Not Just The Largest Economy – Here Are 26 Other Ways China Has Surpassed America

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Michael Snyder of The End of the American Dream blog,

In terms of purchasing power, China now has the largest economy on the entire planet, but that is not the only area where China has surpassed the United States.  China also accounts for more total global trade than the U.S. does, China consumes more energy than the U.S. does, and China now manufactures more goods than the U.S. does.  In other words, the era of American economic dominance is rapidly ending.  Global economic power is making a dramatic shift to the east, and that is going to have huge implications for our future.  We already owe the Chinese well over a trillion dollars, and as our economic infrastructure crumbles we are feverishly borrowing even more money in a desperate attempt to prop up our falling standard of living.  We can’t seem to match the work ethic, inventiveness and determination of China and other Asian nations and it is showing.  If we continue down this path, what will the future look like for future generations of Americans?

In terms of raw GDP, the U.S. is still number one, at least for now.  But according to the IMF, China is now the number one economy on the entire planet in terms of purchasing power…

The simple logic is that prices aren’t the same in each country: A shirt will cost you less in Shanghai than San Francisco, so it’s not entirely reasonable to compare countries without taking this into account. Though a typical person in China earns a lot less than the typical person in the US, simply converting a Chinese salary into dollars underestimates how much purchasing power that individual, and therefore that country, might have. The Economist’s Big Mac Index is a great example of these disparities.

So the IMF measures both GDP in market exchange terms, and in terms of purchasing power. On the purchasing power basis, China is overtaking the US right about now and becoming the world’s biggest economy.

When I first learned about this, I was quite stunned.

I knew that China’s economy had been roaring, but like most Americans I just assumed that the U.S. would continue to remain head and shoulders above everyone else.

Unfortunately, things are changing at a pace that is much faster than most people ever thought possible.  The following are 26 other ways that China has surpassed America…

#1 When you add up all imports and exports, China now accounts for more total global trade than the United States does.

#2 There is now more total corporate debt in China than there is in the United States.

#3 During 2013, we sold about 121 billion dollars worth of stuff to the Chinese, but they sold about 440 billion dollars worth of stuff to us.  That was the largest trade deficit that one nation has had with another nation in the history of the world.

#4 China is now the leading manufacturer of goods in the entire world.

#5 Back in 1998, the United States had 25 percent of the world’s high-tech export market and China had just 10 percent. Today, China’s high-tech exports are more than twice the size of U.S. high-tech exports.

#6 The United States had been the leading consumer of energy in the world for about 100 years, but during the summer of 2010 China took over the number one spot.

#7 China now has the largest new car market in the entire world.

#8 China has more foreign currency reserves than anyone else on the planet.

#9 China is the number one gold producer in the world.

#10 China is also the number one gold importer in the world.

#11 15 years ago, China was 14th in the world in published scientific research articles.  But now, China is expected to pass the United States and become number one very shortly.

#12 China is also expected to soon become the global leader in patent filings.

#13 China awards more doctoral degrees in engineering each year than the United States does.

#14 China has the world’s fastest train and the world’s most extensive high-speed rail network.

#15 China uses more cement than the rest of the world combined.

#16 Today, China produces nearly twice as much beer as the United States does.

#17 85 percent of all artificial Christmas trees are made in China.

#18 There are more pigs in China than in the next 43 pork producing nations combined.

#19 China is now the number one producer of wind and solar power on the entire globe.

#20 China produces more than twice as much cotton as the United States does.

#21 China produces more than three times as much coal as the United States does.

#22 China now produces 11 times as much steel as the United States does.

#23 China controls over 90 percent of the total global supply of rare earth elements.

#24 An investigation by the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services found more than one million counterfeit Chinese parts in the Department of Defense supply chain.

#25 According to author Clyde Prestowitz, China’s number one export to the U.S. is computer equipment.  According to an article in U.S. News & World Report, the number one U.S. export to China is “scrap and trash”.

#26 Nobel economist Robert W. Fogel of the University of Chicago is projecting that the Chinese economy will be three times larger than the U.S. economy by the year 2040 if current trends continue.

The Chinese are using some of their new wealth to buy up land, properties and businesses here in the United States.  In fact, just the other day we learned that a group from China is buying New York City’s Waldorf Astoria hotel.

For much, much more on this trend, please see some of my previous articles…

-”The Chinese Are Acquiring Large Chunks Of Land In Communities All Over America

And most Americans don’t realize this, but Chinese-made cars will soon be sold in the United States.

The following is from a recent WND article

Chinese-made cars will be making their way to the U.S. next year, and guess which company is going to start exporting them to our shores?

A Chinese company, of course.

