When 'The American Dream' Meme Fails

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by James H Kunstler via Kunstler.com,

The authorities keep emphasizing that the nurse who caught ebola from Thomas Eric Duncan was sealed in her haz-mat suit the whole time she cared for the poor fellow and blah blah nobody knows how she could possibly catch the darn thing…. But the newspapers and cable news networks are not asking: What about all the people, ordinary civilians, that this nurse was consorting with off-work, after she took off her haz-mat suit and, let’s say, at some point stopped by the Kroger Store’s fabulous steam table display of take-out goodies behind the helpful and reassuring sneeze-guard on her way back home? It sounds like a new Netflix drama – The Fatal Mac and Cheese.

If one more person in that chain of circumstance falls ill, Rick Perry will have to ring-fence Dallas faster than you can say Guadalupe Hidalgo and then we’ll be off to the quarantine races in America. It will be interesting to see who’s shorting the airline stocks a few hours from now. I’ve got to pass through Dulles airport tomorrow myself, and then two more foreign hubs after that, and return to freakin’ Newark International at the end of the week when a fullblown ebola panic may be underway.

For the moment, I’m in Washington for a conference on population and immigration. Believe it or not there are some people who want to have an honest national conversation about these issues amid all the disingenuous chatter about “dreamers” emanating from the Oval Office in this miserable era of politics-as-spin-art. And along comes the galvanizing event of a really serious disease to finally force the issue. Nothing concentrates a nation’s attention like the specter of the people next door bleeding out through their ears and noses.

Welcome to the diminishing returns of the global economy. They’ve been there all along, but none previously were sufficiently vivid or horrifying as ebola. The Chinese FoxConn workers throwing themselves out the factory windows in despair just seemed like some kind of fraternity prank in comparison. Now something has got loose from the Heart of Darkness like the hissing beastie that burst out of John Hurt’s ribcage in Alien and water-skied out of the sick bay into the bowels of the cargo ship Nostromo. Sometimes a metaphor is just a figure of speech and sometimes it’s liable to set your hair on fire.

The ebola melodrama has all the mojo to set the global economy’s hair on fire. And it comes along at a very strange time: just as central bank hoodoo approaches the brink of its own epic fail – as in, accounting fraud, check-kiting, and public relations can only work as a place-holder for authentic economic relations for so long before the ominous shadow of reality sweeps in on black swan wings. The markets were already well into the puking stage of their own hemorrhagic contagion last week. Maybe the S & P starts bleeding from its eyes and ears this week.

There’s certainly blood all over the overburdened back roads of the Bakken play all of a sudden, where $88-a-barrel shale oil doesn’t even allow you to pretend that you’ve got a profitable venture going. The shale oil fairy tale has been at the center of a matrix of lies America has been telling itself about its economic meth buzz. Saudi America and all that malarkey, all in the service of America’s master wish of all wishes: please Lord, let us keep driving to Wal Mart forever.

Speaking of dreams and dreamers, that was a pretty shabby one. But here we are now up against one of the master facts of the day: our world faces epic, desperate demographic shifts as regions of it are proving to be very unfriendly to human habitation. How long do we pretend that all the refugees are welcome to come here, bleeding from their eyes and noses, as their dreams of laying sod for $6-an-hour or slaughtering chickens for the greater glory of Colonel Sanders collide with the diminishing returns of yet another Elon Musk sales pitch for the blessed denizens of Palo Alto aspiring to Godhood. I, for one, doubt that there’s enough room for all of us in that much dreamed-of for-profit spacecraft soon to carry us to worlds where the black swan’s wings have never cast a shadow.

I would have thought you might better recognize the choices you are making, and the consequences they may bring.

Has anyone else thought, just for a moment, that they might have caught a whiff of a black swan, and it smelled something like bio-warfare?

Here are six moral spheres. How would you manipulate them so as to use them against an "outsider" group? How would you use them to demonize that group?

It's been done throughout history.

Care/harm for others, protecting them from harm.

Fairness/cheating, Justice, treating others in proportion to their actions (He has also referred to this dimension as Proportionality.)

Liberty/oppression, characterizes judgments in terms of whether subjects are tyrannized.

Loyalty/betrayal to your group, family, nation. (He has also referred to this dimension as Ingroup.)

Authority/subversion for tradition and legitimate authority. (He has also connected this foundation to a notion of Respect.)

Sanctity/degradation, avoiding disgusting things, foods, actions. (He has also referred to this as Purity.)

Sounds like you actually prefer to remember Nuremburg rather than Weimar. Dolchstoss, fememorde and all that, just updated a century?

Weimar had Article 48.

Madison had Amendment 2.

That's why we still have a chance and Weimar Germany was philosophically doomed from its very inception.

