Dallas Hospital Worker Tests Positive For Ebola In First Person-To-Person Transmission On US Soil

Tyler Durden's picture

And then there was #2. A few hours ago, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, announced that a health care worker who cared for dying Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan, has tested positive for the virus after a preliminary test, officials said early Sunday. If confirmed, it would be the first known person-to-person transmission of the disease in the United States. The name of the patients is currently unknown, what is known however, is that the worker was "considered to be at low risk for contracting the virus" and the he or she was wearing full protective gear when treating Duncan, suggesting - yet again - that there is a transmission mechanism which is not accounted for under conventional protocol.

Confirmatory testing of the second case on U.S. soil will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, the statement from the Texas Department of State Health Services said.

The worker reported a fever late Friday and was isolated and referred for testing. "We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

Alas, until Friday night, said spread was once again completely uncontained if said worker was able to interact with countless others, who will become symptomatic only after they in turn have spread the disease to an unknown number of their own friends, acquaintances and co-workers.

The statement added that people who had contact with the health care worker after symptoms emerged "will be monitored based on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus."

This announcement came hours after New York's JFK Airport began an Ebola screening program, taking the temperatures of passengers arriving from three West African Countries.

The full statement from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Texas Patient Tests Positive for Ebola

A health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital who provided care for the Ebola patient hospitalized there has tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test at the state public health laboratory in Austin. Confirmatory testing will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The health care worker reported a low grade fever Friday night and was isolated and referred for testing. The preliminary ?test result was received late Saturday.

"We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

Health officials have interviewed the patient and are identifying any contacts or potential exposures. People who had contact with the health care worker after symptoms emerged will be monitored based on the nature of their interactions and the potential they were exposed to the virus.

Ebola is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids of a sick person or exposure to contaminated objects such as needles. People are not contagious before symptoms such as fever develop.

Here is Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Mayor Mike Rawlings and Dr. Daniel Varga held a news conference Sunday morning to inform the public that a health care worker at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas test positive for the Ebola virus after coming in close contact with Ebola patient Thomas Eric Duncan.

Here's something to think about. Considering the generally better state of American immune systems, might we expect to see incubation times toward the 21-day side of the scale? Or, perish the thought, beyond?

One element of containing this is to give West African Ebola survivors priority immigration status if they are willing to come here to work on the front line with sick Ebola patients in our hospitals.  They are the only ones who are for sure immune to the virus.  Our health officials should stop pretending they know more about the behavior of this beast than they do. They should have an assume the worst mentality until this strain of Ebola is better understood.

Ebola has been found alive in the semen of a survivor after 82 days.

Given the low numbers of survivors and test patients, 6 months after the initial infection might be a safer estimate for when the virus is finally cleared from the body.

Sooo...a little over 2 weeks since Duncan got here and infected who knows how many people. It took this long for the second person in contact (heavily shielded by personal protective equipment) to pop up positive. The next week should be interesting. Hopefully not.

Things are hot everywhere it seems. Not just Ebola. If I had the means to bug out with my family, I would. Unfortunately, I can't. Not many can.

What a fucking nightmare scenario this could be.

I saw this post on Friday night late, but not picked up anywhere else.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/11/world/africa/officials-admit-a-defeat-...

I think we all understand that the US and most of the world has a "better" medical infrastructure than West Africa.  And maybe between the WHO, CDC and all things USAMRIID West Africa is just another sandbox to test theories and therapies.

But what this less than distributed article describes is that that county, with the influence of Western relief agencies, decided to withdraw all care and otherwise let Ebola burn itself out without any intervention aside from aspirin and gloves.

I am pretty jaded in my older age, but this admonition really shook me.

Maybe I am getting too soft.

Somewhere between the SL population stats and reported infections, the current abandonment of government/international relief equates to less than 0.05% of the country being infected.

But another way, it is like the US building all these "FEMA camps" for infectious disease, but then turning out the lights after only 1.6 million people get sick.

In any case, my friend found this NYT story on Reddit and posted a comment that it was proof that no government could promise to solve these pandemic issues 100% and everyone would need to care for their families, etc in time.  They also posted a general "Pray for Africa" in their comment.

More amazing than the story itself, my friend's Ebola comment was taken down from Reddit by the moderators.

Everyone be super careful with all the hysteria and conspiracy junk.

Treat this thing like the flu this season. Droplets move through the air as an aerosol.  It may not be "airborne" but you don't need to bath in Ebola juices to catch this bug.

Good luck to everyone.

