Dallas Hospital Worker Tests Positive For Ebola In First Person-To-Person Transmission On US Soil

Tyler Durden's picture

And then there was #2. A few hours ago, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, announced that a health care worker who cared for dying Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan, has tested positive for the virus after a preliminary test, officials said early Sunday. If confirmed, it would be the first known person-to-person transmission of the disease in the United States. The name of the patients is currently unknown, what is known however, is that the worker was "considered to be at low risk for contracting the virus" and the he or she was wearing full protective gear when treating Duncan, suggesting - yet again - that there is a transmission mechanism which is not accounted for under conventional protocol.

Confirmatory testing of the second case on U.S. soil will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the statement from the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

The worker reported a fever late Friday and was isolated and referred for testing. "We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

Alas, until Friday night, said spread was once again completely uncontained if said worker was able to interact with countless others, who will become symptomatic only after they in turn have spread the disease to an unknown number of their own friends, acquaintances and co-workers.

The statement added that people who had contact with the health care worker after symptoms emerged "will be monitored based on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus."

This announcement came hours after New York's JFK Airport began an Ebola screening program, taking the temperatures of passengers arriving from three West African Countries.

The full statement from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Texas Patient Tests Positive for Ebola

A health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who provided care for the Ebola patient hospitalized there has tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test at the state public health laboratory in Austin. Confirmatory testing will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The health care worker reported a low grade fever Friday night and was isolated and referred for testing. The preliminary ?test result was received late Saturday.

"We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

Health officials have interviewed the patient and are identifying any contacts or potential exposures. People who had contact with the health care worker after symptoms emerged will be monitored based on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus.

Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to contaminated objects such as needles. People are not contagious before symptoms such as fever develop.

Here is Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dr. Daniel Varga held a news conference Sunday morning to inform the public that a health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas test positive for the Ebola virus after coming in close contact with Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan.

With a wife who is an ER doc, I am very concerned about this.  However, none of the articles I've read (including the one linked to in this one) indicate what the healthworker position was (i.e. nurse, doctor, housekeeping, etc).   I most certainly did NOT see anything suggesting that person was in full containment gear

"what is known however, is that the worker was "considered to be at low risk for contracting the virus" and the he or she was wearing full protective gear when treating Duncan,"

Health care workers treating Duncan were to follow CDC protocol that included wearing protective gear.

I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.

But I wonder if how these people are getting it is maybe when they are taking OFF their protective gear.   Are they decontaminating before they take it off.   It seems like they aren;t wearing their space suits and getting decontaminated before they remove their gear.  Seems like they are wearing standard medical gear.  Maybe that's why so many health officials are getting it.

I also find it odd they haven't found the transmission method yet or are withholding it from they public to make us feel powerless.

Crap I hate this.

Ebola is a Biosecurity Level 4 pathogen.     Repeat: Ebola is a Biosecurity Level 4 pathogen.
The PPE recommended by the CDC is an elaborate impermeable "spacesuit" type suit...with strict procedures for entering the contaminated rooms and exiting--including showers and other forms of decontamination.

Given the cost, I'm sure these healthcare workers are not only inadequately trained for Ebola type precautions, but totally inadequately suited up, and they wonder why health care workers are becoming infected.

The hospitals also most probably don't have the special precaution rooms that are built for BSL4 --separate from the rest of the hospital.
Training only does so much--they need the proper gear and facilities, which are currently inadequate.
Either provide the proper gear and training, or send these patients straight to the CDC or another facility equipped to handle BSL4.
Coming soon to a city near you no thanks to .gov.  I'm sure 'Miffed' would agree.

I agree esprit. But my hospital claims they are ready for a patient because they will use the same precautions used with flu and TB patients. This is what the CDC has told them. This absolutely contradicts the requirements of handling a BSL 4 agent.

We are going into flu season. It's the misdiagnosed flu patient that worries me the most. I will be handling their specimen using a BSL 2 hood using a disposable thin lab coat and gloves. The specimen (UVT media) must be vortexed prior to testing. So when I remove the lid there will be aerosolization. No matter how careful I am, my pipet may become contaminated as I draw off the sample to be analysed. I must remove the cartridge from the hood and place it on the analyzer. At this point, I remove my gloves so not to contaminate the lab but this is impossible to do perfectly without touching anything. The chances I have virus outside of the cartridge is great and when I place it in the analyzer, it too will become contaminated. Other people running other tests on that analyzer will be exposed though they don't realize it. Everyone working in Molecular Diagnostics has a great chance for exposure. Everyone in other lab departments have risk too just running routine tests.

There is no room for error with this agent. We are watching the research of transmissibility of Ebola in real time with the perfect model...US! The Nazis were executed for war crimes and human experimentation. I expect no less when those who brought this agent to our country face judgement.

