Dallas Nurse Caught Ebola Because CDC Protocols Are Inadequate

George Washington's picture

Building Safer Protocols Isn’t Rocket Science … It’s Just Common Sense

A nurse in Dallas has caught Ebola even though she was wearing full protective gear.

The Centers for Disease Control says she must have broken protocol, or else she couldn’t have caught it.  Maybe she did … or maybe CDC assumptions are overly-optimistic.

But the whole point of protocols for dealing with life-and-death situations is to have backup systems, redundancy and a margin of error in case something goes wrong.

In other words, if a mistake could be fatal, you don’t just hope that there’s no human error or natural accident.  You build safety systems in so that – if something goes wrong – no one dies.

Safe Removal of Protective Suits

CDC head Frieden said today that removal of protective clothing is one of the easiest ways to get exposed to Ebola, if done incorrectly.

He also said that it is “not easy to do right.”

Yes …and the protocol should reflect those facts.

Specifically, the CDC protocol should require:

(1) Spraying of bleach or other disinfectant or uv light on the healhcare worker’s protective clothing before it is removed

(2) A buddy system, where an infectious disease specialist helps the healthcare worker take off their protective clothing without exposing themselves in the process

Respirators

Even the CDC now admits that Ebola can be spread if a carrier coughs or sneezes into the face of a healthcare worker.

And numerous scientists say that Ebola can be spread via aerosols created by vomit or the flushing of a toilet.

As such, CDC protocols must require frontline healthcare workers treating Ebola patients to wear respirators.

Phone Screening

Doctors should not have to guess whether patients have just come from Ebola hotzone countries like Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea.

Receptionists at doctor’s offices and hospitals around the country must ask the patient on the phone – before they come in – whether they’ve recently traveled there.

If the answer is yes, extra caution should be used to examine the patient … or they should be sent to specialist facilities which know how to spot and handle potential Ebola patients.

Postscript:  We think a travel ban from hotzone countries should be enacted. But if we're not going to do that, let's at least have a real screening test ...

30-Minute Test

A majority of Americans support banning all flights to the United States from countries experiencing an Ebola outbreak.

Screening people at West African airports with a thermometer can’t work, and is just for show.

But Japanese scientists have developed a test which can determine if someone has Ebola within 30 minutes. And the test is cheaper than the one currently being used in West Africa.

So – if we’re going to continue to allow folks from West Africa to fly into our country – why don’t we demand that they get tested for real?

A health agency like the World Health Organization, UN or Centers for Disease Control should buy the international airports in the hotzone countries one of the Japanese testing kits.

Then all travelers should be tested while they’re waiting for their flights.

Make sense?

http://news.yahoo.com/german-hospital-un-worker-dies-ebola-082155030.html  A man who died in Germany of ebola contracted in Africa (flown to Germany) "was kept in a secure isolation ward specially equipped with negative pressure rooms that are hermetically sealed and can only be accessed through a number of airlocks. All air and fluids are filtered and all equipment is decontaminated after use..." Lucky Germans to have such up-to-date facilities.

Tell us Mr. Director of CDC, how many US hospitals and other hospitals worldwide have "special isolation wards specially equipped with negative pressure rooms that are hermitcally sealed and can only be accessed through a number of airlocks, where all air and fluids are filtered and all equipment is decontaminated after use."  Are there such hospitals in every city in the US with international flights?

And speaking about decontamination, in the US what is happening to the air and fluids of ebola patients, alive or dead, decontaminated or not?

And regarding that equipment that is decontaminated, is it then reused? If not, what are the protocols for discard? And if reused, what are the protocols for insuring there are no remaining ebola virus, before the next persons using them might be exposed?

What are the protocols and where can we read them?

Thank you in advance for the information. I'll hold my breath...

Good article.  I agree.  If we are to restrict flights from Western Africa, we will need international cooperation, since a person could board a flight there and fly to any other place, then board a flight to US.

Cuba effectively dealth with aids by using quarantine measures ( some say draconian) but effective and  placing those infected in a sort of modern way leprosarium, while we in the US watched as the the public health measures were sacrificed at the altar of gay politics and privacy concerns, a very huge mistake in retrospect. The upshoot decimations of the gays, spread to  other population groups and now we live with HIV entrenched in human populations. Thank you Jonathan Mann and the supposed experts who fukked up. Maybe the CDC will wake up this tme and enforce public health laws (tracing and quarantine) and curb this outbreak before it becomes a pandemic. By the way those gays whom I knew who didn't die of AIDS or KS-AIDS in the mid 1980s were monogomous couples ie didn't fukk around at the bars bathhouses or with Typhoid Mark waiting to service some hard up John.

Jim Stone in an article agrees that the Ebola scare is a hoax. He claims the only people who caught Ebola in Africa got it from the vaccine and that this was why a red cross station was attacked a few weeks ago. He says the scare was created to get western troops into west africa to steal a recent Nigerian oil discovery and force striking diamond miners in Sierra leone back to work.

