Dallas Hospital Worker Tests Positive For Ebola In First Person-To-Person Transmission On US Soil

Tyler Durden's picture

And then there was #2. A few hours ago, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, announced that a health care worker who cared for dying Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan, has tested positive for the virus after a preliminary test, officials said early Sunday. If confirmed, it would be the first known person-to-person transmission of the disease in the United States. The name of the patients is currently unknown, what is known however, is that the worker was "considered to be at low risk for contracting the virus" and the he or she was wearing full protective gear when treating Duncan, suggesting - yet again - that there is a transmission mechanism which is not accounted for under conventional protocol.

Confirmatory testing of the second case on U.S. soil will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the statement from the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

The worker reported a fever late Friday and was isolated and referred for testing. "We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

Alas, until Friday night, said spread was once again completely uncontained if said worker was able to interact with countless others, who will become symptomatic only after they in turn have spread the disease to an unknown number of their own friends, acquaintances and co-workers.

The statement added that people who had contact with the health care worker after symptoms emerged "will be monitored based on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus."

This announcement came hours after New York's JFK Airport began an Ebola screening program, taking the temperatures of passengers arriving from three West African Countries.

The full statement from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Texas Patient Tests Positive for Ebola

A health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who provided care for the Ebola patient hospitalized there has tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test at the state public health laboratory in Austin. Confirmatory testing will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The health care worker reported a low grade fever Friday night and was isolated and referred for testing. The preliminary ?test result was received late Saturday.

"We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

Health officials have interviewed the patient and are identifying any contacts or potential exposures. People who had contact with the health care worker after symptoms emerged will be monitored based on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus.

Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to contaminated objects such as needles. People are not contagious before symptoms such as fever develop.

Here is Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dr. Daniel Varga held a news conference Sunday morning to inform the public that a health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas test positive for the Ebola virus after coming in close contact with Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan.

Folks will be "intaken" at the hospitals. There is no way around it. Folks will go thinking they have other illnesses and it will trun out to be Ebola.

Think about this, How does a person in full protective suit gets infected but NOT one person in Mr.Duncan's family. Or are they just not reporting it.

......Not to mention the slums of Houston, Dallas, New York, Chicago, L.A. , etc.

Ovomit has shipped tens of thousands of unvetted illegals into evey state of the country.  The schools are likely already filled with thousands of infected illegals, carrying dozens of diseases.  Myriad pandemics may soon overwhelm us, bringing martial law and suspension of our constitutional protections.

Thousands of our troops will soon be returning from Africa infected with Ebola and God only knows what other infectious pestilences.

ALL international travel and product importations should be banned, if we wnat to survive as a nation.  If you really don't understand what is gong on here, you are part of the problem.  This is not an accident.

aren't slums, favelas etc mostly 1-3 storey? which means the population density is not so high as in high-rise areas? of course this is 'compensated' by the lacking sanitation.

actually what is most troublesome, is the fact that these high population areas are the best petri dish. it's enough that one carrier gets in and we will have 'immediately' thousands spreading out.

Another thought occurred to me this morning.

We are using data from West Africa on our projections for spread and incubation times.

There may well be a natural immunity level in that population, that we in the west

simply don't have.Bad as the African situation is, it could actually be far worse here,

Actually, they have a bunch of Ethiopians in Isreal. They didn't want them, but they had to let them in as they claimed to be Jews and were found to be Jews, the descendents of a couple of Isrealites who ended up there a few millenia ago. While Jewish heritage is passed in the female line (its always knownwho the mother of a child is, even if the father is questionable), those people were practicing the religion.

Everyday a new case has been popping up throughout the world. this virus in far from contained. This virus has worked overtime to pick up "critical mass." I'm referring to the point where enough people are infected with the virus that it can sustain a chain reaction and expand out of control.

Yes, the bad news is Ebola may have already reached critical mass and may now be impossible to contain. The economic and humanitarian implications of this are massive and it could change everything. More on why we should be very concerned in the article below.

Obama is saying to Africa, if you have been exposed to the Ebola and don't have a fever yet, come to the US.

This a start to the growth of cases within the US. Mass transit, restaurants and bars will be all places that will spread Ebola.

In restaurants and bars saliva comes into play as well as people coughing and/or sneezing.
Sanitation may not be good among the illegals working there.

