WHO Warns Up To 10,000 Ebola Cases Per Week By December

Tyler Durden's picture

With more than 4,400 people dead from Ebola - mainly in West Africa - senior WHO official Bruce Aylward told reporters on Monday that the outbreak was continuing to spread geographically to new districts in the capitals of Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea. As The BBC reports, the WHO says it is alarmed by the number of health workers exposed to the disease and warned the epidemic threatens the "very survival" of societies and could lead to failed states. "Any sense that the great effort that's been kicked off over the last couple of months is already starting to see an impact, that would be really, really premature," Aylward said, as WHO further warned the number of new Ebola cases may jump to 10,000 a week by Dec. 1 as the deadly viral infection spreads - "the virus is still moving geographically and still escalating in capitals, and that’s what concerns me."

First - the good news:

  • *WHO TO DECLARE END OF EBOLA IN SENEGAL OCT. 17 IF NO NEW CASES

But - as The FT reports,

The Ebola epidemic in west Africa is set to reach a peak of between 5,000 and 10,000 cases a week by early December – up to 10 times the current official figure – before international action is likely to reverse the rise, the World Health Organisation has predicted.

Dr Bruce Aylward, who recently took charge of the WHO’s operational response to the crisis, also warned on Tuesday not to misinterpret the official Ebola lethality numbers. The latest figures show 8,914 cases and 4,447 deaths so far, suggesting that about half the patients recover, but may only show half the real toll.

...

“We anticipate that the number of cases [per week] occurring by that time will be 5,000 to 10,000,” he said. “It could be higher, it could lower, but it’s going to be in that ballpark.”

*  *  *

Outside of West Africa, cases continue to rise:

Sadly, European cases continue to deteriorate...

A UN medical worker infected with Ebola has died at a hospital in Germany. Doctors at the hospital in Leipzig said the man, 56, originally from Sudan, died despite receiving experimental drugs to treat the virus. (via BBC):

The man who died in Leipzig had been working as a UN medical official in Liberia - one of the worst affected countries - when he caught Ebola.

He arrived in Germany last Thursday for treatment and was put into a hermetically sealed ward, accessed through airlock systems.

"Despite intensive medical measures and maximum efforts by the medical team, the 56-year-old UN employee succumbed to the serious infectious disease," a statement from St Georg hospital said.

He was the second member of the UN team in Liberia to die from the virus, the BBC's Jenny Hill in Berlin says.

He was also the third Ebola patient to be treated for the virus in Germany after contracting the disease in West Africa.

The Spanish nurse remains in critical condition after becoming the first person to contract the disease outside of Africa last week, although doctors say there are signs of improvement

In the US, potential cases continue to appear...

In Jacksonville, Florida a patient with flu-like symptoms was isolated and tested for Ebola “on the basis of self-reported casual contact with a West Africa traveler,” according to the hospital.

In Boston, Massachusetts on Monday, a patient who had recently traveled to Liberia was evaluated for Ebola and deemed not to have the virus.

And finally, the most worrying case for Americans remains in Kansas...

Kansas University Hospital officials have placed a man into isolation while awaiting the results of Ebola tests, officials said Monday. The patient—a medic who had recently worked in West Africa treating locals for the virus—admitted himself to the hospital with flu-like symptoms. Despite his exposure, officials described his case as “a low risk patient.”

Since once Ebola hits the heartland, one might expect domestic air travel to slow dramatically.

We leave it to UN Ebola mission leader Tony Banbury to sum up what's needed:

"We need everything. We need it everywhere, and we need it superfast."

that's the best they can do???  How are they going to cull the population down to 500 million people to save the planet for themselves if they can't come up with a better killer disease than ebola???  Geez, the damn flu does a better job than ebola.  I just can't take the Georgia Guidestones seriously if they can't do better than this.  Why did they even bother patenting ebola?  It's the biggest pump and dump failure since CYNC!

We do not have accurate numbers on the deaths. Just like we do not have accurate numbers on how many have been exposed. If more racist white people were willing to go to the hardest hit areas and do more than just hate we would know more.

Clearly the fault lies with racists from the developed world.

If you were on the moon and couldnt catch Ebola, objectively looking at only the verifiable FACTS presented thus far you would likely determine that Ebola is a well orchestrated distraction. Once your inner lizard brain cries out "It could happen to me and my family and theres nothing I can do about it!" - the fear makes you irrational and you are a perfect target for the PROPAGANDA and telescreen PROGRAMMING.

Why do otherwise intelligent and indepoendant thinkers on ZH believe that Sandy Hook / Newtown, Boston Bombing, Aurora theater, 9/11 & WTC's are all false flags and/or hoaxes but the Ebolas are real? Really?

The import of the Ebola virus into Russia is possible but there are no conditions for the spread of the disease in the country, Russian Minister of Health Veronika Skvortsova said Monday.

There are no self-sufficient conditions for the Ebola outbreak…, but as for imported cases, they are possible just like in any other country,” the minister said.

“Very serious measures have been taken to minimize the risk of an [Ebola cases] import,” the health official added.

I'm thinking if you're a Liberian with a budding case of Ebola, Russia and China won't be high on the list of countries offering you free medical care and a generous welfare package in return for your vote (legal or otherwise).   That just leaves the work thing and a hospital bill.....maybe a .25c bullet if they're not feeling the love that day.

Their explanation is rather insane.

First, their belief is that since past cases of hemorrhagic fever in the US have been contained, they would be contained in this case. This has already shown to be false by the Dallas case.

Second, in a weird parallel to bomb the world diplomacy, commercial flights must be open so that we can fight terro... er, I mean ebola over there so it doesn't spread here. This seems false in that we have not shown any ability to contain it over there and have already brought it to this country via commercial traffic and we have a huge Air Force which could move the very small numbers of public health workers we are sending over.