While it's possible that not ALL bureaucracies gradually, as they grow, become the greatest enemy of those they were established to serve, anathema to the problems they were supposed to solve, and a scourge on the human beans they were created to help, I think we can safely establish that Government bureaucrats eventually ALL become the disasters that other bureaucracies are created to clean up, in many cases with exactly the same incompetent, politiclly appointed douche bags, and the cycle begins all over again, ad infinitum.

Hence, the exponential growth in governments everywhere -----especially those which can print their own money. And along with that multiplication comes an inevitable state of chaos and then entropy, the natural state of things.

Why?

As any woman with a healthy libido will till you: SIZE MATTERS,  and paradoxically, the inverse of large size, the smaller the bureau, the more effective. Government bureaus exist for only one reason, to multiply themselves like cancer, feeding off their hosts and every once in a while, claiming a miniscule victory.

If you expect any more than the worst from a government bureaucracy, large corporation bureaucracy, or educational institution bureaucracy, disappointment is the only possible outcome.

The CDC and WHO are really screwing up BIG time on the class 4 biohazard requirement for weaponized Ebola IMHO. CANADA is reporting

that there might be one case of Ebola in Ontario. Bill and Malinda Gates

and the US ARMY Class 4 Bioterrorism Lab in Sierra Leone are going to be indicted eventually given the direct link to that particular lab and the funding partners. Methinks the world has gone completely fucking nuts.

Only in America do we get this level of crazy. If Americans could sell crazy

Is US healthcare to be controlled by medical science or political lies? Rational people know that quarantines control disease spread. There is no scientific proof of how ebola spreads, only political posturing. The acts of the CDC are criminally negligent and may or will cause the death of persons.

These acts are without due caution and circumspection in violation of 18 U.S. Code § 1112 - Manslaughter (a) Manslaughter is the unlawful killing of a human being without malice. It is of two kinds:
Voluntary—Upon a sudden quarrel or heat of passion.
Involuntary—In the commission of an unlawful act not amounting to a felony, or in the commission in an unlawful manner, or without due caution and circumspection, of a lawful act which might produce death.

I can't knowingly go into public with tuberculosis that is a crime but bringing a highly infectious disease here with a 50-90% mortality rate is A OK!

That in itself would make it a very attractive target for NSA monitoring. Maybe the "reader" who suggested it was actually employed by the NSA.

Note that Disqus itself might have nothing to do with the NSA. NSA would only need to monitor the traffic going into Disqus without their knowledge or permission. If you must employ a comment censoring system,, it should be one with cryptographic security.

It really bothers me how this whole thing is being handled. Please check out the following. It's from my prior replies to other posts and videos about Ebola and includes why health care workers are vulnerable. Please share it with as many as you can:

Simple answer IF the disease really is Ebola (who knows, there may be as many as 30 strains of it!): The wrong gear is being used. Read on if you really want to know. Health care workers, you need to be more vocal and decide not to come into work unless you are provided level 4 gear!

From prior replies to other posts including a youtube video titled

…Ebola Hoax: 100% REVEALED! CNN + NYT caught using CRISIS ACTORS! MUST SEE
by freeradiorevolution

I was wondering about this all being a massive hoax just because it makes more sense that the airlines themselves would probably decide to cease flights to and from those areas independently (why would they want to lose their crews?) Take note that January 28, 2015 we may see the FED announce the end of QE, rise in interest rates, market crash etc. so this could be just another distraction. I wonder too about all this talk about vaccines, are needles really necessary when for example polio vaccine can be easily distributed on sugar cubes and who knows, maybe other means without us being the wiser?
Also, Ebola is one of several hemorrhagic diseases and level 4 protective gear is completely different than what we are being shown via mainstream media (the real gear requires the user to don the gear completely naked, is pressurized and they are gloved up with multiple gloves too)
The following is from some prior postings & notes to shed further light on the subject:
checkout the book 'The Hot Zone' by Richard Preston if you really want to know the truth about Ebola and other similar diseases rated as level 4 by USAMRIID. Here are a few excerpts:
'The Ebola virus kills nine out of ten of its victims so quickly and gruesomely that even biohazard experts are terrified. It is airborne, it is extremely contagious, and in the winter of 1989, it seemed about to burn through the suburbs of Washington D.C.
At Fort Detrick’s USAMRIID, an Army research facility outside the nation’s capital, a SWAT team of soldiers and scientists wearing biohazard space suits was organized to stop the outbreak of the exotic “hot” virus. The grim operation went on in secret for eighteen days, under unprecedented, dangerous conditions.'