May God continue to shield and bless the great Republic in its hour of need.

I wonder how long the $40 hard-deck will hold for UAL.  Ebola is going to crush any negotiating power the company might have hoped to have with the flight attendants flying-petri-dishes-in-a-skirt.  Management will probably cave, soon, as absolutely nobody will want to be picking up slobbery napkins, sweaty pillows, and kleenex in an airtight aluminum tube for the foreseeable future.  At least the pilots have the body-fluid-proof cockpit door.

Summing up Kunstler's rants: says the guy who travels hither and yonder to well paid speaking engagements via jet airplanes, buses and cars. This guy has by far a larger carbon footprint than any normal person, all the while espousing to be Mr. Green himself. What a maroon. He is a metaphor for all that is wrong with this nation. Telling us what we should be doing, how we should be living and belittling us for our culture (NASCAR/redneck rants) while he does the opposite of what he says he believes in. Oh, and his writing is not all that good. I find grammatical errors in almost every column he writes. Jim: try Cisco telepresence instead the next time you need to travel. What about all the people, ordinary civilians, that this nurse was consorting with off-work

Ebola Nurse Boyfriend Reportedly Admitted With Ebola Symptoms

An email sent out to the Alcon staff by its CEO reportedly said that the ebola nurse’s boyfriend was admitted into hospital with “Ebola-like symptoms.”

Gotnews.com has received word from two different Alcon employees, both of whom asked not to be identified.

Alcon’s U.S. headquarters are in Fort Worth, Texas. It is an opthomological pharmaceutical company.

Requests for comment from Alcon were not returned.

No one else has confirmed yet. About 20 mentions on Twitter. Nina's boyfriend works at Alcon in Fort Worth.  So do they shut down Alcon?

Can't shut down Alcon.  There're black and Latino folks working there. Dat'd be racist, politically incorrect, panicking or some such undesirable, politically correct shit.

Y'all want a real chiller?  Spoke with a couple acquaintances form my county's medical operation this weekend.  Only half-jokingly (kinda challenging, but politely) asked if they're prepared, a major plan, for the impending Ebola Epidemic.
They said there's not gonna be an epidemic, Ebola is not  that transmissible and they've got protocols in place.

Uh huh.....

We're really believing our on shit don't stink right now, aren't we?

Like nothing can ever impact our quality of life because everything bad is "contained" by mystical people who appear out of nowhere to fix shit for us.  The Fed for financial matters, the CDC for matters of epidemiology.  "Somebody else" will always take care of it.

This attitude brought to you by everyone who thinks that more government is the answer to everything.

Yes, there is something, somewhere that people avoid like the plague ....
LOL
... that historically has been it can't happen here.  (Forget the Dancing with the Quadriplegics entertainment half of the bread and circuses for a moment.)

Most all the county health folks seem to be toeing the line of menial transmissiblity (touch, etc) that the county's Chief Epidemiologist (or whatever his title is ) which funnily enough, happens to parallel the CDC's.
(DUH)
Further... one of the guys even said that "Only the people at FOX news believe that" when speaking to the airborne possibility of contamination, etc.

They're totally unprepared for anything big.  At the local (my local is not very big, BTW... in fact tiny by any sytandards), county medical team (probably  isleading the county medical officer and his bosses) and at state a la my earlier comment about the CDC finally starting to think of maybe having One Designated hospital per state to care for Ebola.

"Don't worry, we got this."
My ass

Then post disaster, NWO rules.... more funding and more centralized power.  And more laws.  And taxes.

Good luck with that.

While I'm a cynical as anyone I know, I still recognize my actions (and inactions) MUST be largely driven by my inputs, those things I have been drip and force fed for sixty years of media and education immersion, and honestly feel I have no idea if my actions are actually my own or those preprogrammed into me. Zero Hedge feeds one side of me, but even then, this is coming into my head by wire. At some point in our past we were the product of our personal and real exposures, nature, for lack of better description. Today, almost everything (including the weather?) is artificial, designed for our consumption.

Is ebola manufactured for "benefit"? Who knows. Its almost irrelevant as we know it will be used. It is their nature to lever, to use to their advantage EVERY opportunity, which I believe is not our own. But is my cynicism a preprogrammed response?

Unity is strength for good or bad. This is our underlying theme. Destruction of unity, divisive policies and rhetoric designed to that end. In Nazi Germany, Hitler used division to collect power of his Aryan supermen. Who fits that role in America today? I don't see any one group holding power. Only government...its employees, its military, its dependents.

Any government official who says that Ebola is not a concern and that they "have medical protocols in place" to prevent its spread should be given as much credence as that guy at the end of Raider of the lost Ark who says, "we have top men working on it as we speak". Which is to say they are full of shit lying scum bags working for the agenda. I've said this since the beginning and I'll say it again: when you see Ebola in the 2nd city it's time to pack your shit. When it hits the 3rd city then it's time to bug out to your remote location if you have one. 2nd city means they are losing the fight. 3rd city means they lost the fight and it's out and unstoppable.