In summary, commercial flights out of countries that are experiencing the worst hemorrhagic fever outbreak in recorded history are continuing because the people in charge are retarded.

Yes, Some posters attack ZH for covering Ebola as an economic story. Well, it is an economic story that has just begun. Some here attacked ZH for it's coverage of Ukraine Civil War, but now we see just how important that war is for Europes economy, like Germany sinking into recession on the back of American induced sanctions.

So ZH, keep up the good work, and ignore people who can't see that all events are to some extent economic. War and disease have proven through history to be economic game changers.

Ebola is a story yet to be written, lets see where Air Line stocks stand after the next African Ebola person flies into Europe or America. It WILL happen, maybe already has. Any African with money and lives in Ebola country will seek to fly out to escape if well, to get free unlimited world calss treatment if they fear having been in contact with Ebola. Look at the Nigerian guy, fuck, he took an Ebola person to the hospital, then back home, you tink he got on that plane NOT knowing his ebola contact? Sure he fuckign did, and he ended up in a US hospital, not an African hell hole tent. Lesson learned you millions of African?????

http://permaculturenews.org/2014/09/25/tokyo-contaminated-fit-habitation...

The bit about spreading radioactive waste around Japan and incinerating it is on a par with allowing flights out of West Africa:

Finally, Mita says that the radioactive contamination of Tokyo is increasing because of the Japanese government’s policy of transporting radioactive waste from the Fukushima zone all over Japan for incineration or burial. The Japanese government and the nuclear authorities claimed that filters on the stacks of the incineration plants would remove most of the radioactivity, but this is not the case, and in the opinion of many, it is adding to the contamination. Arnie Gundersen, for instance says, “They are creating 100 to 1000 times more radioactive material by burning debris than keeping it in concentrated form”

Mindfucking incompetence.

Speaking of currency, I would not doubt for one second that the paper money and coins circulating around the various towns and cities contaminated with Ebola is playing it's own stealthy mode of helping spread the virus from person to person. Lots of nervous, sweaty hands, still have to buy food and goods...and as we all know, Ebola is present in sweat and can survive on surfaces for dozens of hours outside the body. No one is mentioning this.

Washington DC is run by a certain Neo-Conservative cabal that holds power over most actions of government, the second great power driving Washington DC is the corporations of the world, what interests have they in Ebola. Excellent point "chunga"! I think that central government and it's massive armed forces, police and agents would surely enforce a "crisis law" onto the books that forces your wife to work. In fact, now that you have mentioned it, I think it is a 100% bet that they would FORCE her into the Ebola wards. Damn, try and be a care taker, and soon they can make you a forced care taker. as ive said on another thread, i have a few friends whose wives work in health care, most of them nurses. they are mostly capable of scrapping by on one income, and plan to do so if we start seeing more cases pop up in the US. Several of them have young kids and won't risk getting sick and spreading it to their kids, and will be sitting this out at home until it burns itself out. Im sure they arent the only ones, and once a few people start walking out, it will cause a snowball effect. In such a case, not only would ebola patients not recieve adequate care, but everyone else needing any kind of care would be out of luck as well. Imagine heart attack victims or car accident victims waiting hours on end for any kind of help, and ambulances taking hours to get there

Agree completely Carl! That is where government Patriot Act laws will come into force making nurses unwilling government agents thus forced by law to go to work. Washington would never let these women and men sit it out at home. FORCE is the main hand that government now uses against it's people. Were are occupied by Washington DC as if we are an enemy nation conquered by elites in Washington. I

Whether it's 100 by Christmas, or January '15, or whenever, I agree that by 100 cases there will be massive disruptions among medical staff, all adding to a continued slowdown of the world, and a descent into even more centralized, governmental idiocy, with all sorts of unpredictable consequences.

Between the European rescession, airline stocks crashing, the reality that  this economy is still going no where, a global shift is starting to set in. I think the top is in, take your gains, get defensive, think about taking care of your loved ones.

If the plot of infections matches a projected curve at more than 98-99% with 8 months of data, you've got some pretty compelling evidence.  Of course it could change moving forward and probably will - that's why we continue keep track:  We're looking for how the trend is evolving.  Could get better, could get worse, might stay the same.  Either way, I'm going to hope for the best and plan for the worst.

The laws of exponential growth, or exponents in general, were probably not part of his education in American Public Schools. We avoid teaching basics in order to make Americans more manageable by government. If they can't think using math and physics laws as a grounding, then they can be manipulated like animals. Thus American Public School threw basics of math, physics and history out the fucking window. To replace with ebonics, history of native Americans, and lesbian culture.

Um... it's right on schedule when you think of it....

it doubles every 3 weeks.... so 13 generations of the virus only produces 8192 infected persons..... that takes 273 days to reach.

Now, by the time we reach the 20th generation, you have 1,048,576 infected.... when you reach the 30th generation you have over a billion infected....

Of course the math breaks down when there aren't enough people to infect or you actually have contact tracing and resources and people to do it.

Pretty scary though... 5 generations = 105 days... so, we're 40 days away from seeing 32768 infected and only 105 days later, you're over a million.

I consider a massive leap in the number of people catching Ebola as a valid possibility.  Everyday new cases has been popping up throughout the world, this virus in far from contained. This virus has worked overtime to pick up "critical mass." I'm referring to the point where enough people are infected with the virus that it can sustain a chain reaction and expand out of control.

The bad news is Ebola may have already reached critical mass and may now be impossible to contain. The economic and humanitarian implications of this are massive and it could change everything. More on why we should be very concerned in the article below.