Chinese-owned Volvo’s parent company, Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, will begin exporting its S60L from China to the United States as early as next year, according to a Reuters report which quoted a senior Volvo executive.

Volvo is trying to take advantage of two new Chinese factories that will make up an export hub to send vehicles to the U.S. and Russia.

Everywhere you look, China is dominating and America is in decline.

If this was a sporting event for little kids, the “mercy rule” would have been invoked by now.

Unfortunately, there is no “mercy rule” on the global economic stage.

The United States is going to have to get things together if it wants to have any hope of competing with the Chinese in the future.

The Chinese are kicking our tails and they know it.

One survey found found that 75 percent of those living in China believe that their country is on the right track.

On the other hand, Americans are not nearly as optimistic.

According to one average of recent surveys, only 28 percent of Americans believe that the United States is on the right track.

I think that those numbers say a lot.  We have been in decline for quite some time, but we can never seem to get the ship righted.

Hopefully our leaders can start coming up with some solutions soon, because we are running out of time.

No shit. China is a house of cards, even worse than the US. This isn't some kind of claim that the US gov or society is solvent, it isn't. But china is riding a massive credit bubble that's even worse than the west. It is going to pop, and there will be massive correction just like us. And if the US goes down, so does Europe, and vice versa, and they will have no one to sell their cheap shit to anymore, and down they go.

And where are those people ending up?

The US incarcerates more of its citizens than ANY other nation - at a rate of 716 per 100,000 (as of Oct 2013), and even higher according to other sources.

The United States has less than 5% of the world's population and 24% of the world's prison population.

We're number 1, we're number  1 ........

The biggest problem, in economic terms, facing the WORLD, is that automation is increasingly decreasing the number of given workers required to produce larger and more valuable baskets of goods.

This is already creating a massive excess of labor, and technological advancement is accelerating the pace and severity of this crisis.

Every nation is and will continue to be affected by this, but labor-intensive, export oriented economies will be disproportionately adversely impacted.

IOW, China & India, to name just two large, emerging markets, have a HUGE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL crisis inevitably staring them down, and will be more upset by this trend than smaller, developed markets.

Destroyed the whole article for not realizing that "our leaders" ARE the problem.

Anyone remember the last time "your leader" even pretended to acknowledge your best interests? Unless you're in the Free Shit Army and/or one of the "more equal/protected" classes, then I can safely say that answer is NO!

What people seem to be missing here is that by saying the Chinese are moving ahead of us they are giving tacit approval of centrally planned economies. By agreeing that china is going to take over the world, you are saying that communist central planning the the way to go forward. Ask yourself two questions: over the last couple decades, has china moved towards a capitalist, free market, or away from it. Also, ask yourself if markets are more, or less free in the US than they were 50 years ago? China is just as much, if not more, screwed as we are. However, they have been moving away from a pure communist economy towards a slightly more capitalist model, while the US and Europe have been moving away from the free market that made us great, and towards a govt run, centrally planned economy that has never worked in human history

I am old enough to remember when Japanese products were cheap junk. Then, twenty years after they got back in the game, suddenly the Japanese were manufacturing world-class quality products in almost every category of consumer and industrial items.

Or take South Korea. My favorite joke of 1989 was, "how do you double the value of your Hyundai? Fill up the gas tank!" Twenty years later, they were building some of the best cars in the world on a price/performance basis.

China, on the other hand, has been producing cheap crap for 35 years, with no quality improvements in sight anytime soon. China has singlehandedly ruined the manufacturing base for the entire fucking planet.

Yeah. I work with tech companies with major Chinese presence and employee bases. They preferentially hire chinese engineers trained outside of China, because the degrees inside China carry little weight -- plagarism and pay-for-grade are everywhere in the educational system, so they can't count on someone with a degree to actually be an engineer. There is also a massive degree of outside supervision to maintain quality standards inside China. The quality in China is imported by companies looking to access the cheap labor and large market. It's not an accident that the next step after Chinese manufacturing is robotic manufacturing, and that is being relocated back into the developed markets.

Chinese labor will face the exact same issues US labor has, with jobs being outsourced elsewhere, but unfortunately hasn't developed enough of a domestic high-tech base to be self sustaining to the degree we see in other geographies. If you look at all the supposedly made-in-China high tech products, the vast majority are assembled in China, with domestically produced PCBs (low value with a high degree of environmental damage) and ICs produced in US (microprocessors/ASICs), Japan/S. Korea (memory) or Taiwan (logic/ASIC circuits. and some memory) I don't expect this to change significantly until China invades Taiwan, at which time we'll just see US and European tech manufacturers re-home production domestically.

The iPhone could easily be produced in the US, Apple would just have to take a slight margin hit or charge $100 more.