Bubonic plague is an infection of the lymphatic system, usually resulting from the bite of an infected flea, Xenopsylla cheopis (the rat flea). In very rare circumstances, as in the septicemic plague, the disease can be transmitted by direct contact with infected tissue or exposure to the cough of another human.

The 25 skeletons unearthed in the Clerkenwell area of London a year ago may hold the key to the truth about the nature of the Black Death that ravaged Britain and Europe in the mid-14th century.

A Channel 4 documentary on Sunday will claim that analysis of the bodies and of wills registered in London at the time has cast doubt on "facts" that every schoolchild has learned for decades: that the epidemic was caused by a highly contagious strain spread by the fleas on rats.

Evidence taken from the human remains found in Charterhouse Square, to the north of the City of London, during excavations carried out as part of the construction of the Crossrail train line, may support a theory held by some scientists that only an airborne infection could have spread so fast and killed so quickly.

i didn't red-arrow you, Zerohead...i only wanted to say that those assumptions are just that.  we have no proof that the flea/bacteria/bubonic thing was the black death...we only assume as much because the symptoms are somewhat analogous to that described in the victims.  hemmoragic fever is similarly very similar.

but as to your main point, i agree: rats and fleas couldn't do this...especially not in a nordic climate where fleas all die in november.

the spread of the black death was clearly viral.

here's my link from the mayan calender thing...i posted it then out of respect.  but, skilled as they were, they were off a lil bit:

I did contribute to your "GREEN" revolution.

I do not agree with your correlation of the Mayan calender with an outbreak of "THE WORM".

They say patient "ZERO" was a young African boy, maybe in your USSA Obummers dream it "COULD" be him. "THEY" say the yout ate some "BUSH"meat and ingested "THE WORM". He must have a taste for raw "BUSH"meat, the savages often do.

The lies continue from the "GREAT" Satan.

There is a good documentary on youtube.  It appears it came from Asia probably from trading ships into Venice or possibly Genoa.  I had to turn it off.  It was so depressing. Heartbreaking because they never had a chance.

God help those poor souls back then.  I have little sympathy from us today.  We know better.  The people back then did not know what they were facing.

People voted for this twice and vote for it by watching any TV because that is how they control the masses.

Ring fencing Dallas ain't going to do a damn thing you have to ring fence Goldman Sachs. If you want to stop ebola or war or the militarization use of drones and such NSA etc you have to stop Goldman Sachs.Stop the funding of the war by the globalists against the people of the world and the terrorism stops. Then prosperity can return. You know those pricks are hated by the entire planet because their financial terrorism is killing people and economies.

Zebrasquid - I agree. It is a chaotic universe in any event and a couple months of supplies may mean life or death.

Benjamin Franklin lived in tumultuous times and as he stated: "It is better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it."

I don't know too many people that store a months worth of food if shelter in place orders are issued. Look at Katrina and New Orleans as an example. Aid may take a couple of weeks and consist of wheat pasta rations. On meds? Forget about it. All those people on anti-depressents and anxiety meds and very hungry to boot. Potential situations like this are what arms are for nowadays, it was never a reality to plug a drone or sattelite with a shotgun or pistol.

When you say "cover up", I'm sure you mean "used as an excuse for".

Best protective gear in an office enviroment?  Use a hole punch to create holes in a coffee filter and then a rubber band to attach it to your face.  Then, using the same hole punch as a bludgeoning device, fight your way out.  With any luck, you'll make it to the bar on the corner.  If you need to use the bathroom there, check for blood on the seat.  Good luck.

"We can have secret programs. You know, the American people don't have to know the name of every individual that's under investigation. We don't need to know the technical details of absolutely every program in the intelligence community."

That's it, he's shown his hand.

He doesn't question whether covert organizations like the CIA are compatible with democratic government. This guy is no Philip Agee or John Stockwell. He's still keeping some of his tribal loyalties.

About 10 -11 years ago a little known liberal economist (Bao at Uof Cal) forwarded a population expansion report to a top GM manager I was working with. I was given the report and told by the manager he wanted me to design new future population DB2 tables for the sales data warehouse.

What caught my eye at the end in the stack of papers was an extra report that did not belong with my project. It was a report being circulated to a multitude of college and university liberal think tanks. It stated in summary that the current middle “red” states in America were way under populated per square mile (compared to Asia, Europe and blue states on the coasts) and should be repopulated with less fortunate Africans, Asians or South Americans who would be sympatric to liberal causes. Fast forward and that is what Obama is doing today…