Curiously there has not been a single word about any of Eric Duncan's relatives and others who were in the Dallas apartment with him.  Now we are told this nurse became infected in spite of protective measures.  Something does not add up.  Did the nurse then become infected by some more direct contact? Are Duncan's relatves are already dead and it's being covered up?  Is there no one in the media in contact with them by phone or computer?  Something stinks.

Virus levels increase drastically in the later stages of the disease in what is known as 'amplification'.

"Reluctantly, Jallah and the others left the hospital and returned to Troh’s apartment. While a cousin swept the floors, Jallah placed the blanket she had bought back on her mother’s bed, sprayed disinfectant throughout the apartment and sprinkled liquid Clorox on the furniture.

“Don’t sleep in that bed,” she told Troh... Later, she bought her mother sanitizers, a makeshift mattress and two new blankets."

"When she got back to her apartment, she instructed her four children not to touch her, sealed her clothes in a plastic bag and took a bath laced with Clorox."

Ebola could be a hoax.  They want you to have a reason to queue for a vaccine full of nanobots.

If you don’t take the vaccine you’ll go to the camp for ‘observation’.  Though, upon arrival you’ll be cremated.  Later a message will be sent back to kin, ‘He had Ebola, the ash is safe.  Enclosed.”

Ebola is bringing America to it's knees kicking and screaming having to come back to the real world as there's way quantitated justified numbers, studies and reports is going to fix a real world problem.  Sad it has to be this by all means and so sad the nurse caught it too.

Yeah they tried to blame the EMR at the start and found out that didn't work as technology is the first hit anywhere in healthcare wiht problems.

http://ducknetweb.blogspot.com/2014/10/sadly-its-ebola-thats-bringing-us...

Furthermore I told HHS folks at the ONC, they were crazy trying to create a think tank now to define safety with medical records.  Vendors do that pretty well as they have an incentive too, we could use a think tank though for safety with buying stock with dangerous algos though:)

From what I have read, the most infectious phase of the virus is at death- the human body is loaded.

Probably, as a victim becomes close to the end, the virus is exhaled in the air they are breathing, thus alowing it to become truly airborne. For how long is a guess. I would  bet anyone within a few feet could catch it at that point.

The crime here is the govt allowing a Level 4 pathogen into the country. Either hold them accountable or throw them out.

Full protective gear doesn't help when the person wearing it doesn't know how to take it off safely.  This will happen all over the nation since staffs have not been trained as to how to decontaminate, disrobe, and dispose of gear which has been exposed to contaminants.

A key question is, "How many peopl ewho weren't wearing protective gear came in contact with victim #2 while she started to show symptoms and who the heck are they?"

Did she go shopping? Who did she pass in the aisles in the grocery store?

Did she pass other hospital personnel in the halls or at work stations?

IOW, it's impossible to use quarantine to stop the spread.

The real key is to have a strong immune system. Omega-3 fish oil (Or krill oil), selenomethionine and fulvic acid might be the best three ways to protect oneself.

I watched your video there. You're right, she starts off kind of slow but I thought it was really, really good.

Interesting point about polio, how it's been renamed aseptic meningitis, EV D-68 and types of encephalitis. The fuckin' scam goes deeper every time I look.

Also she's saying malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever kill about 1.5 million per year. There is NO chance what we're seeing is Ebola. It's most likely dengue fever. And just by coincidence, Tokyo say an outbreak of 55 people getting dengue fever last week. Ha ha ha! So many coincidences!

Furthermore, Ebola countries happen to be resource-rich (crude oil and metals) and wouldn't it be convenient to find a reason to send US-salutin'-order-followin' soldiers there, which aslo just happens to have the effect of stiff-arming the Chinese?!

Ha ha ha!

Jesus I couldn't lie and con this much if I were paid to. I just couldn't do it! It must be great being a Statist.

I'm new commenting on this site. I'm impressed that there is data here that is not anywhere else on the internet. With that said, I note that nowhere on the internet has there been updated announcements on:

1) The confirmed ebola patient (MD flown in by quarantine from Sierra Leon) at Emory Hospital in Atlanta since Sept 9th.

2) The testing of tissue of the man who died in Saudi Arabia on October 8th (first flu symptoms/ brought to hospital Oct 6th)

3) The 46-year old health worker (recently back from Nigeria) tested no announcement of result, Heseki Hospital in Istanbul

Has anyone found more information on any of the above quarantines/ tests/ treated patient? Thank you.

1) The government is lying

2) There is no Ebola

3) If there is actually an infectious disease outbreak, it's most likely Dengue Fever judging by the syptoms

4) The government is lying
