate seems right. There are enough people who would believe him today-even in the comment section of NY Times articles you see people trashing this group of thugs. This agency serves some group but it isn't the American people. I wish I could choose where my tax dollars were spent- they and the other 15 intelligence agencies would get zero. I would be safer without all of them.

Never take a bribe.

The rest of your life will be obidience to extortion.

Either take cyanide or fight.

No middle ground.

*sigh*  Have never been offered a bribe, ever.

Not sure how I'd react to it either.

you're a kid or some wanker. any job with serious responsibility carries secrets that can compromise your ability to pay your mortgage if the secrets are divulged. it is amazing how much motivation food, clothing and shelter provide for a middle aged man to do what he needs to do to provide them.

OldPhart's picture

I'm the Corporate Controller for fifty entities employing about 250 people with locations in So. California, Arizona and Nevada.

I presume I have some serious responsibilities.

I don't have any secrets (other than I prefer to remain anonymous here)...everything I do is above board and I can talk openly about them.

And I'm no longer a 'middle aged man'.  I'm in that period where I should be building wealth and getting ready for retirement.

I have no wealth to build on.  My savings took a solid shit in 2008 and I refuse to pour more into the cess pool.  I no longer trust banks, the stock market, or any other financial institution...including the FED and the US Government.  I doubt I will see a dollar of my contributions to Social Security.

While I am investigating the refinancing of my home from 7.5% to 3.8%...my mortgage payments, according to the amortization schedule, are paid into 2018 and I've adjusted my aggressiveness to force the mortgage servicer to recognize payments in advance.

In June, my asshole, useless, piece of shit brother in law died.  I was content to kick his corpse to the side of a road...my wife, however, placed a demand that he get buried.  Over the last three months my pay has been cut in half to cover his sorry ass with dirt.  In the meantime we've used what we did when we were first married and flat, fucking, broke...we did without.  Luckily we had some stores in place.  But I'm pretty pissed about missing my beer and tequila over this asshole.

I'll get over it.  But do not underestimate what can be done to do the seemingly impossible.  I just fucking did it.

Cooper Anderson's coverage of Sandy Hook has been suspected as an effort to push gun control. It has been said he was an intern at the CIA. Did he cover Bosnia?

Joe A's picture

Amanpour covered Bosnia. Bosnia made Amanpour's carreer. She married Rubin, sidekick of Albright who ensured that NATO bombed Serbia over Kosovo.

All true.

And it doesn't go far enough.

There has also been sponsorship and help to allow an increasingly small number of individuals to have control over an increasingly large percentage of media.

I am talking about influencing the outcome of merger reviews, covert financing, etc.

In a very real way, the department head do not work for the US gov't.  They work for a small number of influential individuals in or out of government or elected position.

You wrote: "Like any good intelligence agency, the CIA learned from its mistakes upon being exposed, and has since adjusted tactics."

Admit the CIA-Mossas controls your TV, Hollywood movies, talk show hosts and candidates.

Then get back to me, okay?

Oh, and another thing, Mike, 9-11 was an inside job.

"The CIA will find young journalists and mentor them."

And we also know that they will also find young impressionable people from less than ideal homes and "mentor" them as well into positions of power. Make them into puppets to be used and controlled by the CIA and the CIA's masters, Israel and the Rothschild banksters.

We know of two: Clinton, Obama.

kchrisc's picture

"Ronald Reagan was an actor by trade.   Why didn't you mention Ronald Reagan? "

First, because I have little evidence as to the fact.

Second, because he was more of a tool, like Carter, of the elites' Pentagon wing of power.

The CIA wing nearly succeeded in assassinating Reagan to get their guy, Bush Sr., into the Oval Office of the Puppet in Chief.

An American, not US subject.

Note: If one goes back to the release of the Pentagon Papers and works forward, he will find a tit-for-tat battle between the CIA and Pentagon wings of power--Pentagon Papers (CIA Op.), Watergate (Pentagon Op.), NSA leaks and Church Committee (CIA), New info and House investigation of the JFK assassination (Pentagon), 1983 bombing and killing of soldiers in Beirut (CIA), Iran-Contra revelations (Pentagon), gutting of the Pentagon's bases and power base in Europe and States during and after the Gulf War (CIA).

The CIA has now gained the upper hand by having 3 of the last four presidents actually be beholden to them. Bush Jr. was supposed to, but became co-opted by the Pentagon. Under Obama they have been gutting and replacing the Pentagon leadership further via firings of top brass, the take down of McChrystal and the wonderfully executed take down of Petraeus via the fake job at CIA (Compare the fates of Patraeus vs. that of Clapper). They are now in the process of taking over the Pentagon's main spying apparatus, the NSA, via the controlled Snowden "leaks" with "damage control" being handled by CIA asset Obama in the Oval Office.

Coming up next will be two years of scandals against Obama personally and the admin generally. Just like the last two years of CIA-Clinton's admin. The propaganda media is already beginning to morph over to the "critical" side of things, especially the CIA's mouthpiece, the NYT (The Pentagon's mouthpiece, the Washington Post, was neutered and "bought" in 2013). Look for more scandals and a huge one involving Obama's homosexuality over the next two years. In this way the CIA and the neo-cons can reinvigorate the right-wing, neo-con, evangelical Christian sheeple and seize power again in 2016. Another sign of this is and will be the coming out of the woodwork of prior neo-con organs like, Rove, Panetta, Cheney, Bush Jr., Wolfowitz*, Rush, Beck, etc.

I think Ulfkotte rhymes with "turncoat" to the CIA ; like Snowden to the NSA !

well, the CIA and the German spooks, had a deal to monitor French company EADS making Airbus, back a few years. It was in their common interest as Germany wanted more inside info on Eads, its partner under French control, and CIA wanted to have a lookie into Boeing's chief rival.

So everybody is everbody's buddy, according to the principle of Machiavelli's Prince, where the enemy --or potential enemy-- of my enemy, is my "temporary" friend.

Until "thieves" fall out and the NSA/CIA starts spying on Mutti and organising the "kontrol" of Ukraine and Poland according to Zbi's global chess game.

Wheels within wheels. The Stasi did not invent anything.

In fact the Venetian Segreta-- secret service-- was he first to use commerce and spying on Ottomans to achieve their aims. Charles V Inquisitorial services were their local rivals. Until Venice and Empire fought side by side at Lepanto.

The enemy of my enemy...what a dirty but lucrative game that's shown to be, as History proves --with El Lawrence of "seven pillars of wisdom" fame; Colonial office spy who delivered the Arabs on a plate to the Sykes-Picot divide of Ottoman collapse.

Whats new in Mesopotamia where these games continue... or in Homeland of CIA, the new Segreta and/or the new Inquisitorial Order of  Universal Empire!