I'm willing to bet we'll see US-manufactered iPhones (or smartphones) within a decade. Of course, there will be 10 people running a robitc manufacturing plant that covers 20 acres and produces 100 million units a year, but they'll be domestically produced.

You will not believe how hard it is to teach Geography and History of the World to you Americans.

Simple things like imperialism, cash flow, pests, distinct cultures.

Things you learn in Europe or South America in primary education until the 9th - ninth - school year, between age seven and 15 years old.

To explain how a troll @ Ned Zeppelin making a fool comment:

"O horse merde. China will fall."

Tell a guy like that China has a culture of at least three thousand years ago, the Chinese invented gunpowder, the compass, the seismograph etc. .

Read here about the horrors forget that Egypt and the pyramids were made by that ancient culture.

The Chinese and Egyptians invented the role each culture in his time.

The French used the Sphinx for target guns.

Until today no European or North American managed to build up again those things.

That's like taking a cloth to wipe ice.

I swear to you it is exhausting pscicologicamente talk to so many insane people without culture.

People who only looks at the navel and sees the last 70 years of history.

Just a guy who taught for children 4 years of Prophet Job has patience like I have.

All very nice, but according to Piketty, fears of growing Chinese ownership are a pure fantasy (Ch. 12). Wealthy western countries are much wealthier than they think. Total real estate and financial assets net of debt owned by European households today amounts to some 70 trillion euros, around 80 trillion by US households. By comparison, total assets of various Chinese sovereign foreign wealth funds plus the reserves of the bank of China represent around 3 trillion euros. Rich countries are not about to be taken over by poor countries, which would have to get much richer to do anything of the kind, and that will take many more decades. Just sayin'.

'financial assets'...they depend upon the stability of the underlying...the dollar....if the dollar goes tits up all those assets won't be worth much.

Lemme tell you about their vaunted high speed rail. I bought a one way ticket from Shanghai to Suzhou. Couldn't buy one for the return trip. Why? Trains full? No. The local mafia controlled the ticket sales and you couldn't buy a ticket at the station. You had to go to a shady guy in the parking lot charging a big multiple of the real (subsidized?) price.

Anti-ship ballistic missile: The anti-ship ballistic missile is a quasiballistic missile designed to hit a warship at sea. The Chinese military developed the "world's first anti-ship ballistic missile system". The United States Naval Institute in 2009 stated that such a missile would be large enough to destroy an aircraft carrier in one hit and that there was "currently ... no defense against it" if it worked as theorized.

Arteminisinin, anti-malarial treatment: The antimalarial drug of compound artemisinin found in Artemisia annua, the latter being a plant long used in traditional Chinese medicine, was discovered in 1972 by Chinese scientists in the People's Republic led by Tu Youyou and has been used to treat multi-drug resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Artemisinin remains the most effective treatment for malaria today and has saved millions of lives and is yielded one of the greatest drug discoveries in modern medicine.

Carbon aerogel: In 2013, scientists at Zhejiang University broke the world record for the world's lightest substance, a carbon aerogel weighing in at 0.16 mg/cc

Electronic cigarette: Hon Lik, a Chinese pharmacist, is widely credited with the invention of the first generation electronic cigarette. In 2003, he came up with the idea of using a piezoelectric ultrasound-emitting element to vaporise a pressurized jet of liquid containing nicotine diluted in a propylene glycol solution. This design produces a smoke-like vapour that can be inhaled and provides a vehicle for nicotine delivery into the bloodstream via the lungs. He also proposed using propylene glycol to dilute nicotine and placing it in a disposable plastic cartridge which serves as a liquid reservoir and mouthpiece.

Cure of a solid cancer: In 1956, Min Chiu Li, who was educated and worked in the USA after leaving China because of the communist takeover, and Roy Hertz, demonstrated that systemic chemotherapy could result in the cure of a widely metastatic malignant disease by his use of methotrexate to cure women of choriocarcinoma.

Maglev wind power generators: In 2006, a new type of wind power generator employing magnetic levitation (maglev) was showcased at the Wind Power Asia Exhibition in Beijing. Li Guokun was the chief scientific developer of the new maglev wind power generator, in collaboration with the Guangzhou Energy Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology Company based in Guangzhou. Li Guokun states that traditional wind turbines need high wind speeds to start, due to friction caused by their bearings. The new frictionless maglev wind generator requires wind speeds of only 1.5 m per second (or 5 km an hour) to start and are expected to cut operational costs for wind farms by half, i.e. overall cost of roughly 0.4 Chinese yuan per kilowatt hour.

Measurement of neutrino mixing angle ?13: The Daya Bay experiment in China reported the measurement of the parameter ?13 in March 2012. An important contribution to particle physics, this was named one of the runners-up breakthrough of the year in 2012 by Science.