Remember: We live in an age where repeal of the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 allows for outright propaganda of the American people by the American Government because of repeal by the NDAA 2013. Suspend your fear for a moment and look at this Ebola scare for the opportunities it creates. Now mix in a healthy dose of propaganda. In all the hysteria no one is going to see this for the FACTS. You hear "Diagnosed with Ebola in Texas" and you think "I could be next!". You see images of people lying in the streets of Liberia. You know they are dead of Ebola. But wait, they arent bleeding? What if, with half the population gone, instead of fighting for resources we have an abundance of them? Every other house is empty, garages with all the sports cars and motorcycles of previous dead owners free for the taking, instead of wondering if someone is going to rob you they are happy to share their bounty with a fellow survivor?

Too weird when you think about it.

If you have any money, the last place you want to keep it is in a bank.

If you're in trouble and need help, the last person you want to call is a cop.

If you expect justice the last place you will find it is in a court.

If you're sick, the last place you want to be is in a hospital.

edit: Add some more it's fun.

If you want an education the last place you'd get it is in a school.

If you're in need of leadership, the last place you'd find it is from self-appointed "leaders".

If you want to be informed, the last place to look is the media.

No. It was NOT WORTH REPEATING. While it may be true but that was DISTRACTION and an attempted hijack of the discussion.

THE TRUTH IS...This nurse in protective clothing gets Ebola.

The family, exposed to Duncan directly, and, exposed to his infectious waste in a Dallas Apartment with no protective clothing does not?

Something here is not reconciling. No. It is not adding up.

My bet is that many more people have Ebola in the USA and the CDC is doing their best to QUASH THE STORY.

This is done for expedience's sake as to not cause a public panic.

..

Sun, 10/12/2014 - 17:19 | 5321695 chunga
chunga's picture

Do you really *know* any of that is TRUE? I don't.

It is TRUE that is what we are being told. That is all we know. Taking this at face value almost suggests that wearing protective gear and following "protocol" increases the risk? Being locked in a room with infectious waste does not?

You know as well as I do that CDC is an outfit not worthy of trust. If there is an effort underfoot to cause enough hysteria to usher in another Patriot Act; then TPTB might be trying to cause panic.

If they're trying to prevent people from flipping out, they're doing a terrible job because the response to this has been absurd.

We're trying to plan our own personal response knowing full well that we are constantly lied to. That's all we can do because I don't think any of us know the truth and probably never will.

In any lie there is an element of truth. The more truth that exists within the lie is directly proportional to the "credibility" of the lie, or, rather the amount of people whom will buy into it.

Yes Chunga. I initially pointed out the discrepancy to which you refer. In fact I am pleased that we are now back on track with the topic rather than talking about the corrupt banks (That which we already know about.)

A point is that they are not acting to seal the borders. I do not believe that this Ebola pandemic is a false flag being utilized to usher in Martial Law.

On the other hand I do not believe that the US Government will allow this crisis, one which they are actively attempting to create, to go to waste and notl use it to usher in Martial Law. In fact I believe that they will use this to usher in Martial Law. I believe that they will use it to blame the oncoming Financial and Social Collapse. In fact those are the reasons behind them not acting to close the borders or to stop air traffic into and around the USA.

If it is a false flag then it is actually a far better case as if we "bug out" then, perhaps, we can escape the clutches of the Police State without the fear of infection.

However if this is not a false flag then may the Good Lord help us since if it is not the God Damned Government that will get you then the damned virus certainly will.

That is the reality which needs to be discussed. The fucking Banks and Financial Systemic Frauds are MOOT either way.

The systemic financial fraud piece is moot unless of course this is a plot to make huge sums of money; something I also don't rule out. ;-|

If the threat is a false flag then the money matters. If it is not a false flag, and I am more inclined toward that disposition, then the money is moot.

You are not taking this lightly? Neither am I...neither am I...

It is very serious...actually it may be deadly serious.

Best wishes....And...GET YOUR WIFE TO TAKE AN IMMEDIATE LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Yes I am screaming it. It is not just for her sake but it is FOR YOUR SAKE. She will end up bringing it home.

My Point Exactly.

The last place you will get the truth is from the Media.

In this case, they are huffing and puffing over-fucking time to blow this shit into a full blown panic-in-the-steets.

They are gonna have everyone so fucking terrified that once they declare the lock-down and start forcing god-know-what "vaccine" on people, the people will beg for it.

Not just that, but rat-snitch on anyone who doesn't want a govt. shot.

You should be very fucking concerned, just not about Ebola.

This thing is NOT about Ebola. It IS about ANOTHER (bigger than) 9/11 style power grab for the globalists.

Can you think of a better fucking cover story to keep everyone locked down while your shock innoculation troops go door to door, giving vaccines and taking those pesky guns?