A friend of mine (who is a doctor) said that while there may be an unknown transmission mechanism that it was far more likely that healthcare workers are not using the hazmat suits and protective gear properly. Particularly if they are cleaning up bodily fluids. They may walk out of the room and remove the head gear or gloves without taking proper precautions. Hospitals are going to have to use some ad hoc decontamination procedures like hosing down workers and/or disposing of the gear.

I don't think we know what procedures they went through afterwards.  I suspect that they were not allowed to just leave the room and casually discard the suits - they are more likey to be required to be washed down and decontaminated before getting out of the suits.  I suspect this disease is far more contagious than we are led to believe.

Biosafety level 4

This level is required for work with dangerous and exotic agents that pose a high individual risk of aerosol-transmitted laboratory infections, agents which cause severe to fatal disease in humans for which vaccines or other treatments are not available, such as Ebola virus, Bolivian and Argentine hemorrhagic fevers, Marburg virus,  Lassa virus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, and various other hemorrhagic diseases.

When dealing with biological hazards at this level the use of a positive pressure personnel suit, with a segregated air supply is mandatory.

Listen up! Stop your airtravel now!

YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE THAT AIRPLANE HAS BEEN!!!

Not only do people get on airplanes, airplanes get around. It's a double vector. An airplane that flew to Liberia last week, could be on a domestic flight this week. Airplanes break and when they do, other airplanes get shuffled around the system to fill the holes caused by the ones down for maintenance.

The systems in an airplane are like paradise for germs and viruses. The air in an airplane is recycled. The air goes through a compressor in order to keep the pressure up in the cabin. The compressor is warm and WET-- perfect for incubating disease germs. The potable water tanks are uncleanable. After several years, they are filled with bio-slime, bacteria and other pathogens. The tolets spray a fine aerosol back into the interior of the head when they are "flushed". The heads are so small that it is impossible to go in there and not touch some filthy surface. When you think of using an airplane restroom, remember that you enter that BLACK HOLE OF DEATH at your peril.

The plastic and cloth interior of an airplane is heaven-made for pathogens. There is no way to disinfect such a porous interior. It is IMPOSSIBLE.

Do you think an airline is going to actually do what is needed to decontaminate an airplane? They won't. At best they wil send in subcntractors (illiterate illegal aliens)  to do a cursory spray-down with perfume aka "disinfectant". An airplane contaminated with Ebola is like bedclothes. the only way to avoid subsequent infection is to BURN IT. Who's going to burn a multi-million dllar airplane?

Crews cycle from airplane to airplane on a continual basis. I'll tell you what a Flight Attendant is. He/she is a FUCKING DISEASE VECTOR!!!! passengers touch these poor people, cough on them, vomit on them... if I was a FA, I'd fucking quit yesterday.

I am a retired airline pilot, and I think I might know what I'm talking about. I hope to God I never have to fly, ever again.

I read somewhere that the dogs are carriers, they get it from eating corpses.

If the CDC ever recommends killing all the dogs, we'll see a revolution.  Dogs are more important than babies in the US.  Certainly more important than foetuses.

And me, dog meat was was my fallback plan.  Better rethink that one.

From Planet Princeton:

Dr. Nancy Snyderman Back from Africa, Seen in Public

by Krystal Knapp on October 9, 2014 , 6:11 pm
Several Planet Princeton readers have reported seeing NBC News Chief Medical Editor Dr. Nancy Snyderman in public over the past day.

Snyderman allegedly was seen sitting in her car outside of the Peasant Grill in Hopewell Boro this afternoon. A reader reported that a man who was with her got out of the car and went inside the restaurant to pick up a take-out order. Another man was in the back seat of her black Mercedes. Snyderman had sunglasses on and had her hair pulled back, the reader said.

An American freelance cameraman working with Snyderman in Liberia last week tested positive for Ebola. Snyderman, a resident of Princeton, was flown back to the United States with a crew member on a private charter flight this weekend. Snyderman and her crew were going to be placed under voluntary quarantine for 21 days as a precaution, NBC News President Deborah Turness announced in a written statement on Oct. 3 (see the letter below). NBC said the group would be closely monitored and was showing no symptoms or warning signs of Ebola.

On Tuesday, NBC News President Deborah Turness said in a statement sent to staff members that Snyderman and her crew were doing well and in good health. “While they are deemed to be at low risk, we have agreed with state and local health authorities that our team will not come to work, and they will stay at home taking their temperatures twice daily and staying in touch with the local health authorities for the remainder of the recommended 21-day period,” Turness said.