Non-invasive prenatal diagnostic testing for Down's Syndrome: Previously, women underwent invasive testing such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS). This new maternal blood test has the potential to reduce the number of women referred for invasive testing for Down's syndrome by 98 percent. Developed by Chinese researchers in Hong Kong in 2008, this is hailed as a breakthrough.

Single-mode optical fiber: Professor Huang Hongjia of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, developed coupling wave theory in the field of microwave theory. He led a research team that successfully developed Single-mode optical fiber in 1980.

Stem cell educator therapy: Chinese and US researchers have produced remarkable results for this new treatment of obtaining stem cells from human cord blood to "re-educate" misbehaving immune cells. This result was published in the open-access journal BMC Medicine in January 2012, and offers hope for Type 1 diabetics and potentially may also be used to treat other auto-immune diseases if the approach lives up to early promise.

and my personal favorite

Turning Urine Samples into Brain Cells: This new technique of reprogramming ordinary cells present in urine into immature brain cells that can form multiple types of functioning neurons and glial cells was developed by Chinese researchers in China, and was published in the scientific journal Nature Methods in December 2012. Instead of using retrovirus, they used vectors which the researchers say is a breakthrough. This does not involve embryonic stem cells which come with serious drawbacks when transplanted, such as the risk of developing tumours. This technique makes the procedure of generating Induced pluripotent stem cells far easier and non-invasive, as the cells can be obtained from a urine sample instead of a blood sample or biopsy. This research proves human excreta could be a powerful source of cells to study disease, bypassing some of the problems of using stem cells, and could be useful for research studying the cellular mechanisms of neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's and for testing the effects of new drugs that are being developed to treat them.

China is brittle. The Communist Party thought that 40+ million deaths was not too high a price to pay to retain power. They will not hesitate to spill Chinese blood to stay in power. The desire of wealthy elites to be able to escape with via some type of Plan B is a massive vote of no-confidence. It is so bad that in the US there are investments that are planned around marketing to wealthy Chinese looking to buy their way to legal US residency. I have been pitched to myself. Canada recently cut back one such program.

Last point: China does not have the ability for the provinces to call an Article V convention to consider amendments.

The place is a fucking science fiction nightmare.

The cancer rate is soaring because THEY HAVE NO ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS. The growth rate is a lie. The game is to export shit to dumb fucks across the planet. Produce it cheaper no matter what (dump mercury in a river that your own family uses).

It is the matrix. You get used for your low level brain, then you consume, maybe marry, drink a lot of toxic water beer, get cancer from smog, sewer food and then die.

Meanwhile the 50,000 or so rich chinks - including the military - are moving out - taking their fucking cash and getting out of the shit hole they created. They are moving all over the world - none of them want to live where they shit. The rest will live a fast, miserable life cycle designed to suck them dry. #14 China has the world’s fastest train and the world’s most extensive high-speed rail network.

Fastest train? No. That would be either the Germans, Japanese or French, depending on who ran a test track the most recently. The top speed is about 571kph, and this does not include the JP maglev. This does not really matter as physics and costs cap functional top speeds at 320kph, perhaps a few kms/hour more but not much.

China HSR is from 250-310kph routinely on serviced track with paid passengers. A bit slower than some EU and Japanese trains, but still up to par.

Most extensive? Absolutely and new lines open each month this year and next.

I think China has more HSR than the rest of the world, combined.

BTW the entire Western Hemisphere has NO HSR. The Acela does not count. It only gets to 200kph for a few kms in Rhode Island.

"Numerous countries and foreign companies borrow in dollars for rates have been cheap. This trend has masked the decline in China for Chinese companies were borrowing dollars at 1% in Hong Kong and depositing in Beijing collecting 5%. However, because world trade is measured simply by capital movement, this carry-trade masked the fact that real trade was declining matching the performance of the Shanghai Index."

Them squinty eyed fuckers still can't drive worth a shit. China "surpasses" America in highway fatalities like 50:1.

They also rule when it comes to slave labor and shitting on the side of the road.

Why the anger and fear over this? Ya all just can't help yourselves. Envy, fear and ignorance working in concert. Economics isn't a zero sum game. If china surpasses the U.S. as the global economic leader, but it results in an economic improvement in Americans lives, does the world end? No, but what does happen is you provide the fuel for elite busy-bodies to start cold and hot wars.

May as well accept it, it's happening.

LOL.  A lot of Butthurt Merikans.

But you can grasp this little stat:

Amerika is still #1 for gun ownership.  Not that it makes a fat lot of difference to the way your Gov treats it's citizens.

Well done.  USA! USA!  USSA! USSA!