"See... They didn't defend you against Ebola! So What good are they? Just be a good boy and give 'em here... Then we can give you the shot. You know there is a one year prison term for the refusniks... That makes you a felon, and you can't have a gun as felon.. So whaddya say? Huh Cowboy?"

This is also classic "Gatesian" technique ALA MS Windows Marketing... No Wonder he is involved at some level with the whole-a Ebola scam-ola.

Wait till the fucking vaccine "updates" start coming the 3rd Thursday of every month.. From India... and you'll see...

When I start seeing articles about how the Globalists are "waning"... I think of that vicious dog in my area that feigns having a bad leg until he's closed within attack range of you...

They have us EXACTLY where they want us with this thing.

And the "Stress Vaccine" AKA Happy Shot is coming for us all at the end of a swat teams gun barrel. it will be labeled as "Ebola n43x2" MarkIV Vaccine.

It's the final stroke, a takeover aided by panic and fear.

Got news:

ITS NOT ABOUT THE EBOLA.

1. How the FUCK do you know what is going on in W.Africa?

2. If something is, how do you know what it is?

3. Have you seen anyone (personally or on media of any type) that looks to be suffering from classic Ebola?

4. Have you questioned why they are panicing away with one hand while letting the border remian open and flying in fresh cases?

5. Have you asked yourself honestly: Who Benefits from this?

6. Have you noticed that the coverage of this has been sensationalized beyond its true scope?

7. Have you noticed that the coverage of this is designed to generate fear (which won't help in any situation)?

I see the government acting like 3 people in a fat woman's track suit trying to ride a bicycle.

I see a lot of scared shitless people ready to piss down their legs into their boots and beg Big Daddy Govt. to "Come Save Me".

I see ANOTHER lying sack-o-shit .Gov agency doing what it does best -- Autofellate in public on camera.

I can remember the NIST after 9/11, the EPA during 9/11, FEMA after Katrina and remember our current bozo-in-chief encoding everything he would do in the future by promising not to do it.

The narrative I am talking about is the one being pushed up our ass right at this second.

I might add, I am seeing this after years of efforts to destabilize the Continent of Africa, The recent Ukrainian fiasco, the 2008 Fin Collapse, the ever increasing Big Brotherism from a unified media, corporate and governmental "Engine of Change". I also see a lot of well-meaning idiots pulling the whole wagon for them.

Sorry, the Schwarzwald Schwein (and their particular traditional infiltration points where the locals get particularly irked when the wetbacks invade the local land of opportunity) are northwest of me, but on a federal level it's the whole northeast border with Germany (or the entire 360-degree EU border for those in French or Italian oriented cantons).

Regardless, in the USSA - even if the immigrants had the same color skin and spoke the same language and came well dressed with college degrees- the exact same immigration and border issues and stresses would still exist today. (Just like they did a hundred years ago in America, or elsewhere today- see HK/Mainland China for an example from the "other side" of the world. The only thing still exceptional about Americans is their love of drama queens and ability to confuse and distract themselves by focusing on irrelevant and tangential issues (such as playing the race card, when discussing border security).

Border security is very important to the economic and medical health as well as physical security of a country, the US border is a much larger than 5 airport arrival halls, and EVD68 has been medically documented in far more dead Americans recently than ebola has.

So like I said - common sense would be dealing with the immediate and verified threat first - EVD68 crossing from Mexico to wherever DHS facilitates distribution of the virus... and ebola in Texas.

So, the infection could come from "workers" touching their face prior to decon, or it could be from aerosol or airborne transmission. Or something else, like the virus surviving decon proceedures.

As I posted elsewjhere, CDC does not recommend proper equipment.  Paper gowns and masks.  Can't be sprayed down.

One reason the US is not ready for this is that in an authoritarian state there is no room for individual flexibility.  A pt with ebola will be treated little differently from one with, say, an MRSA colonization of his nose (no direct threat to anyone).  I'm not just taking about protective equipment, I'm taking about nurses going in and out of his room every 5 minutes to do all the busy work that procedures mandate.  A second nurse coming in to check and co-sign an insulin shot.  10 people rushig in and starting CPR when his heart stops, cause that's what you do when someones heart stops.  An administrator coming in to get him to sign some bullshit paperwork, then taking it away.  Everyone taking off their protective gear to take him to CT, because that's the rules, no PPE outside the pt's room during transport.

When the hopitals or (more likely) the workers rebel against standard procedure and the CDC, then you'll know there is a chance of containing this.  Until then, no real hope.  Infected healthcare workers will spread it.  We already kill 100's of thousands each year accidently, ebola won't improve that any.

Under Freeden’s logic, opening the borders and allowing more potentially infected people in from Africa should decrease the infection spread.

Obviously the Little Peeples [esp the ones who got broke by the QEs and zero interest rate for 10 years] wouldn’t understand these types of sophisticated logical thingies.