'The headache begins, typically, on the seventh day after exposure to the agent. On the seventh day after his New Year’s visit to Kitum cave-January 8, 1980-Monet felt a throbbing pain behind his eyeballs. He decided to stay home from work and went to bed in his bungalow. The headache grew worse. His eyeballs ached, and then his temples began to ache, the pain seeming to circle around inside his head. It would not go away with aspirin, and then he got a severe backache. His housekeeper, Johnnie, was still on her Christmas vacation, and he had recently hired a temporary housekeeper. She tried to take care of him, but she really didn’t know what to do. Then, on the third day after his headache started, he became nauseated, spiked a fever, and began to vomit. His vomiting grew intense and turned into dry heaves. At the same time, he became strangely passive. His face lost all appearance of life and set itself into an expressionless mask, with the eyeballs fixed, paralytic, and staring. The eyelids were slightly droopy, which gave him a peculiar appearance, as if his eyes were popping out of his head and half closed at the same time. The eyeballs themselves seemed almost frozen in their sockets, and they turned bright red. The skin of his face turned yellowish, with a brilliant starlike red speckles. He began to look like a zombie. His appearance frightened the temporary housekeeper. She didn’t understand the transformation in this man. His personality changed. He became sullen, resentful, angry, and his memory seemed to be blown away. He was not delirious. He could answer questions, although he didn’t seem to know exactly where he was.'

'When a hot virus multiplies in a host, it can saturate the body with virus particles, from the brain to the skin. The military experts then say that the virus has undergone “extreme amplification.” This is not something like the common cold. By the time an extreme amplification peaks out, an eyedropper of the victim’s blood may contain a hundred million particles. In other words, the host is possessed by a life form that is attempting to convert the host into itself. The transformation is not entirely successful, however, and the end result is a great deal of liquefying flesh mixed with virus, a kind of biological accident. Extreme amplification has occurred in Monet, and the sign of it is the black vomit.'

The press talks about a number of deaths and contamination still increasing. Broadcast images show us a caregiver wearing masks and full suits to approach potential patients, it feels like a bad sci-fi years 70.
However, by going to the WHO website that deals with the subject, one soon realizes that all these figures are actually in half, if we look at the case formally identified as caused by the Ebola virus. For the rest we will talk only if "suspect" or "probable".

Even considering that these claims are real, we are still far from genuine epidemics like that of diabetes that kills 4 million people worldwide each year . Cases of type 2 diabetes were diagnosed multiplied by 15 in 40 years, but health authorities do not move a finger.

Ebola, a deadly virus?

Recall that the Ebola virus has been around for many years, it was discovered 40 years ago by a Belgian doctor; Peter Piot. Since then, every year, this virus kills more or less than anyone, and nobody really cares. Recently a doctor interviewed by Le Monde, said the Ebola virus causes death in 20-90% of cases. Strange still have a window as wide mortality.

The answer is simple really, as the Ebola virus is especially dangerous when it is ungroomed. People die of dehydration or bleeding but treatment is then simply moisturize or transfusing the patient, which is not always easy in some African countries and the virus quickly spreads and the means are not available.
The pharmaceutical industry does not hear it that way and wants to convince governments of the epidemic threat in order to sell their snake oil to millions of copies as in the days of Tamiflu.

Spread fear and panic

The onset of psychosis around the Ebola obviously recalls the 2005 bird flu and swine flu (H1N1) 2009 Who has been the recall also a very lucrative business for vaccine manufacturers at the time.
, And resulted in the manipulation of public opinion to justify mass vaccination of the population, Roselyne Bachelot then Minister of Health (French) did not hesitate to order 94 million vaccine that remained mostly in closets or resold Balance to underdeveloped countries. For cons, the labs themselves, have actually been paid. Not to mention that even though only 6 million French have been vaccinated this led to terrible side effects of all kinds.
This psychosis is being havoc in Africa, where governments are no more or less shutting borders, mobilizing armies to suppress the people, and even isolated without reason tens of thousands of poor men, women , old people and children quarantined in slums without food or water.

Conclusion

The solution against the epidemic is to follow simple steps and common sense hygiene, good nutrition, vitamin D, vitamin C. There is no reason to suspect the Ebola virus can change abruptly in a pandemic in 'Africa-wide, or less global.
But there is no doubt that this psychosis may serve the financial interests of a few; then dear reader, pairing your information with scientific facts and you end up with substantial evidence of a conspiracy of businesses in order to create a genocide, follow the links below to learn more.

I like this line since it has that stupid American vibe that you constantly see whenever Americans say or type anything. Our country? So is it fine if infected people fly into other countries? Folks from West Africa? What about that guy in Dallas who was an American. Does he count since it was "his country" he was flying into? Soon Americans are going to hate on people form Africa because of Ebola just like they do Muslims.

"So – if we’re going to continue to allow folks from West Africa to fly into our country – why don’t we demand that they get tested for real?"

Telemedicine. Hospitals should use locals to gin up some alternative entrance schemes so all those with Ebola-similar symptoms do not go in through the ER. Instead, they are checked outside (perhaps at the end of a partially tarped/heated walkway), via webcam and mic. After being questioned and observed they'd be shuttled to line A or line B (possible Ebola).  A protected health care worker wipes down the computer screen etc., after each patient.
Promoting telemedicine checks via skype etc, with the patient staying at *home* (initially) --even better.

One thing I find interesting about the condition of the nurse is that she contracted the disease while attempting to not contact the patient.  Maybe there was some slight failure to allow infection.  However, why have the family member he was living with not shown symptoms?  What was different about the nurse's slight contact vs. family full exposure for days?