Snyderman is not under any kind of mandatory quarantine order by the CDC or the state because she is at a very low risk of contracting Ebola. Any confinement is voluntary.

NBC did not respond to inquiries about Snyderman today, and Snyderman could not be reached for comment.

Snyderman has been NBC’s chief medical correspondent since 2006. She joined the network after 15 years as a correspondent with ABC. She also previously served as a vice president at Johnson & Johnson.

The infected cameraman, age 33, was hired last week to be a second cameraman for Snyderman, who was with three other NBC News employees on assignment in Liberia reporting on the Ebola outbreak. The cameraman, who is also a writer, came down with symptoms on Oct. 1. He felt tired and achy, and was running a slight fever. He immediately quarantined himself and sought medical advice. He tested positive for the Ebola virus about 12 hours later. He is the fourth American to have contracted Ebola in Liberia. He has been working in Liberia on various projects for the past three years. He is being flown back to the United States for treatment at a medical center that is equipped to handle Ebola patients. Two American aid workers were infected in July while working for Samaritan’s Purse in Monrovia. Last month another doctor as diagnosed with the virus after working at a local hospital in Liberia. Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan died this week in Dallas.

Update Saturday, Oct. 11: State of New Jersey Issues Mandatory Quarantine for Snyderman and crew.

The text of the letter to NBC staff from Turness:

As you know, Dr. Nancy Snyderman and our news team are in Liberia covering the Ebola outbreak. One of the members of their crew is an American freelance cameraman who has worked in Liberia for the past three years and has recently been covering the epidemic for US media outlets. On Tuesday he began working with our team. Today, he tested positive for Ebola.

We are doing everything we can to get him the best care possible. He will be flown back to the United States for treatment at a medical center that is equipped to handle Ebola patients. We are consulting with the CDC, Medicins Sans Frontieres and others. And we are working with Dr. Nancy on the ground in Liberia.

We are also taking all possible measures to protect our employees and the general public. The rest of the crew, including Dr. Nancy, are being closely monitored and show no symptoms or warning signs. However, in an abundance of caution, we will fly them back on a private charter flight and then they will place themselves under quarantine in the United States for 21 days – which is at the most conservative end of the spectrum of medical guidance.

We know you share our concern for our colleagues

How many people with treatable conditions will die as they will not go to a hospital due to fear?

Thanks President Obola! I realize that your intellectual powers are vastly superior to mine, and I know thinking that stopping all transit means from outbreak areas and sealing the borders are really stupid thoughts on my part.

The sad truth is our Federal government deliberately avoiding taking common sense steps including a travel ban to nations with active infections and 3-week travel quarantines of people coming from all African nations plus common stop-over points of people travelling from Africa.  The CDC just lost all credibility with their dismissal of transmission risk and failure to take appropriate action.  As this spreads, there will be an early effort to 'RESCUE' people off to quarantine camps.  If you allow yourself to be taken, these camps will end up having high transmission rates, and a lot of people will die at camp.  Think Treblinka or Auschwitz, but without the Nazis having to do anything to kill those who are CONTAINED.

One question I have is if a survivor's serum can be used as a treatment and/or provide immunity to the disease, are there stockpiles of serum from this or a previous outbreak for the fortunate ones?  And if survivor serum turns out to be the best bet against Ebola, you probably don't want to be one of the first known suvivors if the SHTF.

I am guessing at some parts of this.

We know it is blood transfusions that have a real effect. Blood has a shelf life so it will not be something stockpiled from last outbreak unless that was something pretty recent. Blood type has to match. Brantley offered his blood to Duncan. They were not compatible.

I could see s survivors farm where they feed you, exercise you, make you drink lots of fluid, take supplements, so that they could harvest blood from you sooner. Rich folks send hunters on expeditions to bag one who is the correct blood type, keep them back at the ranch, in some "guest quarters."

The weird will start turning pro about now.

I like the last paragraph in that part copied from the Texas Health Department statement saying how it is spread. CLEARLY that isn't simply the case as people in full protective gear wouldn't be getting it.

Going to be like all the keynesians who go on about government spending being the key while ignoring reality showing otherwise- we'll keep hearing how Ebola is only spread that way as people get infected without any actual direct contact with infected people proving the theory is wrong. Annoying how people ignore reality for theory.
